Chapter 6: The Signature That Changed Everything
Richard called the wedding coordinator before sunrise.
Emily answered with a tired voice.
“Mr. Bennett?””
“Emily, I received your email.””
“I'm glad. I was hoping you would contact me.””
“Has anything been transferred?””
“No. We placed everything on hold.””
Richard exhaled.
“Thank you.””
“But there's something you should know.””
He sat down.
“What?””
“The request came with an electronic authorization. It appears to have been submitted using Olivia's email address.””
Richard looked at the document.
“Can you tell whether she personally submitted it?””
“We're reviewing the access records. But the request included a digital signature.””
“Was the signature verified?””
“No. We don't verify legal identities through a typed signature alone.””
Richard rubbed his forehead.
“Please don't make any changes until I speak with Olivia.””
“Of course.””
“And Emily?””
“Yes?””
“Keep copies of everything.””
“I already have.””
Richard ended the call.
He looked at the wall clock.
6:18 a.m.
He didn't want to wake Olivia.
But he couldn't wait.
He called her.
She answered groggily.
“Dad?””
“Sweetheart, I need you to answer a question.””
“What happened?””
“Did you sign a document authorizing Marcus to change the wedding payment account?””
Silence.
Then Olivia sat up.
“What?””
“The venue received a request with your electronic signature.””
“I didn't sign anything.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes!””
“Did you give Marcus access to your email?””
Olivia went quiet.
Then she whispered, “I gave him my phone yesterday.””
Richard's stomach tightened.
“Why?””
“He said he wanted to show me something about the wedding.””
“Did he ask for your password?””
“I don't remember.””
“Olivia, think carefully.””
She pressed her fingers against her forehead.
“He asked me to unlock my phone because his battery was dead. He said he needed to check an email.””
Richard stood.
“Did you leave him alone with it?””
“For maybe ten minutes.””
Richard looked at the document again.
“Sweetheart, I think he may have used your information.””
Olivia's breathing quickened.
“No.””
“We need to find out.””
“No, Dad. He wouldn't do that.””
Richard didn't argue.
But he knew what the document meant.
Marcus had crossed a line.
And this time, there was a paper trail.
At 9:00 a.m., Olivia arrived at the wedding venue.
She wore jeans, a sweatshirt, and the gold bracelet Marcus had given her.
Emily met her in the office.
“Olivia, thank you for coming.””
“Can I see the document?””
Emily opened the file.
Olivia stared at the signature.
It looked exactly like hers.
The loops.
The final letter.
Even the small mark she made beneath her surname.
“Oh my God.””
Emily leaned forward.
“Did you authorize this?””
“No.””
“Did anyone have access to your email?””
Olivia hesitated.
Then she explained what had happened the previous afternoon.
Emily nodded.
“I'll provide the access records to the appropriate authorities if needed.””
Olivia looked at Richard.
“Why would he do this?””
Richard didn't answer immediately.
He didn't want to make the accusation for her.
She needed to see it herself.
Daniel entered the office.
Olivia turned.
“Daniel?””
He approached carefully.
“Hey.””
She looked at him.
“Did Marcus ever ask you to sign anything?””
Daniel nodded.
“He asked for my driver's license.””
“Did he ever show you a document?””
“No.””
Daniel pulled out his phone.
“But I have the email he sent me.””
He opened it.
Olivia read the message.
Marcus had written:
I need your identification to complete a small wedding administration update. Nothing financial, just routine paperwork.
Below it was an attachment.
Olivia's eyes moved across the screen.
It was a different authorization form.
Daniel's name appeared on the bottom.
The signature line was blank.
“He wanted you to sign this?”” she asked.
Daniel nodded.
“I refused because I didn't understand why he needed it.””
Olivia looked at Richard.
Then back at Daniel.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“I tried. You thought I was attacking your father.””
She looked down.
Daniel continued gently.
“I didn't want to fight with you, Liv. I just didn't want our wedding used to solve someone else's financial problems.””
