Chapter 9: The Man Behind Every Lie

Nobody moved.

The knock came again.

Three times.

Then twice.

Daniel's face had turned pale.

Charlotte quietly pulled the curtains closed.

Madison moved toward the kitchen.

I stood beside my father, my heart pounding.

"Is it Robert?""

Daniel nodded.

"He knows the signal.""

Charlotte whispered, "How?""

Daniel looked at the memory card on the table.

"Because he created it.""

The door handle moved.

A man's voice came from outside.

"Daniel? It's Robert. We need to talk.""

I looked at my father.

"Don't open it.""

Daniel shook his head.

"I won't.""

Robert knocked again.

"Nia, Madison, I know you're inside.""

His voice was calm.

Almost friendly.

"Please open the door. This is getting out of hand.""

Madison whispered, "How does he know our names?""

Charlotte shook her head.

"He's been watching us.""

Daniel reached for his phone.

"No signal.""

Charlotte checked hers.

"Mine too.""

I felt cold.

Robert's voice came again.

"Daniel, you cannot keep running.""

My father closed his eyes.

Then he looked at me.

"I need you to listen carefully.""

I leaned closer.

"You're not going anywhere.""

He gave me a sad smile.

"I've already spent twenty years away from you. I won't let him take you too.""

He reached into the wooden box and removed a small key.

"There's a storage room beneath the house.""

Charlotte looked at him.

"Dad, no.""

"The original records are down there.""

"Then we'll get them together.""

Daniel shook his head.

"If Robert gets those files, he can destroy everything.""

I took the key.

"Show me.""

He pointed toward a narrow door beside the kitchen.

"Go down the stairs. There's a metal cabinet. The second drawer has a red folder.""

I looked at Charlotte.

She nodded.

Madison followed me.

We opened the door and descended into a dim basement.

The air smelled of dust and old wood.

A single bulb illuminated a narrow corridor.

At the end stood a metal cabinet.

I found the second drawer.

Inside was a red folder.

I opened it.

There were photographs, bank statements, copies of military documents, and several letters.

One photograph showed Robert Ellis standing beside Richard Voss.

Another showed Denise.

And another showed a younger woman.

I recognized her from the family photographs.

It was my mother's closest friend, Patricia.

She had attended every birthday party.

Every holiday dinner.

She had been the woman who brought flowers when my father supposedly died.

I turned the photograph over.

*Patricia Moore — Meridian Liaison.*

Madison stared.

"Patricia?""

I nodded.

"Mom's best friend.""

She took the photograph.

"She was at our house every week.""

A paper slipped from the folder.

It was a list of names.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

Original identity transfer completed. Nia Carter removed from protected record. Charlotte Hale reassigned under alternate identity.

I stared at the sentence.

"Madison...""

She looked at the paper.

Her face drained.

"Charlotte was registered as you?""

Charlotte's voice came from the stairs.

"Yes.""

We turned.

She stood at the bottom of the steps.

Daniel had sent her to check on us.

"I was given a different identity when I was a child," she explained.

"Patricia arranged the paperwork. She wanted to hide my connection to Daniel.""

I looked at the document.

"Why?""

"Because I had seen something I wasn't supposed to see.""

"What?""

Charlotte hesitated.

"Patricia was the person who delivered the original mission files to Richard. I saw her taking them from Daniel's office.""

I looked at the photograph again.

Everything was beginning to fit.

The altered records.

The missing archive.

The mysterious transfers.

The woman who had lived in our house under another name.

But one thing still didn't make sense.

"Why did they need my identity?""

Charlotte looked at me.

"Because Daniel had hidden the final access code inside your original birth registration.""

I stared.

"My birth certificate?""

"Not the certificate itself. The original hospital record.""

She pointed toward the red folder.

"Your father split the access information into two parts. One was attached to your identity. The other was attached to mine.""

Madison looked at the papers.

"So they needed both of us.""

Charlotte nodded.

"And they needed us to remain separated.""

A loud crash came from upstairs.

We froze.

Daniel shouted something.

Then came the sound of furniture scraping across the floor.

Charlotte ran toward the stairs.

I followed.

Madison grabbed my arm.

"Nia, wait!""

But I was already moving.

When I reached the living room, the front door stood open.

Robert Ellis was inside.

He held a small black pistol pointed toward Daniel.

My father was standing between him and the hallway.

"Step away from him!"" I shouted.

Robert turned.

His expression was almost disappointed.

"Nia. I was hoping you would stay downstairs.""

Daniel raised his cane.

"Get out of my house.""

Robert smiled.

"This isn't your house anymore.""

Charlotte stepped into the room.

"Put the weapon down.""

Robert looked at her.

"Charlotte. You always were difficult.""

She moved toward him.

"Twenty years of lies. Was it worth it?""

Robert shrugged.

"Richard paid well.""

Madison looked horrified.

"You helped him destroy our family?""

Robert glanced at her.

"Your family was already falling apart.""

He shifted the gun toward me.

"Now, Nia, I need you to listen.""

I held my hands up.

"What do you want?""

"The original archive.""

"Why?""

