Chapter 7: The Photograph That Changed Everything
I read the message three times.
*And he knows where Lily goes to school.*
The words seemed to burn into the screen.
For six years, I had believed my family was dealing with an inheritance dispute. Then I discovered forged documents, a hidden daughter, and a brother-in-law who appeared to have manipulated my dead brother.
Now someone was threatening my eight-year-old daughter.
I immediately called Lily's school.
“Good afternoon, this is Daniel Brooks. I need to speak with the principal.””
The receptionist transferred me.
When Principal Harris answered, I kept my voice controlled.
“I need you to place my daughter on a restricted pickup list. Nobody is authorized to collect her except me or the two people I will provide in writing.””
“Is there a particular concern, Mr. Brooks?””
“Yes. A family safety issue.””
“Has someone threatened her?””
I glanced toward Vanessa.
“Yes.””
Principal Harris didn't ask unnecessary questions.
“Understood. I'll notify the front office and security immediately.””
“Please don't release her to anyone claiming to be a relative.””
“Absolutely.””
I ended the call and contacted my attorney.
Richard was already speaking to someone about the threatening messages.
Vanessa sat on the edge of the bed, staring at her hands.
I turned toward her.
“Tell me everything about the night David died.””
She shook her head.
“I already told you.””
“No. You told me enough to make yourself look frightened. I want the truth.””
Her eyes filled.
“Daniel, I swear I never wanted David dead.””
“That isn't what I asked.””
She looked at me.
Then she finally spoke.
“David called me at 8:17 that night.””
I waited.
“He said Andrew had been lying about the property. He had discovered that the transfer documents were designed to move the land into a company controlled by Andrew.””
“Why did he meet him?””
“Andrew promised to show him the original deed.””
“And you?””
“I told David not to go.””
“Did you follow him?””
She hesitated.
Then nodded.
My chest tightened.
“You were there?””
“I stayed in the parking area near the old highway entrance.””
“Why?””
“Because I wanted to know whether Andrew would give him the documents.””
“What happened?””
Vanessa pressed her palms against her eyes.
“I saw David's car arrive. Andrew came out of another vehicle. They argued.””
“What about?””
“The money. The property. Chloe.””
I leaned forward.
“Did they fight?””
“No. Not physically.””
“Then what?””
“David handed Andrew an envelope. Andrew looked inside, became angry, and threw it back at him.””
“What was in the envelope?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I couldn't see.””
“Then?””
“David got into his car. Andrew went back to his vehicle. I left.””
I stared at her.
“You left without checking on David?””
“He was alive when I drove away!””
Her voice cracked.
“I heard him start the engine. I saw his headlights.””
I looked at her.
“Did you tell the police?””
“No.””
“Why?””
She lowered her voice.
“Andrew called me afterward. He said if I mentioned being there, he would make sure I lost Chloe.””
I stared.
“You were willing to let your brother-in-law control your daughter rather than tell the truth?””
“I was afraid!””
“And you let my family believe David was alone.””
She began crying.
I looked away.
I couldn't tell whether I felt anger, disgust, or pity.
Perhaps all three.
Richard returned to the room.
“Daniel, I spoke with the authorities. They've advised that we preserve the messages and avoid contacting Andrew directly.””
“What about Chloe?””
“They're arranging a welfare check at the address.””
Vanessa suddenly stood.
“No!””
Richard looked at her.
“Mrs. Brooks?””
“You can't go there.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because Andrew won't be there.””
“Then what's the problem?””
“His men will.””
The room fell silent.
Richard's expression changed.
“His men?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“He has people who work for him. Security contractors. People who don't ask questions.””
Richard immediately made another call.
I walked toward the window.
Below us, Lily was sitting with Marcus and Caleb in the garden.
Marcus was helping her draw flowers on a sheet of paper.
She laughed at something he said.
For a moment, I couldn't move.
That was my daughter.
That was the child Andrew was threatening.
And I wasn't going to let anyone turn her life into another weapon.
At 4:30 p.m., Principal Harris called.
“Mr. Brooks, your daughter is safe.””
I closed my eyes.
“Thank you.””
“However, someone did come to the school asking to collect her.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who?””
“A woman named Vanessa Carter.””
I turned toward the living room.
Vanessa was standing near the staircase.
“Did you release Lily?””
“No,” Principal Harris replied.
“The receptionist followed the restrictions you provided.””
“What happened?””
“She said she was Lily's stepmother and that you had authorized her to collect the child.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She was staring at me.
“Did she leave?””
“Yes. But she left a package at the front office.””
“What package?””
“A photograph and a handwritten note.””
I felt my fingers tighten around the phone.
“What did the note say?””
Principal Harris paused.
“It said, 'Tell Daniel that family secrets always come home.''”
I thanked her and ended the call.
Vanessa was shaking.
“You went to my daughter's school?”” I asked.
She immediately shook her head.
“I didn't.””
“Someone used your name.””
“Andrew.””
“Why would Andrew use your name?””