Olivia's eyes filled.
She handed his phone back.
“I need to talk to Marcus.””
Richard shook his head.
“Not alone.””
Olivia looked at him.
“I'm not six years old anymore.””
“I know.””
“Then let me handle this.””
Richard paused.
Then he nodded.
“Okay. But Daniel and I will be nearby.””
Marcus arrived at the restaurant twenty minutes late.
He walked toward Olivia with a broad smile.
“There she is.””
She didn't stand.
“Sit down.””
His smile faded.
“What's wrong?””
Olivia placed a printed copy of the authorization on the table.
Marcus glanced at it.
Then he looked at her.
“Where did you get this?””
“The venue.””
He pulled out a chair.
“Okay. What's the issue?””
“You used my signature.””
Marcus sighed.
“Olivia, please.””
“Did you submit this?””
“I was trying to help.””
“Did you submit it?””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Your adoptive father is making you suspicious of everyone.””
Olivia stared at him.
“Stop calling him that.””
Marcus blinked.
“What?””
“His name is Richard.””
Marcus leaned back.
“Fine. Richard. Whatever you want to call him.””
Olivia pushed the paper closer.
“Why did you try to transfer the wedding payments?””
Marcus looked toward the window.
“I told you. I was organizing things.””
“You asked the venue to move fifty-two thousand dollars into an account under your name.””
“That's not what happened.””
“Then what happened?””
Marcus rubbed his face.
“There's a temporary financial arrangement. I was going to use the money to settle some outstanding expenses, then replace it.””
Olivia went completely still.
“Replace what money?””
Marcus sighed.
“It's complicated.””
“No. It's simple. You wanted my wedding money.””
He looked at her.
“I wanted to borrow it.””
Olivia felt the air leave her lungs.
“You wanted to borrow fifty-two thousand dollars?””
“Temporarily.””
“Without asking me?””
“I knew you'd say no.””
She stared at him.
“So you used my signature?””
Marcus's voice rose.
“I was doing this for our family!””
Olivia stood.
“Don't say family.””
People at nearby tables began looking over.
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Sit down.””
“No.””
“Olivia, you're embarrassing yourself.””
She grabbed her purse.
Then Marcus said something that made her stop.
“Your mother would have wanted me to have access to that money.””
Olivia turned slowly.
“Don't you dare use my mother to justify this.””
Marcus stood.
“I'm your biological father!””
“And Richard raised me!””
The words came out louder than she intended.
Marcus stared at her.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then he leaned forward.
“Do you really think that man loves you more than I do?””
Olivia's voice shook.
“I don't know what you love.””
She walked away.
Outside, Daniel was waiting beside Richard's car.
Olivia stopped in front of them.
Her eyes were red.
Richard opened the passenger door.
“Come on, sweetheart.””
She didn't move.
“Dad?””
Richard looked at her.
“Yes?””
“I think I made a terrible mistake.””
He reached for her.
But she stepped forward first and wrapped both arms around him.
Richard held her tightly.
He didn't say, I told you so.
He didn't ask why she hadn't listened.
He simply rested his hand against the back of her head.
For several seconds, Olivia cried into his shoulder.
Then she pulled away.
“I'm sorry.””
Richard swallowed.
“Don't apologize to me right now.””
“But I hurt you.””
He looked into her eyes.
“Yes. You did.””
Olivia's face crumpled.
Richard continued.
“But that doesn't mean I stop loving you.””
She covered her mouth.
Daniel turned away, giving them privacy.
Richard wiped a tear from her cheek.
“Now we need to fix this.””
The next afternoon, Olivia met with an attorney named Susan Miller.
Daniel accompanied her.
Richard had arranged the appointment, but he remained in the waiting room.
Susan reviewed the documents.
“Olivia, the immediate concern is the unauthorized financial transfer request.””
“Can he actually take the money?””
