Chapter 3: The Name Behind the Wedding
Marcus stared at the document.
For several seconds, he couldn't make sense of what he was seeing.
The name appeared in black ink beneath a series of banking details.
*TERRENCE COLEMAN.*
His best friend.
His business partner.
The man who had stood beside him that morning and told him to be careful.
Marcus slowly lifted his eyes.
"James, explain this.""
James glanced toward the ballroom doors.
"Not here.""
"Explain it.""
James took a breath.
"Three weeks ago, our compliance department flagged an attempted change to the beneficiary information on one of your investment accounts. The request wasn't completed, but it used information connected to your private financial records.""
Marcus looked down again.
"And Terrence?""
"His name appears on the destination account.""
Marcus felt the floor shift beneath him.
"That doesn't make sense.""
"I know.""
"Terrence has been my friend for seventeen years.""
James didn't argue.
He simply opened another page.
"That's why I wanted you to see this before making any decisions.""
Marcus scanned the document.
The account was registered under a small investment company called TC Strategic Holdings.
He recognized the initials.
But he refused to accept what they might mean.
"Who owns this company?""
"According to the filing, Terrence Coleman.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
The wedding music was still playing faintly behind the ballroom doors.
Somewhere inside, guests were probably discussing what had happened.
Danielle was probably still crying.
And now, his best friend was connected to an attempted transfer of his money.
"How much?"" Marcus asked.
"Nothing was successfully transferred. But the authorization request involved a proposed amount of $2.4 million.""
Marcus slowly exhaled.
"Did Terrence submit it?""
"We haven't established that. The request came through a third-party account with credentials connected to an authorized business contact.""
"Which contact?""
James hesitated.
"Danielle Brooks.""
Marcus looked up sharply.
"What?""
"Her name appears on the access record.""
The hallway seemed to go quiet.
Marcus took the paper and studied it again.
Danielle.
Terrence.
Two people he trusted.
One financial transaction.
And a wedding that had nearly made him legally vulnerable to the woman behind it.
"Don't contact either of them," Marcus said.
James nodded.
"I was going to recommend the same thing.""
"Freeze the affected accounts. Review every authorization. And make sure nobody moves anything.""
"Already started.""
Marcus handed the papers back.
"One more thing.""
"Yes?""
"I want to know when Danielle first contacted Terrence about my finances.""
James looked at him carefully.
"I'll find out.""
A moment later, the ballroom doors opened.
Terrence stepped into the hallway.
"Marcus!""
Marcus turned.
His friend approached with a concerned expression.
"Man, what happened? I've been looking everywhere for you.""
Marcus watched him.
For seventeen years, Terrence had been the person he called when life became difficult.
They had shared cheap apartments, business failures, late-night meals, and impossible dreams.
Terrence had been there when Marcus's father died.
He had been there when Reedstone Technologies nearly collapsed during its first year.
He had even helped Marcus prepare his proposal to Danielle.
"Where have you been?"" Terrence asked.
"Talking to James.""
Terrence glanced at the briefcase.
"About what?""
Marcus studied his face.
"Business.""
Terrence gave a nervous laugh.
"Seriously? On your wedding day?""
Marcus nodded.
"Some business doesn't wait.""
Terrence placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Listen, I know you're upset. But don't let one bad conversation ruin your entire life.""
Marcus looked at the hand.
Then he looked at Terrence.
"That's interesting.""
"What?""
"You sound exactly like someone who knows more than he's telling me.""
Terrence's hand slowly dropped.
"Come on, man. What are you talking about?""
Marcus said nothing.
Terrence looked toward James.
"Did he tell you something?""
James closed his briefcase.
"I think Mr. Reed should discuss any financial questions with his legal team.""
Terrence frowned.
"Financial questions?""
Marcus stepped closer.
"How well do you know Danielle?""
Terrence blinked.
"What?""
"I asked you a question.""
"She's your fiancée. Of course I know her.""
"Do you?""
Terrence looked uncomfortable.
"Marcus, you're making this weird.""
Marcus almost smiled.
"Am I?""
Terrence glanced toward the ballroom.
"Listen, the guests are still inside. People are asking questions. We should get you out of here.""
Marcus nodded.
"You're right.""
He walked toward the elevator.
Terrence followed.
"Where are you going?""
"Home.""
"What about Danielle?""
Marcus pressed the elevator button.
"What about her?""
"You're not seriously ending everything over this, are you?""
Marcus turned.
"Tell me something, Terrence.""
"What's that?""
"If you discovered that someone was planning to marry you for your money, what would you do?""
Terrence hesitated.
"I'd want proof.""
Marcus nodded.
"Good answer.""
The elevator doors opened.
Marcus stepped inside.
James followed.
Terrence remained in the hallway.
Just before the doors closed, Marcus looked at his friend one last time.
"Enjoy the reception.""
The doors shut.
At 12:40 p.m., Marcus arrived at his Buckhead home.
The house was quiet.
A housekeeper had left fresh flowers on the dining table, and a bottle of champagne sat chilling beside two crystal glasses.
