Chapter 2: The Money She Had No Right to Touch

Dad stared at the document in his hand.

He didn't open it immediately.

Instead, he looked at me.

"What is this, sweetheart?""

I swallowed.

"It's from my bank.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Marcus, don't let her confuse you. She's been having trouble managing money since she came back.""

Dad raised one hand.

"Don't.""

One word.

But it stopped her.

He unfolded the paper.

His eyes moved across the first few lines.

Then he stopped.

He read them again.

"What's this account number?""

My fingers tightened around my backpack strap.

"It's my savings account.""

He looked at me.

"I thought you closed that account.""

"I did. I mean, I thought I did.""

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"Marcus, this is ridiculous. Maya has no idea what she's looking at.""

Dad ignored her.

He continued reading.

The document was a bank statement showing a series of electronic withdrawals from an account that had once belonged to my mother.

My mother, Denise, had opened that account when I was eight.

She used to call it my "future fund.""

Every birthday, every Christmas, and every time she received a bonus at work, she deposited something into it.

After she died, Dad continued adding money whenever he could.

He never made a big deal about it.

He simply told me that one day, when I was ready, it would help me build a life of my own.

I had never been allowed to spend from it without talking to him.

And I hadn't touched it.

At least, I hadn't thought I had.

The first strange thing happened four months earlier.

I was trying to pay my tuition deposit when the bank app showed an unfamiliar transaction.

$2,500.

The withdrawal description said:

Electronic transfer — household support.

I called the bank.

The representative explained that the transaction had been authorized through a linked account.

I asked which account.

She gave me the last four digits.

I recognized them.

They belonged to the savings account Dad had helped me manage when I was younger.

I didn't understand.

So I visited the bank.

The employee printed several pages and asked me to verify my identity.

Then she showed me the account history.

There had been more withdrawals.

Not one.

Not two.

Seven.

I remember staring at the screen.

$500.

$1,200.

$2,500.

$3,000.

The transactions stretched across several months.

I couldn't understand how they had happened.

The account was supposed to be protected.

The employee explained that someone with authorized access had initiated the transfers.

I asked who.

She wouldn't give me the information over the phone.

I needed to submit a formal request.

I left the bank with a folder full of paperwork and a sick feeling in my stomach.

For days, I told myself there had to be an innocent explanation.

Maybe Dad had transferred the money.

Maybe it was a mistake.

Maybe Mom's old account had been connected to something else.

Then I saw Vanessa.

She was in the kitchen, opening a delivery package.

Inside was a designer handbag.

I recognized the brand because Mom had once shown me a similar one in a store window.

Vanessa noticed me looking.

"Beautiful, isn't it?""

I nodded.

"How much was it?""

She laughed.

"Don't worry about things you can't afford, Maya.""

I looked at the bag again.

Then at the bank statement in my backpack.

I didn't say anything.

That evening, I searched the account records again.

One of the withdrawals had occurred on the exact day Vanessa posted a photograph of a luxury shopping trip.

Another appeared two days before Brielle's birthday.

A third was dated the week Jordan bought a used sports car.

I couldn't prove where the money went.

But the timing made my stomach turn.

I printed everything.

I planned to show Dad.

Then Vanessa discovered the folder.

It happened on a Wednesday afternoon.

I came home from my shift and found her standing in my bedroom.

My drawers were open.

My desk was covered in papers.

"What are you doing?"" I asked.

She didn't turn around.

"Looking for something.""

"That's my room.""

"And this is my house.""

I stepped inside.

"Put my things down.""

She picked up the bank statement.

Her eyes moved across the page.

For half a second, her face went completely still.

Then she folded the paper.

"Where did you get this?""

"From the bank.""

She looked at me.

"Why are you digging into financial records you don't understand?""

"Those are my records.""

"Your father handles your finances.""

"Not anymore.""

Her mouth tightened.

She placed the paper on my desk.

"Listen carefully, Maya. You are making a very serious mistake.""

I stood my ground.

"What mistake?""

"You're accusing people without understanding what happened.""

"I'm asking questions.""

"And I'm telling you to stop.""

She stepped closer.

"Your father has enough stress. He doesn't need you creating problems.""

I looked at her.

"Then why are there withdrawals from my account?""

Her eyes narrowed.

"Ask your father.""

"I will.""

She smiled.

It wasn't a friendly smile.

"Then I suggest you make sure you understand the answer before you embarrass yourself.""

She walked out.

I waited until I heard her bedroom door close.

Then I checked my desk.

The folder was gone.

So was the original bank statement.

I searched my room for nearly an hour.

Nothing.

I considered calling Dad.

But he was traveling, and Vanessa had already warned me not to interfere with his work.

I hated that I was still afraid of upsetting him.

I hated that I was still asking permission to defend myself.

