Chapter 4: What My Mother Left Behind

For several seconds, nobody moved.
The envelope sat open on the coffee table, its contents scattered across the polished wooden surface.
My father was staring at Uncle Daniel.
Vanessa had gone unusually quiet.
And I was holding a document that seemed to suggest my mother had left me something far more valuable than money.
"Explain what you mean," my father finally said.
Daniel loosened his tie and sat down without being invited.
"Elaine was a very careful woman, Richard. You know that.""
"Don't talk about my wife. Tell me what you know.""
Daniel glanced at me.
"Your mother owned shares in a private property development company before she died. Not ordinary shares, either. Controlling shares.""
I frowned.
"I don't understand.""
He leaned forward.
"Your mother inherited a property portfolio from her parents. Over the years, she invested in commercial buildings, residential developments, and several parcels of land. She consolidated those assets into a private holding company.""
My father looked confused.
"Elaine told me she had investments. She never mentioned controlling shares.""
"Because she didn't want the family involved.""
Daniel tapped the document.
"She created a trust that would transfer those shares to Nia when she turned twenty-five.""
I looked down.
Twenty-five.
Three years away.
"What does that have to do with Vanessa?""
Daniel smiled without humor.
"Everything.""
My father took the document from my hands.
"Why would Vanessa be interested in property shares?""
Daniel opened another folder.
"Because the company is worth considerably more than the inheritance account.""
He placed a financial statement on the table.
The estimated value was $18.6 million.
My mouth went dry.
I looked at my father.
"Is this real?""
He studied the document.
"I recognize the company.""
"How much of it did Mom own?""
Daniel answered before my father could.
"Sixty-two percent.""
I felt dizzy.
My mother had never spoken about wealth.
She had lived simply, shopped carefully, and taught me to save birthday money.
I remembered her repairing an old handbag instead of buying a new one.
She used to say that money was a tool, not a measure of someone's worth.
And apparently, she had quietly built an empire.
"Why didn't she tell me?"" I whispered.
Daniel's expression softened.
"She wanted you to grow up without feeling that money defined your life.""
My father looked at him sharply.
"How do you know all this?""
Daniel paused.
"Because I helped her establish the company.""
The room became silent again.
I turned toward him.
"You worked with my mother?""
"Years ago.""
"Then why are you involved with Vanessa?""
His face hardened.
"That's a complicated story.""
My father stood.
"No. It's a simple question. Why did you take money from Elaine's trust?""
Daniel rubbed his jaw.
"I didn't take it for myself.""
"Then where is it?""
"Some went toward company expenses.""
"Some?""
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
She immediately stood.
"Richard, this is getting out of hand.""
My father pointed toward the chair.
"Sit down.""
Vanessa stared at him.
"Excuse me?""
"Sit. Down.""
She slowly lowered herself onto the sofa.
Daniel opened his briefcase again.
"There was an agreement.""
He removed a document with several signatures.
"Vanessa wanted to acquire Elaine's controlling shares before Nia turned twenty-five.""
My father looked at his wife.
"Why?""
Vanessa lifted her chin.
"Because I was trying to protect this family.""
I almost laughed.
"From what?""
She turned toward me.
"You don't understand how these things work.""
"Then explain it.""
She ignored my question.
Daniel continued.
"Elaine's trust contains a clause. If Nia is declared financially incapable of managing the inheritance, a temporary administrator can be appointed.""
My father frowned.
"Who can declare that?""
"An independent legal authority, under certain circumstances.""
"And who becomes the administrator?""
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
"That was the proposed arrangement.""
My father's face darkened.
"You wanted to control my daughter's inheritance?""
Vanessa stood again.
"I wanted to make sure Madison wasn't left with nothing!""
I stared at her.
"Why would Madison receive anything from my mother's estate?""
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
"Because she is part of this family!""
"She isn't my mother's daughter.""
The words came out quietly.
But they hit the room like a slap.
Vanessa's lips tightened.
"Your mother is dead, Nia. You cannot keep using her as an excuse to make everyone else feel small.""
My father stepped toward her.
"Enough.""
Vanessa turned to him.
