Chapter 9: The Room Behind the Wall

Walter looked toward the staircase.
Lily's bedroom was at the end of the upstairs hallway.
He had painted it himself two years earlier, choosing a soft yellow color because Lily loved sunshine.
Now he couldn't stop imagining another person living behind those walls.
His brother.
The man he had buried.
The man he had mourned.
“Renee,” he said quietly, “what did you just tell me?””
Renee wiped her cheeks.
“Thomas stayed here.””
“For six months?””
She nodded.
“After the accident.””
Walter shook his head.
“No. I would have known.””
“You were away.””
“When?””
“After Margaret's operation.””
Walter frowned.
He remembered that period.
Margaret had undergone surgery, and he had spent several weeks traveling between the hospital and a rehabilitation facility.
But he had never been away for six months.
Renee continued.
“You were staying with Marcus's aunt for a while because the doctors wanted you to rest. Margaret told everyone she needed privacy while she recovered.””
Walter stared.
“She told me she was staying with her sister.””
Renee nodded.
“She was.””
Walter looked toward the upstairs hallway.
“Then where was Thomas?””
“In the spare room.””
Marcus shook his head.
“That's impossible. I've been in that room hundreds of times.””
Renee looked at him.
“Not the room itself. Behind the wall.””
Daniel finally spoke.
“This is ridiculous.””
Walter turned.
“Then explain it.””
Daniel adjusted his coat.
“I won't be part of this fantasy.””
Marcus stepped in front of him.
“You're not leaving.””
Daniel stared at him.
“Get out of my way.””
“No.””
Walter looked at Renee.
“Show me.””
She hesitated.
Then she walked upstairs.
The family followed.
Lily appeared at the top of the staircase holding a picture book.
“Grandpa?””
Walter immediately softened.
“Sweetheart, go downstairs with Marcus for a minute.””
“Why?””
“We need to look at something.””
Lily glanced at Renee.
“Is Buddy coming home?””
Walter swallowed.
“We're working on it.””
Marcus took Lily's hand.
“Come on. Let's get you something to eat.””
When they were alone, Renee walked to the far end of the hallway.
She stopped beside Lily's bedroom.
The wall was covered with pale yellow wallpaper.
A framed picture of Buddy hung above the small bookshelf.
Renee touched the lower corner of the frame.
Then she pressed a hidden latch.
A narrow section of the wall shifted inward.
Walter stepped back.
“What is that?””
Renee pulled gently.
A small door opened.
Behind it was a narrow staircase descending into darkness.
Walter stared.
“How long has this been here?””
“Since before Margaret bought the house.””
Marcus appeared at the doorway.
“Dad?””
Walter turned.
“Bring a flashlight.””
Marcus returned with his phone.
The light illuminated the narrow passage.
There were wooden steps leading down to a small hidden room.
Walter descended slowly.
The air smelled of dust, old wood, and something faintly metallic.
At the bottom was a narrow bed.
A small table.
A chair.
And a shelf filled with old photographs.
Walter stepped forward.
On the wall was a photograph of Thomas.
Not the young Thomas from the wedding picture.
A much older man.
His hair was gray.
His face was thinner.
But it was unmistakably him.
Walter touched the frame.
“Thomas.””
Marcus looked around.
“Someone lived here.””
Renee nodded.
“He stayed here after he recovered.””
Walter turned.
“Why didn't he tell me?””
“Margaret said it would be dangerous.””
“For whom?””
Renee looked toward Daniel.
“For everyone.””
Daniel stood at the top of the stairs.
“Enough.””
Marcus turned.
“Did you know about this room?””
Daniel didn't answer.
Walter looked at the small table.
There was an old wooden box on it.
He opened it.
Inside were several letters, a pocket watch, and a small audio recorder.
Walter picked up the recorder.
“What's this?””
Renee looked nervous.
“Thomas left it here.””
Daniel immediately descended the stairs.
“Don't touch that.””
Marcus stepped between him and Walter.
“Why?””
“Because it's private.””
Walter pressed the play button.
A burst of static came through.
Then a man's voice.
Thomas.
“If anyone finds this recording, it means Margaret's plan failed.””
Walter held his breath.
