Chapter 7: The Marriage That Never Ended

For several seconds, Walter couldn't hear anything.

The room seemed to tilt around him.

He stared at the photograph Daniel had placed on the table.

Margaret stood beside a younger man wearing a dark suit. Her hand rested against his chest, and she was smiling in a way Walter hadn't seen in years.

The man was unmistakably Thomas Henderson.

His older brother.

The brother Walter had buried thirty-six years earlier.

Walter slowly raised his eyes.

“Take that back.””

Daniel didn't move.

“I wish I could.””

“Thomas died before I married Margaret.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then how could he have been her husband?””

Daniel opened his briefcase again and removed a folded document.

“Because Thomas and Margaret were married before his accident.””

Walter looked at the paper.

A marriage certificate.

The date was thirty-seven years earlier.

The signatures were clear.

Thomas Henderson.

Margaret Whitmore.

Walter gripped the edge of the table.

“No.””

Daniel pushed the document toward him.

“Your brother married Margaret in a small ceremony outside the city. They planned to announce it when they returned.””

Walter shook his head.

“Thomas would have told me.””

“He intended to.””

“Then why didn't he?””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“Because he died three days later.””

Walter remembered that week.

The phone call.

The hospital.

The black suit.

The funeral.

He remembered Margaret arriving at the cemetery wearing a simple black dress, crying so hard she could barely stand.

He had comforted her.

He had held her hand.

And six months later, he had married her.

Walter looked at the certificate again.

“Why wasn't the marriage recorded?””

Daniel hesitated.

“It was recorded. But someone filed a request to have the record sealed.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked toward Renee.

She immediately shook her head.

“Don't look at me.””

Daniel continued.

“Margaret handled it.””

Walter sank into his chair.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Dad, are you saying Mom was technically married to Uncle Thomas when she married you?””

Daniel nodded.

“If the marriage was never legally dissolved, yes.””

Walter stared at him.

“Then my marriage to Margaret wasn't valid?””

Daniel took a breath.

“That depends on what happened after Thomas died.””

“What happened?””

Daniel looked at the certificate.

“Thomas's estate attorney told Margaret she needed to resolve the marriage record. She never did.””

Walter rubbed his face.

“Why?””

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Daniel's expression softened.

“Of losing the inheritance Thomas had left her.””

Marcus frowned.

“What inheritance?””

Daniel removed another document.

“The property outside town. The one that became the animal rescue center.””

Sophie stepped forward.

“My grandmother told me that property belonged to Thomas.””

Daniel nodded.

“It did.””

Walter looked between them.

“Then why did everyone say Elizabeth owned it?””

“Because Elizabeth managed the rescue center,” Daniel replied.

“Thomas funded it. Margaret handled the legal paperwork. Elizabeth ran the daily operations.””

Walter looked toward the photographs.

“So my brother, my wife, and Elizabeth were all involved?””

“Yes.””

“And nobody told me?””

Daniel said nothing.

Walter stood abruptly.

“You all let me live in a lie for thirty-five years!””

Lily flinched.

Marcus immediately turned toward her.

“Sweetheart, go upstairs for a little while.””

“But Grandpa—”

“I'll come check on you.””

Lily looked at Walter.

He forced a smile.

“It's okay, darling. Go get your favorite book.””

She slowly walked upstairs.

When her bedroom door closed, Walter turned back.

“Continue.””

Daniel placed both hands on the table.

“After Thomas died, Margaret discovered she was pregnant.””

Walter's face tightened.

“Grace.””

Daniel nodded.

“But there was another problem.””

“What?””

“Thomas wasn't Grace's biological father.””

Walter looked at the birth certificate.

“Daniel was.””

Daniel nodded.

“I was.””

Marcus stared.

“So you were involved with Margaret while she was married to Thomas?””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“Yes.””

Walter took a step toward him.

“You were my best friend.””

“I know.””

“You sat beside me at my brother's funeral.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“You watched me marry his widow.””

Daniel's voice cracked.

“I know, Walter.””

Walter slapped his hand against the table.

“Then why?””

Daniel finally looked up.

“Because I loved Margaret.””

Walter laughed bitterly.

“And you loved Elizabeth too?””

Daniel didn't answer.

The silence was enough.

Sophie looked at her father.

“Is that why you left my mother?””

Daniel turned toward her.

“Elizabeth and I were young. We made mistakes.””

“You made me grow up without a father.””

Daniel looked down.

“I know.””

“You let me believe you were dead for years.””

“I never wanted that.””

“But you allowed it.””

Daniel had no answer.

Renee suddenly spoke.

“Can we stop pretending Daniel is the only person who made mistakes?””

Walter turned toward her.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at Daniel.

“He wasn't the only one who knew about the marriage.””

Daniel's expression changed.

“Renee.””

“No. I'm finished protecting you.””

Marcus stared at his wife.

“What did you do?””

Renee walked toward the table.

“After Margaret died, Daniel contacted me. He told me the original marriage certificate had been hidden in the rescue center's old office.””

Walter frowned.

“Why were you involved?””

“Because I was trying to find the original ownership documents.””

“And?””

Renee swallowed.

“I found more than that.””

She opened her handbag and removed a small envelope.

Inside was a photocopy of a legal document.

It was a death certificate.

Thomas Henderson.

Date of death: thirty-six years earlier.

But beneath the official information was a handwritten note.

Identity confirmed through dental records. No further examination requested.

Marcus looked up.

“Why does that matter?””

Renee pointed to the date.

“Because the death certificate was issued before the body was identified.””

Walter stared.

“What?””

Renee nodded.

“The funeral happened before the final identification.””

Daniel closed his briefcase.

“That's enough.””

Walter stepped toward him.

“No. Explain.””

Daniel looked exhausted.

“Thomas's accident happened on a remote construction site. The vehicle burned. Identification was difficult.””

Walter shook his head.

“I attended his funeral.””

“You attended a closed-casket funeral.””

Walter went pale.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“Are you saying my uncle might not have died?””

Daniel stared at him.

“I am saying the official identification was never as certain as everyone believed.””

Walter's knees weakened.

He grabbed the chair.

“Why would someone pretend Thomas was dead?””

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“Because Thomas had discovered something.””

“What?””

“The original property deed was not in his name anymore.””

Walter frowned.

“Who owned it?””

Daniel looked at Renee.

She whispered, “Margaret.””

Walter turned.

“What?””

“Margaret had transferred the property into her name shortly before the accident.””

Daniel nodded.

“Thomas discovered the transfer was fraudulent. He intended to report it.””

Walter stared at the documents.

“And then he died.””

Daniel didn't answer.

Sophie slowly approached the table.

“Dad, are you saying Uncle Thomas might still be alive?””

Daniel looked at her.

“I don't know.””

Walter's voice trembled.

“But you do know something.””

Daniel nodded reluctantly.

“I received a letter from him six days ago.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Where is it?””

Daniel opened his briefcase and removed a sealed envelope.

He placed it in front of Walter.

The handwriting was familiar.

Walter recognized it instantly.

His brother's handwriting.

He opened the letter.

There were only three sentences.

Walter, if you are reading this, then Daniel has finally done what he should have done thirty-six years ago.

Do not trust the property documents.

And whatever happens, do not let Renee take Buddy.

Walter looked up.

Renee had gone completely white.

Daniel whispered, “Thomas is alive.””

Then a phone began ringing.

It wasn't Marcus's.

It wasn't Daniel's.

It was Renee's.

She looked at the screen.

Her hand shook.

The caller's name was displayed.

*THOMAS HENDERSON.*
