Chapter 7: The Recording That Could Send Me to Prison

“Mr. Carter, I need you to understand the seriousness of this situation.””

Officer Lewis's voice came through my phone, calm and measured.

I stood beside the living room window, watching my eight-year-old son stack wooden blocks on the coffee table while my seventeen-year-old daughter sat beside him, pretending not to listen.

Evelyn stood across from me with the forged authorization displayed on her tablet.

“I understand,” I replied.

“But I did not authorize that transfer.””

“Your brother has provided an audio recording in which a voice identified as yours appears to approve the transaction.””

“Then I want the original file examined.””

“That will be part of the investigation. For now, we need to arrange an interview.””

“I'll cooperate through my attorney.””

“That's your right, sir. We will contact counsel to coordinate.””

The call ended.

I lowered the phone.

For six years, Daniel had used my trust to build his position inside Carter Holdings. Now he was using my identity to protect himself.

Evelyn placed her tablet on the table.

“He's trying to make you the responsible party before the forensic team traces the money.””

“Can he do that?””

“He can make the allegation. Whether he can support it is another matter.””

She enlarged the authorization.

My name appeared beneath the transfer instructions. The electronic signature looked convincing, even to me.

But the timestamp was wrong.

I had been at a hospital appointment with Ethan that afternoon. His pediatrician had diagnosed an ear infection, and I had spent nearly two hours in the waiting room with him.

I remembered because Ethan had fallen asleep against my shoulder while a cartoon played silently on the television.

“I wasn't in the office when this was approved,” I said.

“Do you have evidence?””

“The hospital appointment. My calendar. The check-in records.””

“Good. Preserve everything. Don't contact Daniel directly, and don't discuss the allegation with anyone outside your legal team.””

I nodded.

Then I glanced toward the sofa.

Maya had stopped pretending not to listen.

“Dad?””

I crossed the room and sat beside her.

“What's wrong, sweetheart?””

“Are they going to arrest you?””

The question was barely audible.

I looked at Ethan, who had abandoned his blocks and was now watching us.

“No one has told me that,” I said honestly.

“There's an investigation, and I'm going to cooperate with it.””

“But Uncle Daniel says you stole money.””

My chest tightened.

“When did he say that?””

Maya reached into the pocket of her denim jacket and pulled out her phone.

“He sent me a message.””

She handed it to me.

The message read:

Your father is going to lose everything because he chose to believe you. You can still fix this. Tell the board you misunderstood what you found, and I'll make sure he isn't blamed for the transfer.

Below it was another message.

If you care about your father, you'll stop this before it gets worse.

I read both messages twice.

Daniel wasn't merely defending himself anymore. He was trying to frighten a teenager into taking responsibility for a financial crime she hadn't committed.

I handed the phone back.

“Don't reply to him.””

Maya's eyes filled.

“He says everything is my fault.””

“It isn't.””

“He says if I hadn't opened that cabinet, none of this would have happened.””

I took her hands.

“Listen to me carefully. You found something that needed to be examined. The person responsible is the person who committed the wrongdoing, not the person who discovered it.””

She lowered her head.

“I should have told you sooner.””

“You tried to tell me. I didn't listen.””

Her lips trembled.

“I thought you were going to hate me.””

I pulled her into my arms.

“I am so sorry I made you feel that way.””

She held on to me tightly.

Across the room, Ethan climbed down from the sofa and joined us, wrapping his arms around our shoulders.

“Dad,” he whispered, “we believe you.””

I closed my eyes.

For the first time since the morning the recording exposed Nicole and Daniel, I felt the full weight of what my choices had cost my children.

They shouldn't have needed to become brave enough to defend me.

I should have been the one protecting them.

A knock sounded at the front door.

Evelyn went to answer it.

A moment later, she returned with a woman carrying a leather briefcase. She introduced herself as Simone Price, an attorney specializing in corporate fraud investigations. Evelyn had contacted her after the call from Officer Lewis.

Simone greeted me, then placed her briefcase on the dining table.

“Mr. Carter, I understand the allegations concern an electronic authorization and an audio recording.””

“Yes.””

“Before we do anything else, I want to establish a timeline. Tell me exactly where you were on the afternoon of the transfer.””

