Chapter 1: The Price of Betrayal

“Let her speak.””

Arthur Reed’s voice cut through the bright living room like a blade.

For one terrible second, nobody moved.

Sunlight poured through the enormous windows of his luxury home, illuminating the pale sofa, the marble coffee table, and the diamond ring on Vanessa’s left hand. Everything looked expensive. Everything looked perfect.

Except for his sixteen-year-old daughter, Maya, who stood beside the sofa with one hand pressed against her chest.

Arthur stepped between his stepdaughter and his wife.

“Brianna,” he said firmly, “take your hand off her mouth.””

Brianna Cole, nineteen, slowly lowered her hand. Her sleek ponytail swung over the shoulder of her olive pantsuit as she backed away. Her face was pale, but her eyes burned with anger.

Maya tried to speak.

Nothing came out.

“Dad,” she whispered.

Arthur turned immediately.

“I'm right here, sweetheart. What's wrong?””

Maya shook her head, struggling to draw a comfortable breath. Her beige top hung loosely over her thin frame, and the straps of her worn backpack dug into her shoulders.

Vanessa Reed adjusted her purple one-shoulder dress.

“Arthur, this is getting ridiculous,” she said.

“Brianna has been making accusations all morning. You know how emotional she gets.””

Brianna let out a short, disbelieving laugh.

“Emotional?”” she repeated.

She reached into her handbag and pulled out a thick stack of papers.

“Mom, I gave you three chances to tell him the truth.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“Put those away.””

“No.””

“Brianna, I said put them away.””

“And I said no!””

The sudden shout startled Maya. She gripped the edge of the sofa, and Arthur noticed her fingers trembling.

He looked at Brianna.

“What are those papers?””

Brianna swallowed, unfolded the statements, and held them out.

“Bank records,” she said.

“And copies of the hospital letters you've been hiding from Maya.””

Arthur took the papers.

The first page showed a balance. The next showed a transfer. The third showed a transaction that made his eyebrows draw together.

He read the number again.

Then a third time.

“Fifty thousand dollars?”” he murmured.

Vanessa took one step toward him.

“Arthur, please. Let me explain.””

He raised his eyes.

“Explain what?””

Brianna's hands shook as she pointed to the transfer record.

“She spent Maya's fifty-thousand-dollar surgery fund on jewelry.””

Silence settled over the room.

Arthur looked down at the statement. The transfer had been made from the dedicated medical account he'd established for Maya's upcoming heart surgery. The receiving account belonged to a jewelry boutique in Manhattan.

The date was six weeks earlier.

His gaze drifted to Vanessa's diamond ring.

The ring caught the sunlight.

For the first time in their marriage, Arthur looked at his wife as though he had never met her.

“You used her treatment money for that?””

Vanessa's lips parted.

“I was going to replace it.””

Arthur stared at her.

“With what?””

“My own money.””

“You told me the account was untouched.””

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake?”” Brianna interrupted.

“You bought the ring, a necklace, and matching earrings. You even paid for expedited delivery.””

Vanessa snapped toward her daughter.

“Do not speak to me that way!””

“Then stop lying to him!””

Arthur lifted his hand.

“Both of you. Stop.””

He turned to Vanessa, keeping his voice low.

“Where is the money?””

“I told you, I was going to replace it.””

“That's not an answer.””

“I needed something for myself, Arthur. Do you have any idea what it's like to live in this house and feel invisible?””

Arthur blinked.

“Maya has a heart condition.””

“And I have needs, too!””

For a moment, the words seemed to hang in the air, too ugly to belong in a home where a child was waiting for surgery.

Brianna stared at her mother.

“You spent the money while Maya was asking whether she could afford the operation.””

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

“She has doctors. She has insurance. Her father has plenty of money.””

Arthur's fingers curled around the statements.

“The fund existed because the insurance wouldn't cover everything.””

“I knew you would pay whatever was necessary.””

“With what?”” he demanded.

“Money that isn't there anymore?””

Vanessa looked away.

That was answer enough.

Arthur turned toward Maya.

She was gripping the sofa with both hands now. Her face had lost its color, and a sheen of perspiration glistened along her hairline.

“Maya?””

She tried to straighten.

“I'm okay, Dad.””

But her voice was barely audible.

Arthur moved toward her.

“Sweetheart, look at me.””

Maya lifted her eyes. Fear had replaced the stubborn little smile she had worn all morning.

“My chest hurts.””

Arthur dropped the papers.

“What?””

“It's tight.”” She pressed her palm against the center of her chest.

“I can't—”

Her knees buckled.

Arthur caught her before she hit the floor.

“Maya!””

Brianna rushed forward and knelt beside them.

“Call 911!”” she shouted.

Arthur lowered Maya carefully onto the rug, supporting her head with one hand.

“I'm calling. Maya, stay with me.””

Vanessa stood motionless near the coffee table.

“Arthur, maybe she's just panicking,” she said.

He looked up at her with an expression she had never seen before.

“Don't you dare tell me what my daughter is feeling.””

He pulled out his phone and called emergency services.

“My sixteen-year-old daughter has a heart condition,” he said, forcing himself to speak clearly.

“She's having chest pain, and she's struggling to breathe. We need an ambulance immediately.””

Brianna took Maya's hand.

“Hey, Maya. Look at me. Remember when you said you wanted to see the ocean after your surgery?””

Maya's eyes fluttered.

“Yeah.””

“Then you're going to see it. You're going to complain about the sand getting everywhere, and I'm going to tell you that you complained the whole time.””

A faint, frightened smile touched Maya's lips.

Arthur brushed a braid away from her forehead.

“Help is coming, baby. Daddy's here.””

Behind them, Vanessa finally moved.

She reached for the papers scattered across the rug.

Brianna saw her.

“Don't touch those.””

Vanessa froze.

“They're private financial documents.””

“They're evidence.””

“I'm your mother.””

Brianna rose slowly, placing herself between Vanessa and the papers.

“And she's your daughter.””

For the first time, Vanessa seemed to understand that Brianna wasn't going to protect her.

Outside, a siren began to wail.

Arthur tightened his hold around Maya's hand.

Then the dispatcher spoke through his phone, asking a question that made his stomach turn cold.

“Sir, does your daughter have any medication or emergency instructions we should know about?””

Arthur reached for the medical folder beside the sofa.

It wasn't there.

He looked toward the hallway, where Maya's hospital bag usually sat beside the stairs.

The bag was gone.

And when he turned to Vanessa, she was already backing toward the door.

“Vanessa,” he said quietly.

“Where is Maya's medical folder?””

His wife didn't answer.

She reached for the doorknob.

Brianna's voice stopped her.

“Mom, if you leave now, I'm telling them about the other account, too.””

Vanessa slowly turned around.

Her face changed.

Not guilt.

Not fear.

Recognition.

May you like

As though Brianna had just mentioned a secret Vanessa had spent years making sure nobody discovered.

And Arthur realized the missing surgery money might be only the beginning.