“Not if the account protections remain in place. But we should notify the bank, revoke any access Marcus may have obtained, and document every unauthorized attempt.””
Olivia nodded.
“What about the wedding?””
Susan turned to the next page.
“Your wedding contracts are separate from your mother's trust. Mr. Bennett paid the vendors directly. Marcus had no authority to transfer those funds.””
Olivia looked relieved.
“Can we stop him from contacting the vendors?””
“We can notify them that he has no authority to act on your behalf.””
Susan placed the documents in a neat pile.
“One more thing. I recommend you secure your email, bank accounts, and phone.””
Olivia nodded.
Then she hesitated.
“There's something else.””
Susan looked up.
“Go ahead.””
“Marcus told me my mother wanted him involved in my inheritance.””
Susan opened the folder.
“Do you have anything in writing?””
Olivia handed her the handwritten note.
Susan examined it carefully.
“This note is interesting.””
“What do you mean?””
“The language suggests your mother had concerns about Marcus's reliability. But we shouldn't draw legal conclusions from one sentence.””
Olivia looked down.
“Could you investigate the original documents?””
“Yes. We can request the complete estate and trust records.””
Susan closed the folder.
“There's one question I want to ask.””
Olivia looked up.
“Did Marcus ever have legal custody of you?””
“No.””
“Was he listed as your guardian after your mother's death?””
Olivia shook her head.
Susan nodded.
“Then his claim to authority over your inheritance may be weaker than he has led you to believe.””
That evening, Richard was sitting in the living room when Olivia came downstairs.
She held a small cardboard box.
“What's that?”” he asked.
“Things from Mom's old room.””
Richard looked surprised.
“I thought you had put everything away.””
“I did. But I found something.””
She placed the box on the coffee table.
Inside were old photographs, birthday cards, a small silver necklace, and a sealed envelope.
The envelope had her name written across the front.
Olivia picked it up.
Her fingers trembled.
“Dad, have you seen this before?””
Richard looked at the handwriting.
It belonged to Denise.
He shook his head.
“No.””
Olivia carefully opened the envelope.
Inside was a folded letter.
She unfolded it.
The first line made her eyes fill immediately.
My beautiful Olivia, if you're reading this, I hope you're old enough to understand something I couldn't explain when you were little.
She continued reading.
Richard watched her face change.
The letter described Denise's fear that Marcus would eventually return and try to claim a place in Olivia's life without accepting responsibility for the years he had missed.
It also described the day Richard agreed to adopt her.
Richard never asked what he would receive in return for loving you. He only asked what he needed to do to keep you safe.
Olivia began crying.
She read the next paragraph.
If Marcus ever returns, don't judge him only by what he says. Watch what he does when there is nothing for him to gain.
Olivia lowered the letter.
Richard looked away, giving her a moment.
Then she noticed a final sentence written at the bottom.
It was underlined twice.
There is one thing I never told you about your biological father, and Richard knows where to find the proof.
Olivia looked up.
“Dad?””
Richard's expression changed.
“What is it?””
She handed him the letter.
He read the final sentence.
His face went pale.
Olivia stood.
“What proof?””
Richard remained silent.
“Dad, what did Mom mean?””
He folded the letter carefully.
Then he looked at the photograph of Denise sitting on the porch with a baby Olivia in her arms.
“Your mother asked me never to tell you until you were old enough to understand.””
Olivia's heart began pounding.
“Tell me what?””
Richard stood and walked toward the study.
He opened a locked drawer and removed a small brown envelope.
He had kept it untouched for fifteen years.
He placed it on the table.
On the front, in Denise's handwriting, were five words:
Marcus Reed — Do Not Destroy.
Olivia stared at it.
Richard opened the envelope.
Inside was a document bearing the signature of a man who had been absent from Olivia's life for twenty years.

And the first line revealed that Marcus hadn't simply abandoned his daughter.
*He had once signed away his parental rights—and accepted money in exchange.*
