Chapter 1: The Man Who Raised Her

“My real dad is walking me down the aisle.””

The words landed in the middle of the living room like a glass dropped onto hardwood.

Twenty-year-old Olivia Bennett stood in front of the fireplace in an elegant white lace wedding gown, one hand resting on her waist, the other holding her phone. Sunlight streamed through the tall windows, illuminating the delicate embroidery on her dress.

Across from her stood Richard Bennett, the man who had raised her since she was six years old.

He was holding a folder containing the final wedding paperwork.

For several seconds, he didn't move.

“I'm sorry,” Richard said quietly.

“What did you just say?””

Olivia exhaled impatiently.

“I said my real dad is walking me down the aisle.””

Richard looked at her as though he was waiting for her to laugh and admit it was a terrible joke.

She didn't.

“After I raised you for twenty years?”” he asked.

His voice was low, almost painfully controlled.

Olivia adjusted the lace sleeve on her shoulder.

“He's still my real father, Richard.””

Richard's fingers tightened around the folder.

Behind Olivia, an older woman named Margaret stood near the hallway. She had been Richard's wife for twenty-two years, and she had watched him become a father to Olivia in every way that mattered.

She said nothing.

But her eyes moved from Olivia to the folder in Richard's hands.

Richard swallowed.

“Is that what you believe?”” he asked.

“I'm not trying to hurt you,” Olivia replied.

“I just think it's important that my biological father gets this moment.””

“Important to whom?””

“To me.””

Richard nodded slowly.

He looked down at the wedding paperwork.

The room became so quiet that Margaret could hear the faint ticking of the antique clock above the fireplace.

Then Richard took a steady breath.

He opened the folder.

A thick invoice sat on top, its pages covered with itemized charges, deposits, and payment confirmations.

He pulled the bill free.

Olivia glanced at it.

“What are you doing?””

Richard didn't answer immediately.

He examined the paper for a moment, then carefully folded it along the center.

And tore it.

The sound was sharp.

Olivia blinked.

“Dad?””

Richard tore the paper again, separating the portion containing the final balance from the rest of the invoice.

He held it out to her.

“Then this belongs to him.””

Olivia stared at the paper.

“What?””

“Your biological father,” Richard said.

“Give the bill to your real father.””

She took it automatically.

Her eyes moved down the page.

Her face changed.

“Fifty-two thousand dollars?”” she whispered.

Richard straightened his jacket.

“Yes.””

“But... you already paid for everything.””

“I did.””

Olivia looked at the torn edge of the paper.

“Dad, this is the wedding bill.””

“I know what it is.””

“You can't just—”

“Why not?””

His question was so calm that it stopped her.

Richard looked directly into her eyes.

“You've made it clear that I'm not your father when it comes to the important moments. So I won't interfere with the man you've chosen to give that title to.””

Olivia's lips parted.

Margaret finally stepped forward.

“Richard, sweetheart...””

He lifted one hand gently.

“It's okay, Maggie.””

Then he looked back at Olivia.

“Give the bill to your real father.””

Olivia stood frozen.

For the first time that morning, she seemed to understand that something much bigger than the wedding procession had just changed.

But she still didn't understand why.

Not yet.

Three months earlier, Richard had been the happiest man in the Bennett household.

He had spent an entire Saturday comparing wedding venues with Olivia.

He had driven forty minutes to look at a historic estate because she had seen pictures of its garden online.

He had sat through three bridal appointments without complaining once.

When Olivia couldn't decide between two dresses, he had quietly told the saleswoman to put both on hold.

“Dad, they're both expensive,” Olivia had protested.

Richard had smiled.

“Then we'll make a decision when your mother gets here.””

“Margaret isn't my mother.””

The words had come out casually.

Richard had paused for half a second.

Then he had nodded.

“No, sweetheart. She's not.””

He hadn't argued.

He rarely did.

Olivia had entered his life when she was six, carrying a pink backpack and a stuffed rabbit with one missing ear.

Her biological father, Marcus Reed, had disappeared shortly after her birth. Her mother had died when Olivia was five.

Richard had been married to Olivia's aunt, Denise, at the time. When Denise died unexpectedly, he had made a decision that changed his entire life.

He adopted Olivia.

He didn't share her blood.

He didn't have to.

He learned how to braid her hair from online videos. He attended parent-teacher conferences, sat beside her during fevers, and worked overtime to pay for the dance classes she wanted.

When she broke her arm at nine, Richard slept in the hospital chair beside her bed.

When she graduated high school, he cried harder than she did.

