Chapter 8: The Father Who Sold His Children

Andre stood beneath the parking lot lights, holding the transfer agreement as if he were presenting a birthday gift.

His walking cane rested against his leg.

Camille stood beside him.

Marcus looked like a man waiting for a sentence to be carried out.

My mother was crying quietly in the back of the van.

And I was staring at the man who had just told me he was my biological father.

“You said you were protecting me,” I told him.

Andre tilted his head.

“From whom?””

“From everyone.””

He laughed.

“That's a childish way to look at the world.””

I stepped closer.

“You let me grow up believing my father was dead.””

“Your adoptive father.””

“He raised me.””

“He stole you.””

“Did he love me?””

Andre's expression hardened.

“That isn't relevant.””

I almost laughed.

“Of course it isn't.””

He handed the document to Camille.

“Show him the last page.””

She turned it toward me.

There were two signature lines.

One belonged to me.

The other belonged to my mother.

I examined the wording.

The agreement transferred control of the family estate into a private trust.

But there was a condition.

Both children had to consent.

Both children.

I looked up.

“Where is the other child?””

Camille smiled.

“You're looking at her.””

I turned toward her.

“What?””

She touched her chest.

“I'm your sister, Darius.””

“No.””

Her expression changed.

“I'm your twin.””

I shook my head.

“That's not what Mom said.””

Andre laughed.

“Evelyn has spent years telling herself whatever makes the truth easier to swallow.””

My mother climbed out of the van.

“Don't you dare!””

She looked directly at Andre.

“You took one child from me and sold the other to Camille!””

Andre's jaw tightened.

“Be quiet.””

“No!””

Her voice echoed across the parking lot.

“You told me the babies would be safe. You promised me they would grow up together if I signed those papers.””

Andre raised his cane.

“Evelyn.””

She stepped forward.

“You made me choose between my children!””

I looked at her.

“Mom, what is she talking about?””

She turned toward me.

Her tears ran down her cheeks.

“When you and your sister were born, Andre was already involved in a criminal financial operation. He wanted access to the family trust.””

I looked at Andre.

“He was your father.””

“He was my husband,” she replied.

“And I was terrified of him.””

She continued.

“He told me that if I refused to sign the adoption agreement, both children would disappear. Your father, the man who raised you, offered to take you somewhere safe.””

I stared at her.

“And Camille?””

My mother looked at the woman standing beside Andre.

“She was supposed to go with another family.””

Camille laughed.

“Except nobody came for me.””

Her voice had changed.

The polished, confident tone was gone.

“I spent three years in a private residence while everyone argued over money. I watched other children leave with parents. I watched you grow up in photographs.””

She pointed at me.

“You had birthdays. School trips. Christmas mornings. A father who held your hand.””

I swallowed.

“I didn't know.””

“You didn't need to know!””

Her eyes filled with anger.

“You got everything. I got a new name, a new identity, and a man who told me I was worth twelve million dollars if I could bring him the estate.””

I looked at Andre.

“You used her.””

Andre shrugged.

“She was useful.””

Camille turned toward him.

For a moment, something changed in her face.

It was subtle.

But I saw it.

The realization that the man she had spent her entire life trying to impress had never loved her.

“Dad,” she whispered.

Andre didn't look at her.

“Get the signature.””

She stepped toward me.

“Darius, please.””

I backed away.

“Don't come near me.””

Her voice cracked.

“I'm your sister.””

“You married me.””

She lowered her eyes.

“I know.””

“You kissed me. You slept beside me. You celebrated anniversaries with me.””

“I know.””

“You watched me mourn a father you knew was alive.””

Tears ran down her face.

“I didn't have a choice.””

I stared at her.

“You always had a choice.””

Andre tapped his cane against the pavement.

“Enough sentiment.””

He gestured toward the men.

One of them approached me.

“Take him inside.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“No.””

Andre turned.

“What did you say?””

Marcus moved between us.

“I said no.””

Andre looked almost amused.

“You've forgotten who pays you.””

Marcus pulled a folded document from his jacket.

“I remember exactly who paid me.””

He threw it onto the hood of the van.

It was a bank transfer confirmation.

I recognized the amount.

Eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

The same transfer from my company.

Marcus looked at me.

“That money wasn't stolen to pay for an affair. It was payment for keeping Andre's identity hidden.””

I stared at him.

“Who paid you?””

He looked at Camille.

“She did.””

Camille shook her head.

“That's not true.””

Marcus continued.

“She transferred the money through CVC Holdings. I was supposed to keep Darius away from the old estate records until Andre returned.””

Andre's expression changed.

“You stupid little man.””

Marcus laughed.

“I've been stupid for eleven years.””

He looked at me.

