Chapter 7: The Man My Father Trusted

My father stood beside his desk with the phone pressed against his ear, staring at the transaction history as if the numbers might change if he looked at them long enough.

I had never seen him like that.

Not when my mother died.

Not when he had to explain why she wasn't coming home from the hospital.

Not even when Vanessa threw the gray shirt at me and he discovered that my college money had been used to pay for designer purchases.

Those moments had hurt him. I could see that.

But this was different.

This time, the person on the other end of the phone was someone he had trusted.

"Explain the transfer, Daniel," Dad said.

A pause.

"No, I don't want to hear what Vanessa told you. I want to hear what you knew.""

I sat very still in the chair across from his desk.

Daniel.

The name sounded familiar, but I couldn't immediately place it.

Dad's oldest friend was named Daniel Brooks. They had known each other since college, long before I was born. Daniel had attended my parents' wedding, carried me on his shoulders at a family picnic when I was little, and sent me a birthday card every year until I turned twelve.

He had been at my mother's funeral.

I remembered him standing beside Dad outside the church, one hand resting on Dad's shoulder while the adults spoke in low voices.

When Dad had trouble sleeping after Mom died, Daniel sometimes came over with takeout food and stayed until midnight.

He had once told me that my mother would always be proud of me.

And now Dad was asking why Daniel's name appeared in my education account history.

"Marcus," Daniel said through the phone, his voice faint but audible, "you're jumping to conclusions.""

Dad's expression hardened.

"Then give me the facts.""

Another pause.

"I never asked Vanessa to take money from Nia.""

Dad looked down at the screen.

"Did you receive a transfer from her?""

Silence.

Then Daniel answered.

"Yes.""

I felt the air leave my lungs.

Dad closed his eyes for a moment.

"How much?""

"I don't remember the exact amount.""

Dad let out a humorless breath.

"That's becoming a familiar answer.""

"Marcus, listen to me. Vanessa said she was moving money around temporarily. She told me you knew about it.""

"Did you ask me?""

"I thought—"

"Did you ask me, Daniel?""

"No.""

Dad gripped the edge of the desk.

"Then why did you accept the money?""

Daniel's voice grew quieter.

"Because I was in trouble.""

Dad said nothing.

"I had a business problem," Daniel continued.

"A serious one. I needed to cover an obligation before the end of the month. Vanessa said she could help.""

"Help with money that belonged to my daughter?""

"She said it was money you controlled together.""

"That doesn't make it hers to give away.""

"I know that now.""

Dad's eyes flashed.

"You knew enough to ask questions before taking it.""

Daniel didn't respond.

I stared at the desk, trying to understand how someone who had comforted my father after my mother's death could accept money intended for my future.

I remembered Daniel bringing me a small science kit for my eleventh birthday. He'd sat at the kitchen table with me while I built a miniature solar system.

"You have a curious mind, Nia," he'd said.

"Never let anyone make you feel small for asking questions.""

I had believed him.

Now I wondered whether he had ever believed his own advice.

Dad ended the call without saying goodbye.

He placed the phone on the desk and remained standing.

I waited.

Finally, I asked, "Was he your best friend?""

Dad looked at me.

"Yes.""

"Do you think he knew it was my money?""

He sat down slowly.

"Vanessa told him I knew about the transfer. He says he believed her.""

"But he didn't ask you.""

"No.""

"Does that mean he knew?""

Dad considered the question carefully.

"It means he accepted money without confirming something he should have confirmed. I don't know yet what he understood about the source or what he intended to do with it.""

I looked at the transaction history.

"How much did he take?""

Dad turned the laptop toward himself.

"The records show a transfer of twelve thousand dollars to an account associated with Daniel's business.""

Twelve thousand.

The figure seemed impossible.

My education savings had been built from years of careful deposits, birthday gifts, and the money Dad continued setting aside after Mom died.

