Chapter 8: The Bride's Confession
Marcus stared at the photograph.
His father stood outside the clinic, wearing the same dark overcoat he had worn on the night of his death.
Harold Bennett stood beside him.
And in the background was Terrence.
Marcus opened the door fully.
"Get inside.""
Danielle entered cautiously.
Evelyn stood near the living room entrance, her expression unreadable.
The moment she saw Danielle, her face hardened.
"You have a lot of nerve coming into this house.""
Danielle lowered her eyes.
"Mrs. Reed, I understand.""
"No, you don't.""
Evelyn stepped closer.
"You stood in front of my son and promised to love him while secretly planning to take his money. You made him believe he was building a family with you.""
Danielle swallowed.
"I know.""
"Then why are you here?""
Danielle looked at Marcus.
"Because Harold is going to destroy both our families.""
Marcus held up the photograph.
"Start explaining.""
Danielle sat down.
Her hands trembled.
"My grandfather was David Whitaker. My mother was Patricia. She spent most of her life trying to recover what your father took from our family.""
Marcus remained standing.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I knew you'd never trust me if I told you the truth.""
"You didn't give me a chance.""
"I know.""
"You deliberately hid your family connection.""
"Yes.""
"You planned to marry me and divorce me after six months.""
Danielle closed her eyes.
"Yes.""
Evelyn made a disgusted sound.
Marcus looked at Danielle.
"Then why should I listen to you?""
Danielle removed another document from her handbag.
"Because I was wrong about almost everything, but I wasn't wrong about Harold.""
She placed the paper on the table.
It was a copy of an email dated eight months earlier.
The sender was Harold Bennett.
The recipient was Danielle.
The subject line read:
*THE REED MARRIAGE STRATEGY.*
Marcus began reading.
Your marriage to Marcus Reed will provide the access necessary to complete the recovery process. Once the marriage is legally recognized, we can request disclosure of the legacy trust records.
He scrolled further.
The six-month period is important. It allows sufficient time to establish marital financial claims while avoiding unnecessary complications from a prolonged marriage.
Marcus looked up.
"You discussed my marriage like a business transaction.""
Danielle's voice cracked.
"Yes.""
"Did you ever intend to stay married?""
She looked at him.
"Not initially.""
"Not initially?""
Danielle looked down.
"Something changed.""
Marcus gave a humorless laugh.
"What changed? You discovered I was harder to rob than you expected?""
"No.""
"Then what?""
Danielle began crying.
"I fell in love with you.""
Marcus stared at her.
For a moment, he didn't speak.
Then he asked, "When?""
"About three months ago.""
"Three months?""
She nodded.
"After your father was buried?""
Danielle wiped her cheeks.
"Yes.""
Marcus stepped closer.
"Did you hear yourself? You were still planning the divorce while telling me you loved me.""
"I was trying to find a way out.""
"You could have told me the truth.""
"I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
"Harold.""
Marcus folded his arms.
Danielle took a breath.
"My mother died when I was young. She spent her final years trying to recover the Whitaker ownership records. She believed your father had taken something that belonged to us.""
"Did she know my father?""
"Yes. She met him several times.""
"What happened between them?""
Danielle looked at Evelyn.
"Your father promised my mother he would restore the family's ownership interest. He said he had made a terrible mistake and wanted to correct it.""
Evelyn looked stunned.
"Richard never told me that.""
Danielle nodded.
"Because Harold stopped him.""
She opened her handbag and removed a second photograph.
This one showed Patricia Brooks standing with Richard Reed outside a restaurant.
The date was printed on the back.
Seven years earlier.
Three days before Richard's death.
Danielle continued.
"My mother told me that your father was going to give her the original ledger. But Harold found out. After that, my mother received threats.""
Marcus stared at the photograph.
"What happened to her?""
Danielle looked away.
"She died six months later.""
Evelyn covered her mouth.
"Was it an accident?""
Danielle nodded slowly.
"That's what we were told.""
Marcus looked at her.
"Do you think Harold was involved?""
"I don't know. But my mother kept a recording before she died.""
She reached into her bag and removed a small memory card.
"She gave this to me when I was twenty-one. She told me to keep it safe and never trust anyone connected to the Reed family.""
Marcus took the card.
"What's on it?""
"Her final conversation with Harold.""
James stepped forward.
"We'll need to preserve the original recording and verify its authenticity.""
Danielle nodded.
"I understand.""
Marcus looked at her.
"Why bring it to me now?""
Danielle lowered her head.
"Because Harold told me what happened to your father.""
The room went silent.
Marcus felt his pulse quicken.
"What did he tell you?""
Danielle looked at him.
"He said your father had suffered a medical emergency at the clinic. He said Harold arranged for him to be moved into his car because he didn't want the police investigating the trust documents.""
Evelyn gripped the back of a chair.
"Are you saying Richard was alive when they put him in the car?""
Danielle nodded.
"Harold told me that he had already died before the vehicle reached the road.""
Marcus stepped back.
"Who was driving?""
Danielle looked at him.
"Terrence's father.""
Marcus's expression hardened.
"Why?""
"Because Harold needed someone he could control.""
James shook his head.
"That's not enough to establish what happened. We need medical records, the original accident report, and independent evidence.""
Danielle nodded.
"I have something else.""
She opened her phone.
A recording appeared on the screen.
Marcus looked at the file name.
*HAROLD_CALL_FINAL.mp3*
"Where did you get this?""
"Harold sent it to me by mistake. He meant to send it to someone else.""
She pressed play.
Harold's voice filled the room.
"Everything is under control. Danielle will get married, Terrence will handle the transfer, and Marcus will never know what his father signed.""
A second voice answered.
Marcus recognized Terrence.
"What if he finds the original ledger?""
Harold laughed.
