Chapter 7: The Child My Mother Never Told Us About

“It says your mother had another child.””

Dad's words hung in the kitchen.

I looked at the medical document in his hands.

Another child?

I was twelve. I had spent my entire life believing I was an only child. Mom used to tell me stories about when she was pregnant with me, how Dad cried when he first held me, and how she had imagined having a house full of children.

But there had never been another baby.

At least, not one I knew about.

Dad looked at Grandma.

“Evelyn, tell me this isn't true.””

Grandma's eyes filled.

“It's more complicated than that.””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Of course it is. Everything Rachel did was complicated. She spent years keeping secrets and expecting everyone else to clean up the mess.””

Dad turned toward her.

“Be quiet.””

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

Marcus pulled another document from his folder.

“This is an original hospital record. It confirms Rachel delivered a second child several years before Maya was born.””

Dad stared at the page.

“Where is the child?””

Marcus shrugged.

“That's what I've been trying to establish.””

Grandma stood between him and the table.

“You have no right to be here.””

Marcus gave a short laugh.

“Evelyn, you should be the last person telling me about rights. You knew about the child.””

Dad turned so quickly that his chair scraped across the floor.

“Mom?””

Grandma closed her eyes.

I felt my fingers go cold.

“Grandma, is it true?””

She looked at me.

“Yes, sweetheart. But listen to me. Your mother never stopped loving you. Nothing about this changes that.””

“Who is the baby?””

Grandma took a shaky breath.

“Her name was Lily.””

Dad lowered himself into the chair.

“Lily?””

“She was born before you and Rachel married.””

The room became silent.

Dad stared at the document.

“How old would she be?””

“Seventeen.””

I was twelve.

That meant I had a sister who was five years older than me.

A sister who had existed somewhere in the world while I was growing up.

“Where is she?”” I asked.

Grandma looked down.

“Rachel made an arrangement for her to be raised by another family.””

“Why?””

Marcus answered before Grandma could.

“Because Rachel didn't want the child interfering with her future.””

Grandma's eyes flashed.

“That's a lie.””

Marcus raised his hands.

“I'm only reading what the records suggest.””

“You're twisting them.””

Dad looked between them.

“Someone explain what happened.””

Grandma sat down.

“Rachel was eighteen when she became pregnant with Lily. The baby's father left before she was born. Rachel was young, frightened, and struggling financially. She made an adoption arrangement with a family she trusted.””

Dad looked stunned.

“Why didn't she tell me?””

“Because the adoption happened before she met you.””

He stared at her.

“But she told me everything about her past.””

Grandma nodded sadly.

“Not everything.””

I swallowed.

“Did Mom ever see Lily again?””

Grandma's eyes filled completely.

“Yes.””

My heart jumped.

“When?””

“Several times. Rachel kept photographs and letters. She watched her grow up from a distance because Lily's adoptive parents wanted privacy.””

Dad put his hands over his face.

“Why did Vanessa know about this?””

Grandma looked at Marcus.

“Because she found the correspondence.””

Vanessa laughed.

“I found the records while organizing Rachel's belongings. I was the one who discovered the truth.””

Grandma shook her head.

“You discovered the truth and used it.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“I used nothing.””

“You contacted Lily's adoptive family.””

Dad looked up.

“What?””

Grandma continued.

“Vanessa found their address and contacted them. She told them Rachel had left behind a financial arrangement that could affect Lily's inheritance.””

Marcus interrupted.

“That isn't relevant.””

“It is very relevant,” Grandma replied.

“Because Rachel had arranged for Lily to receive a separate inheritance. Vanessa wanted access to that information.””

Dad looked at his wife.

“Were you trying to contact Lily?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Someone had to establish what Rachel had left behind.””

“You told me there was no money!””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what? My wife's daughter?””

Vanessa's voice rose.

“From another family coming into our lives and demanding money! You have no idea what Rachel left behind!””

I looked at her.

“She's my sister.””

