Chapter 6: The Money That Disappeared Before I Knew It Existed
My father didn't move.
Neither did I.
Vanessa stood beside her suitcase, one hand gripping a folded sweater. Her phone lay faceup on the carpet, and Patricia's voice was still coming through the speaker.
"Vanessa? Are you there?""
Richard picked up the phone.
"Patricia.""
There was a sharp silence.
Then her voice changed.
"Richard. What are you doing?""
"That's what I'd like to ask you.""
He ended the call.
Vanessa's face had gone pale.
"Give me my phone.""
My father held it out of reach.
"Why are you packing?""
"I'm going to stay with Mom.""
"Why?""
"Because I don't want to be here.""
"That's not an answer.""
She grabbed a pair of shoes and shoved them into the suitcase.
"You're treating us like criminals.""
Richard looked at the open wardrobe.
"Then tell me why your mother said we need to leave before I discover what happened to Danielle's inheritance.""
Vanessa's hands stopped.
I stepped forward.
"What happened to my inheritance?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
"Your mother just said it.""
"I wasn't listening!""
I stared at her.
"You were literally talking to her.""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"Why do you always have to be involved in everything?""
I felt my anger rising.
"Because it's my money!""
My father placed the phone on the dresser.
"Vanessa, sit down.""
She remained standing.
"Please.""
There was something in his voice that made her finally lower herself onto the edge of the bed.
I stood beside the door.
Richard pulled out a chair.
"Start from the beginning.""
Vanessa stared at her hands.
"I don't know what you're talking about.""
"Your uncle's name has appeared in documents connected to Danielle's trust. Your mother mentioned money disappearing. I want to know what you know.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Uncle Daniel just helped Mom with some financial stuff.""
"What financial stuff?""
"Business things.""
"Which business?""
She hesitated.
Then she said, "The boutique.""
I frowned.
"What boutique?""
Vanessa looked toward me.
"Mom and Uncle Daniel started an online fashion business.""
My father frowned.
"When?""
"With what money?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
"Was it my mother's money?""
"No!""
Her response came too quickly.
Richard remained calm.
"Then whose money was it?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"Mom said she had savings.""
My father looked at her.
"Did you ever see bank statements?""
"No.""
"Did you receive payments from the business?""
She nodded slightly.
"Sometimes.""
"How much?""
"I don't know.""
"Vanessa.""
She rubbed her palms against her trousers.
"Maybe twelve thousand dollars.""
I stared at her.
"Twelve thousand?""
"It was for modeling, social media, and helping with promotions.""
I almost laughed.
"You're telling me you were paid twelve thousand dollars to post pictures of clothes?""
Vanessa glared at me.
"You don't know anything about business.""
My father interrupted.
"Where did the money come from?""
She lowered her eyes.
"I don't know.""
Richard stood.
"All right. Martin needs to know about this.""
Vanessa suddenly grabbed his sleeve.
"Please don't.""
He looked down at her hand.
"Why?""
"Because Mom said it was temporary.""
"What's temporary?""
She began crying.
"She said she borrowed money from somewhere and would replace it before anyone noticed.""
My chest tightened.
"Borrowed from where?""
Vanessa wiped her face.
"She wouldn't tell me.""
I looked at my father.
He was completely still.
"How much?"" he asked.
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know.""
"Guess.""
"Maybe fifty thousand.""
My father closed his eyes.
"Fifty thousand dollars?""
"Maybe more.""
I sat down.
It felt as if the room were slowly spinning.
The inheritance my mother had left me was supposed to be protected.
But while I was attending classes, working weekends, and saving money for a graduation dress, someone might have been moving pieces of my future around without my knowledge.
"Did you know they were using my name?"" I asked.
Vanessa looked at me.
"What?""
"The paperwork. Did you know they were pretending I had agreed to give Patricia access to my trust?""
She shook her head.
"No.""
"Did you know they were trying to take control of the money?""
"I didn't know about the signature.""
"But you knew about the business.""
She looked down.
"Yes.""
I waited.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Her answer came quietly.
"Because Mom told me it wasn't your business.""
I stared at her.
"It was my money.""
She started crying harder.
My father moved toward the door.
"Danielle, stay here with Vanessa. I'm calling Martin.""
He stepped into the hallway.
Vanessa looked at me.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she said, "You think I wanted all this?""
I looked at her.
"You burned my graduation dress.""
She shook her head.
"That was different.""
"How?""
"Because I was angry.""
"At me?""
"At everyone!""
I waited.
She looked toward the window.
"Mom kept telling me you were going to leave us behind. That once you got your inheritance, you'd move out, buy a house, and never look back.""
I frowned.
"So?""
"So she said Dad would spend everything on you. She said there would be nothing left for me.""
I stared at her.
"That's what she told you?""
Vanessa nodded.
"She said you were going to get everything because your mother planned for you, and I was going to be left with nothing.""
I almost felt sorry for her.
Almost.
Then I remembered the flames.
The empty hanger.
The way she had smiled while my dress burned.
"Vanessa, you already had a life. You had opportunities. You had a father who paid your tuition and a mother who gave you everything she could.""
"That's not the same.""
"You're right. It's not. Because I didn't have my mother.""
She looked away.
For the first time, she didn't have an answer.
My father returned with his phone.
"Martin wants us to preserve everything. Nobody touches those suitcases or documents.""
Vanessa stood.
"Am I not allowed to leave?""
"You can leave the house if you want. But you cannot take anything that belongs to Danielle or remove records connected to the business.""
