Chapter 8: The Insurance Policy Nobody Was Supposed to Find

I didn't sleep that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the photograph of David beside the black SUV.

Then I saw Vanessa standing beside Andrew outside my house.

Then I saw the insurance document.

My brother had died in a car accident.

And two people connected to the property had been named as beneficiaries on a substantial policy covering his life.

I wanted to believe there was an innocent explanation.

But the documents were becoming impossible to ignore.

At 6:45 a.m., Richard called.

“Daniel, I've reviewed the policy.””

“What did you find?””

“The policy was issued eleven months before David died.””

“Who arranged it?””

“An insurance broker connected to Andrew's development company.””

I sat upright.

“What was the amount?””

“Two million dollars.””

I closed my eyes.

“Two million?””

“Yes. Andrew was listed as the primary beneficiary. Vanessa was listed as the secondary beneficiary.””

“Was David aware of the policy?””

Richard paused.

“His signature appears on the application.””

“Was it genuine?””

“That's what we're investigating.””

I looked toward the hotel bed.

Lily was asleep beneath a white blanket, one hand resting on her stuffed rabbit.

“Richard, I need the authorities to examine this.””

“Already done. I've preserved the documents and contacted the appropriate investigators.””

“What about the flash drive?””

“I haven't opened it yet. I wanted you present.””

I looked at the clock.

“Where are you?””

“At my office.””

“I'll be there in an hour.””

Before ending the call, Richard added:

“Daniel, there's another problem.””

“What?””

“The policy was paid out.””

My stomach dropped.

“When?””

“Six weeks after David died.””

I gripped the phone.

“Who received the money?””

“Andrew received most of it. The secondary payment was transferred through an account associated with Vanessa.””

I looked at the ceiling.

“Did she know?””

“I don't know. But the financial records show the money eventually moved into a joint investment account.””

A joint investment account.

Vanessa and I had opened one shortly after our wedding.

She had told me it was for the children's future.

I had deposited money regularly.

She had handled the paperwork.

“Richard, I need a copy of every transaction.””

“I'll prepare it.””

I ended the call.

Then I sat beside Lily.

She stirred.

“Dad?””

“Good morning, sweetheart.””

“Is it time to go home?””

I brushed her hair away from her forehead.

“Not yet.””

She looked around the hotel room.

“Did I do something bad?””

I felt my throat tighten.

“No, baby. You're safe. That's all that matters.””

She nodded.

Then she reached for my hand.

“Can Marcus come for breakfast?””

I smiled.

“I'm sure he'd love to.””

At Richard's office, the flash drive revealed three files.

The first was a scanned insurance application.

The second was a series of bank transfers.

The third was an audio recording.

Richard played the recording.

A man's voice emerged.

It was David.

I recognized him immediately.

His voice was older than I remembered, rougher around the edges.

“If you're listening to this, something has happened. I don't know whether I'll get the chance to explain everything in person.””

I gripped the edge of the table.

David continued.

“Mom was right about the property. Andrew isn't trying to develop it. He's trying to acquire the entire parcel before the surrounding land values increase.””

A pause.

Then a second voice.

Vanessa.

“David, you need to stop.””

My heart pounded.

David answered.

“You told me the insurance was for Chloe.””

“It was.””

“Then why is Andrew the beneficiary?””

“He's handling the paperwork.””

“That's not an answer.””

I looked at Richard.

He didn't move.

The recording continued.

David's voice became sharper.

“You knew he was using me. You knew he was planning to transfer the house into his company.””

Vanessa replied:

“I didn't know how far he would go.””

“You helped him.””

“I was trying to protect Chloe!””

“By helping him steal Lily's inheritance?””

Vanessa's voice broke.

“David, please.””

Then came a sound.

A chair scraping.

David spoke again.

“You need to tell Daniel everything.””

“I can't.””

“Then I'll tell him.””

A long silence followed.

Finally, Vanessa whispered:

“Andrew will destroy us.””

David replied:

“Then let him try.””

The recording ended.

I stared at the laptop.

Richard removed his glasses.

“That is significant evidence.””

I nodded.

But there was another recording.

The file was labeled:

*SECOND MEETING — 9:42 PM.*

Richard pressed play.

This time, David sounded frightened.

“Andrew, you said the money would go to Chloe.””

Andrew's voice was calm.

“Chloe will be taken care of.””