The recording continued.
“Daniel believes he can take the property and disappear. He thinks I don't know what he did with the original deed.””
A pause.
Then Thomas continued.
“But I know.””
Walter looked at Daniel.
The older man stood completely still.
The recording played on.
“Daniel, if you ever hear this, remember that I gave you one chance to tell Walter the truth.””
A door slammed in the background of the recording.
Then another voice appeared.
Margaret.
“Thomas, please. Don't do this.””
Thomas replied.
“You're protecting him.””
“I'm protecting my family.””
“Walter deserves to know.””
Margaret's voice became desperate.
“If you tell him, he'll lose everything.””
Thomas laughed bitterly.
“Everything? Margaret, he already lost his brother.””
There was a long silence.
Then Margaret whispered something.
Walter moved closer to the recorder.
“What did she say?””
The recording continued.
“I'm pregnant.””
Walter froze.
Marcus looked at him.
“Dad?””
Thomas's voice sounded stunned.
“Whose child?””
Margaret began crying.
“Daniel's.””
Walter closed his eyes.
He already knew about Grace.
But the recording was from after Thomas's supposed death.
Which meant Margaret had been pregnant again.
Thomas continued.
“Then what about Walter?””
Margaret whispered.
“He thinks the baby is his.””
Walter felt the room spin.
The recording crackled.
Thomas spoke again.
“You can't keep doing this to him.””
Margaret's voice hardened.
“I have no choice.””
“There's always a choice.””
“Not when Daniel controls the documents.””
Walter looked at Daniel.
“What documents?””
Daniel said nothing.
The recording continued.
Thomas's voice became urgent.
“He changed the deed. He changed the ownership records. He even changed the medical documents from the accident.””
Margaret gasped.
“Don't say that.””
“Walter needs to know who his brother really was.””
Then another voice interrupted.
Daniel.
“You should have stayed dead, Thomas.””
A crash followed.
The recording stopped.
Nobody moved.
Walter slowly turned toward Daniel.
“Did you try to kill my brother?””
Daniel looked at him.
“I was protecting myself.””
“From what?””
“From a man who wanted to destroy everything.””
Walter shook his head.
“You let me bury a stranger.””
Daniel's face hardened.
“I didn't arrange the accident.””
“But you knew what happened.””
Daniel looked away.
Walter took another step.
“Who was in the coffin?””
Daniel didn't answer.
Renee finally spoke.
“It was a man named Robert Collins.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Who?””
“An employee at Thomas's construction company.””
Walter stared.
“Why?””
Renee's voice trembled.
“Because Daniel had arranged the accident to look like Thomas had died. But Thomas survived. Robert was found near the vehicle, and Daniel used the confusion to make the identification.””
Walter closed his eyes.
He remembered the funeral.
The flowers.
The sealed coffin.
The words spoken by the minister.
He remembered thinking his brother was gone forever.
And the entire time, Thomas had been alive.
Living in a hidden room beneath his own house.
Walter looked at Daniel.
“You took my brother's life.””
Daniel's expression changed.
“No. Thomas chose to disappear.””
“You helped him.””
“I was trying to prevent a scandal.””
Walter laughed bitterly.
“A scandal?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Margaret was pregnant with my child. Thomas was married to her. Elizabeth was pregnant with mine.
The family was collapsing. I had a business to protect.””
Walter stared.
“So you let me believe I was married to a woman who loved you.””
Daniel said nothing.
“And you let me raise a child who wasn't mine.””
Daniel looked down.
Walter's voice broke.
“Did Margaret ever love me?””
Daniel finally answered.
“Yes.””
Walter looked at him.
“Then why?””
“Because she loved you too much to tell you the truth.””
Walter shook his head.
“That's not love.””
He turned toward the shelf.
A photograph sat behind the recorder.
It showed Margaret holding a newborn baby.
Beside her stood Thomas.
And in the background, partially visible, was Walter.
He looked younger.
Happier.
Unaware.
Walter picked up the photograph.
On the back was a date.
The day Marcus was born.
He turned it over again.
Then he noticed a small handwritten note.
Our son. Our second chance.
Walter looked at Marcus.
“Your mother wrote this?””
