Chapter 8: The Night My Father Died
I drove home with Maya beside me and Simone following in a separate car.
The city moved past the windows in a blur of brake lights and afternoon traffic, but my mind remained fixed on Nicole's confession.
Daniel had arranged Ava's placement.
He had been present when my wife signed the custody agreement.
And he had used that secret to control her for years.
When we arrived, Nicole was waiting in the study with Evelyn. A folder lay open on my father's old desk.
She looked up as I entered.
“Richard, I can explain.””
I closed the door behind me.
“You've said that several times today.””
“I know.””
“Then stop telling me you can explain and start telling me the truth.””
She nodded, wiping her cheeks.
Maya remained beside the doorway.
I looked at her.
“Sweetheart, you don't have to sit through this.””
“I want to know,” she said.
“If it's about our family, I want to know.””
I hesitated.
Then I nodded.
“Okay. But if it becomes too much, you can leave whenever you want.””
She took a seat beside Evelyn.
Nicole drew a shaky breath.
“When I was twenty-one, I became pregnant. Ava's father was a man I had been dating. He disappeared when I told him about the baby. My parents refused to help me, and I was working temporary jobs with no health insurance.””
She looked down at her hands.
“I met your father through the company. He treated me kindly. When I went into labor, he arranged for me to receive medical care.””
I remembered my father mentioning a young woman who had needed help.
He had described her as a person going through a difficult time.
He had never told me she was Nicole.
“He paid the hospital expenses,” she continued.
“After Ava was born, I learned about an adoption program that could place her with a stable family. I wanted her to have opportunities I couldn't provide.””
“Did you want to give her up?”” Maya asked.
Nicole looked at her.
“I wanted her to have a safe home. But I didn't want to lose her.””
Maya lowered her eyes.
“Those aren't the same thing.””
“No,” Nicole whispered.
“They aren't.””
Nicole explained that my father had arranged for an attorney to help with the placement. The adoptive couple lived in Connecticut and had spent years trying to have a child.
The arrangement was supposed to be private.
But Daniel discovered it while reviewing the company's expenses.
“He told me the payments could be treated as unauthorized company spending,” Nicole said.
“He said he could expose me and have me prosecuted.””
I frowned.
“Were the payments authorized?””
“My father approved them as a private assistance arrangement. Evelyn prepared the documents.””
Evelyn nodded.
“I remember the arrangement. But I did not oversee the final placement. Another attorney handled the adoption.””
Nicole continued.
“Daniel said he could make the payments disappear if I helped him with certain company records. At first, I only changed access permissions. Later, he asked me to remove the archive log that showed he had accessed your father's recording.””
I stared at her.
“And you agreed.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you go to the police?””
She looked at me with raw desperation.
“Because he told me he would contact Ava's adoptive parents and tell them I had been involved in financial fraud. He said they would never let me see her again.””
I felt anger rise in my chest.
“So he used your daughter to make you help him hurt mine.””
Nicole covered her mouth.
“Yes.””
Maya stood and walked to the window.
For several moments, she watched the trees moving in the breeze.
Then she turned around.
“Did you know Daniel was going to accuse me of being pregnant?””
Nicole nodded slowly.
“He told me it was the only way to make your father act before thinking.””
Maya's face tightened.
“And you helped him.””
“I did.””
“Why?””
Nicole looked at her.
“Because I was afraid of losing Ava.””
Maya's voice trembled.
“So you decided it was okay to make Dad lose me?””
Nicole began to cry.
“No. I didn't think of it that way.””
“That's the problem,” Maya replied.
“You didn't think about me at all.””
The words landed heavily in the room.
Nicole had no answer.
I wanted to comfort Maya, but I knew she needed the freedom to say what she had been forced to swallow for weeks.
After a moment, she returned to her chair.
I sat across from Nicole.
“Tell me about the night my father died.””
Nicole's hands tightened around a tissue.
