Chapter 8: The Sister Who Finally Told the Truth
The drive to Atlanta felt endless.
My father kept both hands on the steering wheel, his jaw clenched as he followed the directions Vanessa had sent.
I sat beside him, holding my phone.
Martin had instructed us not to confront Daniel without documenting what happened. He had also contacted a local attorney who could meet us at the property.
My father had wanted to call the police immediately.
But Vanessa had specifically asked him to come first.
"Do you think she's telling the truth?"" I asked.
He glanced at me.
"I think she's frightened.""
"That doesn't mean she's innocent.""
"No. It doesn't.""
I looked out the window.
For years, Vanessa had been the person who made my life difficult.
She had taken my things, mocked my achievements, and turned every family celebration into a competition.
But the thought of her being trapped somewhere with Daniel made my stomach tighten.
"She knew about the business," I said.
"Yes.""
"She received money.""
"Yes.""
"And she bought that townhouse.""
My father nodded.
"We'll deal with those things. Right now, we need to make sure nobody forces her to sign anything.""
When we arrived, the townhouse was exactly as it had appeared in the photograph.
A modern three-story building with dark-framed windows, a small front garden, and a white stone entrance.
A black luxury SUV was parked outside.
My father stopped the car.
"Stay close to me.""
We walked toward the front door.
Before he could knock, Vanessa opened it.
Her face was pale.
Her makeup had run beneath her eyes, and her purple suit was replaced by a wrinkled gray sweater.
"Dad!""
She rushed forward.
My father caught her shoulders.
"Are you hurt?""
She shook her head.
"No.""
"Where is Daniel?""
She pointed toward the living room.
"He was waiting for you.""
A man in his early fifties stood beside the fireplace.
He had neatly trimmed hair, an expensive watch, and a navy jacket that looked too formal for the room.
Daniel Carter.
He smiled when he saw my father.
"Richard. I was wondering when you'd arrive.""
My father stepped inside.
"Why are you making my daughter sign documents?""
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
"She's an adult. Nobody is forcing her to do anything.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"You told me I had to sign.""
"I explained what needed to happen.""
"You said I would be arrested if I didn't!""
Daniel sighed.
"You're being dramatic.""
I felt my anger rise.
"That's funny. Vanessa usually uses that word for other people.""
Daniel turned toward me.
"And you must be Danielle.""
I didn't respond.
He looked me up and down.
"Your mother was a very determined woman.""
"Don't talk about my mother.""
He smiled.
"Still protective, I see.""
My father stepped between us.
"Show me the document.""
Daniel picked up a folder from the coffee table.
He handed it over.
My father read the first page.
His expression hardened.
"What is this?""
"An acknowledgment of funds received.""
"Funds received by whom?""
"Vanessa.""
"From where?""
Daniel shrugged.
"From the business.""
My father turned another page.
The document stated that Vanessa had received approximately $112,000 from the property accounts and had used the money for personal expenses.
It also included language claiming she had acted independently.
Vanessa looked at me.
"That's not true.""
Daniel raised his eyebrows.
"Then why did you take the money?""
"I didn't take all of it!""
My father placed the document on the table.
"Where did the money go?""
Daniel crossed his arms.
"That's a matter between Vanessa and me.""
"No. The funds came from accounts connected to Danielle's trust.""
Daniel's expression changed.
"Those accounts were under review.""
"Not under your control.""
"Your late wife and I had a business arrangement.""
"That arrangement ended six years ago.""
Daniel smiled faintly.
"That's your interpretation.""
My father pulled a copy of the original settlement from his jacket.
"This is the signed agreement. You received your final payment. You relinquished your ownership interest. You had no right to access those accounts.""
Daniel glanced at the document.
Then he looked at me.
"Your mother made a lot of promises.""
"She also kept her agreements," I replied.
His smile disappeared.
He turned toward Vanessa.
"Tell them what you did with the money.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"You told me it was legitimate.""
"You were the registered manager.""
"Because Mom asked me to help!""
Daniel shrugged.
"You're twenty-four years old. You signed the business documents.""
My father took a step forward.
"Do not put this on her without showing us the complete financial records.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Richard, you should be careful. You're making accusations that could affect several people.""
"Then provide the records.""
He didn't answer.
My father took out his phone.
"I've already contacted the attorney.""
Daniel looked toward the front door.
For the first time, he seemed uncertain.
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
"Uncle Daniel, where is the rest of the money?""
He turned toward her.
"What?""
"You said the business needed money for the townhouse. You said the rest was going into investments.""
Daniel sighed.
"That's not what we're discussing.""
"Where did it go?""
"Vanessa, stop.""
"No!""
Her voice cracked.
"You told me I would own this house. You told me I would finally have something that was mine.""
Daniel stared at her.
Then he said something that made my father go completely still.
"The townhouse was never meant to be yours.""
Vanessa blinked.
"What?""
Daniel pointed toward the purchase agreement.
"The property was supposed to be held by the investment company until the accounts were settled.""
"But my name is on it.""
"Temporarily.""
"Then why did you give me the keys?""
Daniel looked annoyed.
"Because your mother needed you to cooperate.""