I showed her my calendar, the hospital appointment confirmation, and the message from Ethan's pediatrician.

She reviewed each item carefully.

“Did anyone else have access to your executive account?””

“Daniel had administrative access to several company systems. Nicole also had access to some archived records in the past, but I don't know what credentials remain active.””

Simone made a note.

“Do not assume who accessed the account. We need the logs.””

Evelyn nodded.

“The independent auditor has already requested them.””

“Good,” Simone said.

“And the recording?””

“I haven't heard it.””

“Then we won't speculate about it until we obtain the original file and examine its provenance.””

She turned toward Maya.

“Has your uncle contacted you directly?””

Maya nodded and showed her the messages.

Simone's expression became serious.

“Please preserve these. Don't delete them, and don't respond. We'll make sure your father knows about any further contact.””

Maya nodded.

For the next hour, Simone worked with Evelyn to assemble the records that could establish my whereabouts, identify the transfer's approval path, and document Daniel's attempts to pressure Maya.

Then my phone rang again.

This time, it was Patricia Greene, the board chairwoman.

“Richard, the board has convened an emergency session. Daniel has submitted the recording to the directors and requested that you be removed from executive duties pending the investigation.””

I stared at the window.

“What did the board decide?””

“We have not voted. But several directors are concerned about the potential exposure.””

“Have they seen the forensic report?””

“Not yet.””

“Then they shouldn't be making a judgment about the recording.””

“I agree. That's why I've asked Simone to attend as your counsel.””

I looked at Simone.

She nodded.

“I'll be there,” I told Patricia.

When I ended the call, Maya stood.

“I'm coming with you.””

I started to object.

Then I remembered the promise I had made at the hospital.

I would stop shutting her out of the rooms where decisions about her life were being made.

“All right,” I said.

“But you stay with Evelyn, and you don't engage with Daniel.””

“I won't.””

Ethan raised his hand from the sofa.

“Can I come too?””

I smiled sadly.

“Not this time, buddy. You'll stay here with Marcus. We'll call you as soon as we know more.””

He looked disappointed, but nodded.

Before leaving, I knelt in front of him.

“You did something very brave by telling me what you heard. You don't have to solve the grown-ups' problems anymore.””

Ethan wrapped his arms around my neck.

“Promise you won't stop listening?””

I hugged him tightly.

“I promise.””

At 2:15 p.m., Maya, Simone, and I entered the boardroom.

Daniel was already there.

He sat beside two directors who had previously supported his financial proposals. His charcoal suit was immaculate, his hair perfectly trimmed, and his expression composed.

A laptop stood open before him.

He looked at Maya and smiled without warmth.

“I'm surprised you brought her.””

I pulled out a chair.

“She's the person you keep trying to silence.””

Daniel turned to Patricia.

“I'd like the recording played before this meeting becomes another family argument.””

Patricia nodded.

“Proceed.””

Daniel pressed a key.

My voice filled the room.

“Move the funds before the end of the quarter. I don't want another delay.””

A second voice, supposedly Daniel's, answered.

“And the trust?””

My voice replied, “We'll deal with that separately. Just make sure the transfer goes through.””

The recording ended.

Several directors exchanged uneasy glances.

Daniel folded his hands.

“You heard it yourselves. Richard authorized the transaction.””

I remained still.

Simone leaned forward.

“Mr. Daniel Carter, where did this file originate?””

“From my business records.””

“Which records?””

“A secure archive.””

“Can you provide the original device on which it was recorded?””

Daniel's expression tightened.

“The file was transferred electronically.””

“From which device?””

“I don't recall.””

“Who created it?””

“I did.””

“Where and when?””

Daniel looked toward Patricia.

“Is this really necessary?””

“Yes,” Patricia replied.

“Answer the question.””

Daniel shifted in his chair.

“I recorded the conversation in my office.””

“What date?””

He named the afternoon of the transfer.

Simone nodded slowly.

“Thank you.””

She turned to the board.

“The audio is an allegation, not a verified fact. We have requested the original source file and associated metadata. Until those are examined, no one should draw a conclusion about its authenticity.””

Daniel gave a small laugh.

“Convenient.””

Simone ignored him.

