Chapter 5: The Man Who Knew Too Much

Curtis answered the call.

“What did Michelle promise you?”” he asked.

There was a pause on the other end.

Darren's voice came through low and cautious.

“I'm guessing she hasn't told you everything.””

“Then start talking.””

“Look, man, I don't want trouble between you and Michelle.””

“Then you shouldn't have accepted money from my household without my knowledge.””

“I didn't know it was your money.””

“It's our joint account. You're telling me you thought Michelle had three thousand dollars sitting around, and you never asked where it came from?””

Darren sighed.

“I knew she had access to the account. She told me you were okay with helping Bryson.””

Curtis closed his eyes briefly.

There it was.

Another lie.

“What exactly did she tell you?””

“That you wanted Bryson to have a relationship with me. That you were willing to help me get back on my feet so I could spend more time with him.””

Curtis gripped the phone.

“I have never offered to finance your life.””

“I'm not saying you did.””

“Then don't put words in my mouth.””

“I'm telling you what she said.””

Curtis walked to the kitchen and lowered his voice.

“Did she ask you to keep the money a secret?””

Darren didn't answer immediately.

That silence told Curtis more than a quick denial would have.

“Yes,” Darren finally admitted.

“She said you wouldn't understand.””

Curtis looked toward the staircase.

“And you agreed?””

“I didn't think it was a big deal at first. She said she'd explain later.””

“How much did you receive?””

“Three thousand dollars, altogether.””

“Then why did you text me about the rest?””

“Because there was supposed to be another payment.””

Curtis felt his stomach tighten.

“What payment?””

“Michelle said she was going to transfer another five thousand dollars.””

Curtis stopped walking.

“Five thousand?””

“That's what she told me.””

“When?””

“Last week.””

Curtis looked at his phone, then at the kitchen clock.

It was nearly nine.

“Why would she promise you five thousand dollars?””

Darren exhaled.

“Because she said she was going to sell something.””

“What?””

“I don't know. She wouldn't tell me exactly.””

Curtis's mind raced through the possibilities.

Their second car was in both their names. The house was his before the marriage, though Michelle had contributed to some renovations. There were savings accounts, insurance policies, and retirement funds.

He needed to know whether Michelle had accessed anything beyond the joint account.

“Darren, listen carefully. I have not authorized any additional payment to you. If Michelle promised you money, that was her decision. Do not attempt to access any of my accounts, and do not accept any further transfers without verifying where the money came from.””

“I don't want your money, man.””

“Then return what you received.””

“I can return it in installments.””

“No. You will return it as soon as you can. And you'll send me a written record of what you received and when.””

Darren was quiet.

Then he said something Curtis hadn't expected.

“There's another reason I'm calling.””

Curtis waited.

“Michelle said she was going to leave you.””

The kitchen seemed to grow colder.

“What?””

“She told me things weren't working out. She said you were becoming controlling, that you were making it impossible for her to raise Bryson, and that she was planning to move out.””

Curtis gripped the counter.

“When did she tell you that?””

“And what did you say?””

“I told her she needed to think about Bryson before making a decision. I wasn't trying to get involved in your marriage.””

“But you accepted money from her.””

“That's why I'm calling. I realized I might have been dragged into something I shouldn't have been part of.””

Curtis stared at the dark window above the sink.

He could see his own reflection.

A tired man in a work shirt, standing in a house he had believed was safe.

“Did she say where she was going?””

“No. She said she was figuring things out.””

“Did she mention taking Bryson?””

“Yes.””

Curtis's jaw tightened.

“Did she mention Elijah?””

Darren hesitated.

“No.””

That single word hurt more than Curtis expected.

Michelle had discussed leaving him, taking her son, and arranging money for a new life.

But apparently, she hadn't considered Elijah important enough to mention.

“Send me the records,” Curtis said.

“I will.””

“And Darren?””

“Yeah?””

“Whatever problems you have with Michelle, Bryson doesn't deserve to be caught in the middle. Don't involve him in this conversation.””

“I agree.””

Curtis ended the call.

For a long time, he stood alone in the kitchen.

He wanted to believe that Darren was exaggerating. Perhaps he had misunderstood. Perhaps Michelle had made careless promises in a moment of frustration and never intended to act on them.

But the evidence was growing.

The money.

The secret account.

The unexplained purchases.

The conversation about moving funds.

And now, the possibility that Michelle had been planning to leave.

Curtis opened his banking app again and began reviewing the transactions.

He checked their joint account first.

Then he checked his personal savings.

The balance was lower than he remembered.

He scrolled through the activity until he found a transfer from two weeks earlier.

Two thousand dollars.

The destination was a savings account linked to his profile, but the account number didn't match the one he used for emergencies.

He had never opened it.

He tapped the details.

The account had been created six months earlier.

The contact information listed a phone number he recognized immediately.

Michelle's.

Curtis felt his pulse quicken.

He called the bank again.

This time, he asked to speak with someone about account security.

The representative explained that the account had been opened online using information associated with his existing banking profile. Because the account had been linked to a joint household login, the bank would need to review the authorization history before confirming who had initiated the setup.

Curtis requested that the bank secure his accounts and explain the available steps for disputing any transfers he hadn't authorized.

He didn't accuse Michelle of a crime.

He didn't speculate.

He simply asked the bank to document what had happened and prevent further unauthorized activity while they investigated.

By the time he finished, it was nearly ten.

He went upstairs.

Michelle was sitting on the bed, staring at her phone.

The shopping bags were gone from the floor. The new clothes had been placed inside the closet, their tags still attached.