"Because it contains information that belongs to people far more important than your grandfather's little family.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"You won't get it.""

Robert laughed.

"You still think you can stop me?""

Daniel's voice hardened.

"I stopped you once.""

Robert's smile disappeared.

For the first time, he looked angry.

"You should have stayed missing.""

Daniel glanced toward me.

"Now, Nia!""

I understood.

I dropped to the floor.

Charlotte lunged toward Robert's arm.

The gun discharged.

A deafening crack filled the room.

Madison screamed.

Daniel fell against the table.

"DA—!""

I crawled toward him.

He was gripping his shoulder.

Blood spread across his shirt.

Robert shoved Charlotte away and ran toward the open door.

But before he could reach it, headlights flooded the living room.

A vehicle stopped outside.

Two naval security officers rushed through the doorway.

"Drop the weapon!""

Robert froze.

The gun fell to the floor.

One officer tackled him while the other secured the room.

Charlotte dropped beside Daniel.

"You're bleeding!""

He pressed his hand against his shoulder.

"I'm all right.""

"You're not all right!""

I grabbed a towel from the kitchen and pressed it against the wound.

My hands were shaking.

"Stay with me, Dad.""

He looked at me.

And despite the pain, he smiled.

"You called me Dad.""

I began crying.

"Of course I did.""

Madison knelt beside us.

Daniel reached for her hand.

"My girls.""

The officers called for emergency medical assistance.

Robert was placed in handcuffs.

As they escorted him outside, he turned toward us.

"You think you've won?""

Victor's voice came from the doorway.

"No.""

Everyone turned.

Victor stood there with James and two additional security officers.

He looked at Robert.

"But we finally know who we're dealing with.""

Robert laughed.

"You still don't understand. Richard isn't the one you're looking for.""

Victor stepped closer.

"Then who is?""

Robert looked toward Denise.

I turned.

My mother stood behind Victor.

Her face was pale.

She had arrived without us noticing.

Robert smiled.

"Ask Denise.""

My mother shook her head.

"Don't.""

Robert continued.

"She knows who signed the final authorization.""

I stared at her.

"Mom?""

She looked at me.

Then at Daniel.

My father slowly lowered his hand from his wound.

His expression changed.

"Denise...""

She began crying.

"I didn't know what the authorization was for.""

Victor stepped forward.

"That's not an answer.""

Denise looked toward Robert.

He gave her a small nod.

Then she whispered:

"I signed it.""

The room went silent.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"What did you sign?""

Denise covered her mouth.

"The transfer order.""

Daniel stared at her.

"You told me you never gave Richard the final authorization.""

"I didn't know what it meant!""

"You signed it?""

She nodded.

Daniel looked away.

For a moment, he seemed more hurt than angry.

I stepped toward my mother.

"What transfer?""

She couldn't meet my eyes.

Robert answered for her.

"The transfer of the children.""

Madison shook her head.

"What children?""

Robert smiled.

"Both of you.""

He looked at me.

"Your mother agreed to hand over one daughter to protect the other.""

I stared at Denise.

"Which daughter?""

She began sobbing.

Daniel slowly sat down.

His face had gone gray.

Then he spoke.

"Denise, tell them the truth.""

She shook her head.

"I can't.""

"Tell them.""

My mother looked at Madison.

Then at me.

Finally, she whispered:

"I gave Charlotte to Richard.""

Charlotte froze.

"What?""

Denise began crying harder.

"I thought he would only take her away for a few weeks. He promised he would return her.""

Madison stepped backward.

"You gave away your own child?""

Denise looked at her.

"I thought I was saving you!""

Charlotte's face crumpled.

"You let me grow up believing I had no family.""

Denise reached for her.

Charlotte stepped away.

Then Daniel spoke again.

"That's not the whole truth.""

He looked at Denise.

"You didn't give Charlotte to Richard because you wanted to save Madison.""

Denise stopped crying.

Daniel's voice became painfully quiet.

"You gave her away because Richard told you which daughter was worth more to him.""

I stared at my mother.

"What does that mean?""

Daniel looked at me.

"He wanted Nia.""

My heart stopped.

"He wanted me?""

Daniel nodded.

"Because you were the child whose identity contained the final access code. Charlotte was only leverage.""

Denise lowered her head.

And then my father revealed the secret that had been buried for twenty years.

"Your mother didn't just sign the transfer order, Nia.""

He looked at Denise.

"She chose which baby would disappear.""

Before anyone could respond, Robert suddenly laughed from the doorway.

"There's one more thing you should know.""

He looked directly at me.

"Richard Voss isn't dead.""

Victor turned sharply.

Robert smiled.

"He's been listening to this entire conversation.""

Then every phone in the room began vibrating simultaneously.

A message appeared on the screen.

*THANK YOU FOR FINDING MY DAUGHTERS. NOW BRING THEM TO ME.*

I looked at Daniel.

His face had gone completely white.

Because beneath the message was a photograph.

A recent photograph.

It showed my mother standing outside the house.

May you like

And behind her, reflected in the window, was a man wearing dark sunglasses.

Richard Voss.