Vanessa turned toward me.

“She's a stranger, Maya.””

I felt tears burn behind my eyes.

“She's still my sister.””

Grandma reached for my hand.

“That's right, sweetheart.””

Marcus closed his folder.

“This conversation is getting us nowhere.””

Laura Bennett, who had been quietly observing the confrontation, finally stepped forward.

“Actually, it is.””

She placed her phone on the table.

“I've been documenting everything said here. Mr. Bell, you were informed not to enter this property or contact the family without counsel present.””

Marcus looked at her.

“I'm not under arrest.””

“Your legal status isn't the issue. Your involvement in these financial documents is.””

She turned toward Vanessa.

“And neither is your marital status relevant to whether you have permission to enter this house.””

Vanessa glared.

“You can't throw me out.””

Dad finally stood.

“Yes, I can ask you to leave.””

He looked at Marcus.

“And you can take your folder with you.””

Marcus didn't move.

Instead, he reached inside his jacket and removed a photograph.

He placed it on the island.

It showed my mother holding a newborn baby.

Her face was younger, her hair was longer, and she was smiling in a way I hadn't seen in years.

On the back was a handwritten message.

To my Lily. No matter where life takes you, you will always have a place in my heart.

I picked up the photograph.

“That's Mom.””

Grandma nodded.

“Yes.””

“That's Lily?””

“Yes.””

I traced the baby's tiny hand with my finger.

“Why didn't she tell me?””

Grandma's voice trembled.

“She wanted to. She planned to tell you when you were old enough to understand.””

“Then why didn't she?””

Grandma looked toward the medical document.

“Because she became afraid someone would use Lily's identity to get access to the inheritance.””

Dad looked at Vanessa.

“Is that why you were trying to get rid of Maya?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“Is that why you wanted her sent to Evelyn's?””

“I wanted to establish some boundaries.””

Dad laughed bitterly.

“You tried to send my daughter away while secretly searching for another daughter's inheritance.””

Vanessa's face turned red.

“I was the one who stayed with you when Rachel died!””

“And apparently you were the one stealing from her while she was alive.””

Marcus suddenly stepped toward the door.

Laura raised her hand.

“Mr. Bell, wait.””

He stopped.

A second later, two investigators entered the house.

One approached Marcus.

The other approached Vanessa.

“Ms. Carter, we'd like you to accompany us for questioning regarding the financial records and the communications we've recovered.””

Vanessa's face changed.

“You can't be serious.””

“We have a warrant for the electronic devices and documents identified in the investigation.””

She looked at Dad.

“Daniel, tell them this is a mistake.””

He didn't answer.

Marcus tried to speak.

“I want my attorney.””

“You'll have the opportunity to contact one.””

As the investigators began collecting the folder, a small photograph slipped from between its pages.

It landed near my feet.

I picked it up.

It showed a teenage girl standing outside a school.

She had dark curly hair and a familiar smile.

On the back were four words.

*Lily Carter. Senior Year.*

I looked at Grandma.

“Is that really her?””

Grandma nodded.

I held the photograph against my chest.

Then I noticed something written in the lower corner.

A phone number.

And beneath it, in my mother's handwriting:

*If Maya ever asks, let them meet.*

I looked up.

“Grandma, do you know where Lily lives?””

Grandma's expression softened.

“I do.””

“Can we find her?””

She nodded.

“But there's something you need to understand first. Lily may not know everything about Rachel. And she may not be ready to meet us.””

I looked at the photograph again.

For the first time that evening, I wasn't thinking about Vanessa.

I was thinking about a girl who had lost the same mother I had.

A girl who might have spent seventeen years wondering why her birth mother had never come looking for her.

Then Grandma quietly said:

“There's one more thing Rachel told me about Lily.””

Dad turned.

“What?””

Grandma looked at the investigators.

Then at Laura.

May you like

And finally at me.

“Lily knows something about what happened during your mother's final hospital admission.””
