Chapter 7: The Person My Mother Was Trying to Protect Me From

"To protect Maya from someone inside her own family.""

Daniel's words remained in the air long after the call ended.

Dad stood beside the kitchen counter, staring at the phone.

I was still holding the bank document with Ethan Cole's name printed across the top.

Someone inside my own family.

I looked at Dad.

"Who was Mom afraid of?""

He didn't answer.

"Was it you?""

His head snapped toward me.

"No.""

The answer came immediately.

But I saw something else in his expression.

Confusion.

And something that looked painfully close to guilt.

"Dad?""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Your mother and I had disagreements, Maya. Every couple does. But I never wanted to hurt her.""

"Then why would she create a trust to protect me from someone in the family?""

Dad pulled out a chair.

"I don't know.""

I sat opposite him.

For a moment, we listened to the refrigerator humming.

Then Dad said something I hadn't expected.

"Your mother had an older brother.""

I blinked.

"Uncle Robert?""

He nodded.

I remembered Robert Bennett vaguely.

He had attended my seventh birthday party and given me a stuffed rabbit. After Mom died, I never saw him again.

Dad continued.

"He and Denise had a difficult relationship. They stopped speaking several years before she passed away.""

"Why?""

"Money.""

I frowned.

"What kind of money?""

"Your grandparents owned a small commercial property in North Carolina. Your mother inherited part of it. Robert believed he deserved a larger share.""

I stared at him.

"Did he take her money?""

Dad shook his head.

"Not that I know of. But there were arguments. Your mother once told me she was worried he might try to interfere with your inheritance.""

I thought about the trust document.

The amendments.

The missing account.

"Was Robert connected to Vanessa?""

Dad hesitated.

"I don't know.""

My phone vibrated.

A new email had arrived from Daniel.

It contained a scanned copy of an older legal document.

I opened it.

The heading read:

*ORIGINAL FAMILY PROTECTION TRUST — DENISE BENNETT.*

Below it were three names.

Denise Bennett.

Ethan Cole.

Robert Bennett.

I read the document twice.

"Why is Uncle Robert listed?""

Dad leaned over.

His face changed.

"That's not right.""

"What?""

"Robert wasn't supposed to have anything to do with Denise's trust.""

I scrolled farther.

The original agreement stated that the property and insurance proceeds were to remain protected until I reached twenty-one.

It also included a clause preventing the trustee from transferring ownership to a family member without independent legal approval.

Then I saw the signature section.

Ethan Cole had signed as the original financial adviser.

Robert Bennett had signed as a witness.

I looked at Dad.

"Uncle Robert knew about the trust.""

Dad nodded slowly.

"Apparently.""

"Did he know about the money?""

"I don't know.""

I leaned back.

Eight years of silence.

Eight years of missing money.

And suddenly, the uncle I barely remembered was appearing in documents connected to everything Vanessa had hidden.

Daniel arrived at our house that afternoon.

He brought a thick folder and asked Dad to sit with him in the living room.

I sat nearby.

Daniel opened the documents.

"There's something I want both of you to understand before we proceed.""

Dad nodded.

"Go ahead.""

"Vanessa was appointed trustee shortly after Denise's death. However, the original agreement included restrictions. She couldn't freely spend the funds, sell the property, or change the beneficiary.""

I looked at him.

"Then how did she withdraw the money?""

"That's the question.""

He placed another document on the table.

"This is the first amendment.""

It was dated eighteen months after Mom died.

The amendment changed the way the trust was administered.

Under the new arrangement, the trustee could make certain expenditures for the beneficiary's education, housing, and welfare.

Dad frowned.

"That sounds reasonable.""

Daniel nodded.

"On its own, it might be. But look at the next page.""

He pointed to a section authorizing transfers to a secondary management account.

The account was listed under a company called Cole Financial Services.

I recognized the name.

It was the same company Vanessa had once mentioned when explaining how she knew my mother.

"That's her old workplace," I said.

Daniel nodded.

"And Ethan was associated with it.""

Dad leaned forward.

"So Vanessa transferred Maya's money into a company account?""

"Some of it.""

"How much?""

Daniel opened the transaction summary.

"Thirty-eight thousand eight hundred dollars was removed from the original custodial account. The records show that a substantial portion went through the secondary management account.""

I stared at the page.

"And the remaining twenty-nine thousand?""

"That appears to have been transferred into the account associated with your mother's name.""

Dad rubbed his face.

"Who controlled it?""

"We're still investigating.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Could Vanessa and Ethan have been working together?""

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

"That's a possibility. But we need evidence.""

Dad pointed to the second amendment.

"What about this one?""

Daniel turned the page.

The amendment had been filed three years after Mom's death.

It extended the trustee's authority over the property.

It also changed the age at which the property would be transferred to me.

Instead of twenty-one, the new date was twenty-five.

I stared.

"Why would anyone change that?""

Daniel looked at Dad.

"That's one of the reasons we're challenging the amendment.""

Dad shook his head.

"She had no right to do that.""

"Correct. Not without satisfying the conditions in the original agreement.""

Daniel placed a magnified copy of the signature page on the table.

"There's another issue.""

I leaned closer.

The signature looked like Vanessa's.

