Chapter 8: The Letter That Changed Everything

I didn't open the rest of Henry's letter at the hotel.

I couldn't.

Madison was crying, Eleanor looked as though she might collapse, and Richard had just revealed that the man who had controlled our family's history had left behind another secret.

I folded the letter and put it inside my jacket.

"We're going home," I said.

Nobody argued.

During the drive, Madison sat in the back seat with her hands folded in her lap.

Eleanor sat beside her.

Richard had arranged his own transportation.

For twenty minutes, the only sound in the car was the tires against the pavement.

Finally, Madison spoke.

"Mom?""

Eleanor turned.

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"Did you ever love Richard?""

Eleanor looked through the windshield.

"Yes.""

"Did you love Marcus?""

"No.""

Madison looked down.

"Then why did everyone keep lying?""

Eleanor swallowed.

"Because I was afraid of what would happen if the truth came out.""

"That's not an answer.""

"I know.""

Madison leaned against the window.

I kept my eyes on the road.

I wanted to reach back and hold her hand, but I didn't know whether she would welcome it.

When we arrived home, Madison went straight upstairs.

Eleanor followed her.

I remained in the kitchen with Henry's letter.

I opened it carefully.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Henry had always written with a heavy black pen, pressing so hard that his words sometimes appeared on the page beneath.

David,

You were the only person who loved Madison without asking what she could give you in return. I knew that from the beginning.

I stopped.

My eyes burned.

I continued.

I was wrong about you. When Eleanor first told me she was pregnant, I believed Richard was going to destroy everything I had built. I cared more about my reputation than I did about my daughter's happiness.

I made Richard leave. I paid Marcus to disappear. I told myself I was protecting Madison.

But I was also protecting myself.

I sat down.

The next paragraph was harder to read.

When you decided to adopt Madison, I was relieved. You were a good man, and I believed you would give her the stable home I could not provide.

I looked toward the staircase.

I remembered Henry standing in our living room on adoption day, holding Madison's small hand while the judge explained the final paperwork.

He had kissed her forehead.

Then he had shaken my hand.

"I hope you understand what you're taking on," he had said.

I had answered, "She's not something I'm taking on. She's my daughter.""

Henry hadn't replied.

At the time, I thought he was simply overwhelmed.

Now I understood he had been carrying a secret.

The letter continued.

But I need you to know that the adoption file contains a document that was never submitted to the court. It concerns a financial arrangement made in Madison's name.

I sat up.

A financial arrangement?

I turned the page.

Before Madison was born, Richard established a trust for her. It was intended to provide for her education and future. When I discovered the affair, I took control of the trust and transferred the assets into a holding company.

I stopped reading.

There was a second envelope inside the letter.

I pulled it out.

The label read:

*MADISON WHITMORE — BENEFICIARY TRUST.*

I opened it.

The first page showed an account balance from twenty years earlier.

$480,000.

I read the number twice.

Then I looked at the more recent statement attached behind it.

The trust had been transferred into a private family investment structure.

Its current estimated value was $1.8 million.

I felt my pulse quicken.

But something was wrong.

The beneficiary section had been changed.

Madison's name remained.

However, the trustee was now listed as Henry's estate.

And the successor trustee was Eleanor.

I called Robert.

He answered immediately.

"David?""

"I found something.""

I read him the relevant passages.

He asked me to send photographs of the documents.

I did.

After a few minutes, he called back.

"David, don't panic.""

"That's easy for you to say.""

"I understand. But this may be more complicated than a simple inheritance.""

"Can Henry legally control a trust in Madison's name?""

"That depends on how it was established and whether the transfers were valid. I'll need to examine the original trust agreement.""

I looked at the balance again.

"One point eight million dollars.""

Robert was silent.

Then he asked, "Does Madison know?""

"No.""

"Don't tell her until I verify the documents. If this trust exists as described, there may be reporting and tax implications.""

I agreed.

When I hung up, Eleanor came downstairs.

Her eyes were red.

"Is she asleep?""

"She's in her room.""

I pushed the letter toward her.

"Read this.""

She sat down.

As she read, her expression changed.

"Henry kept the trust?""

"Apparently.""

She looked at the statement.

"One point eight million?""

"That's the current estimated value.""

Eleanor covered her mouth.

"I didn't know it had grown that much.""

"You knew about the original trust?""

She nodded.

"Richard established it before Madison was born. He wanted to provide for her.""

"And Henry took control of it?""

"He said it was safer that way.""

I leaned forward.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Eleanor looked miserable.

"Because Henry said it would complicate the adoption. He promised that Madison would receive the money when she turned twenty-five.""

I stared at her.

"She turned twenty-five last year.""

"I know.""

"Did you receive anything?""

"No.""

"Did you ask?""

Eleanor shook her head.

"He told me the trust was still being managed.""

I stood and walked to the window.

