Chapter 6: The Secret Hidden Inside the Trust
Nobody spoke after the name was repeated.
Denise stood beside the fallen chair, one hand gripping the edge of the table.
Madison was crying quietly.
Victor stared at the recording device as though he expected Daniel's voice to return.
I looked at James.
"Can you explain what we just heard?""
He nodded slowly.
"The recording appears to contain a second audio channel. It may have been captured accidentally or deliberately.""
"Can you recover the rest?""
"I'll need a specialist.""
Victor looked at him.
"Contact the technical team. I want the original recording examined.""
James took out his phone.
Denise finally found her voice.
"You're making a mistake.""
Victor turned.
"Which part?""
"Dragging all of this back into the open.""
"Your husband's final message mentions a classified transfer. Your daughters deserve to know what happened.""
Denise shook her head.
"You don't understand Richard.""
I stepped forward.
"Then explain him.""
She looked at me.
For a moment, I thought she would finally tell us everything.
Instead, she whispered:
"Richard doesn't forgive people who betray him.""
Victor gave a bitter laugh.
"Then perhaps you should have thought about that before helping him.""
Denise lowered her eyes.
James returned to the table.
"There's another matter we need to address.""
He placed the trust document in front of me.
"Your grandmother's trust has been frozen for years because of the dispute concerning your identity. But the trust contains more than financial assets.""
"What else?""
"An archive.""
Victor nodded.
"Eleanor collected everything Daniel sent her before his final mission. Letters, photographs, copies of reports, and several documents connected to Meridian.""
I looked at the paperwork.
"Why wasn't the archive released?""
"Because Eleanor left specific instructions. It could only be opened when both of Daniel's daughters were present.""
Madison looked up.
"Both of us?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Victor looked at us.
"Because she wanted you to hear the truth together.""
James opened a separate folder.
"According to the trust's instructions, the archive was stored in a private facility under the supervision of Eleanor's attorney.""
"Is it still there?"" I asked.
"Yes. But access requires identity verification from both beneficiaries.""
I glanced at Madison.
She nodded slowly.
"I'll do it.""
Denise shook her head.
"No.""
Madison looked at her.
"Mom, I'm not asking permission.""
"You don't understand what you're agreeing to.""
"Then explain it!""
Denise looked between us.
"You think money and old photographs are all that's inside that archive? You think your grandmother kept those things because she wanted to tell family stories?""
Victor answered.
"She kept them because Daniel was trying to expose a criminal operation.""
Denise's eyes filled.
"And you think that operation ended when he disappeared?""
Victor didn't respond.
She leaned forward.
"It didn't.""
The words seemed to drain the warmth from the room.
"What do you mean?"" I asked.
Denise looked toward the window.
"Richard still has people working for him.""
James closed the folder.
"That may be true. But it doesn't change our obligations.""
"Your obligations?"" Denise laughed bitterly.
"You have no idea what he can do.""
Victor stepped closer.
"Neither do you, apparently. Because you thought he would protect you.""
Denise's face crumpled.
"I didn't know what else to do.""
I looked at her.
"You could have told the truth.""
She shook her head.
"I was afraid.""
"So was I!""
My voice broke.
"I was afraid every time I asked why Grandma never visited. I was afraid every time you told me my father had forgotten me. I was afraid that there was something wrong with me because nobody wanted to talk about where I came from.""
Denise covered her face.
I continued.
"You let me believe I was unwanted. You let me grow up thinking I had lost everyone.""
She whispered my name.
I stepped back.
"Don't.""
Madison moved closer to me.
Her hand found mine.
It was a strange feeling.
We had spent years competing for scraps of our mother's affection.
Now we were discovering that we had both been manipulated by the same person.
James cleared his throat.
"If we're going to access the archive, we need to begin the verification process today.""
Victor nodded.
"Then let's go.""
Denise grabbed her handbag.
"I'm coming.""
Victor looked at her.
"Why?""
"Because I have a right to know what Eleanor left.""
James shook his head.
"You're not listed as an authorized beneficiary.""
"I am their mother.""
"That does not grant you access.""
Denise looked at me.
"Nia, please.""
I didn't answer.
For twenty years, I had wanted my mother to stand beside me.
Now that she was asking, I couldn't bring myself to trust her.
Madison squeezed my hand.
"Let's go.""
The trust's legal office was located in a stone building overlooking a quiet street in Annapolis.
It was nearly evening when we arrived.
Rain had begun falling lightly, leaving the pavement dark and reflective.
A receptionist led us into a conference room where a gray-haired attorney waited beside a stack of sealed boxes.
"Mr. Hale," he greeted Victor.
Then his eyes moved toward us.
"These must be Daniel's daughters.""
Victor nodded.
"This is Nia and Madison.""
The attorney stood.
"My name is Robert Ellis. Your grandmother trusted me with her affairs for many years.""
He placed two documents on the table.
"Before we proceed, I need to verify your identities.""
Madison handed over her driver's license.
I provided mine.
Robert compared our details with the original birth records.
He looked at the documents for several minutes.
Then he removed his glasses.
"Interesting.""
"What?"" I asked.
He turned one sheet toward us.
"This is the original registration for both children.""
I looked down.
The first entry listed Madison.
The second listed me.
Both had Daniel Hale's name as the father.
But the second page contained a handwritten note.
*Beneficiary identity amended by request of guardian.*
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Robert looked uncomfortable.
"It means your grandmother believed your identity had been deliberately altered.""