"You're going to destroy everything over a dead woman's investments?""
He looked at her for a long moment.
Then he said something I would never forget.
"No. I'm finally protecting what she left behind.""
Daniel cleared his throat.
"Richard, there's another issue.""
My father turned.
"What now?""
"The property company has a board meeting scheduled in twelve days.""
"And?""
"Someone has submitted a motion to remove Elaine's original trustee representative.""
I looked at the document.
My name was listed beside the position.
"Why would they remove me?""
Daniel answered carefully.
"Because the person who controls the shares can influence the board.""
My father shook his head.
"She's not even twenty-five.""
"Exactly.""
I stared at him.
"Who submitted the motion?""
Daniel hesitated.
Then he said:
"Vanessa.""
My father slowly turned toward his wife.
She looked away.
I couldn't believe it.
While I had been working late shifts to afford a dress, Vanessa had been preparing to take control of an $18 million company.
And the woman who had spent months telling me I was selfish had apparently been trying to make me legally incapable of controlling my own inheritance.
My father picked up the documents.
"Everyone leaves this house except Nia.""
Vanessa stood abruptly.
"Richard!""
"Now.""
"You're throwing me out?""
"I'm asking you to leave while my attorney investigates.""
She grabbed her handbag.
"You'll regret this.""
My father didn't respond.
Madison came down the stairs, holding her phone.
"Mom, what's happening?""
Vanessa turned toward her.
"Get your things.""
Madison looked between us.
"Why?""
"Because apparently, we're no longer welcome.""
I watched Madison's expression change.
She looked at the documents.
Then at the envelope.
Then at me.
"Is this about the money?""
Nobody answered.
Madison looked at her mother.
"Mom?""
Vanessa grabbed her daughter's wrist.
"Upstairs. Now.""
Madison pulled away.
"Don't grab me!""
For the first time, she seemed frightened of her own mother.
Daniel stood.
"I think everyone needs to calm down.""
My father pointed at the front door.
"Daniel, you're leaving too.""
Daniel picked up his briefcase.
"You're making a mistake, Richard.""
"Maybe. But I won't make it twice.""
The door closed behind them.
My father remained standing in the living room.
Then he sat heavily on the sofa.
I approached him.
"Dad?""
He rubbed his face.
"I'm sorry.""
I sat beside him.
"You didn't know about the company.""
"I knew your mother had investments. I didn't know the full structure.""
"Why didn't she tell you?""
He looked toward the window.
"Because she knew my brother.""
I frowned.
"What do you mean?""
Richard took a deep breath.
"Daniel had financial problems years ago. Your mother helped him once. He promised to repay her. When he didn't, she stopped trusting him with money.""
I looked at the document.
"So she kept everything separate.""
"Yes.""
He paused.
"Your mother was much smarter than either of us realized.""
I smiled faintly.
"She was.""
For a moment, we sat together in silence.
Then my father reached for the envelope.
"There is one thing I need you to understand.""
"What?""
"Whatever your mother left you, it belongs to you. Not Vanessa. Not Madison.
Not Daniel. And not me.""
I looked at him.
"Even if it's worth eighteen million?""
He nodded.
"Especially then.""
My eyes filled with tears.
I had spent so long feeling that I needed to prove I deserved space in that house.
Now I was learning that my mother had made sure I would never have to beg anyone for security.
But before I could say anything, my father's phone rang.
It was Patricia, our attorney.
He answered.
"Hello?""
Her voice was urgent.
"Richard, I just received a notification from the property company.""
"What happened?""
"The board has received an emergency request to transfer the controlling shares into a temporary management trust.""
My father stood.
"Who requested it?""
There was a pause.
Then Patricia answered.
"Someone has submitted a medical assessment claiming Nia is unable to make independent financial decisions.""
I felt my blood run cold.
My father looked at me.
"Who signed it?""
Patricia lowered her voice.
"According to the document, the examining physician was Dr. Samuel Hayes.""
I recognized the name immediately.
He was the family doctor who had treated me since childhood.
May you like
And the document carried a date from the previous week.
A week when I hadn't even seen him.
