Chapter 9: The Recording That Changed Everything
The police arrived before Andre could reach the black sedan.
Blue lights flashed across the parking lot.
Several officers rushed toward the entrance.
Andre dropped his cane.
Two men attempted to run.
Marcus pulled away from the third.
Within seconds, the entire parking lot became chaos.
I held the flash drive tightly in my hand.
Camille stood several feet away, watching the officers surround Andre.
My mother was crying.
Vanessa had both arms around her.
And I couldn't stop thinking about one sentence.
Your father is alive.
Not the man who raised me.
Not Andre.
The other man.
The man who had disappeared eleven years earlier.
The man whose voice had called me two days ago.
The man who had told me to find the original recording.
I turned toward Marcus.
“Where is he?””
Marcus looked at me.
“Who?””
“My father.””
He lowered his eyes.
“Darius…”
“Don't.””
I stepped closer.
“Tell me where he is.””
Marcus looked toward the officers.
Then he whispered:
“Your father is the reason I stayed close to you.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Where?””
Marcus reached into his jacket.
He removed a small envelope.
Inside was a photograph of a house overlooking Lake Lanier.
A red circle had been drawn around the front door.
On the back were four words.
*HE'S WAITING FOR YOU.*
Two hours later, I was sitting in a police interview room with Vanessa.
My mother had been taken to a secure medical unit.
Marcus was being questioned separately.
Camille had requested an attorney.
Andre had refused to answer any questions.
I placed the flash drive on the table.
A detective named Harris sat across from me.
He was a middle-aged Black man with tired eyes and a quiet manner.
“Mr. Hayes, before we discuss the evidence, I need to ask you something.””
“What?””
“Did you know your wife was your biological sister?””
I stared at him.
“No.””
“Did you know Andre Cole was your biological father?””
“No.””
“Did you know the man who raised you was alive?””
I hesitated.
“I heard his voice two days ago.””
Detective Harris wrote something down.
“Did he identify himself?””
“Yes.””
“Did he give you a location?””
“No.””
Harris nodded.
Then he looked at the flash drive.
“What's on this?””
“I don't know yet.””
He leaned back.
“Then I suggest you don't listen to it alone.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She nodded.
Detective Harris connected the drive to a secured laptop.
A video file appeared.
The date was eleven years earlier.
The location was the warehouse near the airport.
He pressed play.
The screen showed a concrete room.
A folding table.
Two chairs.
My father sat on one side.
Andre sat on the other.
Marcus stood near the entrance.
Camille was behind the camera.
I leaned forward.
The recording began with my father's voice.
“Where is the money, Andre?””
Andre laughed.
“You're asking me that?””
“I'm asking where you moved it.””
“It's mine.””
My father leaned forward.
“Evelyn's money is not yours.””
Andre slammed his hand against the table.
“She's my wife!””
“And she is the mother of my son!””
Andre stood.
“You stole my child.””
My father remained seated.
“I gave him a home.””
“You gave him your name.””
“I gave him a father.””
Andre laughed.
Then he said something that made my stomach turn.
“You should have let him die with the other one.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She covered her mouth.
The recording continued.
My father stood.
“If you touch either child, I'll destroy everything you've built.””
Andre stepped closer.
“You can't destroy what you don't own.””
Then the camera shook.
A loud crash sounded.
The screen went black.
Detective Harris paused the recording.
“There's more.””
He opened another file.
This one showed a hallway.
My father was standing alone.
He was holding a phone.
He looked directly toward the camera.
“If you're watching this, Darius, it means Andre has returned.””
He swallowed.
“I need you to understand something. I did not adopt you because I wanted to take another man's child.””
His eyes filled.
“I adopted you because your mother begged me to save you.””
He sat down.
“And because I loved you before I ever knew you were mine.””
I stared at the screen.
The detective looked at me.
“Did he say yours?””
I nodded.
The recording continued.
My father wiped his eyes.
“Evelyn and I had a child before you were born. A little girl. She died shortly after birth.””
I felt my throat tighten.
He continued.
“When Andre abandoned Evelyn, I took her in. I married her. And when she gave birth to you, I knew I would never let anyone take you away.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She was crying silently.
My father leaned toward the camera.
“Darius, Andre is not the only person who has been lying to you.””
The video ended.
I sat motionless.
Then Detective Harris opened the final file.
A document appeared.
It was a medical report.
The date was eleven years earlier.
The patient was Andre Cole.
The diagnosis was severe head trauma.
The report listed an emergency admission to a private hospital.
The physician's notes included one sentence.
*Patient sustained injuries consistent with a fall from significant height.*
I stared at the document.
“Did he survive?””
Detective Harris nodded.
“He was treated under a false identity.””
I turned toward Vanessa.
She looked confused.
“Then who arranged it?””
The detective opened another file.
A bank transfer.
A payment from a company owned by Marcus.
The recipient was a private medical facility.
The date was the same night Andre disappeared.
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Marcus saved him?””
Harris nodded.
“According to the financial records, yes.””
I closed my eyes.
Everything was connected.
My father.
Andre.
Marcus.
Camille.
The company.
The money.
But one question remained.
Why had my father stayed hidden for eleven years?
At 5:30 a.m., Detective Harris allowed me to make a phone call.
I called the number that had appeared on my screen two nights earlier.
The call rang once.
Twice.
Then a familiar voice answered.