Now a man who had once helped me build a toy solar system had accepted twelve thousand dollars from it.

"Is he going to give it back?""

Dad's face softened.

"That's one of the things I'm going to address.""

I swallowed.

"What if he can't?""

"Then we'll deal with that problem too.""

He reached across the desk and took my hand.

"Nia, I need you to understand something. People can make decisions that hurt others, even people who once did good things for us. The good things don't disappear, but they don't erase the harm either.""

I looked down at our joined hands.

"How do you know who to trust?""

Dad was quiet for a long time.

"You don't know everything about a person just because you love them. Trust grows from what they do consistently, especially when telling the truth costs them something.""

I thought about Vanessa's apology the night before.

Then I thought about Daniel's silence on the phone.

Neither had given me enough reason to believe the problem was over.

Dad stood and walked to the window.

"I need to speak to Vanessa.""

"Should I leave?""

He turned toward me.

"You can, if you want. But you don't have to disappear every time someone else has made a mess.""

I stayed.

Dad called Vanessa downstairs.

She appeared a few minutes later, wearing dark trousers and a cream blouse. Her hair was neatly arranged, but the skin beneath her eyes looked tired.

When she saw the laptop, she stopped.

"What happened?""

Dad gestured toward the chair opposite his desk.

"Sit down.""

Vanessa remained standing.

"Marcus, I can't keep having the same conversation.""

"Then let's have a different one. Why did you transfer twelve thousand dollars to Daniel Brooks?""

Her face went completely still.

I watched her hands.

One finger curled into her palm.

"You spoke to Daniel?""

"Yes.""

"What did he say?""

"That you told him I knew about the transfer.""

Vanessa looked away.

Dad continued.

"He also said he was in financial trouble and accepted the money.""

She sat down abruptly.

"Daniel was supposed to return it.""

"When?""

"Soon.""

"When?""

She pressed her lips together.

"I don't know.""

Dad leaned forward.

"How much money have you transferred to him?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I don't remember every transaction.""

"Then look at the records.""

She glanced at the screen.

"I was trying to help someone.""

"With Nia's education savings?""

"I intended to replace everything.""

Dad's voice remained low.

"That doesn't answer my question.""

Vanessa rubbed her temples.

"Daniel told me his business was going to collapse. He said he needed money immediately or he would lose everything he'd built.""

"So you gave him Nia's money.""

"I thought I could replace it.""

"With what?""

She didn't answer.

Dad stood.

"Vanessa, you have used money from our daughter's education account to pay your brother, to buy luxury goods, and to help my friend. I need you to explain how you intended to replace all of it.""

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"I thought you would help me if I ran out of time.""

Dad stared at her.

"Help you do what?""

"Pay it back.""

The room went silent.

I felt my chest tighten.

She had taken the money believing my father would eventually replace it.

Not because she'd misunderstood the account.

Not because she'd thought the money was hers.

Because she expected him to cover the damage once she could no longer hide it.

Dad sat down again.

"You expected me to pay back money you took from my daughter?""

Vanessa's tears began falling.

"I didn't know what else to do.""

"You could have told me the truth.""

"And risk losing you?""

Dad looked at her for a long moment.

"You risked losing me when you decided that keeping me was more important than telling me the truth.""

She covered her face.

I stared at the woman who had spent years telling me to be grateful for everything I received.

She had demanded gratitude for food, shelter, and a few inexpensive clothes while taking money from the very future my father had promised to protect.

For the first time, I understood that her behavior had never been about the price of a shirt.

It had been about power.

She wanted to decide who deserved what.

And she wanted everyone else to accept her decisions without question.

Dad closed the laptop.

"I've contacted the bank about securing the account. I'm also consulting an independent financial professional to review the transfers.""

Vanessa lowered her hands.

"You're bringing strangers into our marriage?""

"I'm bringing professionals into a financial matter that has gone beyond what I can verify through your explanations.""

"What about our marriage?""