Vanessa stepped backward.
I watched the realization spread across her face.
She had believed she was receiving a house.
Instead, she had been used to make a financial transaction appear legitimate.
My father turned toward her.
"Did you know the property was being purchased with money connected to Danielle's trust?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I thought it was from the boutique.""
"Did you know the boutique was financed using the rental income?""
"No.""
Daniel laughed.
"That's convenient.""
Vanessa looked at him.
"You told me the money was from investors.""
"And you believed me.""
"Because you're my uncle!""
He shrugged.
"That's your problem.""
The words seemed to knock the air out of her.
She sat on the sofa.
For the first time, I didn't see the smug girl in the purple suit.
I saw someone who had finally realized that the people she trusted had been using her.
My father moved toward the coffee table.
He picked up another document.
"What is this?""
Daniel reached for it.
"That's private.""
Richard held it away.
The document contained a list of payments from the business account.
Several went to Daniel.
Others went to Patricia.
One payment was labeled consulting fee.
Another was labeled property acquisition expense.
And the final payment had Vanessa's name beside it.
$12,000.
I looked at her.
"That's the money you told us about?""
She nodded.
"I thought it was payment for my work.""
My father looked at Daniel.
"You're going to provide complete financial records to the attorney.""
Daniel shook his head.
"I don't take orders from you.""
"Then you'll explain the transactions to the people investigating them.""
Daniel's face tightened.
He reached for his phone.
My father immediately called Martin.
Within minutes, Martin's local attorney arrived.
He reviewed the documents and advised everyone not to sign anything.
Daniel became increasingly agitated.
He paced around the living room, making calls and refusing to answer basic questions.
Finally, he walked toward the front door.
"You people are making a huge mistake.""
My father remained still.
"Then you'll have no problem proving it.""
Daniel left.
The attorney photographed the documents and took copies.
Once he was gone, Vanessa sat with her hands covering her face.
My father crouched in front of her.
"Are you hurt?""
She shook her head.
"Can you tell me everything?""
She began crying.
"Mom told me Danielle was going to get all the money and leave us with nothing. She said the business needed to be protected before you gave Danielle control.""
I looked at her.
"Why did you burn my dress?""
Vanessa lowered her hands.
"Mom told me you were going to show off your inheritance at graduation. She said you would make me look like I had nothing.""
I stared at her.
"So you destroyed the one thing I was excited about because you thought I had more than you?""
She began crying harder.
"I was jealous.""
The honesty was almost more painful than another excuse.
"Of what?""
"Everything.""
She looked at me.
"You worked, you got good grades, and Dad was proud of you. Mom kept telling me that you were going to become important and forget about us.""
I shook my head.
"I never wanted you to fail.""
"I know.""
"No, Vanessa. You don't know. I helped you with your applications.
I defended you when people criticized you. I celebrated your engagement. I never asked you to compete with me.""
She looked down.
"I know.""
I sat opposite her.
"Then why did you?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
My father stood.
"Vanessa, you're going to cooperate with the investigation. You're also going to return any money you received that wasn't legitimately yours.""
She nodded.
"And you need to apologize to Danielle.""
Vanessa looked at me.
"I'm sorry.""
I waited.
She swallowed.
"I'm sorry I burned your dress. I'm sorry I went into your room. I'm sorry about the jewelry.""
Her voice broke.
"I knew how much that necklace meant to you.""
I looked away.
"Why?""
"Because I heard you talking to Dad about wearing it for graduation.""
My eyes filled.
She had known.
She had known exactly what she was destroying.
And she had done it anyway.
I stood.
"I hear your apology. But I don't know if I can forgive you right now.""
Vanessa nodded slowly.
"I understand.""
We left the townhouse shortly afterward.
My father drove us to a nearby restaurant because neither of us had eaten all day.
While we waited for food, Vanessa received a message.
She read it and immediately turned pale.
"What's wrong?"" my father asked.
She handed him the phone.
The message was from Patricia.
Don't say another word to Richard. If you cooperate with them, you'll destroy everything we've worked for. Remember who paid for your life.
Vanessa stared at the screen.
Then she began typing.
My father gently stopped her.
"Don't respond.""
She looked at him.
"She's my mother.""
"I know.""
"What am I supposed to do?""
He took a breath.
"Tell the truth. Whatever happens after that, you have to live with your own choices.""
Vanessa nodded.
Then she looked at me.
"Danielle?""
I raised my eyes.
"There's something else you should know.""
"What?""
She swallowed.
"Mom has another copy of the inheritance documents. She keeps it in the safe at her friend's house.""
My father frowned.
"Why?""
"Because she said the original paperwork could be challenged.""
I stared at her.
"How do you know?""
Vanessa looked down.
"Because I helped her put it there.""
My father slowly leaned back.
"Where is the safe?""
Vanessa told us.
Then she added one final detail.
"There's also a recording.""
I frowned.
"What recording?""
Vanessa looked directly at me.
"The recording of Mom explaining why she wanted your signature.""
My father went completely still.
"Where is it?""
May you like
Vanessa whispered.
"On her laptop. And I think it proves she planned all of this before your graduation.""
