Chapter 4: The Woman Behind the Betrayal

The photograph landed on the table between Daniel and me.

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

Vanessa was standing beside a woman wearing a cream-colored designer coat. The woman's silver-streaked hair was neatly styled, and one hand rested on Vanessa's shoulder.

I recognized her immediately.

Margaret Brooks.

Daniel's mother.

My future mother-in-law.

The woman who had hugged me at our engagement party, called me her daughter, and insisted that she couldn't wait to see me walking down the aisle.

I picked up the photograph.

“When was this taken?””

Daniel glanced at the date printed beneath it.

“Three weeks ago.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Why were you meeting Margaret?””

Vanessa opened her mouth, but no words came out.

Daniel unfolded the accompanying letter.

“Because my mother hired her to stop this wedding.””

A collective gasp moved through the guests.

My father stepped closer.

“What did you just say?””

Daniel looked down at the paper.

“Three weeks before today, Vanessa sent me this photograph. She also sent me a message explaining what she and my mother had discussed.””

I turned toward him.

“You knew?””

His expression tightened.

“I found out two days ago. I wanted to verify everything before telling you.””

“Two days ago?”” I repeated.

“Camille, I know I should have told you immediately.””

“You let me spend two days believing everything was fine?””

“I was trying to protect you from another shock.””

I looked down at the pink roses on my wedding gown.

“Daniel, someone poured paint on my dress this morning. I think we're past protecting me from shocks.””

He lowered his eyes.

“I know. I'm sorry.””

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

It wasn't a happy laugh.

It was the nervous sound of someone watching a carefully constructed lie collapse.

“This is ridiculous,” she said.

“Margaret was only helping me.””

I turned toward her.

“Helping you do what?””

She folded her arms.

“Helping me explain that you and Daniel weren't right for each other.””

I stared at her.

“You thought you had the right to decide that?””

Vanessa looked around the room.

“Someone had to say it.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Vanessa, enough.””

But she continued.

“You barely know his family. You came into his life and suddenly everything changed. He stopped spending time with his friends.

He stopped answering my calls. Even his mother couldn't get him to listen.””

I looked at Daniel.

He seemed almost embarrassed.

Vanessa pointed toward me.

“And now you're standing here pretending this is some perfect love story.””

I took a breath.

“Why are you so angry that he chose me?””

Her face hardened.

“Because you don't understand what you've taken away.””

The room became silent.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Nothing was yours to lose.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You promised we'd always be there for each other.””

“We were friends.””

“We were more than friends!””

The words echoed through the hall.

My stomach tightened.

Daniel stared at her.

“Vanessa, we never had a relationship.””

She shook her head.

“You knew how I felt.””

“Yes. And I told you I didn't feel the same way.””

“You said you weren't ready!””

“I said I wasn't interested.””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

She turned toward the guests, as if she wanted them to understand her version of the story.

“I was there when his father died. I was there when he lost his job. I was there when he started his business. I knew him before any of you did.””

Daniel's voice remained calm.

“And I appreciated your friendship. But that didn't mean I owed you my future.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“You think he loves you because you're special?””

I didn't answer.

She continued.

“His mother knows what kind of woman you are.””

I felt my fingers tighten around the bouquet.

“What kind of woman am I?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she said something that made the room even quieter.

“She told me you were after his money.””

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“That's a lie.””

Vanessa pointed at him.

“Ask your mother!””

I turned toward Margaret.

She had been sitting in the front row throughout the confrontation.

Now she slowly stood.

Her face was pale, but her posture remained perfectly composed.

“Daniel,” she said, “this is not the place.””

He looked at her.

“You made it the place when you decided to interfere with my wedding.””

Margaret glanced at the guests.

“People are misunderstanding what happened.””

I took one step toward her.

“Then explain it.””

She looked at me.

For a moment, I saw the woman who had once invited me into her kitchen and shown me photographs of Daniel as a child.

Then her expression became cold.

“Camille, I never believed you were a suitable match for my son.””

My father inhaled sharply.

I felt Daniel's hand find mine.

Margaret continued.

“You have a different background, different expectations, and a very different understanding of what marriage means.””

I stared at her.

“What does that have to do with pouring paint on my wedding dress?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“I never asked Vanessa to do that.””

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

“You told me she needed to be stopped!””

Margaret's eyes flashed.

“Be quiet.””

That single sentence revealed more than any confession could have.

Vanessa stared at her.

“You said Daniel would eventually understand.””

“I said nothing of the sort.””

“You gave me the money!””

The guests began whispering.

Daniel stepped forward.

“What money?””

Margaret closed her eyes briefly.

“Vanessa, please don't make this worse.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You're worried about making it worse now?””

She turned toward Daniel.

“Your mother paid me to help create problems with the wedding arrangements. She said if Camille walked away, you would eventually come to your senses.””

I looked at Margaret.

“Did you pay her?””

Margaret didn't answer.

Daniel held up the document.

“There's a transfer receipt attached to the agreement.””

Margaret's expression changed.

I felt something inside me go completely still.

This wasn't simply a jealous bridesmaid.

This was a deliberate plan involving the groom's own family.

And I was standing in the middle of it wearing a dress that had been attacked because someone believed I could be frightened into surrender.

I looked at Daniel.

“Is there anything else I need to know?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation hurt more than the photograph.

“Daniel?””

He squeezed my hand.

“There is one more thing.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“No. Don't tell her that.””

Daniel looked at her.

“It's already over.””

He opened the envelope completely and removed a printed message.

I read the first line.

*If Camille discovers what happened to her wedding arrangements, make sure she never sees the original contract.*

My eyes moved down the page.

There were references to payments, private instructions, and an agreement to change the beneficiary of a particular financial document.

I looked up.

“What beneficiary?””

Daniel's expression became serious.

“My father left something in his estate for me. Something my mother has been managing.””

Margaret stepped forward.

“Daniel, that matter has nothing to do with Camille.””

He turned toward her.

“Then why did you mention her in the agreement?””

Margaret said nothing.

Daniel handed me the final page.

At the bottom was a sentence that made my blood run cold.

*The wedding must not proceed until the revised beneficiary documents are signed.*

I looked at Daniel.

“What documents?””

He took a slow breath.

Then he answered.

“Documents that would have given my mother control over the money my father left me.””

I stared at the paper.

And suddenly, I understood why Margaret had been so desperate to stop the wedding.

But the worst part was still waiting.

Because at the bottom of the final page was another signature.

One that didn't belong to Margaret.

May you like

It belonged to someone who had been sitting in the front row all morning.

My father.
