Chapter 6: The Signature That Could Destroy Us
The hotel was twenty minutes away.
I made it in twelve.
Eleanor sat beside me, gripping the passenger-side handle as I drove through the afternoon traffic.
I kept calling Madison.
She didn't answer.
When we reached the hotel lobby, I spotted her near the elevators.
She was still wearing her cream sweater, but her face looked pale. Her handbag sat open beside her feet.
Marcus stood a few steps away, speaking to a man in a gray suit.
When he saw me, his expression changed.
"David.""
I ignored him.
I walked straight toward Madison.
"Are you okay?""
She nodded, although her eyes were filling.
"I think so.""
"What did you sign?""
She reached into her bag and removed a folder.
Marcus stepped forward.
"David, this is a private family matter.""
I turned toward him.
"Then you shouldn't have involved my money.""
He shook his head.
"You're misunderstanding everything.""
"That's becoming a pattern.""
Madison held out the folder.
"Dad, he said it was just paperwork for the business.""
I opened it.
The first page was a membership agreement for Reed Family Events LLC.
The second was a personal financial guarantee.
The third listed Madison as a fifty-percent owner.
I looked at the signature page.
Madison's signature was there.
So was mine.
I felt my stomach drop.
"Did you sign this?""
Madison shook her head.
"No. Marcus said you had already agreed. He told me the documents were just being updated.""
I looked at the signature.
It was the same imitation Robert had found in the original proposal.
Marcus had used it again.
I closed the folder.
"Where did you get this?""
Marcus stepped closer.
"David, let's not make a scene.""
I turned toward him.
"You forged my signature.""
His face hardened.
"Watch your language.""
"You used my name on a financial guarantee.""
"I have an agreement with Madison.""
"Then why is my signature on it?""
He looked toward the man in the gray suit.
The man stepped forward.
"I'm Daniel Price. I'm representing the company.""
I held up the document.
"Did you verify this signature?""
Daniel adjusted his tie.
"The paperwork was supplied by Mr. Reed.""
"That's not what I asked.""
He looked uncomfortable.
"Mr. Reed assured us the guarantee was approved.""
"By whom?""
He glanced at Marcus.
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"David, you're embarrassing yourself.""
I laughed once.
"You're right. I should be embarrassed. I spent twenty years believing you were simply a man who had made mistakes. I didn't realize you were still making them.""
Marcus took a step toward me.
"Don't talk to me like that.""
Eleanor moved between us.
"Marcus, stop.""
He looked at her.
"You're the one who should stop. You've been hiding things from Madison for years.""
Eleanor's expression changed.
"I hid nothing that would protect you.""
Marcus gave a bitter laugh.
"You people always think you can control the story.""
Madison looked between them.
"What does that mean?""
Marcus turned toward her.
"Sweetheart, this is exactly what I warned you about. David wants you to believe I'm some kind of criminal because he can't stand the idea of you choosing me.""
Madison looked down at the folder.
"Why did you put his signature on the guarantee?""
Marcus blinked.
"I told you. He agreed.""
"But he says he didn't.""
"He's angry.""
"Did he sign it?""
Marcus looked at her.
For the first time, he didn't answer immediately.
I stepped forward.
"Madison, Robert is on his way. Don't sign anything else.""
Marcus shook his head.
"You're making a terrible mistake.""
I looked at him.
"The only mistake I made was assuming you wanted to know your daughter more than you wanted access to my bank account.""
His expression turned ugly.
"You think you're better than me because you had money?""
"No. I think I did better because I stayed.""
Madison began crying.
"Stop!""
Her voice echoed through the lobby.
Everyone turned.
She looked at Marcus.
"Tell me the truth.""
He lowered his voice.
"Madison, let's go somewhere private.""
"No. Tell me now.""
"Your father is twisting things.""
"Which father?""
The question silenced him.
Madison wiped her cheeks.
"Did you know he was paying for the wedding?""
Marcus glanced toward me.
"Yes.""
"Did you know he was paying for my education?""
"Of course.""
"Did you know he adopted me?""
