Chapter 3: The Last Thing Lily Heard

Nobody moved.

Not even the clock seemed to make a sound.

Marcus stared at Vanessa as though the woman standing in front of him had suddenly become a stranger.

"You told her what?""

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Emily stepped forward.

"Say it again.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I was upset. I wasn't thinking.""

"Say it!""

"I told her Marcus didn't want to talk!""

Emily's hand flew to her chest.

For a moment, she looked as if she might collapse.

Officer Reynolds caught her elbow and helped her sit down.

Marcus couldn't breathe.

He looked at the photograph on the table.

Lily's smile seemed impossibly bright.

"What exactly did you say to my daughter?""

Vanessa began shaking her head.

"Marcus, please...""

"WHAT DID YOU SAY?""

Officer Reynolds stepped between them.

"Mr. Hale, I understand you're upset, but I need you to let her speak.""

Vanessa wiped her face.

"She called me at 8:16. I answered because I thought it was Emily.""

"And?""

"She said she wanted her daddy.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

Vanessa continued.

"She sounded tired. She kept coughing. I asked her why she was calling me.""

Emily's voice trembled.

"She was seven years old.""

Vanessa looked at her.

"I know.""

"No. You don't.""

Emily's eyes filled again.

"You don't know what it feels like to watch your child get weaker while she keeps asking for someone who won't answer.""

Vanessa looked down.

"I told Lily that Marcus was busy.""

Marcus swallowed.

"And then?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"I told her he didn't want to talk to her right now.""

Marcus stepped backward.

"Why would you say that?""

"Because I was jealous!""

The confession burst out of her.

She covered her mouth immediately.

Emily stared at her.

Vanessa continued, her voice rising.

"Every time Marcus talked about Lily, everything changed. He would cancel our plans. He would leave dinner early.

He would send money to Emily. He would spend entire weekends with them.""

"She's his daughter!"" Emily shouted.

"I KNOW!""

Vanessa's scream echoed through the room.

Then she fell silent.

She looked at Marcus.

"I thought if I could make the calls stop, he would finally choose us.""

Marcus stared at her.

"Us?""

"You and me.""

He laughed once.

It wasn't amusement.

It was disbelief.

"You made a seven-year-old believe her father didn't love her so you could have me to yourself?""

Vanessa began crying harder.

"I didn't know she was going to die.""

Marcus looked at her.

"Would it have been acceptable if she hadn't?""

She had no answer.

Officer Reynolds took a small notebook from her pocket.

"Miss Cole, I need you to explain exactly what happened after that call.""

Vanessa wiped her nose.

"I ended the call.""

"Did Lily say anything else?""

Vanessa nodded slowly.

"She asked me to tell Marcus something.""

"What?""

Vanessa looked at the photograph.

"She said she was sorry.""

Marcus's face crumpled.

"Sorry for what?""

Vanessa whispered:

"For calling too much.""

Emily made a sound that was almost a sob.

Marcus turned away.

He walked toward the window, pressing his forehead against the cold glass.

Outside, the streetlights illuminated the wet pavement.

He could see his reflection.

A man in a beige jacket.

A man with an expensive watch.

A man who had built a successful business, bought a beautiful house, and convinced himself that happiness meant leaving every uncomfortable part of his past behind.

And somewhere in the middle of all that, he had forgotten the little girl who used to run toward him every time he opened the front door.

"Officer," he said without turning around, "I want to hear that voicemail.""

Officer Reynolds nodded.

"We're working to recover it.""

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

"You can't.""

Marcus turned.

"Why?""

"Because I deleted it.""

Officer Reynolds looked at her.

"How?""

Vanessa's eyes dropped.

"I used the account.""

"Did you delete it from the hospital device?""

"Yes.""

"Did you delete the original recording?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"I thought I did.""

Officer Reynolds leaned forward.

"What does that mean?""

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

"I downloaded it first.""

Marcus stepped closer.

"You kept it?""

"I wanted to make sure nobody could use it against me.""

Emily stared at her.

"You kept my daughter's last message as insurance?""

Vanessa began crying again.

"I was scared.""

Marcus shook his head.

"Where is it?""

Vanessa looked at him.

"On my laptop.""

Officer Reynolds immediately asked for the device.

Vanessa gave her a password.

The officer made a call, then explained that the recording would need to be preserved and reviewed as part of the investigation.

While they waited, Marcus sat beside Emily.

For the first time that evening, she didn't move away.

He looked at her hands.

There was a small scar across her left thumb.

He remembered how she had gotten it.

Lily had been three, and they'd spent an entire Saturday making a wooden birdhouse. Emily had cut her finger while helping Lily hold a piece of sandpaper.

They had laughed about it.

Back then, the three of them had been a family.

"Why didn't you come to the hospital?"" Emily asked.

Marcus looked down.

"I didn't know.""

"You didn't know because you never answered.""

"I know.""

"No, Marcus. You don't.""

She turned toward him.

"Do you know what I had to do when Lily asked for you?""

He shook his head.

"I had to sit beside her bed and pretend I was reading your messages. I had to tell her you were probably driving. Then I had to tell her you were probably sleeping. And finally, when she stopped asking, I had to pretend that was somehow better.""

Marcus covered his face.

"I am so sorry.""

Emily stared at him.

"Sorry won't give her another birthday.""

"I know.""

"Sorry won't let her grow up.""

"I know.""

"Then don't ask me to forgive you tonight.""

He nodded.

"I won't.""

A few minutes later, Officer Reynolds returned with a small laptop.

"The recording appears to be intact.""

Marcus stood immediately.

"Can I hear it?""

The officer considered him.

