Chapter 6: The Recording That Changed Everything

That evening, I sat in my father's study with the flash drive resting beside the laptop.
Madison had gone upstairs.
My father was standing by the window, making another call to Patricia.
I hadn't plugged in the drive yet.
Part of me was afraid of what I would hear.
The other part couldn't wait.
"Are you ready?"" my father asked.
I nodded.
He sat beside me.
I inserted the flash drive.
There were seven folders.
The first contained photographs.
The second contained bank statements.
The third contained emails.
The fourth was labeled FAMILY.
I clicked it.
Three video files appeared.
Their dates ranged across the previous six months.
I opened the first.
The screen showed Vanessa sitting at the dining-room table.
She was wearing a burgundy blouse.
The same one she had worn on the day my dress burned.
Daniel sat opposite her.
His voice was clear.
"Have you spoken to Richard?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"He's asking too many questions.""
Daniel leaned back.
"Then we need to move faster.""
She opened a folder.
"Madison says Nia is getting suspicious.""
Daniel laughed.
"Nia has no idea what we're doing.""
Vanessa lowered her voice.
"She's more observant than you think.""
Daniel waved his hand.
"She's twenty-two. She doesn't understand corporate structures or trust agreements.""
I felt my fingers tighten around the edge of the desk.
The video continued.
Vanessa opened a spreadsheet.
"Once the shares are transferred, we'll sell the commercial properties first.""
Daniel nodded.
"And the residential portfolio?""
"We'll divide it into separate investments. The money can go wherever we want.""
"Richard?""
Vanessa smiled.
"By then, he'll have no choice but to accept it.""
The video ended.
I sat completely still.
My father stared at the screen.
"She planned to sell your mother's company.""
I nodded.
But I wasn't ready to stop.
I opened the second recording.
This time, Vanessa was standing in the kitchen.
Madison was beside her.
"Mom, I don't think we should keep using Nia's name," Madison said.
Vanessa turned sharply.
"Lower your voice.""
"But what if Dad finds out?""
"Your father believes what he wants to believe.""
"What if Nia goes to the police?""
Vanessa placed a shopping bag on the counter.
"Then we'll make sure nobody believes her.""
Madison frowned.
"How?""
Vanessa leaned closer.
"She's emotional. She's always been emotional since her mother died. We have enough documentation to show that she struggles with decisions.""
Madison looked uncomfortable.
"That's not true.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Truth has very little to do with what people believe.""
My father slowly stood up.
I could see his hands trembling.
The video continued.
Madison asked:
"What about the dress?""
Vanessa looked irritated.
"Which dress?""
"The blue one.""
Vanessa shrugged.
"That was necessary.""
"Why?""
"Because your father needed to see how unreasonable Nia was becoming.""
Madison looked confused.
"How does burning her dress help?""
Vanessa smiled.
"People don't investigate financial problems when they're busy arguing about expensive clothes.""
The recording ended.
For several seconds, the room was silent.
Then my father whispered:
"She used your dress as a distraction.""
I stared at the screen.
The fire.
The shouting.
The handbag.
Every detail had been part of a plan.
I felt tears running down my face.
Not because I missed the dress.
But because Vanessa had looked me in the eyes while destroying something I had worked so hard for, knowing exactly why she was doing it.
My father placed his hand over mine.
"She will answer for this.""
I wiped my cheeks.
"Play the third recording.""
He hesitated.
"Are you sure?""
"Yes.""
I opened the final video.
The room was dim.
Daniel was sitting in what looked like his private office.
Vanessa was beside him.
A third person was present, but their face was outside the camera frame.
Daniel spoke first.
"The medical assessment is ready.""
Vanessa nodded.
"Good.""
"The company should approve the temporary administration within two weeks.""
"And the share transfer?""
"Once the administrator is appointed, we can proceed.""
The unidentified person spoke.
"What if Richard challenges it?""
Daniel laughed.
"Richard won't have time.""
Vanessa looked at him.
"What do you mean?""
Daniel leaned forward.
"There's another document.""
He pulled a sheet of paper from a folder.
"The company has outstanding liabilities. If Richard's construction firm is connected to the transactions, he could be personally investigated.""
Vanessa frowned.
"Are you saying he'll be blamed?""
Daniel nodded.
"That's the point.""
I looked at my father.
He was completely motionless.
The recording continued.
Vanessa asked:
"And if he refuses to cooperate?""
Daniel smiled.
"Then he can explain to the authorities why company funds were used to cover the missing money.""
My father slowly sat down.
I turned toward him.
"Dad?""
He didn't respond.
"What's wrong?""
He stared at the screen.
Then he whispered:
"They were preparing to frame me.""
I felt sick.
"Why would they do that?""
He rubbed his forehead.
"Because if I were under investigation, I wouldn't be able to challenge the transfer as easily.""
The unidentified person finally moved.
The camera captured part of their face.
I leaned closer.
It was a man.
He wore a gray suit and a silver watch.
I recognized him.
My father's accountant, James Collins.
I looked at my father.
"That's Mr. Collins.""
He nodded slowly.
The man in the video spoke again.
"The financial records are ready. Richard's signature is on the relevant approvals.""
Daniel smiled.
"Excellent.""
Vanessa looked relieved.
"Then we can finish this before the board meeting.""
My father stood so quickly that his chair rolled backward.
"James?""
I stared at him.
"What's happening?""
He took his phone and called the accountant.
The call went straight to voicemail.