“And I'm done.””

He pulled out his phone.

“Everything is recorded. The financial transfers. The forged signatures.

The warehouse incident. The original adoption agreement.””

Andre stepped forward.

“Give me the phone.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Too late.””

He pressed a button.

A red recording indicator appeared.

Then another.

Then a third.

Camille looked around.

“Who else has this?””

Marcus smiled sadly.

“Everyone who matters.””

Andre raised his cane and struck Marcus across the shoulder.

Marcus stumbled.

One of the men grabbed him.

I moved forward.

“Get your hands off him!””

Andre turned toward me.

“Sign the papers, Darius.””

“No.””

His expression became cold.

“Then you have made your choice.””

He nodded toward the men.

They moved.

Vanessa suddenly stepped between them.

“Wait!””

She held up the black ledger.

Andre stopped.

“Give me that.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not until you tell me what happened to my mother.””

Andre stared at her.

For the first time that night, he looked genuinely surprised.

“What?””

Vanessa opened the ledger to a marked page.

“My biological mother was named Evelyn Cole. She died when I was a baby. But I found a payment made to her account three months after her supposed death.””

Andre's expression hardened.

“That has nothing to do with you.””

“It has everything to do with me.””

She turned the page.

“Someone paid a private hospital to keep her identity hidden.””

My mother looked confused.

Andre slowly lowered his cane.

Vanessa continued.

“I found the hospital records. My mother didn't die.””

I looked at her.

“Who was she?””

Vanessa turned toward my mother.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Evelyn Hayes wasn't the only woman Andre married.””

Andre's face went pale.

Vanessa pointed at him.

“My mother was his first wife.””

She turned toward me.

“And I was born before you.””

I stared at her.

“Then…”

Vanessa nodded.

“I'm not your half-sister through your mother.””

She swallowed.

“I'm your half-sister through Andre.””

Andre stepped forward.

“Enough!””

But Vanessa wasn't finished.

“My mother gave birth to me in Chicago. Andre abandoned us when he found out she had evidence of his financial crimes.””

She looked at my mother.

“And Evelyn raised me after my biological mother disappeared.””

My mother began crying.

I looked between them.

“So you were adopted by my mother?””

Vanessa nodded.

“After Andre abandoned me, Evelyn found me. She couldn't save her own children from him, so she saved me.””

My mother reached for Vanessa.

They held each other.

For the first time, I understood why Vanessa had been willing to risk her life to help me.

She hadn't been protecting a stranger.

She had been protecting the family that had once saved her.

Andre looked furious.

“You have no idea what you're talking about.””

Vanessa held up another document.

“Then explain this.””

It was a birth certificate.

Andre Cole was listed as the father.

The mother's name was clearly printed.

*EVELYN COLE.*

I looked at Andre.

“You abandoned another family?””

He didn't answer.

Instead, he turned toward Camille.

“Get the papers.””

But Camille wasn't looking at him.

She was staring at Vanessa.

Then she looked at me.

And something inside her seemed to collapse.

“You knew,” she whispered.

Vanessa shook her head.

“I found out two months ago.””

Camille stepped backward.

“You knew and you still let me believe I was alone?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You weren't alone. You had a family. You chose to destroy it.””

Andre grabbed Camille's arm.

“Move!””

She pulled away.

“No.””

He stared at her.

“What?””

“I said no.””

He slapped the document against her chest.

“You are going to finish what you started.””

Camille looked at him.

Then she looked at me.

For eleven years, I had believed she was the person who knew me best.

Now I was looking at a stranger who had shared my life.

She reached into her purse.

Andre smiled.

“Good girl.””

But instead of taking out another document, she pulled out a small silver flash drive.

She held it toward me.

“Darius, take this.””

Andre's smile vanished.

“Camille!””

She ignored him.

“This contains the original recording from the warehouse.””

I stared at the drive.

“What recording?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“The recording that proves Andre didn't kill your father.””

She looked at my mother.

“He didn't kill him because your father was never at the warehouse.””

Andre lunged toward her.

But Camille stepped backward.

“Your father is alive, Darius.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

She looked directly into my eyes.

“And he's the one who ordered the attack on your house.””

A siren sounded in the distance.

Then another.

Andre turned toward the road.

His men began moving.

Marcus was still being held, but the man gripping him suddenly released his arm.

He looked toward the approaching lights.

Camille placed the flash drive in my hand.

“Listen to it before you decide who your real father is.””

I stared at her.

“Why are you helping me?””

She looked down.

“Because I finally understand something.””

“What?””

Her voice broke.

“He never intended to give me anything.””

Andre shouted.

“Get her!””

Camille turned toward him.

May you like

Then she whispered:

“He was going to kill me too.””