The more I learned, the less I understood the family I thought I knew.

Henry had paid Marcus to disappear.

He had paid Richard to leave.

He had controlled the adoption records.

And he had apparently taken control of a trust intended for Madison.

But why had he left everything in Eleanor's name?

My phone vibrated.

A message from Robert.

*I have a preliminary concern. The trust appears to have been transferred twice. One transfer occurred shortly before Henry died. I need to check whether the beneficiary's rights were preserved.*

I showed Eleanor.

She looked frightened.

"Could Marcus get the money?""

"Not unless something gives him a legal claim.""

She lowered her eyes.

"David, there's something else.""

I turned.

"What?""

"Marcus contacted me last month.""

I felt my shoulders stiffen.

"When?""

"Before he contacted Madison.""

"What did he want?""

"He asked about Henry's estate.""

I stared at her.

"Why?""

"He said he knew Henry had left money for Madison. He wanted to know whether the trust still existed.""

My stomach tightened.

"Did you tell him?""

"I said I didn't know.""

"Did he believe you?""

Eleanor shook her head.

"He told me he had documents proving Henry had promised him something.""

I sat down.

"What documents?""

"I don't know. He wouldn't show me.""

Then Eleanor reached into her pocket and removed her phone.

"I saved the messages.""

She opened a conversation.

Marcus had sent several messages over a period of weeks.

The first was ordinary.

Hope you're doing well. I need to discuss something regarding Henry.

The second was more direct.

I know about the trust. I know Richard funded it.

The third made me sit upright.

If Madison finds out who has been controlling that money, she'll never forgive you.

I read the final message.

You should tell her before I do.

I looked at Eleanor.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

She began crying.

"Because I thought I could resolve it without hurting Madison.""

I shook my head.

"That's what Henry thought too.""

She lowered her face.

I didn't know what to say.

Then my phone rang.

Robert.

"David, I've found something.""

"What?""

"The original trust agreement names Richard as the grantor and Madison as the sole beneficiary. Henry was appointed temporary administrator, not permanent owner.""

I closed my eyes.

"Meaning?""

"Meaning he may not have had authority to transfer the assets into his holding company.""

I looked at the statement.

"And the money?""

"Some of it is still there. But a substantial portion was moved into another account.""

"Whose?""

Robert hesitated.

"That's the problem.""

He sent me a document.

I opened it.

The account had been established under a business entity connected to Reed Family Events.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Marcus.

The same company he had been trying to revive with my $25,000 guarantee.

I looked at Eleanor.

"Marcus has been trying to get access to Madison's trust.""

She covered her mouth.

Robert continued.

"There's also an authorization document dated three months ago. It appears someone submitted a request to change the trust's administrative contact.""

"Who?""

Robert paused.

"Madison.""

I stared at the screen.

"Are you sure?""

"Her name and signature are on the request.""

I looked toward the staircase.

Madison had been contacting Marcus for three months.

The same three months during which she had become increasingly distant from me.

I couldn't understand why she would have signed something like that.

Then Robert added:

"David, I think she may have been told she was simply updating her beneficiary information. The document actually gives Marcus access to certain account records.""

I stood.

"Can you stop it?""

"I'm working on it.""

I ended the call.

At that exact moment, Madison appeared at the top of the stairs.

She had changed into pajamas.

Her eyes were swollen.

"Dad?""

I looked up.

"Yes?""

She came downstairs slowly.

"I need to tell you something.""

Eleanor stood.

"Sweetheart, not now.""

Madison shook her head.

"No. I need to say it.""

She stopped in front of me.

"Marcus asked me to sign some documents a few weeks ago.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"What documents?""

"He said they were about the money Grandpa left me.""

Eleanor sat down.

Madison continued.

"He said I had a trust. He told me you and Mom had known about it all along.""

I stared at her.

"What did you sign?""

"Something that gave him permission to speak with the bank.""

I closed my eyes.

"Madison...""

"I know.""

She began crying.

"I thought he was helping me get what was mine.""

I reached for her hand.

She let me hold it.

Then she said something I hadn't expected.

"There's another thing.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

"Marcus told me that if I didn't cooperate, he would show me a document proving you were never supposed to adopt me.""

The room went silent.

I looked at Eleanor.

She seemed just as shocked.

Madison reached into her pocket and pulled out a folded photocopy.

She handed it to me.

At the top was Henry's signature.

The document was titled:

*CONDITIONAL ADOPTION AGREEMENT.*

And beneath the heading was a clause stating that my adoption of Madison would be valid only if I agreed to a financial condition.

I read the sentence.

Then I read it again.

My name was written beneath the condition.

And the final line said:

In the event of noncompliance, the adoption may be challenged by the original parties.

Madison looked at me.

"Did you agree to this?""

I couldn't answer immediately.

May you like

Because the signature beneath the clause looked exactly like mine.

But I had never seen the document before.