Everything had been arranged for the newlyweds.
Marcus stood in the doorway for a long moment.
Then he walked to the dining room and picked up the photograph beside the flowers.
It was a picture of him and Danielle taken during their engagement dinner.
She was laughing.
He was looking at her.
He remembered that night clearly.
Danielle had held his hand beneath the table and whispered that she couldn't wait to spend the rest of her life with him.
He had believed every word.
Now he placed the photograph facedown.
His phone rang.
*MOM.*
He answered.
"Hey, Mom.""
Evelyn Reed's voice was gentle.
"Baby, where are you?""
"Home.""
"Are you alone?""
"Yes.""
There was a pause.
Then she asked, "What happened?""
Marcus sat down.
"How did you know something happened?""
"Because I raised you. And because your best friend just called me asking whether you've lost your mind.""
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
"Terrence called you?""
"He said you embarrassed Danielle in front of hundreds of people and refused to explain yourself.""
Marcus laughed without humor.
"Of course he did.""
"Marcus, I don't need the whole story right now. I just need to know you're safe.""
He looked toward the window.
"I'm safe, Mom.""
"Then come over tonight.""
"I might.""
Evelyn was quiet for a moment.
Then she said something that made his stomach tighten.
"Marcus, there's something I've wanted to tell you for a while.""
"What is it?""
"I didn't trust Danielle from the beginning.""
"I know.""
"No. You don't understand. It wasn't just a mother's instinct.""
Marcus sat straighter.
"What do you mean?""
Evelyn took a breath.
"Last summer, I received a phone call from someone who claimed to know Danielle. She told me that Danielle had been asking questions about your father's estate.""
Marcus frowned.
"What questions?""
"She wanted to know whether your father had left you anything outside the company. She also asked whether the family trust could be accessed through marriage.""
Marcus went still.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"I tried. You told me I was being unfair.""
He remembered.
He remembered the argument in her kitchen.
He remembered raising his voice.
He remembered telling her that Danielle deserved a chance.
His mother continued.
"I didn't want to come between you and the woman you loved. But I was afraid she was looking at you as an opportunity.""
Marcus lowered his head.
"Who called you?""
"I don't know. She refused to give me her name.""
"Do you still have the number?""
"I saved it.""
"Mom, please send it to me.""
"I will. But there's something else.""
Marcus waited.
"She mentioned a man.""
"What man?""
Evelyn hesitated.
"She said Danielle wasn't working alone.""
Marcus looked toward the photograph on the table.
"Was it Terrence?""
"I don't know, sweetheart.""
For a moment, he couldn't speak.
His mother softened her voice.
"Come over tonight. We can talk properly.""
"Okay.""
After the call ended, Marcus sat alone in the dining room.
He had spent the morning discovering that his future wife wanted his money.
Now he was discovering that the people closest to him might have helped her get it.
His phone vibrated.
A message appeared from Danielle.
We need to talk. Please don't do this to us.
Another message arrived.
I know you're angry, but I love you.
Marcus stared at the screen.
Then a third message appeared.
You don't understand what you've done. You just ruined everything.
He frowned.
That wasn't an apology.
It sounded like a warning.
Before he could respond, another message came through from an unknown number.
You should stop investigating Terrence. He isn't the person you need to worry about.
Marcus read it twice.
Then a second message appeared.
Ask your mother what happened to your father's first business partner.
His fingers went cold.
His father had died seven years earlier.
And as far as Marcus knew, his father's first business partner had disappeared from the family history long before Marcus was old enough to understand what happened.
He called James immediately.
"James, I need you to look into something.""
"What's going on?""
"I want every document connected to my father's original company. Every partnership agreement, every trust, every financial record you can find.""
"All right. Is there a particular name?""
Marcus looked at the message again.
Then he typed the name into the search bar.
*DAVID WHITAKER.*
His father's first business partner.
James went silent when Marcus read it aloud.
"Mr. Reed?""
"What?""
"That's the name I was hoping you wouldn't bring up.""
Marcus stood.
"Why?""
James took a breath.
"Because David Whitaker was also the person who introduced Danielle Brooks to your family.""
Marcus stared at the phone.
"What did you just say?""
And before James could answer, the front doorbell rang.
Marcus looked toward the entrance.
He wasn't expecting anyone.
He walked to the security monitor and checked the camera.
A woman stood outside.
She wore a dark blue coat, held a leather handbag, and looked directly into the camera.
Marcus didn't recognize her immediately.
Then she lifted her face.
He recognized her from an old photograph in his father's office.
It was the same woman his mother had mentioned.
The woman who had called Evelyn the previous summer.
She pressed the doorbell again.
Then she held up a small envelope.
Marcus opened the intercom.
"Can I help you?""
The woman looked straight into the camera.
"My name is Rebecca Whitaker," she said.
Marcus's grip tightened around the phone.
She continued.
"I'm the widow of your father's former business partner.""
She paused.
"And I know exactly why Danielle Brooks wanted to marry you.""
May you like
Then she added five words that made Marcus's blood run cold.
"Because your father wasn't innocent.""