"Why?""
He glanced toward Victor.
"She suspected someone had attempted to prevent you from inheriting the trust.""
I looked at the trust amount again.
"How much is actually in there?""
Robert gave a careful answer.
"The current valuation is approximately eighteen million dollars.""
Madison gasped.
I stared.
Eighteen million.
It was a number so large that it didn't seem real.
Robert continued.
"However, the money is not the primary concern. Eleanor placed a condition on the trust. The archive must be reviewed before any distribution can occur.""
Victor leaned forward.
"Can we open it?""
Robert nodded.
He pressed a button on his desk.
A staff member entered carrying a small metal case.
It was old, with a combination lock and a brass plate engraved with Eleanor's initials.
My throat tightened.
I recognized the handwriting.
The same handwriting from the letter.
Robert placed the case in front of us.
"Your grandmother left instructions that the case could only be opened by her two granddaughters together.""
He looked at Madison.
"Please place your hand here.""
Madison hesitated.
Then she touched the small sensor on the case.
A green light appeared.
I placed my hand beside hers.
Another green light illuminated.
There was a soft mechanical click.
The case opened.
Inside were three envelopes, a small flash drive, and a velvet pouch.
The first envelope had both our names.
Madison picked it up.
"Should we open it?""
I nodded.
She unfolded the letter.
My beautiful girls,
If you are reading this together, then I have finally succeeded in bringing you back to each other.
Madison began crying.
I took the letter from her.
I have spent years trying to protect what your father left behind. Not because of money, but because the truth is worth more than everything this world can buy.
There are two things you must understand.
First, neither of you was ever unwanted.
Second, the story of your father's disappearance is not the story you were given.
I paused.
The next paragraph was underlined.
Daniel did not disappear because he abandoned his family. He disappeared because he discovered that someone had been using his identity to authorize transactions connected to Meridian Defense.
Victor leaned forward.
I continued.
The person responsible had access to his personal records, his military credentials, and the documents connected to his family.
My hands began trembling.
The letter continued.
I believe that person was someone Daniel trusted.
I looked at Victor.
He was staring at the page.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
There is a reason I insisted that both of you be present when this archive was opened. One of you holds the key to the financial records. The other holds the key to the original mission files.
Madison frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Robert removed the velvet pouch.
Inside were two small metal keys.
One had a silver ribbon.
The other had a black ribbon.
A number was engraved on each.
"These correspond to two separate storage compartments," Robert explained.
Victor looked at the keys.
"Where are the compartments?""
Robert checked a note.
"One is located here. The other is at a naval records facility.""
I picked up the silver key.
It felt strangely heavy.
"Which one is mine?""
Robert turned the key over.
A tiny letter was engraved on the back.
N.
The other key carried an M.
Madison held hers.
I looked toward the flash drive.
"What is on that?""
Robert hesitated.
"Your grandmother instructed me to play the recording only after both beneficiaries had been verified.""
He inserted the drive into his computer.
A video appeared.
The screen showed a woman sitting in a dimly lit room.
Her hair was silver.
Her face was thinner than in the photographs.
But her eyes were unmistakable.
Eleanor.
My grandmother.
I covered my mouth.
Madison whispered, "Grandma...""
The woman looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this, my beautiful girls, then I hope you are together.""
She smiled sadly.
"I wish I could have been there to hold you both.""
My eyes filled.
Then her expression became serious.
"There is something I need you to know about your mother.""
The room went silent.
Eleanor leaned closer to the camera.
"Denise did not change Nia's records because she wanted to protect her from Daniel's enemies.""
Victor slowly stood.
The recording continued.
"She changed them because she discovered that Nia was not the only child Daniel had fathered.""
Madison looked at me.
I stared at the screen.
Eleanor's voice trembled.
"Your father had another daughter before he met Denise.""
The room seemed to tilt.
"Her name was Charlotte.""
I looked at Madison.
Then at Victor.
"Who is Charlotte?""
Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.
"Charlotte was Daniel's first child. She was taken from him as an infant, and your father spent years trying to find her.""
The video flickered.
Then Eleanor delivered the final revelation.
"Charlotte is alive. And one of you has known her your entire life.""
The screen went black.
Nobody moved.
Then Madison slowly turned toward Denise.
Her voice was barely audible.
"Mom...""
Denise's face had gone completely white.
"Who is Charlotte?""
Denise stared at the blank screen.
Then she whispered:
"She's not supposed to exist.""
At that exact moment, James's phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
And suddenly stood up.
"What do you mean the archive was accessed?""
Victor turned sharply.
James listened for another few seconds.
Then he looked at me.
His expression was terrified.
"Someone has just opened the second storage compartment.""
I gripped the silver key.
"Who?""
James swallowed.
"The access record shows the authorized name.""
He turned the phone toward Victor.
On the screen was a photograph from the facility's security camera.
A woman stood outside the locked archive.
She wore a dark coat and carried a small leather handbag.
I recognized her immediately.
She was the woman from the photograph with Eleanor.
The woman I had been told was dead before I was born.
Charlotte.
But beneath the photograph was something even more disturbing.
The access record showed that she had entered using a fingerprint registered under the name...
*Nia Elizabeth Carter.*
I stared at the screen.
"I was here the entire time.""
Victor slowly took the phone.
Then he looked at me.
"Someone has your fingerprint.""
May you like
And from the doorway, Denise whispered:
"Because Charlotte has been pretending to be you.""