Marcus hesitated.
"Yes.""
"Then why did you tell me he kept you away?""
He opened his mouth.
Closed it.
Then he said, "Because your grandfather interfered.""
Eleanor stepped forward.
"My father paid you to stay away because he knew what you were involved in.""
Marcus turned sharply.
"That was twenty years ago.""
"And the forged guarantee?"" I asked.
"Is that also twenty years ago?""
Marcus looked toward Daniel.
The man in the gray suit quietly closed his briefcase.
"I think we should postpone this meeting," he said.
Marcus glared at him.
"Daniel, sit down.""
"I'm not comfortable proceeding.""
"You've already seen the agreement.""
"And I haven't verified the guarantor's authorization.""
He turned toward me.
"Mr. Whitmore, I apologize. I'll have our legal department review the documentation.""
I nodded.
"Please do.""
Daniel walked toward the reception desk.
Marcus watched him leave.
Then he turned back to Madison.
"You're letting them destroy everything.""
Madison shook her head.
"You destroyed it yourself.""
His expression softened suddenly.
"Sweetheart, I came back because I wanted to know you.""
She looked at him.
"Then why did you ask me for money?""
"I was trying to build something for us.""
"Why did you use Dad's signature?""
"I didn't.""
I opened the folder and pointed to the page.
"Then explain this.""
Marcus stared at the document.
His face had gone pale.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he reached for the folder.
I pulled it away.
"Don't touch it.""
He looked at Madison.
"You need to understand something. Your grandfather wasn't the good man you think he was.""
Madison frowned.
"What are you talking about?""
Marcus smiled faintly.
"Henry didn't pay me to stay away because he was protecting you.""
Eleanor went still.
"Then why did he pay you?""
Marcus looked directly at me.
"Because he wanted to keep you away from the truth.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What truth?""
Marcus looked at Eleanor.
Then at Madison.
And finally, he said:
"Your grandfather didn't just pay me to leave. He paid me because I knew who your mother was before she met David.""
Eleanor's face turned white.
"Marcus, don't.""
Madison stepped closer.
"Mom?""
Marcus continued.
"Your mother told David that I was the man who abandoned her. But there was another man involved. A man Henry spent a fortune trying to keep out of your life.""
I looked at Eleanor.
She couldn't meet my eyes.
"Is that true?"" I asked.
Her lips trembled.
"David, please.""
Marcus smiled.
"Ask her why she never told you about the night Madison was born.""
I turned toward my wife.
"What happened that night?""
Eleanor began shaking her head.
Marcus reached into his jacket and removed a small envelope.
"I brought something.""
He placed it on the reception table.
Madison picked it up before anyone could stop her.
Inside was an old hospital photograph.
A newborn baby wrapped in a white blanket.
On the back was a handwritten note.
*Madison Whitmore — November 14.*
Below it was a second line.
*Biological father: Pending verification.*
Madison looked at the photograph.
Then she looked at Eleanor.
"What does this mean?""
Eleanor covered her mouth.
I took the photograph.
The date was correct.
But the name written beneath it wasn't Marcus Reed.
It was another man's name.
And I recognized it immediately.
It belonged to Henry Whitmore's former business partner.
The man who had disappeared from our lives shortly before Madison was adopted.
The man Henry had always forbidden Eleanor from mentioning.
I looked at my wife.
"Who is he?""
Eleanor began to cry.
Then she whispered:
"David, there's something I should have told you before you ever adopted Madison.""
She reached for my hand.
And before she could finish, Madison looked at the photograph again and said the words that changed everything.
"Wait.""
She turned it over.
Her finger stopped beneath the handwritten name.
Then she looked at me.
"That's not Marcus.""
I nodded slowly.
"No, sweetheart.""
Madison's voice broke.
"Then who is my real father?""
Eleanor closed her eyes.
And from the elevator behind us, an elderly man stepped into the lobby.
He was carrying a black cane.
May you like
His eyes were fixed on the photograph in my hand.
"Because," he said quietly, "I've been waiting twenty-six years for someone to ask that question.""