“Daniel called me to the hospital. He said your father had left documents that needed to be signed before the estate could be settled.””
“What documents?””
“The custody agreement, and an acknowledgment concerning the company payments.””
I stared at her.
“You signed a company acknowledgment while my father was dying?””
“I didn't understand all of it. Daniel said the document only confirmed that the medical expenses had been approved.””
“Did you read it?””
She shook her head.
“Not carefully enough.””
I stood and walked toward the desk.
“Where is it?””
“I don't know. Daniel kept the original.””
Evelyn leaned forward.
“Did you receive a copy?””
Nicole hesitated.
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“In a box of personal papers. I kept it because I was afraid Daniel would deny what he'd asked me to sign.””
She reached into her purse and removed a small key.
Then she unlocked a drawer in the desk and pulled out a narrow envelope.
The paper inside had yellowed with age.
At the top was the name of Carter Holdings.
Below it was a statement acknowledging a transfer of funds to a private trust.
The signature line bore Nicole's name.
But the final paragraph was what caught my attention.
The undersigned acknowledges that the designated beneficiary shall remain confidential and that no person shall disclose the beneficiary's identity without written authorization from the trustee.
I read it twice.
“Who was the beneficiary?””
Nicole shook her head.
“I was never told.””
Evelyn examined the page.
“This is not the complete agreement. It's an acknowledgment attached to a separate trust instrument.””
“Where's the rest?””
“I don't know,” Nicole said.
I looked at the date.
The document had been signed on the night my father died.
But the transfer referenced in the acknowledgment had occurred four months earlier.
I felt a chill.
“Why would my father wait until his final night to have you sign this?””
Nicole shook her head.
“He didn't ask me to. Daniel did.””
The room went silent.
Evelyn carefully placed the document in a clear protective sleeve.
“We need to verify the signatures and locate the full agreement.””
I nodded.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
You are looking for the wrong child.
I stared at the screen.
Another message arrived.
Ask Richard why his father paid for a second hospital room that night.
I felt my stomach tighten.
I showed the message to Evelyn.
She read it without speaking.
Maya moved closer.
“Dad, what does it mean?””
“I don't know.””
But the words had stirred a memory.
The hospital room.
The night my father died.
The nurse who had asked me to wait outside while the doctors worked.
Daniel telling me to go home and get some rest.
I had refused.
I remembered standing in the corridor for nearly an hour, watching a nurse wheel a bassinet past the intensive care unit.
A bassinet.
I had assumed it belonged to the maternity ward.
Now I wasn't sure.
I called St. Vincent Medical Center and asked to speak with the records department. After explaining the situation and verifying my identity, I requested information about my father's final admission and any related administrative records.
The clerk told me that older records required formal review, but Evelyn was able to provide the necessary authorization for the hospital to begin the process.
While we waited, Nicole sat motionless.
“Richard,” she whispered, “there's something I never told you.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“The night your father died, Daniel told me that if I ever revealed the existence of Ava, he would make sure I never saw her again. But he also said something else.””
She swallowed.
“He said your father had made another promise. A promise to protect a second child.””
My skin prickled.
“Who?””
“I don't know.””
“Nicole, please.””
She shook her head.
“I swear I don't. I thought he meant Maya. I thought the trust was meant to protect her.””
Maya stared at her.
“Then why did Daniel say we were looking for the wrong child?””
Nicole began to cry again.
“I don't know.””
At 5:12 p.m., Evelyn received a call from the hospital records officer.
She listened, asked several questions, then ended the call.
“What is it?”” I asked.
“The hospital has located a supplemental admission record connected to your father's final night. It references a second patient in a private room paid for under a confidential family assistance arrangement.””
My heart hammered.
“Who was the patient?””
“The record is restricted. The hospital will need a formal request and legal review before releasing the identity.””
I paced the study.
“Can they tell us anything else?””
Evelyn looked at her notes.
“The patient was a newborn. The admission occurred approximately forty minutes before your father died.””
