Chapter 2: The Account Nobody Knew About

The paramedics arrived seven minutes later.

To Arthur, it felt like an hour.

Two uniformed officers followed them into the living room after a dispatcher relayed Brianna's report about the disputed medical funds and Vanessa's attempt to leave.

One paramedic knelt beside Maya while the other opened a medical bag.

“I'm Daniel,” the first man said gently.

“Maya, can you tell me where the pain is?””

Maya pointed to her chest.

“Right here.””

“Can you take a slow breath for me?””

She tried, then winced.

Arthur crouched beside her.

“She has a congenital heart condition,” he explained.

“Her cardiologist scheduled surgery for next month. She's been stable, but she's had episodes of chest discomfort before.””

Daniel nodded and began assessing her.

“Has she taken any medication today?””

“I don't know,” Arthur admitted.

“Her medication and medical instructions were in a folder that seems to have disappeared.””

The second paramedic glanced up.

“Sir, we'll take care of the immediate problem. Do you know the name of her cardiologist?””

Arthur gave it to him, then provided the hospital's name and the details he remembered from Maya's last appointment.

Brianna remained beside Maya, holding her hand.

“I'm right here,” she whispered.

Maya looked at her.

“Don't let them take my dad away.””

Brianna's face crumpled.

“No one's taking your dad anywhere.””

“I heard the police.””

Arthur leaned closer.

“The officers are here because adults have to answer for what they've done. You don't need to worry about any of that.””

Maya swallowed.

“Am I going to have the surgery?””

Arthur felt the question hit harder than anything Vanessa had said.

“Yes,” he answered immediately.

“We're going to get you the treatment you need.””

He didn't know how he would make that promise possible yet.

He only knew he would.

The paramedic checked Maya's vital signs, attached monitoring equipment, and exchanged a brief look with his partner.

“We're transporting her,” Daniel said.

“We need to get her evaluated as soon as possible.””

Arthur nodded.

“I'm coming with her.””

“Of course. We'll need some information for the receiving team.””

As the paramedics prepared the stretcher, Officer Lewis approached Brianna.

“Miss Cole, you said you have financial records?””

Brianna collected the statements from the coffee table.

“Yes. These show the transfer out of Maya's medical account. I also have screenshots of messages between my mother and me.””

Vanessa, standing near the windows, turned sharply.

“You had no right to go through my phone!””

Brianna didn't look at her.

“You sent those messages to me.””

“Those were private conversations.””

“You told me the ring was a gift from a friend. Then you asked me to help you make sure Dad never found out where the money came from.””

Officer Lewis held out her hand.

“Let's take this one step at a time. Do you have the original messages?””

“Yes.””

“Please preserve them. Don't delete anything or alter the screenshots. We'll explain how to submit them properly.””

Vanessa crossed the room.

“This is a family matter. I want a lawyer before anyone takes anything from my daughter.””

Officer Lewis remained calm.

“You're welcome to seek legal advice. Right now, we're documenting a report involving money designated for a minor's medical care.””

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“And I suppose you believe every word she's saying?””

“No,” the officer replied.

“I believe evidence needs to be examined before anyone reaches a conclusion.””

For a moment, Vanessa looked almost relieved.

Then Brianna opened her handbag again.

“There is something else.””

Arthur, who was helping the paramedics position Maya on the stretcher, turned toward her.

“What is it?””

Brianna removed a folded sheet of paper.

“I found this in Mom's desk drawer yesterday.””

Vanessa went white.

“Brianna, don't.””

Brianna handed the document to Officer Lewis.

It was a bank statement from an account Arthur didn't recognize.

The account holder's name was Vanessa Reed.

The statement showed repeated transfers from a second account associated with the family.

Arthur stared at the page.

“What is this?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“It's my personal account.””

“Why are there transfers from the household account?””

“I managed the household expenses. You told me to take care of the bills.””

“I told you to pay the bills. I didn't tell you to move money into a private account.””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“You've always trusted me with the finances.””

The sentence landed with a sickening weight.

She was right.