Vanessa looked horrified.
"You're going to search my things?""
"No. But if there are documents relevant to a financial investigation, they need to be preserved properly.""
He looked at me.
"Let's go downstairs.""
We left Vanessa in her room.
In the home office, Martin joined us by video call.
He listened carefully while my father explained what Vanessa had revealed.
When Richard finished, Martin leaned closer to the camera.
"There's a possibility that the boutique was financed through funds connected to the trust. We need to verify that before making any accusations.""
"Can you trace it?"" my father asked.
"We can request the relevant records through the appropriate legal channels. But I need something else first.""
"What?""
"The original trust statements.""
My father opened a secure cabinet.
He removed a black folder and began checking the pages.
After several minutes, he stopped.
"That's strange.""
"What?"" I asked.
He pointed to a statement.
There was an entry for a transfer of $48,500.
The transaction was dated eleven months earlier.
The destination account was listed as a business investment account.
My name appeared in the transaction description.
But the account number didn't belong to my trust.
Martin studied the document.
"Richard, that transfer was not authorized under the trust agreement.""
My father looked at me.
"How could they move money?""
Martin shook his head.
"We don't know yet. The transfer may have originated from an associated account or a separate source. We need the full banking records.""
I stared at the number.
Forty-eight thousand five hundred dollars.
I had never seen that money.
I had never authorized it.
And I had certainly never invested in a boutique.
Martin asked us to send the statement.
My father photographed each page.
Then he stopped at another entry.
This one was for $21,000.
The destination account was different.
And the recipient's name was Daniel Carter.
My father sat back.
"That's her brother.""
Martin nodded.
"Yes.""
I felt sick.
"How much altogether?""
Martin reviewed the visible entries.
"From these statements alone, we're looking at more than sixty-nine thousand dollars in questionable transactions. But this may not represent the full amount.""
My father stared at the screen.
"Can you freeze the accounts?""
"We can request urgent protective measures where legally available. I will contact the financial institution today.""
The call ended.
My father leaned back in his chair.
He looked exhausted.
"Danielle, I'm sorry.""
I shook my head.
"You didn't do this.""
"But I brought Patricia into our home. I trusted her.""
I sat beside him.
"You couldn't have known everything.""
He looked at me.
"I should have noticed how she treated you.""
I didn't argue.
Because there were years I wanted to tell him about.
Years of small humiliations.
The birthday presents Vanessa opened before I could see them.
The family vacations I was told were too expensive for an extra person.
The clothes Patricia donated without asking.
The times she told me that my mother's things were taking up too much space.
I had swallowed all of it because I didn't want my father to lose another marriage.
Now I understood how expensive silence could become.
That evening, Martin called again.
He had reviewed additional records and discovered that the boutique's business account had been closed three months earlier.
The remaining balance had been transferred to another company.
A company registered under a different name.
But there was something more troubling.
The registered business address was a commercial property in another state.
And the person listed as its authorized manager was Vanessa.
My father looked at me.
"Vanessa?""
I couldn't speak.
Martin continued.
"We also found a payment from that company to a luxury real estate agency. It appears someone may have used business funds toward a property deposit.""
My father frowned.
"Whose property?""
Martin paused.
Then he gave us the address.
My father immediately recognized it.
It was a townhouse in Atlanta.
The same townhouse Patricia had been telling everyone she planned to purchase after Vanessa's wedding.
I stared at the screen.
"Was my money used to buy it?""
"We can't establish that yet," Martin replied.
"But the payment trail is suspicious enough to investigate.""
My father thanked him and ended the call.
For several minutes, we sat without speaking.
Then I remembered something.
"Vanessa said Mom told her we needed to leave before you discovered the rest of my inheritance.""
Richard nodded.
"Yes.""
"Do you think Patricia knew we found the statements?""
He looked toward the hallway.
"I think she knows more than she's admitting.""
As if summoned by the conversation, the front door opened.
Patricia walked inside carrying a handbag.
She looked at my father.
Then at me.
Her eyes immediately narrowed.
"Why are you both sitting in here?""
Richard stood.
"We need to talk.""
Patricia placed her handbag on the entry table.
"Not tonight. I'm tired.""
"Where is Daniel?""
Her face changed.
"Why?""
"Because his name is on financial records connected to Danielle's trust.""
Patricia stared at him.
Then she looked at me.
"You went through my personal business?""
My father didn't blink.
"Your personal business stopped being private when you used Danielle's identity.""
Patricia's lips trembled.
For a moment, I thought she might deny everything.
Instead, she walked toward the desk and placed a folded document in front of him.
"Fine," she said.
"You want the truth?""
My father opened it.
It was a purchase agreement for the Atlanta townhouse.
The buyer's name was Patricia Brooks.
The deposit had already been paid.
And beneath the payment confirmation was a handwritten note.
Remaining balance to be covered after Danielle's trust release.
My father looked up.
Patricia's eyes were wet.
"Richard, I was going to explain everything.""
He pointed to the note.
"Explain this.""
She took a shaky breath.
Then she said the words that changed the entire investigation.
"Your daughter wasn't the only person your first wife made promises to.""
I stared at her.
"What does that mean?""
Patricia looked directly at me.
"Your mother promised your uncle something years ago. And if you want to know why Daniel helped me, you should ask Richard what happened to the business your mother left behind.""
May you like
My father went completely silent.
And for the first time since this nightmare began, he looked genuinely afraid of what we might discover.
