Chapter 5: The Woman Who Finally Spoke

At noon, Daniel received a call from an unfamiliar number.

“Mr. Whitmore?””

“Yes. Who is this?””

“My name is Tanya Brooks. I work at the front desk.””

Daniel recognized her voice immediately.

“Is something wrong?””

“I'm sorry to bother you, sir. But I think you need to know what Ms. Cole is doing.””

Daniel stood from his chair.

“Tell me.””

“I heard her speaking to Mr. Cole on the phone this morning.””

“Victor?””

“Yes, sir.””

“What did they say?””

Tanya took a nervous breath.

“She said you had the paperwork. He asked her whether she had the original signature.””

Daniel glanced at Helen.

She immediately began taking notes.

“Did you hear anything else?””

“Yes. She said she wasn't going to let him abandon her.””

Daniel's expression tightened.

“Where is she now?””

“In the private event office.””

“Don't confront her. Don't let her know you spoke to me.””

“I won't.””

“Tanya, you've already done something important by telling the truth.””

There was a pause.

Then Tanya said something that made Daniel stop.

“Mr. Whitmore, there's another person who can help you.””

“Who?””

“Mrs. Evelyn Price.””

Daniel recognized the name.

Evelyn had been the hotel's former director of guest relations.

She had worked for his father for twenty-three years before suddenly resigning eight months earlier.

“Where is she?””

“She works at the downtown conference center now. But she left something in the old staff archive.””

“What?””

“A folder.””

“What folder?””

Tanya lowered her voice.

“The one she told me to give to you if anything ever happened to the Whitmore family.””

Daniel stared at the phone.

“Why didn't she give it to me herself?””

“Because she said she couldn't trust anyone in management.””

Forty minutes later, Daniel was standing outside a small café three blocks from the hotel.

A woman in her late fifties sat near the window.

Her silver hair was tied into a low bun, and a pair of reading glasses rested on top of a newspaper.

When Daniel entered, she stood immediately.

“Mr. Whitmore.””

“Evelyn.””

They shook hands.

“I wish we were meeting under better circumstances,” she said.

“So do I.””

She gestured toward the chair opposite her.

Daniel sat.

“What did you find?””

Evelyn opened her handbag and removed a thick manila envelope.

“I found evidence that Vanessa Cole and Victor have been trying to manipulate the hotel for almost a year.””

Daniel opened the envelope.

Inside were printed emails, internal memos, photographs, and handwritten notes.

He began reading.

The first document was dated eleven months earlier.

It described a meeting between Victor Cole and Robert Gaines.

The subject line read:

*PROJECT MERIDIAN — CONTROL TRANSFER STRATEGY.*

Daniel looked up.

“Why didn't you report this?””

“I did.””

“To whom?””

“Your father.””

Daniel froze.

“My father?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Shortly before he died, he asked me to investigate unusual vendor payments and changes to the hotel's ownership records.””

Daniel looked at the document again.

His father had died eighteen months earlier.

A sudden wave of memories returned.

His father's final weeks in the hospital.

The unfinished conversations.

The business files Daniel had promised to review after the funeral.

“Did he know Victor was involved?””

“Yes.””

“Did he know about Vanessa?””

Evelyn nodded.

“He told me she was the person Victor intended to use inside the hotel.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Why?””

“Because she knew the staff, the vendors, the security procedures, and the executive routines.””

Evelyn slid another paper across the table.

It was a handwritten note.

The handwriting belonged to Daniel's father.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

His father had written in blue ink, with a slight upward slant.

The note read:

Never allow the family trust to become a weapon against the people it was created to protect.

Daniel read it twice.

“What does this mean?””

Evelyn folded her hands.

“Your father discovered that Victor had been approaching minority shareholders, trying to purchase their voting rights.””

“That's legal if the transactions are properly authorized.””

“Yes. But Victor wasn't simply purchasing shares.””

She pointed to another document.

“He was trying to obtain control of the trust's voting authority through a false beneficiary consent.””

Daniel's expression darkened.