Arthur had trusted her.

When his first wife died, he'd been so consumed by grief and Maya's medical needs that he had let Vanessa take over the household administration. She had seemed organized, attentive, and capable.

She knew which bills were due.

She knew the passwords to the accounts.

She knew where every important document was kept.

He had mistaken access for responsibility.

“How much?”” he asked.

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

Officer Lewis examined the statement.

“Mr. Reed, this document appears to show several transfers. We would need the underlying records to establish what they mean.””

Arthur nodded, unable to tear his eyes away from the numbers.

The amounts weren't enormous individually.

Two thousand dollars.

Four thousand.

Three thousand five hundred.

But they repeated over several months.

And the dates went back nearly a year.

Brianna spoke quietly.

“I think she was taking money before the surgery fund disappeared.””

Vanessa turned on her.

“You don't know anything about our finances!””

“Then why did you tell me to lie about the ring?””

“Because you were asking questions you had no business asking!””

“Because Maya was crying in her bedroom, wondering whether Dad could afford her operation!””

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

“I was trying to keep this family together!””

Brianna stared at her.

“By stealing from a sick child?””

“I did not steal anything!””

The room fell silent.

Even Vanessa seemed startled by the force of her own denial.

Officer Lewis stepped between the women.

“Ma'am, I need you to remain here while we finish taking statements.””

Vanessa looked toward Arthur.

“Tell them to stop treating me like a criminal.””

Arthur stood beside the stretcher.

“I can't do that.””

“You're my husband.””

“And Maya is my daughter.””

The paramedics began wheeling Maya toward the front door.

She reached for Arthur, and he took her hand.

“Dad?””

“I'm here.””

“Don't forget my backpack.””

The request was so ordinary, so heartbreakingly young, that Arthur nearly lost control of his voice.

“I won't, sweetheart.””

Brianna grabbed the worn backpack from beside the sofa and hurried after them.

At the doorway, Maya turned her head slightly.

“Bri?””

“Yeah?””

“Thank you for telling him.””

Brianna pressed her lips together.

“I should have done it sooner.””

Maya's eyes closed as the paramedics moved her outside.

Arthur followed, his hand still wrapped around hers until they reached the ambulance.

Daniel looked at him.

“You can ride with us, sir. We'll need to keep the space around the stretcher clear.””

Arthur climbed inside.

Before the doors closed, he looked back through the open doorway.

Vanessa stood beneath the bright windows, the diamond ring still glittering on her finger.

Officer Lewis was speaking to her.

The second officer was examining the documents Brianna had supplied.

Vanessa looked directly at Arthur.

Her lips moved.

He couldn't hear her through the ambulance's open doors.

But he understood the words.

You owe me.

Then the doors shut.

As the ambulance pulled away, Arthur sat beside Maya and listened to the steady electronic beeps of the monitor.

His phone vibrated.

A message had arrived from an unknown number.

*You need to ask Brianna what happened the night your first wife died.*

Arthur read it once.

Then again.

His late wife, Denise, had died three years earlier after a sudden medical emergency. The official explanation had been straightforward. A complication, an ambulance, a hospital, and a loss that had shattered their family.

He had never questioned the account.

He had never imagined there was anything to question.

He looked at Maya, who was fighting to stay awake.

Then he looked at the message again.

A second text appeared.

*Vanessa didn't just take the surgery money. She's been hiding something about Denise.*

Arthur's fingers went numb around the phone.

He looked through the ambulance window at the road rushing past.

Then he called Brianna.

She answered immediately.

“Arthur?””

“Where are you?””

“I'm still at the house. The officers are here.””

“Brianna, I just received a message about your mother and Denise.””

Silence.

“Brianna?””

Her voice broke.

“Arthur, I was hoping she wouldn't make me tell you this.””

Arthur sat perfectly still.

“Tell me what?””

Brianna drew a shaky breath.

“The night your first wife died, I heard my mother on the phone with someone.””

“What did she say?””

May you like

Brianna began to cry.

“She said, 'If Denise wakes up, she'll tell him everything.''”