"Yes, but I want you to understand that this may be difficult.""

Marcus nodded.

"I'm her father.""

Officer Reynolds opened the file.

A small audio player appeared on the screen.

She pressed play.

For a moment, there was only static.

Then a tiny voice filled the room.

"Hi, Daddy.""

Marcus stopped breathing.

It was Lily.

Her voice was weak, but unmistakable.

"Mommy says you're busy. That's okay.""

A faint cough interrupted the recording.

"I wanted to tell you something.""

Marcus gripped the back of the sofa.

"I made you a picture. It's a house with three people. Me and Mommy and you.""

There was a pause.

Then Lily giggled softly.

"I made your head too big.""

Emily covered her mouth.

Marcus was crying now.

Lily continued.

"When you come back, can we have pancakes? The chocolate ones?""

Another pause.

"Daddy, I'm not mad. I know grown-ups have things to do.""

The recording crackled.

Then came the sentence that shattered him.

"Please don't be mad at me for calling.""

Marcus fell to his knees.

"No, baby. No.""

The recording continued.

"I love you, Daddy. Even if you don't want to talk right now.""

Then a faint voice in the background said something.

A woman's voice.

Not Emily's.

Officer Reynolds immediately stopped the recording.

Marcus lifted his head.

"Play that again.""

The officer rewound it.

The background voice was clearer this time.

A woman said:

"Hang up, Lily. He doesn't want to hear this.""

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She had gone completely still.

Emily stared at her.

"That's your voice.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"No.""

Officer Reynolds replayed the final seconds.

The voice came again.

"Hang up, Lily. He doesn't want to hear this.""

Marcus slowly stood.

"You were there?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

"You were in the hospital?""

Her lips trembled.

"No. I wasn't physically there.""

"Then how did your voice get into the recording?""

Vanessa looked toward the door.

Officer Reynolds noticed.

"Miss Cole, stay where you are.""

Vanessa began shaking.

"I called her back.""

Marcus's expression hardened.

"When?""

"After the first call.""

Emily stood.

"Why?""

Vanessa looked at the floor.

"Because I wanted to make sure she wouldn't call again.""

The room went silent.

Officer Reynolds moved closer.

"Did you call the hospital?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did you speak directly to Lily?""

"Yes.""

"What did you tell her?""

Vanessa wiped her face.

"I told her Marcus was angry.""

Marcus stepped toward her.

"Why?""

"Because she kept asking for him.""

"And?""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"I told her that if she loved her father, she needed to stop making things difficult for him.""

Emily began crying again.

Marcus felt something inside him break.

"She was a child.""

"I know.""

"She was dying.""

"I KNOW!""

Vanessa sank into a chair.

"I didn't know it was that serious. I thought it was another fever. Emily had told me Lily got sick sometimes.""

Emily stared at her.

"I told you because you asked whether Lily would be joining us for dinner.""

Vanessa said nothing.

Officer Reynolds wrote something in her notebook.

Then she asked:

"Miss Cole, who else knew you had contacted Lily?""

Vanessa looked up.

"No one.""

"Are you certain?""

"Yes.""

Officer Reynolds glanced at Marcus.

"There's something else in the digital report.""

She opened another page.

"The account used to send the message at 7:42 p.m. was accessed through a laptop registered to your household. The same laptop was used to download the voicemail.""

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

"Your laptop?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

"Then this isn't some misunderstanding.""

Vanessa's face crumpled.

"I didn't mean for her to die.""

Officer Reynolds closed the laptop.

"That's something the investigation will establish.""

She then turned toward Marcus.

"Mr. Hale, we need your original phone and the laptop. We also need to establish whether anyone else had access to those devices.""

Marcus nodded.

"Take everything.""

Vanessa suddenly stood.

"Marcus, please. Don't let them do this.""

He looked at her.

"Do what?""

"Destroy my life.""

Marcus stared at her for a long moment.

Then he glanced at Lily's photograph.

"She was seven, Vanessa.""

Vanessa's mouth opened.

He continued.

"She had a whole life ahead of her. And you were worried about losing a man who was supposed to love her.""

Vanessa began sobbing.

Marcus turned away.

Officer Reynolds escorted her toward the hallway while another officer waited outside.

But before Vanessa reached the door, Emily spoke.

"Wait.""

Everyone stopped.

Emily walked toward the side table.

She picked up the pink birthday card Lily had made.

Then she held it out to Vanessa.

"Take it.""

Vanessa looked confused.

"Why?""

"Because Lily made it for you. She wanted you to like her so badly.""

Vanessa stared at the glitter-covered paper.

Emily's voice trembled.

"I don't want to keep anything that reminds me how much my daughter begged for love from people who refused to give it to her.""

Vanessa took the card.

For the first time, she seemed unable to look at anyone.

The officers led her out.

The front door closed.

Marcus stood motionless.

Then his phone vibrated.

He looked down.

An unknown number had sent him a message.

*Mr. Hale, this is Dr. Bennett from St.

Mary's Hospital. I have been trying to reach you regarding Lily's final night. There is something I need to tell you in person.*

A second message arrived.

It concerns the person who signed the consent form before Lily passed away.

Marcus stared at the screen.

He looked at Emily.

"Did you sign Lily's hospital paperwork?""

Emily frowned.

"Of course. I was her mother.""

Marcus turned the phone toward her.

She read the message.

Then she slowly shook her head.

"Marcus...""

"What?""

Emily's voice dropped to a whisper.

"I wasn't the only person who signed.""

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

"Who else?""

Emily looked toward the closed front door.

And whispered a name he never expected to hear.

May you like

"Your mother.""