“That's not what we agreed.””

“You signed the documents.””

“I didn't sign a death policy.””

There was a pause.

Then Andrew said something that made my blood run cold.

“David, you're making this much harder than it needs to be.””

I leaned closer.

David answered:

“You can't keep threatening people.””

Andrew laughed quietly.

“I'm not threatening anyone.””

“Then why did you follow me?””

A chair moved.

Then Andrew spoke.

“Because you have something that belongs to me.””

The recording stopped.

Richard looked at me.

“Do you know what David was referring to?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I stared at the screen.

Then I noticed the date.

The recording had been made on the night of David's accident.

At 9:42 p.m.

The accident report stated that the emergency call had been received at 10:18 p.m.

Thirty-six minutes.

Thirty-six minutes between that conversation and the crash.

I stood.

“I want the original accident file.””

Richard nodded.

“I'll request it.””

“And I want to know whether Andrew was anywhere near that road.””

“Daniel, let the investigators handle that.””

I turned toward him.

“That's my brother.””

“I know.””

“That's my niece's father.””

“I know.””

Richard stood too.

“And that's exactly why you mustn't make a move that compromises the evidence.””

I sat down again.

He was right.

But knowing that didn't make waiting any easier.

At noon, Vanessa called.

I almost ignored it.

Then I answered.

“Daniel?””

“What?””

“Can we meet?””

“No.””

“Please.””

“Why?””

“Because I need to tell you something about the insurance.””

I looked at Richard.

He gestured for me to put the call on speaker.

“Go ahead.””

Vanessa's voice trembled.

“I didn't know Andrew had made me a beneficiary.””

I stared at the phone.

“You signed the documents.””

“He told me it was a business protection policy.””

“You knew David was insured for two million dollars.””

“I knew there was an insurance policy. I didn't know Andrew had made himself the primary beneficiary.””

Richard leaned closer.

“Mrs. Brooks, are you saying you never received any proceeds?””

There was silence.

Then Vanessa said:

“I received money.””

“How much?””

“Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.””

I closed my eyes.

“Where did it go?””

“Into the investment account.””

“The account you shared with me?””

“Yes.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So you've been using money connected to my brother's death while telling me you were protecting our family.””

“I didn't know he would die!””

“Did you ever tell the police you were at the meeting?””

“No.””

“Did you ever tell me?””

“No.””

“Did you tell Chloe?””

Vanessa began crying.

“No.””

I rubbed my forehead.

“What do you want from me?””

“I want to make things right.””

“Can you bring my brother back?””

She sobbed.

“No.””

“Can you give Lily back the childhood you spent making her feel unwanted?””

“I know I hurt her.””

“Do you?””

There was a long silence.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Andrew has the original policy.””

Richard immediately looked up.

“What original policy?””

Vanessa continued.

“The signed application. The medical declaration. Everything.””

“Why?””

“Because David discovered that the medical information on the application had been changed.””

I felt a chill.

“What medical information?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“David had a medical condition. It was listed on the original application, but the final policy said he had no significant medical history.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“Who changed it?””

“Andrew.””

“Did David know?””

“Yes. That's why he wanted to cancel the policy.””

I stared at the phone.

“Why didn't he?””

“Andrew threatened to expose something about Chloe.””

I swallowed.

“What?””

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“He threatened to tell her that David wasn't her biological father.””

The room went silent.

Richard slowly leaned back.

I looked at the phone.

“What did you just say?””

Vanessa began crying harder.

“Daniel, I don't know what to believe anymore.””

“Is David Chloe's father?””

She didn't answer.

“Vanessa!””

“I thought he was.””

Richard stood.

“Mrs. Brooks, that's not a sufficient answer. Is there a reason to question the paternity acknowledgment?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Andrew had been with me before David.””

I stared at the wall.

The implications were enormous.

“Are you saying Andrew might be Chloe's father?””

“I don't know.””

“Did David know?””

“He suspected.””

I felt sick.

All this time, I had thought the secret was that my brother had a hidden daughter.

Now the truth was that even the identity of her father might have been deliberately concealed.

Richard ended the call.

“Daniel, we need to stop speculating and establish the facts.””

I nodded.

But before I could say anything, another message arrived.

It was from Marcus.

*Dad, Mom came back to the house. She took some documents and left with Jordan. Caleb says she told them they're going to stay with Uncle Andrew.*

I immediately called him.