Marcus took the photograph.
He stared at it.
Then his expression changed.
“Dad...””
Walter looked at him.
“What?””
Marcus pointed to the baby.
“That's me.””
Walter nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Look at the person holding Mom's hand.””
Walter examined the photograph.
The figure was mostly hidden behind Margaret.
But the sleeve was visible.
A green hospital gown.
And on the wrist was a hospital identification band.
Walter leaned closer.
The band had a name printed on it.
*THOMAS HENDERSON.*
Walter looked up.
Marcus whispered, “Uncle Thomas was there when I was born.””
Renee nodded.
“He was.””
Walter stared at the photograph.
“Then why did Margaret tell me she was alone?””
Renee's voice became almost inaudible.
“Because Thomas was your biological father, Marcus.””
The room went silent.
Marcus stepped back.
“What?””
Renee began crying.
“Your mother and Thomas were still together when she became pregnant. She told everyone the baby was yours, Walter, because she believed it would protect Thomas.””
Walter looked at his son.
Marcus stared at him.
For years, he had believed Walter was his father.
Now, the truth was shifting beneath his feet.
Walter stepped toward Marcus.
“Son...””
Marcus raised a hand.
“Don't.””
Walter stopped.
Marcus looked at the photograph.
Then at Daniel.
Then at Renee.
“Who else knew?””
Renee couldn't answer.
Daniel finally spoke.
“Everyone who mattered.””
Marcus's face hardened.
“And I didn't?””
Daniel looked away.
Marcus laughed once.
It was a broken sound.
“My whole life has been built around secrets.””
He turned toward the stairs.
Walter followed him.
“Marcus, wait.””
Marcus stopped.
“Did you know?””
Walter shook his head.
“No.””
“Did you ever suspect?””
“No.””
Marcus stared at his father.
Then he looked at the photograph again.
“I need some air.””
He climbed the stairs.
Walter remained below.
Daniel approached.
“Walter, we need to finish this.””
Walter turned slowly.
“Get out of my house.””
Daniel frowned.
“You don't understand what's at stake.””
“I understand perfectly.””
“No, you don't. If those documents are released, the entire family could lose everything.””
Walter looked at the recorder.
“Then perhaps we should finally find out what everything is.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“You think Thomas is innocent?””
Walter said nothing.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Ask him what happened to Robert Collins's family.””
Walter frowned.
“What?””
Daniel continued.
“Ask him why he never told you that Robert's wife received money every month after the funeral.””
Walter stared.
Daniel looked toward the hidden staircase.
“Your brother isn't the victim you think he is.””
Before Walter could respond, his phone vibrated.
A message from Thomas.
Walter, bring Marcus to the rescue center immediately.
A second message appeared.
Do not bring Daniel.
Then a third.
And whatever you do, don't let him see the original will.
Walter looked up.
Daniel was watching him.
His eyes moved toward the phone.
And suddenly Walter understood why Daniel had come back after thirty-six years.
He wasn't there to confess.
He was there to stop them from finding something.
Something Margaret had hidden.
Something Thomas had protected.
Something that could finally explain why Buddy had been taken.
Walter climbed the stairs.
At the top, he found Marcus standing beside Lily.
Lily was holding her yellow leash.
“Grandpa?””
Walter crouched.
“Sweetheart, we're going to see Buddy.””
Her eyes brightened.
“Really?””
“Yes.””
She smiled for the first time that day.
“Can I bring his leash?””
Walter nodded.
“Absolutely.””
Then he looked at Marcus.
“We're going to the rescue center.””
Marcus wiped his eyes.
“Why?””
Walter glanced back toward the hidden room.
“Because your uncle has something to show us.””
As they headed downstairs, the front door opened.
Daniel was gone.
But his briefcase remained on the table.
Marcus picked it up.
It was locked.
Walter looked at it.
“Leave it.””
Marcus frowned.
“Dad, what if there's something important inside?””
Walter looked toward the empty doorway.
“There's already enough important things in this house.””
He took Lily's hand.
And they left.
But neither of them noticed the small red light blinking beneath the briefcase.
May you like
A recording device was still running.
And somewhere outside, Daniel was listening.