“Emily.””

“Yes.””

“Why her?””

“Because she's the only direct family beneficiary besides you.””

Daniel looked at the document.

A proposed amendment listed Emily as having voluntarily surrendered certain approval rights.

The signature looked almost identical to hers.

Almost.

“Who prepared this?””

“Victor's legal consultant.””

“Did my father stop it?””

Evelyn nodded.

“He refused to sign the amendment. He also instructed me to preserve every document.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Then why didn't I know?””

Evelyn's eyes became wet.

“Because your father believed someone inside the hotel was leaking information.””

Daniel went still.

“Who?””

“I never found out.””

“Did he tell you anything else?””

Evelyn hesitated.

Then she reached into the envelope again.

This time, she removed a photograph.

It showed Victor Cole standing beside Robert Gaines outside a private office.

A third person stood with them.

A woman in a dark blazer.

Daniel leaned closer.

He recognized her.

Helen Brooks.

His executive assistant.

The photograph was dated nine months earlier.

Daniel stared at it.

“Why is Helen in this picture?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“I don't know.””

“Did my father know?””

“I believe he did.””

Daniel placed the photograph on the table.

He suddenly remembered something.

His father had once warned him not to trust people simply because they had worked for the family for years.

Daniel had dismissed it as an old man's paranoia.

Now he wasn't so sure.

“Evelyn, did you ever confront Helen?””

“No. I didn't have enough evidence.””

Daniel closed the envelope.

“Thank you.””

Evelyn reached across the table.

“Mr. Whitmore, there's one more thing.””

He looked at her.

“Your father didn't just investigate the transfer. He prepared a contingency.””

“What contingency?””

“He created a sealed instruction with the family trust's independent legal custodian.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why didn't he tell me?””

“He said the instruction should only be opened if someone attempted to use Emily's beneficiary status to force an unauthorized transfer.””

Daniel felt his pulse quicken.

“Where is it?””

Evelyn handed him a small card.

A law firm's name was printed on the front.

*HARRISON, BELL & PARTNERS.*

Daniel recognized the firm.

It had represented his family for decades.

He stood.

“I need to make a call.””

Back at the hotel, Helen was waiting outside Daniel's office.

She had a tablet in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other.

“Sir, the security team found something.””

Daniel stopped.

“What?””

“An external storage device was connected to the event office computer at 9:42 this morning.””

“By whom?””

“The login belongs to Vanessa Cole.””

Daniel looked at the tablet.

“Can we identify what was copied?””

“Yes. Several ownership files and guest authorization records.””

“Where were they sent?””

Helen hesitated.

“An encrypted email account.””

“Can we trace the recipient?””

“Our IT team is trying.””

Daniel walked into his office.

“Where's Robert?””

“Still in the administrative office.””

“And Marcus?””

“His interview is scheduled for this afternoon.””

Daniel placed Evelyn's envelope on the desk.

“Get me the trust custodian.””

Helen nodded.

Then she glanced at the envelope.

“What's that?””

“Evidence.””

Helen looked at the photograph sticking out from the folder.

Her face changed for just a second.

Daniel noticed.

“Do you recognize the people in this picture?””

Helen quickly looked away.

“No, sir.””

Daniel said nothing.

He simply closed the folder.

“Please arrange the call.””

Helen left.

A few seconds later, Daniel's phone vibrated.

A message appeared from Emily.

*Dad, someone just came to my room asking me to sign a document.*

Daniel immediately called her.

She answered on the first ring.

“Dad?””

“Are you safe?””

“Yes. The nurse is here.””

“Who came?””

“A man in a dark suit. He said he was from the hotel's legal department.””

“Did you sign anything?””

“No.””

“What did he want?””

“He said there was a mistake in my guest registration and he needed me to sign a correction.””

Daniel gripped the phone.

“What did you tell him?””

“I asked him to show me the original document.””

“And?””

“He got nervous. Then he said he would come back later.””

Daniel's voice became firm.

“Do not let him back into your room. I'll send security immediately.””