That night, I slept with my backpack beside my bed.

The following morning, I went back to the bank.

I requested a full transaction history and asked for copies of every authorization associated with the withdrawals.

The employee, a woman named Patricia, studied the records.

"Miss Bennett, do you recognize this email address?""

She turned the monitor toward me.

I shook my head.

"No.""

"What about this phone number?""

I read the last four digits.

Then my heart dropped.

It was Vanessa's number.

I leaned closer.

"Why is that attached to my account?""

Patricia lowered her voice.

"It appears this number was added as a contact for transaction notifications several years ago.""

"Who added it?""

"The records show an authorized account update. You'll need to request the original authorization documents.""

"Can you tell me when?""

Patricia clicked through several screens.

"Six months ago.""

Six months.

That was before I moved back home.

Before I started paying rent.

Before Vanessa began telling me that she was helping me become independent.

I asked Patricia to print the records.

She did.

Then she looked at me carefully.

"Do you know this person?""

I nodded.

"She's my stepmother.""

Patricia didn't say anything.

She simply placed the papers in an envelope.

"Keep copies somewhere safe.""

I did.

I made digital copies.

I emailed them to myself.

And I put the original documents in the inner pocket of my backpack.

That was the document I had handed Dad.

Now he was standing in the dining room, reading it.

"Vanessa," he said slowly.

"Why is your phone number attached to Maya's savings account?""

Vanessa's face hardened.

"I have no idea.""

Dad looked at the statement.

"Your number is listed as an authorized contact.""

"I told you, I don't know.""

"Then why does it appear on the account?""

"Marcus, this is a bank administrative issue. These things happen.""

I looked at her.

"Seven withdrawals happened, too.""

She snapped her head toward me.

"Nobody asked you.""

Dad placed the paper flat on the table.

"How much money was taken?""

I answered.

"Eleven thousand eight hundred dollars.""

Silence.

Jordan slowly lowered his phone.

Brielle looked at Vanessa.

Dad's voice became quieter.

"Eleven thousand eight hundred?""

I nodded.

"That's what the bank records show.""

He turned to Vanessa.

"Did you take money from my daughter's savings account?""

She let out a sharp breath.

"Of course not!""

"Then explain the transactions.""

"Marcus, I have access to household finances. You gave me access years ago.""

"Not to Denise's account.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"You're making it sound criminal. I was managing things for the family.""

Dad's expression changed.

"What family?""

She looked offended.

"Excuse me?""

"My daughter's savings account was never a family expense account.""

Vanessa placed both hands on the table.

"Do you know how much I have sacrificed for this family? I cook. I clean.

I manage the house. I take care of everything while you're traveling.""

Dad stared at her.

"That doesn't give you the right to take money from Maya.""

"I didn't take it!""

"Then where did it go?""

She hesitated.

Just long enough.

Dad noticed.

"Where did the eleven thousand eight hundred dollars go, Vanessa?""

She looked toward Jordan.

Then toward Brielle.

Both children avoided her eyes.

I felt something cold settle in my chest.

She was looking for help.

Not an explanation.

An escape.

"Some of that money went toward household expenses," she finally said.

Dad shook his head.

"Which expenses?""

"Groceries. Repairs. Bills.""

"Show me.""

Vanessa blinked.

"What?""

"Show me the invoices. The receipts. The payments.""

She folded her arms again.

"You don't trust me?""

Dad's eyes remained fixed on hers.

"Right now? No.""

She looked as though he had slapped her.

I had never heard him say that before.

Not to anyone.

Not even when he was angry.

Vanessa reached for the papers.

Dad pulled them away.

"Don't touch those.""

Then he turned to me.

"Maya, sweetheart, why didn't you tell me sooner?""

I tried to answer.

But the words caught in my throat.

Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.

"Oh, here we go. Now I'm the villain because she couldn't manage her money.""

Dad turned sharply.

"Stop blaming her.""

"I'm telling the truth!""

"Then tell me why you hid these transactions.""

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Then she said something I wasn't expecting.

"Because Denise's account was supposed to be closed.""

My entire body went cold.

Dad stopped moving.

"What did you just say?""

Vanessa looked at the statement.

Then at me.

"I said I thought the account was inactive.""

Dad's face lost its color.

"How do you know what Denise's account was supposed to be?""

Vanessa swallowed.

And in that moment, I realized she knew much more about my mother's savings than she had ever admitted.

Dad slowly pulled out a chair.

"Vanessa, sit down.""

She didn't move.

He pointed at the chair.

"Now.""

For the first time, my stepmother looked genuinely uncertain.

And then Dad asked the question that changed everything.

"How long have you had access to my daughter's account?""

Vanessa stared at him.

"Marcus, I can explain.""

"Then explain.""

She glanced toward the hallway.

May you like

And whispered:

"Before you married me.""