“Where's Lily?””

“With me. She's safe.””

“Good. Stay inside.””

“Dad, there's something else.””

“What?””

Marcus hesitated.

“I found a letter in Mom's bedroom.””

“What letter?””

“It has Chloe's name on it.””

“Read it.””

His voice became quieter.

“It says, 'If the truth about her father comes out, everything we built will collapse.''”

I closed my eyes.

“Marcus, take a photograph and send it to me.””

He did.

The letter was short.

It was dated three months earlier.

And at the bottom was Vanessa's signature.

But it was the sentence above her signature that changed everything.

The child must never discover that Andrew is her biological father.

I stared at the screen.

Richard read it over my shoulder.

Then he said:

“Daniel, this may explain why Andrew has been so desperate to control the property.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because if Chloe is his daughter, he may have been trying to secure an inheritance for her without exposing the truth.””

I shook my head.

“But why take Lily's share?””

Richard pointed toward the financial documents.

“Because the property was the most valuable asset available to him.””

I looked down at the letter.

My brother had possibly raised another man's child.

Vanessa had married me.

Andrew had tried to take control of the house.

And Lily had been caught in the middle.

Then my phone rang again.

This time, it was a number I recognized.

The school.

I answered immediately.

“Hello?””

A woman's voice sounded frightened.

“Mr. Brooks, it's Principal Harris.””

“What happened?””

“Your daughter is safe. But a man came to the school with a court document claiming he has temporary guardianship authority.””

My entire body went cold.

“What man?””

“He identified himself as Andrew Carter.””

I stood so quickly my chair fell backward.

“Did you release Lily?””

“No. We refused.””

I closed my eyes.

“Thank you.””

But Principal Harris wasn't finished.

“He left something behind.””

“What?””

“A legal notice. It says he's filing for emergency custody of your daughter.””

I stared at Richard.

He looked equally stunned.

“On what grounds?”” I asked.

Principal Harris read the document.

“Neglect and alleged parental instability.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

Then she added:

“There's another name listed as a supporting witness.””

I already knew.

“Who?””

“Vanessa Brooks.””

That evening, Richard obtained a copy of the filing through the appropriate legal channels.

The petition was full of accusations.

It claimed I had become emotionally unstable following the discovery of the property dispute.

It claimed Lily was living in an unsafe environment.

It claimed Vanessa had been the child's primary caregiver.

And it included a sworn statement alleging that I had threatened my wife in front of witnesses.

I read the last page twice.

Vanessa had signed it.

I looked at Richard.

“She lied under oath.””

Richard nodded.

“We'll challenge the filing. We also have evidence of the threatening messages and the attempted unauthorized collection from the school.””

I closed the folder.

“What happens now?””

“We prepare. We preserve every record. And we make sure Lily's welfare remains the central issue.””

I nodded.

Then I noticed something attached to the petition.

A photocopy of an old photograph.

It showed me standing beside David outside our mother's house.

On the back, someone had written:

*THE BROTHER WHO TOOK EVERYTHING.*

I turned the photograph over.

There was a handwritten note from Andrew.

Daniel, you were supposed to have one chance to walk away. Now you'll learn what it feels like to lose your family.

I placed the photograph on the desk.

Richard studied it.

Then he looked at me.

“Daniel, I think we finally understand what Andrew wants.””

“What?””

“He doesn't just want the property.””

He pointed to the custody petition.

“He wants to make you look like an unfit father so he can use the court system to gain access to the child and the estate.””

I looked at the photograph of Lily on my phone.

She was smiling.

Her bow tie was crooked.

Her eyes were bright.

I thought about the garden.

About Vanessa pointing at her.

About the eighty guests watching my daughter get rejected.

Then I thought about Andrew trying to take her away through a court filing.

I stood.

“He's not getting near her.””

Richard nodded.

“Then we need the truth about Chloe before he can use her against you.””

My phone vibrated.

A new message appeared.

It came from an unknown number.

There was a photograph of a little girl sitting at a kitchen table.

Chloe.

Beside her was a folded piece of paper.

The message read:

*IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHO DAVID'S REAL DAUGHTER IS, COME TO THE OLD BROOKS HOUSE TOMORROW. COME ALONE.*

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Then another message appeared.

*BRING THE ORIGINAL DEED. OR YOU'LL NEVER SEE CHLOE AGAIN.*