Emily paused.

“Dad?””

“Yes?””

“He knew Lily's name.””

Daniel felt a chill move through him.

“What?””

“He said the form needed to include both of us.””

Daniel looked toward the door.

“Stay with the nurse. I'm coming.””

He ended the call and immediately contacted security.

Then he opened the hotel surveillance system.

The hallway outside Emily's suite appeared on the screen.

A man in a dark suit was walking toward the elevators.

Daniel enlarged the image.

The man's face became visible.

He recognized him.

It was Victor Cole's attorney.

But there was something else.

The man was carrying a document folder.

And as he entered the elevator, he removed one sheet of paper and placed it inside his jacket.

Daniel called Helen.

“Where is the legal consultant?””

“Which one?””

“Victor Cole's attorney. The man who just visited Emily.””

Helen went quiet.

“Sir, nobody from the legal department was authorized to visit her.””

Daniel stared at the screen.

“Then we have a serious problem.””

That afternoon, Emily sat in the private suite with Lily asleep beside her.

A security officer stood outside the door.

She had tried to relax, but her mind kept returning to the strange visitor.

She remembered the man's voice.

The way he smiled.

The way he had said her daughter's name.

She picked up her phone and opened the photograph gallery.

One image caught her attention.

It was a picture she had taken during her visit to Daniel's office a month earlier.

She had been sitting in the reception area, waiting for her father.

In the background, Vanessa was speaking with a man.

Emily zoomed in.

The man wore the same dark suit.

She enlarged the photograph again.

His face was unmistakable.

But then she noticed the folder under his arm.

There was a logo on it.

A small silver crown.

The same logo she had seen on the documents her father had shown her.

Sterling Crown Holdings.

Emily's stomach tightened.

She immediately forwarded the photograph to Daniel.

Then she typed:

*Dad, I think the man who came to my room was there the day Vanessa tried to get me to sign those papers.*

A moment later, Daniel replied.

*Stay where you are. I'm handling this.*

Emily placed the phone down.

Lily stirred.

She gently picked her daughter up and held her against her chest.

“It's okay, baby,” she whispered.

But she knew something was terribly wrong.

Because the man who had come to her room hadn't been trying to correct a hotel registration.

He had been trying to obtain something.

And whatever it was, he had been willing to approach a woman recovering from childbirth to get it.

At 5:30 p.m., Daniel received a call from Harrison, Bell & Partners.

The attorney on the other end sounded serious.

“Mr. Whitmore, we've located your father's sealed instruction.””

“Can it be opened?””

“Yes. But there's a complication.””

“What complication?””

“The instruction names a person who must be present when the seal is broken.””

Daniel glanced at the family photograph on his desk.

“Who?””

“Your daughter, Emily.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Why?””

“Because your father anticipated that someone might attempt to use her identity or beneficiary status to seize control of the family trust.””

Daniel looked at the clock.

The charity gala was only hours away.

“Can we arrange it tonight?””

“Yes. But I need to warn you. Once the document is opened, its contents may trigger an immediate legal restriction on any pending transfer.””

“Good.””

There was a pause.

Then the attorney added:

“And Mr. Whitmore?””

“Yes?””

“Your father left a second sealed document.””

“What is it?””

“A list of individuals he believed were involved in the attempted takeover.””

Daniel went completely still.

“Do you have the names?””

“Yes.””

“Read them to me.””

The attorney hesitated.

“Mr. Whitmore, I think you should see this in person.””

Daniel looked through the glass wall toward the lobby.

The staff were preparing the grand ballroom for the evening event.

Guests would begin arriving in less than two hours.

Vanessa would be there.

Victor would be there.

And somewhere inside the hotel, someone was still trying to get their hands on Emily's signature.

Daniel picked up his jacket.

“I'm coming to your office.””

Then the attorney said one final sentence.

“Mr. Whitmore, there's a name on your father's list that you may find difficult to believe.””

Daniel stopped.

“Whose name?””

May you like

The attorney answered quietly.

*“Helen Brooks.””*
