Chapter 9: The Photograph That Changed Everything

Marcus couldn't take his eyes off Emily.

"You were at the restaurant?""

Emily nodded.

"Yes.""

"You took that photograph?""

"No.""

"But the reflection—"

"That isn't me.""

Officer Reynolds enlarged the image again.

The woman in the reflection wore a silver bracelet with a small circular charm.

Emily slowly pulled up the sleeve of her cardigan.

Her wrist was bare.

Then she shook her head.

"Patricia gave me that bracelet years ago. I returned it after our divorce.""

Marcus frowned.

"Then who was wearing it?""

Emily looked at the photograph.

"Vanessa.""

Officer Reynolds studied the reflection.

The woman had dark hair and a similar build to Vanessa.

Marcus felt a chill.

"So Vanessa was following us?""

Emily nodded.

"She knew I was trying to contact you.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I didn't know how much she knew. I was afraid she would find out I had discovered the transfers.""

Marcus looked confused.

"You knew about the money?""

Emily reached into her handbag.

She removed a small folded document.

"I found this in Lily's backpack three weeks before she died.""

Marcus stared.

"Why didn't you show me?""

"I tried.""

She opened her phone and showed him a message dated September twenty-eighth.

Marcus, I need to talk to you about Lily's education fund. Something isn't right.

Below it was another message.

Please call me. This is important.

Marcus remembered seeing the notification.

He had been in a meeting.

He had swiped it away.

Emily looked at him.

"You never called.""

He lowered his head.

She continued.

"I found the first missing transfer while helping Lily organize her school paperwork. I didn't understand where the money had gone, so I contacted your mother.""

Marcus stared.

"You contacted Patricia?""

"Yes. She told me the account was being restructured.""

"And you believed her?""

"At first.""

Emily opened the folded document.

It was a copy of a financial statement.

The same account number appeared on the records Daniel had shown them.

"But then I found something else.""

She pointed to a handwritten note.

Northbridge Consulting — final transfer authorization.

At the bottom was a signature.

Vanessa Cole.

Emily continued.

"I contacted Daniel. He admitted there were irregularities, but he refused to give me the records.""

Marcus shook his head.

"So you went to the restaurant.""

"I knew Vanessa was meeting you there. I wanted to show you the documents before she had a chance to convince you otherwise.""

"Why didn't you come inside?""

"Because your mother was there.""

Marcus looked up.

"What?""

Emily nodded.

"Patricia was sitting at another table. I saw her talking to Vanessa.""

Officer Reynolds immediately leaned forward.

"Did you hear their conversation?""

"Only part of it.""

"What did they say?""

Emily swallowed.

"Patricia said that Lily had found the paperwork and that they needed to deal with it before you returned from your trip.""

Marcus felt sick.

"Deal with it?""

"I don't know what she meant.""

Officer Reynolds made a note.

"Did you take a photograph?""

"No. I was trying to record their conversation, but Vanessa noticed me.""

Emily opened her phone.

There was a short audio file.

"I saved this.""

Marcus stared.

"Why didn't you give it to the police?""

"I was afraid. I didn't know whether Patricia had people at the company who could interfere with the investigation.""

Officer Reynolds took the phone.

"We'll preserve this.""

She played the recording.

At first, there was background noise.

Then Patricia's voice became clear.

"She cannot tell Marcus.""

Vanessa replied:

"She's already asking questions.""

Patricia answered:

"Then make sure she understands the consequences.""

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"And if she doesn't?""

There was a pause.

Patricia responded:

"Then we make sure Marcus believes Emily is the problem.""

The recording ended.

Marcus stared at the phone.

"That was before Lily died?""

Emily nodded.

"Three days before.""

Officer Reynolds looked serious.

"Do you have the original recording?""

"Yes.""

"Please don't edit or delete it. We'll take a forensic copy.""

Marcus looked at Emily.

"You were trying to warn me.""

She nodded.

"And I failed.""

He sat down.

For the first time that evening, he realized how much of the truth had been hidden from him.

Emily had been calling because she needed help.

Lily had been calling because she needed her father.

Andrew had been calling because he was trying to protect her.

And Marcus had ignored every one of them.

His mother had made sure he never heard their voices.

But he had made it easy for her.

Officer Reynolds's phone rang.

She listened for several seconds.

Then she stood.

"Understood. We'll be there.""

Marcus looked up.

"What happened?""

"We've located Patricia.""

"Where?""

"At a private residence outside the city. She's agreed to speak with investigators.""

Marcus stood.

"I'm coming.""

Officer Reynolds hesitated.

"You may be asked to provide another statement, but I don't recommend confronting her alone.""

"I don't care.""

Emily touched his arm.

"Marcus, we need answers. Not another argument.""

He nodded.

They followed the officers to the station.

Patricia was waiting in an interview room.

She wore a cream-colored coat and carried the same black handbag Marcus remembered from childhood.

When she saw him, she smiled.

"Darling.""

Marcus remained standing.

"Don't.""

Her smile disappeared.

"You're behaving like a stranger.""

"You treated my daughter like a stranger.""

Patricia sat down.

"I loved Lily.""

Marcus laughed bitterly.

"You told her I didn't want to speak to her.""

"I was trying to prevent unnecessary emotional distress.""

"She was seven!""

"She was confused.""

"She was dying!""

Patricia's face tightened.

"Nobody knew she would die.""

Marcus leaned forward.

"She asked you to call me.""

Patricia looked away.

"Yes.""

"And you didn't.""

"I thought you were better off not being dragged into Emily's drama.""

