Chapter 5: My Father's Signature

I read the signature three times.

Each time, the letters remained the same.

Robert Brooks.

My father's name.

I looked at him.

He was standing beside the first row, his face drained of color.

“Dad?””

He didn't respond.

I held up the document.

“Why is your signature on this?””

My father slowly removed his glasses.

He looked at the paper.

Then at me.

“Camille, I can explain.””

The words felt like a slap.

I stepped backward.

“Please tell me that's not your signature.””

He swallowed.

“It is.””

For a moment, I couldn't hear anything else in the room.

The string quartet had stopped playing.

The guests were whispering.

Daniel stood beside me, but even he seemed uncertain about what to say.

I looked at the man who had taught me to ride a bicycle, who had worked two jobs after my mother died, and who had promised to walk me down the aisle.

“Why would you sign something like this?””

My father lowered his head.

“I didn't know everything that was in it.””

“Then why did you sign it?””

He glanced at Margaret.

She immediately looked away.

Vanessa stood near the table, holding her arms tightly against her body.

My father took a step toward me.

“Camille, please. Let me tell you what happened.””

I raised my hand.

“Don't come closer until you explain.””

He stopped.

Then he began.

“About a month ago, Margaret contacted me. She said Daniel was going through a difficult period with the family estate. She told me there were legal complications and that he needed someone he trusted to help resolve them.””

I looked at Daniel.

He shook his head.

“I never asked him to sign anything.””

My father nodded.

“I know that now.””

He continued.

“Margaret said the document was a temporary authorization. She told me it would protect Daniel's inheritance while the lawyers completed the paperwork.””

I looked down at the signature.

“And you believed her?””

“She showed me several pages. She said the lawyers had already reviewed everything.””

Margaret interrupted.

“That is exactly what happened.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“Then why did you hide the final agreement?””

Margaret's lips tightened.

“Because you were making emotional decisions.””

Daniel laughed without humor.

“Emotional decisions? You mean marrying someone you didn't choose?””

Margaret ignored him.

She looked at my father.

“Robert, you know I explained the situation.””

My father finally looked up.

“You told me Camille's marriage would complicate Daniel's finances.””

“It would have.””

“How?””

Margaret didn't answer.

I felt my throat tighten.

“Dad, what did she tell you about me?””

He looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.

Shame.

“She said you might be pressuring Daniel to change his father's estate arrangements.””

I stared at him.

“You believed that?””

“No, sweetheart. I didn't.””

“But you signed anyway.””

He closed his eyes.

“I thought I was helping.””

I shook my head.

“You didn't even ask me.””

“I didn't want to upset you.””

“You didn't want to upset me?””

My voice broke.

“You were willing to sign a document involving my future husband, his inheritance, and my marriage without telling me?””

My father looked down.

“I made a terrible mistake.””

Tasha moved closer and placed a hand on my shoulder.

I appreciated it, but I couldn't look away from my father.

For years, he had been my safest person.

When my mother died, he learned to cook the meals she used to make. He attended every school event, every graduation, every important moment.

He had taught me that family meant honesty.

Now I was discovering that even the people who loved me could make decisions that hurt me deeply.

Daniel approached the table.

“Robert, do you remember signing a second document?””

My father frowned.

“What second document?””

Daniel removed another sheet.

It was a printed copy of a financial authorization.

My father leaned forward.

“I've never seen that.””

Margaret's expression changed.

Daniel placed the paper beside the first.

“Your signature appears here too.””

My father shook his head.

“No. I signed one document. Nothing else.””

Daniel examined the page.

“Then someone copied your signature.””

Margaret stepped forward.

“That's an outrageous accusation.””

Daniel looked directly at her.

“Then explain why the document was submitted to the estate administrator.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“Submitted?””

He nodded.

“Two weeks ago, someone attempted to transfer management authority over my father's estate.””

My father looked horrified.

“What?””

Daniel continued.

“The transfer was rejected because the estate attorney required independent verification.””

Margaret's voice became sharper.

“You're twisting a routine administrative matter into a scandal.””

Daniel pointed at the document.

“Then why did you tell me last week that everything was already settled?””

She didn't answer.

I looked at the paper again.

A familiar phrase appeared near the bottom.

Pending beneficiary confirmation.

I didn't understand every legal detail, but I understood enough.

Margaret had tried to change something involving Daniel's inheritance.

And she had apparently used my father's signature to make it happen.

“Daniel,” I whispered, “why didn't you tell me this before?””

He looked at me.

“I was trying to get the original documents from the attorney. I didn't want to accuse my mother without proof.””

I swallowed.

“And the message Vanessa sent?””

He nodded.

“Vanessa discovered that my mother had been using her to create problems around the wedding. She sent me the photograph and the messages after she realized how far things had gone.””

Vanessa immediately protested.

“That's not why I contacted him!””

Daniel turned toward her.

“Then why did you?””

She looked down.

I noticed her fingers trembling.

For the first time, she seemed less interested in defending herself and more concerned about what else might be revealed.

“I didn't know about the second document,” she whispered.

Margaret turned sharply.

“Vanessa.””

But Vanessa continued.

“I only knew about the agreement concerning the wedding.””

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“What agreement?””

Vanessa looked at me.

Then she said something that made my heart race.

“Your wedding dress wasn't the only thing Margaret wanted destroyed.””

I froze.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa glanced toward the bridal suite.

“The original contract. The one with the venue.””

Tasha stepped forward.

“What does that have to do with anything?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Margaret wanted Camille to believe the wedding had been canceled. She wanted her to leave the venue before Daniel arrived.””

Daniel looked furious.

“Why?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Because if Camille left, Margaret could tell Daniel that she had walked away on her own. She thought he would postpone the marriage and reconsider everything.””

I looked at Margaret.

“Were you planning to make me look like I abandoned Daniel?””

Margaret finally lost her composure.

“I was trying to prevent a mistake!””

Her voice echoed through the hall.

She pointed at me.

“You have no idea what you're walking into. Daniel's father worked his entire life to build that family business. I will not watch someone come into this family and change everything.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Camille isn't taking anything from you.””

Margaret shook her head.

“You don't understand.””

“Then explain it.””

She looked at him.

For several seconds, her lips moved without sound.

Then she said:

“Your father never intended for you to control the estate alone.””

Daniel went completely still.

“What?””

Margaret reached into her handbag and removed a folded sheet of paper.

“This is the document your father signed before he died.””

Daniel took it.

He read the first paragraph.

Then his face changed.

I stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

Daniel didn't answer.

He read the page again, slowly.

His mother watched him.

Finally, he looked up.

“Where did you get this?””

“From your father's attorney.””

“You told me the original had been lost.””

Margaret's eyes narrowed.

“I told you what you needed to know.””

Daniel held the document tightly.

Then he looked at me.

“Camille, this changes everything.””

I reached for his hand.

“What does it say?””

He looked back at his mother.

“My father left the controlling interest in the family business to someone else.””

Margaret's expression became almost triumphant.

“Exactly.””

Daniel looked down at the signature.

May you like

Then he whispered:

“And that person isn't me.””
