Chapter 2: The Voice Nobody Was Supposed to Hear

Dad caught Vanessa's arm before she reached the speaker.
“Don't touch it,” he said.
His voice had changed.
It wasn't loud anymore.
That frightened me more than his shouting.
Vanessa pulled her arm away.
“Daniel, you're misunderstanding something.””
He stared at her.
“Then explain it.””
She looked at the speaker.
Then at Grandma.
Then at me.
“This is absurd. Evelyn has never liked me. She's been waiting for an opportunity to turn you against me.””
Grandma didn't react.
She simply reached for the speaker and tapped the playback control.
The recording resumed.
A faint clinking sound came first, followed by Vanessa's voice.
“Once Maya leaves, I can finally get rid of the rest of Rachel's things.””
Dad's shoulders stiffened.
Vanessa's recorded voice continued.
“I don't understand why you insist on keeping that notebook. Rachel is gone. Maya needs to accept that this is my house now.””
There was a pause.
Then another voice answered.
It was quieter, but recognizable.
A man's voice.
“Vanessa, you promised we wouldn't do anything until Daniel signed the papers.””
My father's face went completely blank.
“Who is that?”” he asked.
Vanessa stepped backward.
“It's nothing.””
Grandma turned toward her.
“Nothing?””
“It's a private conversation.””
Dad looked at her.
“With whom?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“I don't remember.””
The recording continued.
The man's voice came through again.
“You said the girl would be staying with Evelyn by the end of the month. You said Daniel was ready to sign.””
Vanessa's voice became impatient.
“He will sign. He trusts me.””
My father stared at her.
“What papers?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
The recording crackled.
Then the man's voice said something that made Grandma's expression harden.
“What about Rachel's insurance money?””
I felt my stomach twist.
Dad stepped closer to the speaker.
“What insurance money?””
Vanessa rushed forward.
“Turn that thing off!””
Dad didn't move.
The man's voice continued.
“You told me there was enough left to cover the deposit. If the money is still tied up, I need to know.””
Vanessa spoke quickly.
“It's not tied up. Daniel just doesn't know how much is left.””
The speaker chimed as the recording ended.
For several seconds, the only sound in the kitchen was the refrigerator humming.
I looked at Dad.
He seemed unable to understand what he had just heard.
Then he turned toward Vanessa.
“Who were you talking to?””
She shook her head.
“I don't know.””
“You said you trusted me. You said I would sign something.””
“Daniel, listen—”
“What papers?””
Vanessa rubbed her forehead.
“You're taking a conversation out of context.””
“What insurance money?””
Her eyes shifted toward me.
That was when I understood something.
She wasn't afraid because Dad had discovered she lied about the wine.
She was afraid because the recording had exposed something much bigger.
Something involving my mother.
I stepped closer to the island.
“Dad?””
He didn't look at me.
“Not now, Maya.””
I stopped.
Grandma immediately moved beside me.
“She's allowed to ask a question,” she said.
Dad closed his eyes.
I took a breath.
“What insurance money?””
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“Sweetheart, this has nothing to do with you.””
“Then why were you talking about Mom?””
Her expression hardened.
“Because your mother is dead, Maya. And we cannot keep living in the past.””
Grandma placed a hand on my shoulder.
“Be careful, Vanessa.””
“What? Are we pretending Rachel was perfect now?””
Dad's head snapped up.
“Don't.””
Vanessa seemed to realize she had gone too far.
She softened her voice.
“Daniel, I loved Rachel. I did everything I could to help you after she died.””
“You told me there was no insurance money.””
“I said there wasn't enough to change anything.””
“You told me the policy had expired.””
Vanessa looked away.
Grandma slowly pulled out a chair.
“Daniel, sit down.””
He didn't.
Instead, he walked toward the speaker and looked at it as if he wanted to pull every word back out of the device.
“Play the rest.””
Grandma shook her head.
“That was the end of the saved clip.””
“Can you get more?””
“I don't know. I need to check the device.””
Vanessa seized the opportunity.
“Exactly. You don't know what you're doing. This recording could be edited. Someone could have made it sound like something else.””
Grandma looked at her.
“You're welcome to explain what we heard.””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“I was talking about household finances. That's all.””
“And the man?”” Dad asked.
She hesitated.
“A financial adviser.””
“What's his name?””
“Mark.””
Dad stared at her.
“Mark who?””
Vanessa's lips parted.
Nothing came out.
Grandma quietly reached for the stained notebook.
“There's another reason we need to be careful.””
She turned the notebook over.
The leather cover was warped from the wine. A small brass clasp had come loose, revealing a narrow pocket hidden beneath the inside cover.
I recognized it immediately.
My mother used to tuck folded notes in there.
“Grandma,” I whispered.
She carefully opened the pocket.
A small white envelope slipped onto the counter.
My heart began beating faster.
I had never seen it before.
Grandma picked it up.
On the front, in my mother's handwriting, were four words.
*For Maya. When she's ready.*
I reached for it.
But Grandma gently stopped my hand.
“Wait, sweetheart.””
“Why?””
“Because I think your mother knew there were things you weren't supposed to find until you were older.””
Dad stared at the envelope.
His face had gone pale again.
“Evelyn, did you know about this?””
Grandma looked at him for a long moment.
“I knew Rachel was worried.””
“About what?””
She glanced at Vanessa.
“About the person she had allowed into her home.””
Vanessa slammed her palm against the counter.
“That's enough!””
The wineglass beside her toppled.
It struck the floor and shattered.
I jumped.
Vanessa didn't even look down.
“I'm not going to stand here while you all accuse me of stealing from a dead woman.””
Dad's voice was low.
“Then don't.””
She stared at him.
“What?””
“Tell me the truth.””
For the first time since she entered our lives, Vanessa looked genuinely cornered.
She reached into her purse.
“I need my phone.””
Dad didn't move.
“Why?””
“I'm calling my attorney.””
Grandma nodded calmly.
“That's probably a good idea.””
Vanessa turned toward the hallway.
But before she could leave, the smart speaker chimed again.
A notification appeared on its connected display.
*Saved audio recovered: 3 additional recordings.*
Grandma looked at the screen.
Dad looked at Vanessa.
And Vanessa whispered something I would never forget.
“No. Not those.””
Grandma pressed the screen.
The first recovered recording began.
A door closed.
A chair scraped across the floor.
Then my mother's voice filled the kitchen.
“Vanessa, I know what you did.””
I stopped breathing.
Dad grabbed the edge of the island.
May you like
Because my mother had been dead for almost three years.
And the recording was dated six days before she died.