She looked up when Curtis entered.

“Who were you talking to?””

“Darren.””

Her face drained of color.

“You called him?””

“He called me.””

“What did he say?””

“That depends. What did you promise him?””

Michelle stood.

“Curtis, you had no right to involve him.””

“He involved himself when he accepted money from our account.””

“He needed help!””

“And you promised him another five thousand dollars.””

She stared at him.

Then she shook her head.

“He misunderstood.””

“Did he?””

“Yes.””

“Then tell me what you actually promised.””

Michelle walked to the dresser and picked up a hairbrush.

“I can't believe you're doing this.””

“Doing what?””

“Interrogating me like I'm some criminal.””

Curtis's voice remained controlled.

“I found an account I didn't know existed. I found transfers I didn't authorize. Darren told me you were planning to leave and had promised him more money. I'm asking you to explain.””

Michelle set the brush down.

“You're making everything sound terrible.””

“Is it not terrible?””

“I was trying to protect Bryson.””

“From what?””

“From being trapped in a house where his mother is constantly treated like a second-class citizen!””

Curtis stared at her.

“Is that why you planned to leave?””

She said nothing.

“Michelle, answer me.””

She folded her arms.

“I was thinking about it.””

“For how long?””

“A few weeks.””

“And the money?””

“I needed a place to go.””

Curtis felt the last fragile piece of hope inside him begin to collapse.

“You were taking money from our household to prepare to leave me?””

“I was making sure Bryson and I would be okay!””

“And Elijah?””

Michelle's expression tightened.

“What about him?””

“He lives here. He is a child in this family. Did you ever think about how your decisions would affect him?””

“Why should I have to plan my life around your son?””

Curtis looked at her for a long moment.

“Because you chose to marry his father.””

Michelle turned away.

“I knew you would say that.””

“Then why did you marry me?””

She spun around.

“Because I loved you!””

“Do you still?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Of course I do.””

“Then why were you preparing to leave without telling me?””

“Because I knew you wouldn't let me go without making it difficult.””

Curtis shook his head.

“I can't stop you from leaving. If you want to end this marriage, that's your choice. But you cannot secretly move money, make promises on my behalf, and expect me to pretend nothing happened.””

Michelle sank onto the bed.

“I didn't know how to tell you.””

“You could have started by telling the truth.””

She covered her face.

For several seconds, Curtis said nothing.

He was tired of arguing. Tired of trying to separate what Michelle said from what she actually did.

He went to the closet, took out a pillow, and carried it toward the bedroom door.

“Where are you going?”” she asked.

“To sleep in the guest room.””

“Curtis, please don't.””

He stopped.

“I need space.””

“Are you going to throw me out?””

“I'm not making any more decisions tonight.””

She rose and followed him into the hallway.

“Then promise me you'll hear me out tomorrow.””

“I've been hearing you out all evening.””

“No. Promise me you'll give me a chance to fix this.””

Curtis looked at her.

“If you want to fix this, you can start by being completely honest.””

She nodded quickly.

“I will.””

He continued toward the guest room.

Behind him, Michelle stood in the hallway with tears streaming down her face.

Curtis closed the door.

He placed the pillow on the bed and sat down.

For the first time that evening, he allowed himself to think about what might happen if the marriage ended.

He thought about the house, the wedding photographs, the plans they had made for holidays and birthdays.

He thought about Bryson, who hadn't asked for any of this.

And he thought about Elijah, who had gone to sleep believing his father's marriage might collapse because he had asked for a shirt.

Curtis knew he couldn't allow that belief to take root.

Whatever happened between the adults, his son needed to know that he was loved.

A soft knock came at the door.

“Dad?””

Curtis stood immediately and opened it.

Elijah stood in the hallway holding a small pillow against his chest.

“What is it, buddy?””

“Can I sleep in here tonight?””

Curtis crouched.

“Did you have a bad dream?””

Elijah shook his head.

“I just don't want to be alone.””

Curtis opened the door wider.

“Come on in.””

Elijah climbed into the bed and settled against the wall.

Curtis pulled the blanket over him.

“Everything is going to be okay,” he whispered.

Elijah looked up.

“Even if Michelle leaves?””

Curtis paused.

“I can't promise what Michelle will decide. But I can promise you that I'm not going anywhere.””

Elijah nodded.

Within minutes, his breathing grew slow and even.

Curtis remained awake, staring at the ceiling.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message from Darren had arrived.

It contained screenshots of their conversations.

Curtis opened the first image.

Michelle had written:

*Once I get the money together, Bryson and I can finally start over. Curtis doesn't need to know until everything is ready.*

The next screenshot was dated a week later.

*I'm tired of living in a house where everything has to be shared with Elijah. I want Bryson to have a home where he comes first.*

Curtis felt his throat tighten.

He opened the final screenshot.

Michelle's message was short.

*If Curtis finds out about the money, I'll tell him he forced me to leave. He'll look like the bad guy, and nobody will question why I took Bryson.*

Curtis lowered the phone.

For several seconds, he couldn't move.

Then he heard footsteps outside the guest room.

The doorknob turned.

Michelle opened the door and stepped inside.

She looked at Curtis, then at Elijah sleeping beside him.

Her eyes fell to the phone in Curtis's hand.

And when she saw the screenshots on the screen, she stopped dead.

“Where did you get those?”” she whispered.

Curtis lifted his gaze.

“From the man you trusted more than your own husband.””

Michelle's lips trembled.

May you like

Then she said something that made Curtis realize the secret account wasn't the only thing she had been hiding.

“Curtis, there's something else you need to know about Elijah.””