Dad's face tightened.

"I can't make that decision today.""

She stared at him.

"After everything we've built?""

He glanced toward me.

"I have a responsibility to Nia that doesn't disappear when our marriage becomes difficult.""

Vanessa followed his gaze.

For a moment, I expected her to blame me again.

Instead, she looked at the floor.

"I never wanted her to lose her future.""

I answered quietly.

"Then why did you spend the money?""

She looked up.

Her mouth trembled.

But no answer came.

That afternoon, Daniel arrived at our house.

Dad had asked him to bring the documentation associated with the transfer. Daniel came alone, carrying a thick envelope and looking as though he hadn't slept.

He stood in the living room, facing Dad.

"I know you're angry.""

Dad pointed toward the armchair.

"Sit down.""

Daniel sat.

"I should have called you before accepting anything," he said.

"I know that.""

Dad remained standing.

"Why didn't you?""

"Because I believed Vanessa.""

"Why?""

Daniel rubbed his hands together.

"She said you were moving money between accounts to cover a temporary expense. She told me you'd approved it.""

"And you never thought to verify that?""

Daniel looked ashamed.

"I should have.""

Dad opened the envelope.

Inside were printed bank records and a letter from Daniel's business accountant.

"I've brought everything I could find," Daniel said.

"My accountant is reviewing the transactions. I'll cooperate with whatever review you need.""

Dad examined the first page.

"Can you repay the twelve thousand dollars?""

Daniel swallowed.

"Not all at once.""

"How much can you repay now?""

"I need to review my business finances.""

Dad's eyes hardened.

"You accepted the money without reviewing where it came from.""

Daniel flinched.

"You're right.""

It was the first answer he'd given that didn't contain an excuse.

Dad looked at him for a long moment.

Then he said, "I need the truth from everyone involved. No more assumptions. No more promises without documentation.""

Daniel nodded.

"I understand.""

He glanced toward me.

"Nia, I'm sorry.""

I looked at him.

I remembered the science kit.

I remembered the birthday cards.

I remembered him telling me never to let anyone make me feel small for asking questions.

"I believed you," I said.

His face crumpled slightly.

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

My voice trembled.

"You told me my future mattered. Then you took money that was supposed to help me have one.""

Daniel looked down.

"I didn't know it was your money.""

"But you knew it wasn't yours.""

He closed his eyes.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Dad collected the documents.

"That's enough for today.""

Daniel rose slowly.

Before leaving, he turned toward Dad.

"I know I've damaged something I can't fix with an apology.""

Dad didn't answer.

The front door closed behind him.

I looked at my father.

"Will you ever trust him again?""

Dad stared at the door.

"I don't know.""

Then he placed the envelope on his desk and looked at the transaction history one more time.

"There is still something we haven't explained," he said.

"What?""

He pointed to a series of transfers made over several months.

"The dates don't match the story Vanessa gave us. Some of these transfers happened before Daniel asked for help.""

I stared at the screen.

"Then why did she send him money?""

Dad scrolled further.

The final entry showed a transfer to an account whose name I didn't recognize.

He read it twice.

Then he picked up the phone.

"There's someone else involved.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who?""

Dad looked at me.

"I don't know yet. But the bank has identified an account connected to a business I have never dealt with.""

He paused.

"And the first transfer to that account happened nearly a year before Vanessa bought those shopping bags.""

I thought about the whisper I'd overheard.

If he finds the rest, everything is over.

Now I understood why she'd been afraid.

The shopping trip hadn't started the secret.

It had only exposed it.

And somewhere in the transaction history was another name that could explain why Vanessa had been so desperate to keep the money hidden.

Dad looked at the screen again.

Then he said, almost to himself, "I need to find out who owns this account.""

I stared at the numbers.

May you like

For the first time, I wondered whether the person who had taken my college money was only one part of a much bigger story.

And I was beginning to fear what we'd discover next.
