Chapter 5: The Attorney Who Knew Too Much

Richard Hale's office occupied the third floor of an old brick building downtown.

By nine the following morning, Daniel had arranged a meeting with the attorney, and Amara had insisted on attending by video from the hospital.

Her doctors had approved a short period of work and conversation, provided she rested afterward. She sat propped against two pillows, wearing a loose cardigan over her maternity dress, with her phone positioned beside the laptop.

Daniel joined the meeting from his office.

Richard appeared on the screen wearing a dark suit and narrow silver glasses. He was in his late sixties, with neatly combed white hair and a face that revealed little.

“Mr. Brooks,” he said.

“I understand this concerns a document involving Lucas Mitchell.””

“It does,” Daniel replied.

“We have reason to believe you received an original security agreement shortly before Lucas's death.””

Richard adjusted his glasses.

“I handled several matters for Mitchell Holdings. You'll need to be more specific.””

Daniel shared the photograph Vanessa had sent.

Richard's expression changed almost imperceptibly.

“I recognize the format.””

“Can you confirm whether you have the original?””

“I would need to review my records.””

“Then please do so.””

Richard glanced away from the camera.

“I can't discuss confidential client matters without determining who is entitled to the information.””

Amara leaned toward her microphone.

“My husband is dead. I am the beneficiary of his estate, and my father is trying to sell the house he left me. If this document affects my rights, I need to know what it says.””

Richard looked directly at her.

“Mrs. Mitchell, I appreciate your situation. But your father's affairs and your husband's estate are not necessarily the same matter.””

“Then tell me which part belongs to me.””

He paused.

“That depends on the agreement.””

Daniel intervened.

“We aren't asking you to disclose privileged advice. We're asking you to preserve the original document and confirm whether it exists.””

Richard folded his hands.

“I'll review my files and respond through the appropriate channels.””

“Can you give us a deadline?”” Daniel asked.

“Forty-eight hours.””

Amara's fingers tightened around the edge of her blanket.

“My father is trying to complete a sale now. Forty-eight hours could be too late.””

“The property transfer is currently suspended, isn't it?””

“Yes,” Daniel said.

“But we need to ensure the records are preserved.””

Richard nodded.

“I understand.””

The meeting ended without another commitment.

Amara stared at the blank screen.

“He knows something.””

“Possibly,” Daniel said.

“But his reluctance could also reflect professional obligations. We need evidence before drawing conclusions.””

“Why would Lucas send an important agreement to him eleven days before he died?””

“We need to establish that first. The date on the storage record doesn't necessarily mean Lucas personally delivered it.””

Amara rubbed her forehead.

“Everything feels like a maze.””

“Then we'll take it one turn at a time.””

Daniel opened the trust documents again.

“I've asked Evelyn to compare the security agreement with the trust's creation and funding dates. If the agreement predates the trust, that may matter. If it came afterward, we need to understand why.””

“What if Lucas was trying to help my father?””

“Then the question becomes whether the obligation was valid, what collateral was pledged, and whether Charles is entitled to enforce it.””

Amara looked away.

She hated that possibility because it complicated the simple story she had built in her mind.

Her father was greedy. Her husband had protected her. The trust would stop the sale.

Now she was beginning to understand that protecting an asset could involve more than proving someone else had lied.

Her phone buzzed.

Vanessa had sent another message.

*I found the folder Charles was looking for. I think it's the original.*

A second message followed.

*He left it in the study, but he's coming back soon. I don't know what to do.*

Amara immediately called her.

“Vanessa, don't take anything that doesn't belong to you. Don't alter the documents. Photograph the folder where you found it and tell Daniel exactly where it is.””

“I can do that,” Vanessa whispered.

“Are you alone?””

“Yes. Charles went to a meeting with his accountant.””

“Then why are you still in the house?””

“I came back to collect some clothes. He told me not to return, but I still live there.””

Amara closed her eyes briefly.

Even now, Vanessa was worried about losing her home.

“Can you safely leave?””

“I think so.””

“Then leave. Send Daniel the photographs from somewhere safe. Don't confront Charles.””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Amara, there's something else.””

“What?””

“I found a letter with the folder. It has Lucas's name on it.””

Amara sat up.

“What does it say?””

“I haven't read the whole thing. I only saw the first paragraph.””

“Read it to me.””

Vanessa's breathing grew uneven.

“It says, 'Charles, I am prepared to honor the agreement only if you stop using Amara's inheritance to cover the company's liabilities.''”

Amara's stomach twisted.

“I can't. The rest is folded underneath another document.””

“Then photograph it.””

“I will.””

Amara ended the call and looked at Daniel.

He had heard every word.

“That could be important,” he said.