He tried again.
No answer.
Then he opened his email.
A new message had arrived.
It was from James Collins.
The subject line read:
*Immediate Resignation — Confidential.*
My father opened it.
The message contained only three sentences.
Richard, I regret that I can no longer continue working with your company. Effective immediately, I resign from my position. Please direct all future financial inquiries to my replacement.
My father stared at the screen.
"He's running.""
I looked at the recording again.
There was no doubt.
James had been involved.
But was he the only one?
I copied the files onto my father's encrypted drive.
Then I sent the recordings to Patricia.
She called within minutes.
"Do not delete the originals," she said.
"We need to preserve the metadata.""
"Did you see the third recording?""
"Yes.""
"James Collins was there.""
Patricia paused.
"Richard, do you recognize the person speaking?""
My father nodded.
"He's my accountant.""
"Then we have a serious problem.""
She explained that the recordings could become important evidence, but their authenticity would need to be established.
She also told us not to confront anyone else until the files were secured.
My father agreed.
After the call, I went upstairs to find Madison.
She was sitting on the floor beside her suitcase.
Her phone was in her hand.
She looked up when I entered.
"Did you watch them?""
"Yes.""
She lowered her eyes.
"Everything?""
"Everything.""
She wiped her cheek.
"I didn't know about the plan to frame Dad.""
"But you knew about the money.""
She nodded.
I sat across from her.
"Why did you give me the flash drive?""
She looked at her hands.
"Because I heard Mom talking to Daniel yesterday.""
"What did they say?""
Madison swallowed.
"Mom said once the board approves the transfer, she'll send me away.""
I frowned.
"Send you where?""
"London. She said she'd arrange an apartment and give me enough money to start over.""
"Why would she send you away?""
Madison looked at me.
"Because she doesn't want anyone asking questions.""
I studied her face.
"Did she tell you how much money you'd receive?""
"Two million dollars.""
I stared at her.
Two million.
She had apparently been promised a fortune in exchange for keeping quiet.
"And you believed her?""
Madison started crying.
"At first.""
I waited.
She continued.
"Then I found the documents. I saw the signatures. I saw your mother's name. And I realized she was planning to take everything.""
I looked at her.
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?""
She shook her head.
"Because I was selfish.""
Her voice broke.
"I liked the clothes. I liked the trips. I liked having money without working for it. I knew you were saving, and I didn't care.""
I didn't know what to say.
Madison reached into her suitcase and removed a small envelope.
"There's something else.""
She handed it to me.
Inside was a photograph of my mother.
It was taken in front of a large office building.
On the back, in my mother's handwriting, were the words:
For Nia, when the time is right. Remember that your name is worth more than anything you can buy.
My throat tightened.
"Where did you find this?""
"In Mom's desk. Vanessa had kept a box of your mother's things.""
I looked at her.
"Why?""
"I don't know. But there's a key inside.""
She pointed to a small silver key taped to the photograph.
I removed it carefully.
It was attached to a tiny metal tag.
The tag had a number engraved on it.
*B-417.*
I turned it over.
There was another inscription.
*Elaine Carter — Private Archive.*
My heart started racing.
"Madison, where was this box?""
"In Vanessa's bedroom.""
I stood up.
"Did she know you took it?""
"I don't think so.""
I examined the key again.
My mother had apparently left something somewhere.
Something Vanessa had been keeping hidden.
I hurried downstairs.
My father was still in the study.
When he saw the key, he frowned.
"Where did you get that?""
"Madison found it in Vanessa's bedroom.""
He examined the metal tag.
Then his expression changed.
"I know this.""
"What is it?""
"Your mother had a private storage facility downtown. She used it for company records.""
I looked at him.
"Do you know the number?""
He nodded.
"B-417.""
I held the key tightly.
"Can we go there?""
He checked his watch.
"It's late. We'll go first thing tomorrow.""
I shook my head.
"Dad, if Vanessa knows Madison took this, she might try to get there first.""
He considered that.
Then he grabbed his jacket.
"You're right.""
We drove across town.
The storage facility was located behind a large commercial building, with security gates and a small reception office.
A woman behind the desk examined the key.
"Do you have identification?""
My father showed his driver's license.
I showed mine.
She checked the records.
Then she looked at me.
"You're listed as the authorized beneficiary.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"Can I access it?""
She nodded.
"Yes. Your mother left specific instructions.""
The employee escorted us through a long corridor.
We stopped outside a metal door marked B-417.
She unlocked it.
The door rolled upward.
Inside were several boxes, a locked filing cabinet, and a small wooden chest.
My father stepped forward.
"Elaine...""
He stopped speaking.
On top of the chest was a sealed envelope.
My name was written across it.
The handwriting was unmistakably my mother's.
I picked it up with trembling fingers.
There was a small note attached.
My darling Nia. If you're reading this, someone has tried to take what I left for you.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
And one final line made my blood run cold.
Before you trust anyone with your inheritance, you must learn the truth about the man who helped me create it.
I looked at my father.
"Who was she talking about?""
He stared at the letter.
Then his eyes moved toward the filing cabinet.
A small label had been attached to the front.
*DANIEL CARTER — ORIGINAL AGREEMENTS.*
My father stepped backward.
Because suddenly, the question wasn't why Uncle Daniel had helped Vanessa steal my inheritance.
May you like
It was why my mother had warned me about him years before she died.
And what she had discovered that made her hide the truth in a locked room.