She looked down.
I walked toward her.
“Because you gave him access to Lily's information.””
“I didn't!””
“Then how did he know where she went to school?””
She started crying.
“I don't know.””
I looked at Richard.
“We need to get Lily somewhere safe.””
Richard nodded.
“I'll arrange for an officer to accompany us.””
The package arrived at the house forty minutes later.
It was a plain white envelope.
Inside was a photograph of David standing beside a black SUV.
The date printed on the back matched the night he died.
But there was something else.
A second photograph showed the same SUV parked outside our house.
The image had been taken recently.
I recognized the front porch.
I recognized the magnolia tree.
And I recognized the person standing beside the vehicle.
Vanessa.
She was speaking to Andrew.
On the back, someone had written:
You should ask your wife why she kept visiting your brother after his death.
I turned the photograph over.
“Vanessa?””
She looked at it.
Then she sat down.
“Tell me.””
She covered her mouth.
“I didn't want you to know.””
“How many times did you meet Andrew after David died?””
She didn't answer.
“Vanessa!””
“Three times.””
“Where?””
“Once at his office. Twice at the house.””
“Which house?””
She looked toward the staircase.
“This one.””
I felt sick.
“You brought him here?””
“He came when you were away.””
“Why?””
“He wanted the original deed.””
I stared at her.
“And you let him search my house?””
“He said he needed the document to settle David's estate.””
“David's estate?””
She nodded.
“Andrew told me that Chloe was entitled to a share.””
I took a breath.
“Did he find the deed?””
Vanessa looked at the photograph.
“No.””
“Then what did he take?””
She hesitated.
“A small box.””
“What box?””
“Your mother's.””
I froze.
“What was inside?””
“I don't know.””
“You watched him take it and didn't ask?””
“He said it belonged to him.””
Richard stepped forward.
“Mrs. Brooks, do you remember the box's appearance?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Dark wood. Silver clasp. About the size of a jewelry box.””
I closed my eyes.
I knew exactly what she meant.
My mother had kept a small wooden box in her bedroom.
I hadn't seen it since the funeral.
I had assumed it was among the belongings packed away by relatives.
But now I understood.
Whatever was inside that box was important enough for Andrew to enter my home twice.
And Vanessa had helped him.
That evening, I took Lily to a hotel under a different reservation name.
Richard arranged the security details.
Marcus insisted on coming with us.
“Dad, I'm not leaving her alone,” he said.
Lily looked up at him.
“Are you coming to the hotel?””
Marcus smiled.
“If that's okay with you.””
She nodded.
“Can you help me finish my drawing?””
He laughed.
“Absolutely.””
For the first time since the garden incident, Lily looked like a normal eight-year-old.
She ate chicken tenders, drank strawberry milk, and spent twenty minutes deciding which cartoon to watch.
I sat by the window with my phone.
At 9:16 p.m., a message arrived from an unknown number.
It was a photograph.
The wooden box.
The same silver clasp.
Beneath it was a handwritten note.
*Your mother left something for you. Andrew took it. But he doesn't know what was underneath.*
I immediately called Richard.
He answered on the second ring.
“Daniel?””
“Someone just sent me a photograph of my mother's box.””
“Send it to me.””
I forwarded the image.
Richard examined it.
Then he said something that made my heart race.
“Daniel, I think I know where the second copy is.””
“Where?””
“In Emily's old sewing table.””
I stared at the phone.
“The blue room?””
“Yes. Your mother mentioned a hidden compartment in the original inventory.””
I looked toward Lily.
She was laughing at the television.
I couldn't go back to the house.
Not with Andrew watching.
But I knew someone who could help.
Marcus.
I called him.
“Son, I need you to do something.””
“Anything.””
“Go to the blue room with Richard. Look beneath the sewing table. There's supposed to be a hidden compartment.””
“Okay.””
“And Marcus?””
“Yeah?””
“Don't go alone. Wait for Richard.””
He agreed.
I ended the call.
Five minutes later, Richard sent me a photograph.
It showed a narrow wooden panel beneath the sewing table.
The panel had been removed.
Behind it was a small metal container.
Inside the container was a folded letter and a flash drive.
Richard called immediately.
“Daniel, we found it.””
“What does the letter say?””
He paused.
“It's from your mother.””
“Read it.””
His voice became quieter.
“Daniel, your mother says the property wasn't the only thing David and Andrew were trying to acquire.””
I gripped the phone.
“What else?””
Richard turned the page.
“According to this letter, there was an insurance policy connected to the original land purchase.””
“What kind of insurance?””
“A substantial life insurance policy.””
I swallowed.
“Whose life?””
Richard didn't answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Your brother's.””
I stared at the wall.
“Who was the beneficiary?””
Richard looked at the document again.
“Andrew Carter.””
My blood ran cold.
Then Richard added:
“Daniel, there's a second beneficiary listed.””
I closed my eyes.
“Who?””
May you like
He whispered:
“Vanessa Brooks.””