“But we need the full letter and its context.””

“What if Lucas really did agree to help my father?””

“Helping someone financially doesn't give them unlimited authority over your property. We need to understand the precise arrangement.””

Daniel stood and paced toward the window.

“There's another possibility. Lucas may have agreed to secure a limited obligation, then later discovered that Charles was exceeding the agreement. That could explain why he established the trust and why he documented his concerns.””

Amara thought about the dates.

Eleven days before his death, Lucas had sent the original file to Richard Hale.

Had he been trying to protect her? Had he been preparing to challenge Charles? Or had he simply been trying to settle a financial dispute before it damaged the family?

She didn't know.

And not knowing was becoming unbearable.

At noon, Daniel received an email from Evelyn.

The subject line read:

*PRELIMINARY REVIEW — SECURITY AGREEMENT.*

He opened it.

The agreement appeared to grant Charles a limited security interest connected to a business loan. However, the property description in the photographed copy was incomplete, and the document referred to an attached schedule that wasn't included.

“There's an attachment missing,” Daniel said.

Amara leaned toward the screen.

“What kind of attachment?””

“A schedule identifying the collateral and any conditions on enforcement. Without it, we can't determine the full scope of the agreement.””

“So my father could be showing people only part of the document.””

“That's possible.””

A new message arrived.

This time, it was from Vanessa.

She had attached two photographs.

The first showed a handwritten letter from Lucas.

The second showed a page with a detailed property description.

Daniel enlarged the second image.

His face changed.

“Amara, look at this.””

The page listed the commercial property Lucas had inherited from his grandfather.

It also listed an investment account.

The house where Amara had grown up was not included.

Neither was the home Lucas had shared with her.

Daniel read the paragraph beneath the property list.

“The security interest applies solely to the assets identified in Schedule A. No other property, whether owned individually or held in trust, may be treated as collateral without separate written consent.””

Amara stared at him.

“Then the house was never part of the agreement?””

“Not according to this page.””

“Can my father still use the document to sell it?””

“Not on the basis of this language alone. But we need to verify that this is the authentic schedule and that it belongs to the executed agreement.””

Amara exhaled shakily.

For the first time since discovering the document, hope returned.

Then Daniel opened the photograph of Lucas's letter.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

*Charles,*

*I agreed to help you keep Mitchell Holdings alive because you promised that the money would protect our family's future. I did not agree to let you place Amara's inheritance at risk. If you attempt to transfer her property without her consent, I will terminate the arrangement and notify the trustee.*

The letter continued for several paragraphs.

Lucas described missed payments, unexplained withdrawals, and his growing concern that Charles was using company funds to cover personal expenses.

At the bottom, he had written one final sentence.

*If anything happens to me before this is resolved, Richard Hale has instructions to preserve the original records and deliver them to the trustee.*

Amara pressed a hand over her mouth.

“Lucas knew.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“He knew there was a serious dispute. This letter suggests he was trying to limit the agreement and preserve evidence.””

“Then why didn't he tell me?””

“I can't answer that. He may have believed he could resolve it without involving you. He may have been trying to protect you from additional stress. We would need more evidence to understand his thinking.””

Amara read the letter again.

Her husband hadn't necessarily betrayed her.

He might have been trying to stop a betrayal before it reached her.

But that still left one terrible question.

What had happened during the eleven days between Lucas sending the agreement to Richard Hale and Lucas's death?

Daniel received a call.

He answered, listened, and slowly sat down.

“Are you certain?”” he asked.

A pause.

“Please send that to me immediately.””

He ended the call.

Amara watched his face.

“What happened?””

“Evelyn contacted the lender listed in the agreement. They've confirmed that the original loan was issued to Mitchell Holdings.””

“Then the debt was real?””

“Yes. But the lender also says it received a notice from Lucas shortly before his death, disputing Charles's claimed collateral rights.””

“What did the notice say?””

Daniel opened the email.

“It stated that the company had defaulted on its obligations, but that the default did not authorize Charles to seize assets outside the agreed collateral.””

Amara closed her eyes.

“So Lucas was fighting him.””

“It appears that way.””

“Then why did Charles keep going?””

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he read the final line of the lender's email.

The lender had also confirmed that someone submitted a second security document after Lucas's death.

A document that expanded the collateral description to include the family house.

The signature at the bottom purported to belong to Lucas.

But the date was three days after his death.

Amara stared at the screen.

“That is impossible.””

“Yes,” Daniel said quietly.

“And if the date and signature are authentic to the record, we need to investigate who submitted it and how it was accepted.””

He looked at the attached file.

Then he turned the screen toward her.

The document bore the name of the person who had certified it.

*Richard Hale.*
