Chapter 6: The Secret She Planned to Use Against Me

Curtis stood so quickly that the mattress shifted beneath Elijah.

The boy stirred, made a small sound, and turned toward the wall.

Curtis immediately lowered his voice.

“What did you just say?””

Michelle stood beside the door, gripping the fabric of her robe.

“I said there's something else you need to know.””

“About Elijah?””

She nodded.

Curtis looked at his sleeping son, then back at his wife.

“If this is another attempt to blame him for your decisions, stop now.””

“It's not like that.””

“Then tell me what it is.””

Michelle glanced at the phone in his hand.

“You need to understand why I've been so upset.””

Curtis stared at her.

“Nothing you've told me explains the way you treated Elijah.””

“You don't know everything.””

“Then tell me.””

She took a shaky breath.

“Renee contacted me.””

Curtis's expression changed.

“When?””

“Several weeks ago.””

“Why?””

Michelle looked down.

“She wanted to talk about Elijah.””

Curtis felt a familiar tension settle across his shoulders.

Renee had been inconsistent over the past two years. She called when she could, sent birthday gifts when she remembered, and occasionally promised visits that never happened.

Curtis had never stopped Elijah from speaking to her.

He had encouraged every call, even when it left the boy disappointed.

But Renee had not contacted Michelle before.

At least, not that he knew of.

“What did she say?”” Curtis asked.

“She wanted to know how Elijah was doing.””

“That's all?””

Michelle hesitated.

“No.””

Curtis waited.

“She asked whether you were still planning to move.””

Curtis frowned.

“Move where?””

“Out of state. She said she'd heard you might be transferring for work.””

“That's ridiculous. I haven't discussed moving with her.””

“Maybe she misunderstood.””

“Michelle, what else did she say?””

Michelle rubbed her hands together.

“She asked if Elijah was happy here.””

Curtis glanced at his son.

“And what did you tell her?””

“I told her he was fine.””

“Was that before or after you told him to ask her to buy his clothes?””

Michelle flinched.

“Curtis, please.””

“No. Answer me.””

“Before.””

He looked at the phone again.

“Did Renee ask you for money?””

Michelle's eyes lifted.

“Why would you ask that?””

“Because every time I ask a question, you give me half an answer. I'm trying to understand what this has to do with the account.””

She swallowed.

“She said she was having trouble financially.””

Curtis stared at her.

“And?””

“She asked whether you were sending enough money to support Elijah.””

“Did you tell her I was?””

“Yes.””

“Then what happened?””

Michelle looked toward the hallway.

“She said she was thinking about taking him back.””

Curtis went still.

For a moment, the room seemed to tilt.

“Taking him back?””

“She said she wanted him to live with her again.””

Curtis's voice dropped.

“When?””

“She didn't give me a date.””

“And you believed her?””

Michelle shook her head.

“I didn't know what to believe.””

Curtis looked at his son.

Elijah had spent two years learning to live with a mother who was physically distant. He had adjusted to new routines, a new school, and the absence of the parent who had once tucked him into bed every night.

The thought of someone suddenly threatening to uproot him made Curtis's stomach turn.

“What exactly did Renee tell you?”” he asked.

Michelle sat on the edge of the chair.

“She said she missed him. That she had a bigger apartment now. That she wanted to be more involved.””

“Those are reasonable things for a mother to say.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you acting as though it's some terrible secret?””

Michelle pressed her lips together.

“Because she also said she thought Elijah would be better off with her.””

Curtis shook his head.

“Did she give you a reason?””

“She said he needed his mother.””

Curtis looked at her.

“And you used that to justify excluding him?””

“No!””

“Then what does any of this have to do with the clothes?””

Michelle's eyes filled with tears again.

“Because I thought you were going to leave me.””

Curtis frowned.

“What?””

“You were always talking about Elijah's needs. You were always saying we had to make sure he felt secure, that we couldn't let him feel like an outsider. I thought you were preparing to move closer to Renee so she could take him back.””

Curtis stared at her in disbelief.

“You thought I was planning to leave you because I bought my son school clothes?””

“That's not what I said.””

“You just told me you were worried I would move.””

“Because Renee contacted me!””

“And you decided the solution was to secretly move money into another account?””

Michelle covered her face.

“I didn't know what to do.””

Curtis's voice hardened.

“So you planned to leave first?””

She lowered her hands.

“I needed to protect Bryson.””

“From what?””

“From losing the only stable home he has!””

Curtis looked at her for a long moment.

“Do you hear yourself?””

Michelle said nothing.

“You're telling me you were afraid Elijah might leave, so you decided to make sure he felt unwelcome. You were afraid I might leave you, so you started preparing to leave me. And you were worried Bryson might lose his home, so you took money from the household without asking.””

He shook his head.

“That's not protection, Michelle. That's fear making decisions for everyone.””

She started crying again.

“I know how it sounds.””

“Then why did you do it?””

“Because I thought if I had enough money set aside, I could leave before you did.””

Curtis stared at her.

“And Darren?””

“He offered to help.””

“By accepting three thousand dollars?””

“He said he'd help me find an apartment.””

“Did you tell him you were planning to take Bryson?””

“Yes.””

“Did you tell him you were going to accuse me of forcing you out?””

Michelle looked away.

Curtis didn't need her to answer.

He had already seen the messages.

He turned toward the door.

“Curtis, wait.””

He stopped.

“I didn't mean what I said about Elijah.””

Curtis slowly looked back.

“Which part?””

Michelle's mouth opened, but no words came out.

“The part about him being Renee's responsibility? The part about never agreeing to treat him like your own? Or the part about wanting Bryson to have a home where he comes first?””

She wiped her cheeks.

“I was angry.””

“You keep using that word.””

“Because it's true!””