Maya covered her mouth.
Ethan, who had been quietly drawing at the kitchen table with Marcus, appeared in the doorway after hearing the raised voices.
“What's a newborn?”” he asked.
I crossed the room and crouched beside him.
“A very young baby, buddy.””
“Was there a baby at Grandpa's hospital?””
I looked at him.
“Possibly.””
He thought about that.
“Did Grandpa know the baby?””
“I think he did.””
Ethan nodded, then looked toward Maya.
“Maybe that's why he wanted us to be nice to each other.””
I hugged him.
“Maybe.””
After Ethan returned to the kitchen, I asked Evelyn to contact the hospital's legal department and request the earliest possible review.
Then I turned to Nicole.
“Did you ever see a baby at the hospital that night?””
She shook her head.
“No. I signed the papers in a consultation room. Daniel told me to leave before you came back from the cafeteria.””
“Why?””
“He said you needed time alone with your father.””
I stared at her.
My brother had separated me from the people and records that might have changed everything.
He had controlled the company documents.
He had controlled Nicole through her secret.
He had convinced me to distrust Maya.
And now a hospital record suggested that my father had been protecting another child.
A child born on the night he died.
My phone rang.
It was Patricia.
“Richard, the board has received a formal demand from Daniel's attorney. He is claiming wrongful suspension and threatening to challenge the company's authority to restrict his access.””
“Let him.””
“There's something else. Daniel has requested an emergency hearing concerning the trust. He claims that the confidential beneficiary is legally entitled to control the disputed assets.””
I looked at Evelyn.
She had gone very still.
“Who is the beneficiary?”” I asked.
Patricia hesitated.
“The filing doesn't identify the person by name. It refers to a protected minor beneficiary and cites a sealed hospital record.””
I closed my eyes.
Daniel had known about the second child for years.
He had used the secret to control Nicole.
And now he was trying to turn it into a legal weapon.
“Patricia,” I said, “preserve every document and every communication related to that filing. No transfers, no changes, no exceptions.””
“I'll issue the directive.””
When the call ended, Evelyn looked at me.
“If Daniel is using a sealed hospital record to challenge the trust, we need to find out whether that record was lawfully obtained and what it actually says.””
I nodded.
Then I looked at Maya.
“I'm sorry, sweetheart. I thought we were nearly at the end of this.””
She shook her head.
“Don't apologize for not knowing everything, Dad.””
She paused.
“Just don't stop listening when it gets hard.””
I pulled her into a hug.
“I won't.””
That evening, we gathered in the kitchen. Ethan ate macaroni at the island while Maya sat beside him, helping him draw a picture of our family.
He had drawn four figures holding hands.
Then he added a fifth.
A small figure with a round head and a tiny body.
Maya looked at the drawing.
“Who's that?””
Ethan shrugged.
“The baby from Grandpa's hospital.””
I stared at the paper.
No one had told him what the child looked like.
He had simply added another person because he believed our family might include someone we hadn't met yet.
My throat tightened.
I placed the drawing beside my father's letter.
For the first time that day, the future felt bigger than the betrayal.
Then Evelyn's phone rang.
She listened silently, her face growing paler with every passing second.
When she hung up, she looked at me.
“The hospital has approved an emergency review of the supplemental record. The legal officer found a second document attached to the file.””
“What document?””
“A birth certificate application.””
My pulse quickened.
“Whose name is on it?””
Evelyn looked down at her notes.
“The child's name is listed as Ava Carter.””
Nicole gasped.
I turned toward her.
“You said Ava was eleven.””
“She is.””
Evelyn shook her head slowly.
“The application we found concerns a different birth date.””
Silence swallowed the room.
Two children.
The same name.
The same family.
And one of them had been hidden so carefully that even Nicole might not have known the full truth.
May you like
Evelyn lifted her eyes.
“Richard, we need to find out whether your father was protecting two children—or whether someone deliberately used Ava's identity to conceal the second child's existence.””