Marcus stared at her.

"She was your granddaughter.""

Patricia folded her hands.

"I know.""

"Then why?""

For a moment, the room was silent.

Then Patricia sighed.

"Because I was trying to protect the family.""

Marcus shook his head.

"What family?""

"Our family.""

He placed the printed email on the table.

The subject line was clearly visible.

LILY KNOWS ABOUT THE SECOND ACCOUNT.

Patricia looked at it.

Her expression changed.

"Where did you get that?""

"Does it matter?""

"That email was private.""

"Did you steal from Lily?""

Patricia straightened.

"I managed her finances.""

"You transferred $320,000 into an account controlled by Vanessa.""

"It was an investment.""

"An investment?""

"Your business was struggling. I was trying to protect your assets.""

Marcus stared at her.

"By taking money from a seven-year-old?""

Patricia's voice hardened.

"That money would have been worthless if the company collapsed.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

"Because you were emotionally compromised.""

Marcus looked at Emily.

Then back at his mother.

"You mean I loved my daughter.""

Patricia said nothing.

Officer Reynolds entered the room.

"Mrs. Hale, we're going to ask you some questions about the financial transfers and the communications with Lily.""

Patricia looked at her.

"I've already explained everything.""

"Then answering a few more questions shouldn't be difficult.""

Patricia's expression changed.

Officer Reynolds placed several documents on the table.

"These records show that you accessed Lily's account on October fourteenth.""

Patricia shook her head.

"I don't recall.""

"These messages show you communicating with Vanessa.""

"I don't remember sending those.""

"And this recording contains your voice discussing the possibility of preventing Lily from contacting her father.""

Patricia's eyes narrowed.

"That recording was taken without my permission.""

Officer Reynolds remained calm.

"That doesn't change what it contains.""

Patricia turned toward Marcus.

"You're allowing these people to destroy your own mother.""

Marcus stared at her.

"No, Mom. I'm finally allowing someone to investigate what you did.""

Her eyes filled.

Then she leaned forward.

"You don't understand. Vanessa was the one who sent the message.""

Marcus froze.

"Which message?""

"The one telling Lily not to call you.""

"Did you know about it?""

Patricia looked down.

"I knew afterward.""

"Afterward?""

"Vanessa said she was trying to protect you.""

Marcus shook his head.

"Did you help her delete the voicemail?""

Patricia said nothing.

Officer Reynolds leaned forward.

"Mrs. Hale, did you have access to Vanessa's device?""

Patricia slowly nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did you delete any recordings?""

Her expression changed.

"I deleted one.""

Marcus felt his heart pound.

"Which one?""

Patricia looked at him.

"The second voicemail.""

The room went silent.

Marcus stood.

"There's another voicemail?""

Patricia nodded.

"Yes.""

"Where is it?""

She looked toward Officer Reynolds.

"I don't have it anymore.""

"Who does?""

Patricia hesitated.

Then she whispered:

"Vanessa.""

Marcus felt his stomach turn.

"Why would she keep it?""

Patricia closed her eyes.

"Because she was afraid Lily had said something that could expose everything.""

Officer Reynolds immediately contacted the investigative team.

But Marcus wasn't finished.

"What did Lily say in that voicemail?""

Patricia looked at him.

For the first time, she seemed genuinely afraid.

"She said she knew who had been taking the money.""

Marcus stepped closer.

"Who?""

Patricia's lips trembled.

"She said she saw Vanessa copying your signature.""

Marcus stared.

"Copying my signature?""

Patricia nodded.

"On the documents that transferred the money.""

Officer Reynolds wrote something down.

Then Patricia added:

"But that wasn't the only thing Lily saw.""

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

"What else?""

His mother looked directly at him.

"She saw Vanessa put something in your suitcase.""

Marcus froze.

"What?""

Patricia swallowed.

"Something that could have made you look responsible for the missing money.""

Marcus remembered the suitcase he had brought into Emily's house.

The beige jacket.

The blue polo.

The trip he had taken.

He suddenly understood why Vanessa had looked so terrified when Officer Reynolds showed him the message.

But there was still something missing.

"Where is the second voicemail?""

Patricia looked at him.

"Vanessa sent it to someone.""

"Who?""

Patricia's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Daniel.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

Daniel had been involved in the financial transfers.

Vanessa had the voicemail.

Patricia had deleted one copy.

And Lily's final attempt to warn her father was still missing.

Officer Reynolds's phone rang again.

She listened.

Then her face changed.

"Mr. Hale, we just received a message from the digital forensics team.""

"What?""

"They recovered a deleted audio file from Vanessa's laptop.""

Marcus leaned forward.

"Is it Lily's voicemail?""

Officer Reynolds nodded.

"Yes.""

She looked at him.

"But there's something unusual.""

"What?""

"The file was forwarded to an email address registered to you.""

Marcus stared.

"When?""

"October fifteenth. The morning after Lily died.""

His stomach tightened.

"I never received it.""

Officer Reynolds turned her phone around.

The email address was his.

But the forwarding destination was different.

Someone had added a second recovery address.

The name attached to it was:

*PATRICIA HALE.*

Marcus looked at his mother.

She slowly lowered her head.

Then his phone vibrated.

An email notification appeared.

The subject line read:

*LILY'S LAST MESSAGE — ORIGINAL COPY RECOVERED.*

And beneath it was a message from an address he didn't recognize.

May you like

Mr. Hale, before you listen to this recording, you need to know that your daughter was trying to tell you something about the night she died.

The person who sent her that final message was not acting alone.