"Then we'll remind him that his father wasn't the innocent man he thinks he was.""
The recording continued.
Terrence asked, "And the accident?""
Harold's voice became colder.
"That matter is finished. The driver is dead, the medical records are sealed, and nobody is going to reopen a seven-year-old case.""
Marcus felt his stomach turn.
The recording ended.
Evelyn sank into the armchair.
James immediately made a copy of the file.
"We need to get this to the authorities.""
Marcus looked at Danielle.
"Why didn't you bring this to the police?""
"Because Harold controls people inside the legal system. My mother tried that years ago. Every complaint disappeared.""
"That doesn't mean we stop.""
"I know.""
Marcus looked toward the window.
He had spent the last twenty-four hours uncovering pieces of a story that had been hidden for years.
His father had betrayed David.
Harold had exploited the betrayal.
Danielle had been recruited to access the trust.
Terrence had helped.
And somehow, his father's death had become part of the cover-up.
Marcus turned back.
"Tell me one thing.""
Danielle looked up.
"What?""
"Did you ever intend to tell me the truth before the wedding?""
She hesitated.
"No.""
Marcus nodded.
"Then you didn't come here because you suddenly became honest.""
Danielle's eyes filled again.
"I came because Harold threatened my family. He told me that if I didn't help him get the ledger, he would release documents that would destroy my mother.""
"Your mother is dead.""
"My younger brother, Daniel, isn't.""
Marcus frowned.
"You have a brother?""
She nodded.
"He's twenty-four. Harold has been paying for his medical treatment.""
Marcus looked at James.
"Medical treatment?""
Danielle wiped her eyes.
"My brother has a serious kidney condition. Harold offered to cover the expenses. In return, he expected me to follow his instructions.""
Marcus's expression hardened.
"That's how he controlled you?""
"Partly.""
"Why didn't you tell me about your brother?""
"Because I was ashamed.""
Marcus walked toward the window.
He didn't know whether to believe her.
Her story explained some things.
It didn't excuse the cruelty of her plan.
"You still chose to deceive me," he said.
"I know.""
"You still used my love against me.""
"I know.""
"And when you stood at the altar, you asked me to sign the marriage certificate before anything else.""
Danielle lowered her head.
"Because Harold told me that once we were married, I could request access to the trust.""
Marcus turned.
"So even after I exposed you, you were still following his instructions.""
Danielle began sobbing.
"I was terrified.""
Marcus looked at her for a long time.
Then he spoke.
"Being afraid doesn't give you the right to destroy someone else's life.""
She nodded.
"I know.""
Evelyn stood.
"Marcus, she needs to leave.""
Danielle rose.
"Please. Just let me help you stop Harold.""
Marcus didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at James.
"Have her make a full statement. Everything. No omissions. Then we decide what to do.""
Danielle looked relieved.
But James raised a hand.
"Before we go any further, we need to establish whether that recording is genuine.""
He turned toward Marcus.
"And we need to know whether Terrence is still cooperating with Harold.""
Marcus picked up his phone.
He called Terrence.
No answer.
He tried again.
This time, someone picked up.
But it wasn't Terrence.
A man's voice came through.
"Mr. Reed?""
Marcus frowned.
"Who is this?""
"My name is Officer Daniel Harris. I'm with the Atlanta Police Department.""
Marcus stood straighter.
"Where is Terrence?""
There was a pause.
"Mr. Coleman was found unconscious in his apartment approximately twenty minutes ago.""
Marcus's stomach dropped.
"What happened?""
"We believe someone entered his residence.""
"Is he alive?""
"He's being transported to the hospital.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"Did he say anything?""
The officer hesitated.
"Before losing consciousness, he repeatedly mentioned your name.""
Marcus gripped the phone.
"What did he say?""
The officer lowered his voice.
"He said, 'Tell Marcus the original ledger is only half the story.''"
Marcus looked at James.
Then the officer added:
"He also said someone had taken his father's old police file.""
At 3:40 p.m., Marcus stood outside Terrence's hospital room.
A police officer guarded the door.
Terrence was conscious but weak. A bandage covered his forehead, and his right arm was immobilized.
Marcus entered.
Terrence looked at him.
"Man...""
Marcus approached the bed.
"What happened?""
Terrence swallowed.
"Someone came looking for the documents.""
"Who?""
"I didn't see his face.""
"Did he take anything?""
Terrence nodded.
"My father's old file.""
Marcus leaned forward.
"Why was that file important?""
Terrence closed his eyes.
"Because my father didn't just drive your father's car.""
Marcus felt his chest tighten.
"What else did he do?""
Terrence looked at him.
"He was paid to switch the vehicles.""
Marcus stared.
"Switch what vehicles?""
"The car your father was supposed to be in... and the car that was found after the accident.""
Marcus slowly stepped back.
"Why?""
Terrence's eyes filled.
"Because your father was still alive when they moved him from the clinic.""
Marcus couldn't speak.
Terrence continued.
"My father told me the truth before he died. He said Harold had arranged everything. Your father was supposed to disappear before he could expose the trust.""
Marcus felt sick.
"Did my father know?""
Terrence shook his head.
"No. He thought they were taking him home.""
Marcus stared at him.
Then Terrence whispered:
"But the person who ordered the switch wasn't Harold.""
Marcus stepped closer.
"Who was it?""
Terrence looked toward the door.
Then back at Marcus.
"It was someone who wanted your father dead before he could change the trust.""
He paused.
"Someone who inherited everything after he died.""
Marcus's mind raced.
The company.
The trust.
The family estate.
He already knew Harold had benefited.
But there was another person.
Someone whose name appeared in the inheritance records.
Someone who had been trusted with the family finances.
Terrence whispered the name.
May you like
"Your mother.""
Marcus froze.