“Mr. Carter, the hospital records indicate Richard was accompanying his son at a pediatric appointment during the time the transfer was allegedly authorized. We have also requested the executive account's access logs.””

Daniel's smile faded.

“Anyone can arrange a hospital appointment.””

I felt anger rise, but I kept my voice level.

“Ethan was sick, Daniel. I was there because I was his father.””

“And I was protecting the company while you were distracted.””

“No. You were moving money through an account you controlled.””

Daniel slammed his hand against the table.

“You have no proof!””

Patricia struck the table once with her pen.

“Enough.””

Silence fell.

Then the board's technical adviser, a gray-haired man named Leonard Shaw, entered carrying a laptop.

“Patricia, the initial system logs are available.””

Daniel's face changed.

Leonard connected his computer to the conference display.

“The authorization was submitted through Richard Carter's executive account. However, the login originated from a device registered to Daniel Carter's office.””

A murmur swept around the table.

Daniel stood.

“That proves nothing. My staff routinely use company equipment.””

Leonard continued.

“The transaction also passed through an administrator override. That override was generated using credentials assigned to Daniel Carter.””

Daniel's face reddened.

“They were compromised.””

Simone spoke calmly.

“Then we need to identify how.””

Leonard opened another screen.

“There's one additional issue. The audio file Daniel submitted was exported from the same workstation used to prepare the transfer authorization.””

I stared at the display.

“Can you determine whether the recording was edited?””

“We haven't completed the analysis,” Leonard replied.

“But the file contains a gap in its internal sequence, and its creation timestamp is later than the date Daniel claims it was recorded.””

Daniel's chair scraped backward.

“This is ridiculous.””

Patricia looked at him.

“Sit down.””

He remained standing.

“You're all making a terrible mistake.””

“No,” she said.

“We're asking questions.””

Daniel looked toward Maya.

“You think this is over?””

I rose.

“Don't speak to her.””

He pointed at me.

“You have no idea what you're protecting.””

Maya stood before I could stop her.

“I know what you're doing.””

Every face turned toward her.

She was shaking, but she didn't sit down.

“You told me Dad would send me away if he thought I was pregnant. You gave me the key to his cabinet. You told me to take pictures of the documents. Then you accused me of stealing them.””

Daniel's face tightened.

“Sit down, Maya.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked, but she continued.

“You told me Grandpa's trust was mine. Then you said I was too young to understand it. You made me think Dad would hate me if I told him what I found.””

She wiped her cheeks.

“And when Dad finally believed me, you started threatening him.””

The room remained silent.

Maya looked at the directors.

“I'm seventeen. I don't understand everything about money or company records. But I know the difference between someone helping me and someone using me.””

Daniel stared at her.

For the first time, he looked genuinely exposed.

Patricia stood.

“The board will suspend Mr. Daniel Carter's access to company systems immediately. An independent review will determine the next steps.””

Two security officers entered the room.

Daniel gathered his phone and papers.

“You can't throw me out of a company my father built.””

I met his eyes.

“It's also the company my father wanted us to protect.””

He paused beside my chair.

“You think the recording is the only thing I have?””

I didn't answer.

He leaned closer.

“Ask Nicole what she signed the night your father died.””

Then he walked out between the security officers.

Maya sat down, trembling.

I put my arm around her shoulders.

Simone began speaking with the board about preserving evidence, while Leonard prepared to secure the workstation and account logs.

But I couldn't stop thinking about Daniel's final words.

Ask Nicole what she signed the night your father died.

When the meeting ended, I called my wife.

She answered immediately.

“Richard?””

“Daniel says you signed something the night my father died.””

Silence.

“Nicole, what did you sign?””

Her voice broke.

“The original custody agreement.””

I gripped the phone.

“What custody agreement?””

She began to cry.

“The one that gave Ava to her adoptive parents.””

I closed my eyes.

“Why would Daniel know about that?””

“Because he was there.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

Nicole's next words changed everything.

“Richard, Daniel wasn't just helping me protect Ava. He was the person who arranged the placement.””

And suddenly, I understood that my brother's involvement in our family's secrets had begun long before my father's final warning.

May you like

He had been there from the beginning.

And whatever he had done to secure his control, he had left a trail of documents that might finally expose him.