And when she got engaged to Daniel Carter, Richard had been the first person she called.

“Dad! He proposed!””

Richard had been in the garage repairing an old cabinet.

He dropped his screwdriver.

“Are you serious?””

Olivia laughed.

“Yes!””

He pulled her into his arms and held her for a long moment.

“Then we're going to give you the wedding of your dreams.””

He meant every word.

The trouble began when Marcus Reed returned.

He appeared at a coffee shop near Olivia's apartment on a rainy Thursday afternoon.

Olivia had been sitting alone, scrolling through wedding inspiration pictures, when a man approached her table.

He was in his early fifties, tall, with a neatly trimmed beard and expensive-looking clothes.

“Olivia?””

She looked up.

“Yes?””

The man smiled nervously.

“I'm Marcus.””

Her phone slipped slightly in her hand.

“Marcus who?””

He pulled out a chair.

“Marcus Reed. Your father.””

For a moment, Olivia couldn't breathe.

She had seen photographs of him before. A handful of old pictures her mother had kept in a box.

But she had never heard his voice.

“Why are you here?”” she finally asked.

Marcus looked down at the table.

“Because I made mistakes.””

“That doesn't answer my question.””

He nodded.

“You're right. I should have been there. I should have helped your mother. I should have been there for you.””

Olivia studied his face.

“Then why weren't you?””

Marcus rubbed his palms together.

“I was young. I was scared. I made decisions I regret every day.””

“Twenty years?””

He looked away.

“I know.””

Olivia felt a strange mixture of anger and excitement.

She had spent years wondering what it would be like to meet him.

Now he was sitting across from her, apologizing.

And somehow, part of her wanted to believe him.

“Does Richard know you're here?”” she asked.

Marcus shook his head.

“I didn't want to interfere with your relationship.””

Olivia almost laughed.

“Richard raised me.””

“I know. And I'm grateful he did.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“But Olivia, there's something he could never give you.””

“What?””

“Your history. Your blood. The story of where you came from.””

Those words stayed with her long after the meeting ended.

That evening, she told Daniel about Marcus.

Daniel listened carefully.

“Are you sure you want to get involved with him right before the wedding?””

“He's my father, Daniel.””

“Richard is your father too.””

Olivia frowned.

“Why does everyone keep making this a competition?””

Daniel reached for her hand.

“Because you seem to be turning it into one.””

She pulled her hand away.

“I just want to know where I came from.””

Daniel didn't argue.

But he looked worried.

Over the following weeks, Marcus became a regular part of Olivia's life.

He called her every morning.

He sent old photographs of her mother.

He asked about her childhood.

He even remembered the name of the hospital where she was born.

He also began asking questions about the wedding.

“Who's paying for it?”” he asked one afternoon.

“Richard.””

“Everything?””

“Pretty much.””

Marcus whistled.

“That must be expensive.””

“Fifty-two thousand dollars.””

Marcus raised his eyebrows.

“That's a lot of money.””

“Richard wanted to give me everything.””

Marcus smiled faintly.

“Well, you deserve everything.””

Olivia didn't notice the way his expression changed.

She didn't notice that he asked about the venue, the guest list, the photographer, and the final payment deadline.

She was too busy enjoying the attention she had spent her childhood imagining.

One afternoon, Marcus brought her a small jewelry box.

Inside was a gold bracelet.

It wasn't expensive, but Olivia loved it.

“I thought you should have something from me,” he said.

She hugged him.

“Thank you, Dad.””

Marcus held her a little longer than necessary.

Across the street, Daniel watched from his car.

He had come to pick Olivia up for dinner.

He saw the embrace.

And he saw Marcus glance toward Richard's house before getting into his vehicle.

Something about the man bothered him.

That night, Daniel finally asked the question he had been avoiding.

“Olivia, what do you actually know about Marcus?””

She rolled her eyes.

“Why are you doing this?””

“I'm asking a simple question.””

“He's my father.””

“That's not an answer.””

She sat up.

“Maybe you're uncomfortable because I want him in my wedding.””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“I'm uncomfortable because a man who disappeared for twenty years has suddenly become the center of your life, and nobody seems to know why.””

Olivia stood.

“I'm not going to apologize for wanting my biological father.””

Daniel watched her walk into the bedroom.

He didn't follow.

Instead, he picked up his phone and searched Marcus Reed's name.

What he found made his stomach tighten.

Because Marcus Reed had not simply disappeared from Olivia's life.

May you like

He had disappeared from several other people's lives, too.

And one of them had recently filed a lawsuit against him.