But the date was written in a different hand.

Daniel pointed to the witness line.

"Robert Bennett.""

Dad stood.

"Robert signed this?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"We need to ask him.""

Dad paced across the living room.

"I haven't spoken to my brother in almost ten years.""

I looked at him.

"Why did you stop talking?""

He stopped.

For a moment, I thought he wouldn't answer.

Then he said, "After your mother died, Robert came to me asking about her estate. He believed I was keeping money that belonged to him.""

"Did you?""

"No.""

Dad looked directly at me.

"Your mother left everything according to her wishes. I followed the instructions in her will.""

"Then what happened?""

"He accused me of manipulating Denise while she was sick. We argued. I told him never to come back.""

I sat quietly.

It was strange discovering that the adults in my life had been carrying entire histories I knew nothing about.

Daniel closed the folder.

"I recommend that we contact Robert through legal counsel. We also need to preserve all records connected to the trust.""

Dad nodded.

Then he asked the question I had been thinking about.

"Where is Vanessa now?""

I checked my phone.

She hadn't contacted me since the previous night.

Dad called her.

No answer.

He tried again.

Still nothing.

Then Jordan sent a message.

Dad, Mom left the house. She said she's staying with Uncle Ethan.

I showed Dad.

He looked at Daniel.

"That's convenient.""

Daniel nodded.

"Do not go looking for her. We'll handle communication through the appropriate channels.""

Dad sat down.

"Fine.""

But my phone vibrated again.

This time, it was a number I didn't recognize.

This is Robert Bennett. I need to speak with Maya. Your mother left something else for you, and Vanessa doesn't know I still have it.

I read the message aloud.

Dad stood so quickly that his chair scraped the floor.

"Absolutely not.""

I looked at him.

"He's my uncle.""

"He's also the man who helped sign those amendments.""

Daniel held up a hand.

"Let's not jump to conclusions.""

Dad shook his head.

"Robert has been involved in this mess for years.""

Another message arrived.

Don't trust Ethan. He knows what happened to the property.

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

Meet me tomorrow at the old Bennett property office in Raleigh. Come with your father if you want. But bring the original blue letter.

Dad read it.

He looked at Daniel.

"What do you think?""

Daniel considered the message.

"If you choose to meet him, we'll arrange a controlled meeting. No private conversations, no signing documents, and no handing over originals.""

I looked at Dad.

"Can we go?""

He hesitated.

Then he took my hand.

"We'll go together.""

The following morning, we drove to Raleigh.

The old Bennett property office was located in a small brick building near a row of local businesses.

It looked abandoned from the outside.

A faded sign hung above the door.

Inside, dust covered the front desk.

A man stood near the window.

He was older than Dad, with gray hair, a dark coat, and tired eyes.

When he turned around, I recognized him immediately.

Uncle Robert.

He stared at me.

"Maya?""

I nodded.

He took a step forward.

"You're Denise's little girl.""

Dad moved beside me.

"Don't.""

Robert stopped.

His eyes shifted toward Dad.

"Marcus.""

"Robert.""

There was no warmth between them.

Daniel introduced himself and explained that the meeting was being documented.

Robert nodded.

Then he looked at me again.

"I've wanted to speak to you for a long time.""

"Why didn't you?""

He looked down.

"Because I was ashamed.""

Dad let out a bitter laugh.

"That's convenient.""

Robert ignored him.

He reached into his coat and removed a small black folder.

"Your mother gave me this two months before she died.""

I stared at it.

"What's inside?""

"Copies of the original property deed, the insurance documents, and a letter.""

My heartbeat quickened.

"Another letter?""

Robert nodded.

"She told me to keep it until you turned eighteen. She also told me not to give it to your father unless he asked.""

Dad frowned.

"Why?""

Robert looked at him.

"Because Denise believed someone close to you was already interfering with her finances.""

Dad's expression hardened.

"Who?""

Robert opened the folder.

He removed a photograph.

It showed Mom standing beside a younger woman.

I recognized Mom immediately.

The other woman was Vanessa.

But there was something else in the photograph.

A third person stood behind them.

A young man wearing a dark suit.

Robert pointed to him.

"Ethan Cole.""

I looked at the picture.

"How did Mom know him?""

Robert's voice dropped.

"Because Ethan was the person who introduced Vanessa to your mother.""

Dad went still.

Robert continued.

"And he wasn't just a financial adviser. He was also the person who originally tried to buy your mother's property.""

I looked at the photograph again.

Then I noticed the date printed on the back.

It was from eight years before Mom died.

Long before Vanessa married Dad.

Long before the missing money.

Long before I ever suspected anything was wrong.

Robert looked at me.

"Your mother discovered something about Ethan and Vanessa.""

"What?""

He opened the folder and removed a final document.

"That they had already been transferring money out of the family property account.""

Dad grabbed the edge of the table.

"How much?""

Robert looked at him.

"Enough for Denise to realize that the money she had saved for Maya wasn't safe.""

Then he turned to me.

"There's one more thing your mother wanted you to know.""

He placed the document in front of me.

May you like

And as I read the name at the bottom, I realized the person who had helped Vanessa take my inheritance was someone I had known my entire life.

It was my father's signature.