“Being angry explains why you raised your voice. It doesn't explain why you made a plan to hurt someone.””

Michelle stepped closer.

“I don't want to hurt Elijah.””

“Then you need to stop treating him like an obstacle.””

She looked at the bed.

Elijah was still asleep, his small hand resting against the blanket.

For the first time that evening, Michelle's expression softened.

“He really does love you,” she whispered.

Curtis followed her gaze.

“Yes. And he deserves to know that the people around him won't use that love against him.””

Michelle looked back at Curtis.

“Are you going to tell Renee about this?””

“Tell her about what?””

“About the money. The argument. Everything.””

“Why would I hide the truth from her?””

“Because she could use it against you.””

Curtis stared at her.

“Is that what you're afraid of?””

Michelle didn't answer.

He continued.

“If Renee wants to discuss Elijah's living arrangements, we'll discuss them through the proper channels. I'm not going to make decisions about my son's future because you're frightened of losing control.””

“Control?”” Michelle repeated.

“You think I want control?””

“I think you've been trying to control what happens next by keeping everyone else in the dark.””

She shook her head.

“You don't understand. If Renee decides to take Elijah, everything changes.””

“Yes, it would.””

“And if you decide to leave me—”

“That's not a decision I've made.””

“But you might.””

Curtis looked at her for several seconds.

“I might,” he admitted.

“Because I don't know whether I can trust you anymore.””

Michelle's face crumpled.

“Please don't say that.””

“I wish I didn't have to.””

She reached for his hand, but he stepped away.

“Tomorrow, I'm going to speak with my attorney about protecting the household finances and understanding my options. I'm also going to contact Renee and find out what she actually said to you.””

Michelle looked frightened.

“You're getting lawyers involved?””

“I'm getting advice. There's a difference.””

“What about our marriage?””

Curtis glanced at Elijah.

“Right now, my priority is making sure my son feels safe.””

“And me?””

He looked at her again.

“You'll have the same opportunity to explain yourself that you've had all evening. But I'm not going to ignore what happened just because you're afraid of the consequences.””

Michelle stood silently.

Then she turned toward the door.

“Where are you going?”” Curtis asked.

“To my room.””

“Michelle.””

She stopped.

“Don't move any more money. Don't make any more promises on my behalf. And don't discuss this with Elijah.””

She looked at him over her shoulder.

“I would never use him.””

Curtis glanced at the phone.

He didn't have to say anything.

Michelle walked out and closed the door.

Curtis sat on the edge of the bed, rubbing his hands over his face.

He had expected a difficult conversation about money.

He hadn't expected to discover that his wife had been planning an escape, that his stepson's father had been drawn into it, or that Renee might be considering changing Elijah's living arrangements.

He needed facts.

Not fear. Not assumptions. Not another argument built on secrets.

He took his phone and sent Renee a message.

*We need to talk about something important. Michelle says you contacted her about Elijah possibly moving in with you. Is that true?*

He stared at the message before sending it.

Then he pressed the button.

A minute passed.

Two.

Three.

Finally, the phone vibrated.

Renee had replied.

*Curtis, I did contact Michelle. But I never told her I was taking Elijah away from you.*

Curtis let out a slow breath.

Another message appeared.

*I asked her whether Elijah was happy because he told me something during our last phone call that worried me.*

Curtis sat upright.

He typed quickly.

*What did he tell you?*

The reply came almost immediately.

*He said he felt like Michelle didn't want him in the house. He said he was afraid to ask you for things because he didn't want to cause problems in your marriage.*

Curtis looked at Elijah, sleeping peacefully beside him.

His son had been carrying that fear alone.

Another message appeared.

*I didn't want to interfere with your marriage, Curtis. I wanted to understand what was happening. Michelle told me everything was fine. She said Elijah was adjusting and that you were all doing well.*

Curtis felt his jaw tighten.

Michelle had known Renee was concerned.

She had known Elijah felt unwelcome.

And instead of addressing the problem, she had assured his mother that everything was fine.

Then Renee sent one final message.

**Curtis, there's something else. After I spoke with Michelle, she called me back. She asked whether I would be willing to take Elijah if you and she separated.

I thought she was asking because she was worried about him. But now I'm wondering why she was asking.**

Curtis stared at the screen.

The question had been asked weeks before the shopping bags appeared.

Before the argument.

Before the secret account.

Before he discovered the messages to Darren.

Michelle hadn't merely been preparing to leave.

She had been asking whether someone else would take Elijah.

Curtis looked down at his sleeping son and felt a wave of anger so fierce that he had to force himself to breathe slowly.

Then his phone rang.

Renee's name appeared on the screen.

He answered quietly.

“Renee?””

Her voice was strained.

“Curtis, I need you to listen to me carefully. I found something in my old messages tonight. Something Michelle sent me after our conversation.””

“What did she send you?””

“I didn't understand it at the time. I thought she was just upset.””

“Renee, what was it?””

There was a brief pause.

Then Renee said, “She sent me a photograph of a document.””

Curtis gripped the phone.

“What document?””

“I don't know why she had it, Curtis. But I recognized your signature.””

His stomach tightened.

“What did it say?””

Renee took a shaky breath.

“It was a temporary guardianship form for Elijah.””

Curtis stopped moving.

“She asked me to sign it,” Renee continued.

“She said it would make things easier if Elijah needed to stay with me for a while.””

Curtis stared at the bedroom wall.

He had never signed any such document.

He had never agreed to send Elijah away.

And if the signature on that form really was his, then someone had used his name without his permission.

But Renee wasn't finished.

May you like

“Curtis,” she whispered, “the document was dated three weeks ago.””

And that meant Michelle had been planning to move Elijah out of the house long before the shopping bags ever arrived.