“Darius.””
I closed my eyes.
“Dad.””
“Are you safe?””
“I'm with the police.””
A long silence.
Then he sighed.
“I'm sorry.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You keep saying that.””
“I know.””
“Where are you?””
“At the lake house.””
“Why didn't you come back?””
He took a breath.
“Because I was waiting for Andre to expose himself.””
“Eleven years?””
“I needed evidence.””
“You had evidence. You had recordings. You had documents.””
“I didn't have the one thing that mattered.””
“What?””
“The original trust agreement.””
I looked at the table.
“The ledger?””
“No. The original agreement signed by Evelyn.””
I glanced at Vanessa.
She was listening.
“Mom has been alive this entire time.””
“Yes.””
“Why did you leave her?””
“I didn't.””
I went silent.
My father continued.
“Darius, I have been trying to reach her for years. Andre had people watching the hospital. Every time I got close, he moved her.””
I looked toward Detective Harris.
He was listening now.
“Dad, Andre is in custody.””
“Good.””
“Camille too.””
Another silence.
Then he said, “Is she safe?””
I frowned.
“Why do you care?””
“Because she's still your sister.””
I felt anger rising.
“She married me.””
“I know.””
“She tried to have me killed.””
“I know.””
“Then why are you worried about her?””
My father took a breath.
“Because I made the mistake of letting Andre raise her.””
I closed my eyes.
“You knew?””
“I knew he had taken her. I didn't know what he had done to her until it was too late.””
I looked at the flash drive.
“Dad, I'm coming to the lake house.””
“No.””
“I'm not asking.””
“Darius, listen to me. There's something you need to know before you come here.””
“What?””
He lowered his voice.
“Andre wasn't working alone.””
I felt cold.
“Who else?””
My father hesitated.
Then he said a name.
“Leonard.””
I stared at the phone.
“Leonard is helping Andre?””
“He has been helping him since the beginning.””
“But he gave me the documents.””
“Because he needed you to find the ledger.””
“Why?””
“To bring Andre back to Atlanta.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She shook her head.
My father continued.
“Leonard needed Andre alive long enough to sign the original trust agreement. Once that happened, the money would be transferred.””
I felt my hands tremble.
“Then why did Leonard tell me to be careful?””
“Because he wanted you to trust him.””
I stood.
“Where is he now?””
My father didn't answer.
Then I heard a noise.
A door opening.
A man's voice.
“Hello, Richard.””
My father stopped speaking.
I recognized the voice.
Leonard.
My stomach dropped.
“Dad?””
There was a brief struggle.
Then the phone fell.
I heard my father's voice.
“Darius, get away from the—”
The call ended.
I stared at the screen.
Detective Harris immediately stood.
“What happened?””
“Leonard is at the lake house.””
He picked up his radio.
“Get units to Lake Lanier. Possible hostage situation.””
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
“I'm coming.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“You're not going alone.””
“Vanessa—”
She looked directly at me.
“I'm your family. Let me act like it.””
I couldn't argue.
The drive to Lake Lanier took nearly an hour.
Detective Harris followed in an unmarked vehicle.
We reached the property shortly after seven.
The lake was covered in morning mist.
The house stood at the end of a long private driveway.
A large window overlooked the water.
The front door was open.
I stepped out of the car.
“Dad!””
No answer.
Vanessa moved toward the side entrance.
I followed.
Inside, the living room was in disarray.
A chair had been overturned.
A coffee cup lay shattered on the floor.
My father's reading glasses were near the fireplace.
I picked them up.
My hands began shaking.
Then I heard a voice.
“Darius.””
I turned.
Leonard stood at the top of the staircase.
He was holding a small handgun.
My father was sitting in a chair behind him.
His hands were tied.
A dark stain covered the shoulder of his shirt.
I froze.
“Dad!””
Leonard raised his free hand.
“Stay where you are.””
I stared at him.
“What did you do?””
“Nothing that can't be corrected.””
My father looked at me.
“Darius, don't listen to him.””
Leonard pressed the weapon closer to his side.
“Your father has always been a difficult man.””
I stepped forward.
“Let him go.””
Leonard shook his head.
“Not until we finish what we started.””
“What do you want?””
“The original trust agreement.””
I looked at him.
“Where is it?””
Leonard smiled.
“Your mother has it.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“No, she doesn't.””
Leonard's eyes shifted toward her.
Then he laughed.
“Oh, Vanessa.””
He looked at me.
“Did she tell you what she did with the second copy?””
I turned toward her.
Vanessa's face changed.
Leonard continued.
“She gave it to Camille eleven years ago.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Why?””
“Because Camille was supposed to protect the document.””
He smiled.
“But she kept it.””
I looked toward my father.
He nodded slowly.
Then he spoke.
“Darius, the original agreement isn't about the money.””
Leonard tightened his grip.
“Shut up.””
My father ignored him.
“It names the person who legally owns the entire estate.””
I stared.
“Who?””
My father looked directly into my eyes.
“You.””
Leonard laughed.
“That's what he wants you to believe.””
He pulled a folded document from his jacket.
Then he opened it.
I recognized the signature at the bottom.
My mother's.
But the name beside it wasn't mine.
It was Leonard's.
He looked at me.
“Your mother transferred everything to me before she disappeared.””
May you like
Then he smiled.
“And tonight, I'm going to make sure nobody ever questions it again.””
