Chapter 5: The Secret Robert Took to His Grave

For a moment, nobody understood what Danielle had said.

Then Charles dropped the DNA report.

It fluttered to the carpet beside his shoes.

“No,” he whispered.

Danielle looked down at Isaiah.

“I'm sorry.””

“No.”” Charles shook his head harder.

“That isn't possible.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Uncle Charles—”

“Don't call me that!””

The words exploded out of Dad's mouth.

Marcus stopped.

Charles pointed toward the report.

“My brother was dead before these children were born.””

“The report is older than the babies,” Marcus replied.

“The reference sample was collected when my father was alive. The comparison was completed later using preserved laboratory records and verified family samples.””

Dad stared at him.

“Then explain it to me like I'm a fool, because right now that's exactly how I feel.””

Marcus took a breath.

“My father had a relationship with Danielle's biological mother before he married. That relationship produced a child.””

Danielle lifted her eyes.

“Me.””

Charles looked at her.

“Robert was your father?””

She nodded.

“My adoptive parents told me when I was sixteen. Robert confirmed it when he found me.””

The room tilted in my mind.

Danielle wasn't merely our sister.

She was our cousin.

The same man we'd grown up calling Uncle Robert was her biological father.

And now she was standing in our living room, holding a baby who shared his DNA.

Jaylen sat down heavily.

“Hold on. If Robert was Danielle's father, then why did Mom say Dad was her father?””

“She never said that,” Danielle replied.

“She let him believe I was his daughter because she knew he'd never stop looking for me if he thought I'd died.””

Charles stared at his wife.

“You used my grief to hide your affair?””

Mom recoiled.

“No!””

“Then what am I supposed to believe?””

She pressed her hands against her chest.

“I didn't have an affair with Robert!””

Danielle's voice sharpened.

“Then explain why you signed the original birth certificate.””

Mom looked at her.

“Because you were born in my body!””

“And because you wanted everyone to believe Charles was my father.””

“That's not what happened!””

“Then tell us what happened!””

Mom looked toward the window.

The sunlight had shifted across the floor. A few hours earlier, that room had felt familiar, safe, ordinary.

Now every object seemed to belong to strangers.

My father's favorite chair.

The framed family photographs.

The cabinet where Mom kept the albums from our childhood.

All of it seemed contaminated by the things we had never known.

I looked at Charles.

“Dad, did you know Mom and Robert were close?””

He nodded slowly.

“They were friends. I trusted him more than anyone.””

His voice broke.

“He was my brother.””

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“I know.””

Dad looked back at the report.

“And the babies?””

Danielle stepped forward.

“Malachi is Jamiya's son. Isaiah is mine. Robert was the biological father of both.””

Jaylen shook his head.

“That means—”

“It means Malachi and Isaiah are half brothers,” Danielle said.

“And Jamiya and I share the same biological father.””

She swallowed.

“I didn't know about Jamiya until recently.””

I stared at her.

“How could you not know?””

“Because Robert never told me he had another child. He was ashamed of the life he'd built around his secrets.””

Marcus nodded.

“My father told me about Jamiya shortly before he died. He wanted to contact her, but he became ill before he could.””

“Then why didn't you?”” Jaylen demanded.

“Because I didn't know where she was. I didn't know her married name, her address, or whether she even knew Robert was her father.””

“Jamiya isn't married,” I said.

“I know that now.””

Danielle's eyes filled.

“Six months ago, I found an old letter from Robert. He mentioned a young woman named Jamiya and said he hoped she'd never have to suffer because of his mistakes.””

She looked toward my mother.

“That's when I started looking for her.””

Mom shook her head.

“You should have left her alone.””

“Why?””

“Because you don't understand what Robert was like!””

Marcus's expression hardened.

“You're right, Letreya. I don't understand why you spent years protecting him while destroying everyone else.””

Mom flinched.

Charles sat down again.

“Tell me the truth,” he said.

Mom looked at him.

“The entire truth. No more half answers.””

She pulled a tissue from her pocket, pressed it against her face, and began.

“Robert and I were young when we met. Before I met you, Charles, I loved him.””

Dad closed his eyes.

“I know,” he whispered.

Mom shook her head.

“No, you don't. You think you know, but you don't understand what happened.””

She stared at the family photographs on the mantel.

“Robert was charming. He made promises he couldn't keep. He told me he would leave his girlfriend, but he never did. Then I found out I was pregnant.””

Danielle's expression tightened.

“That's why you gave me away?””

“I was afraid.””

“You could have told him.””

“I did!””

The words came out so sharply that everyone jumped.

Mom covered her mouth.

Then she continued in a quieter voice.

“I told Robert I was pregnant. He said he'd help me, but he didn't want to destroy his family. He asked me to wait until he could figure things out.””

Charles's face darkened.

“And while he figured things out, you married me.””

Mom nodded.

“I loved you, Charles.””

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you keep his secret?””

“Because by the time I understood what Robert was capable of, I was already married to you. I was pregnant with Jamiya. I had a family. I was afraid that if the truth came out, I would lose everything.””

Danielle let out a bitter laugh.

“So you made sure I lost everything first.””

Mom's tears spilled over.

“I thought giving you to Denise would give you a better life.””

“You didn't ask me.””

“You were a baby!””

“And then I grew up, Mom. I became a person. I wrote you letters.

I searched for you. You had years to tell me the truth.””

Mom lowered her head.

“I know.””

Charles stared at her.

“What about Jamiya?””

Mom's face changed.

The pain in her expression became something more guarded.

“What about her?””

“Why did you try to take her baby?””

“I didn't.””

Jaylen stood.

“I heard you threaten her!””

“I was trying to help her!””

“You told her she wasn't fit to be a mother!””

“Because she was making the same mistakes I made!””

The words rang through the living room.

Mom froze.

So did Charles.

I looked at her.

“What mistakes?””

She sank into the chair.

“Jamiya started asking questions about Robert last year. She found some of his old belongings in the storage unit. Letters.

Photographs. A journal.””

Danielle leaned forward.

“What journal?””

Mom looked at her.

“The one Robert kept during the years he was seeing me.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“My father had a journal?””

Mom nodded.

“Jamiya found it. She read things she wasn't supposed to read.””

“What things?”” I asked.

Mom pressed her lips together.

“Things about money. About the house. About a trust Robert had created.””

Charles went still.

“What trust?””

Mom looked at him.

“He left money for his children.””

Marcus's expression changed.

“He told me there was a trust, but he never gave me the details.””

Mom wiped her eyes.

“There were conditions. The money was supposed to go to his biological children and their descendants. But Robert didn't trust me to tell the truth, so he made sure the documents couldn't be accessed without proof of parentage.””

Danielle stared at her.

“That's why you tried to stop Jamiya from finding the journal.””

Mom didn't answer.

Marcus leaned over the table.

“Where is it?””

“I don't know.””

“You're lying.””

“I gave it back to Jamiya!””

Jaylen stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because she threatened to tell Charles everything.””

Dad's face hardened.

“You were afraid of losing the money.””

“No!”” Mom shouted.

“I was afraid of losing my family!””

I looked around the room.

“Mom, you have spent years tearing this family apart to keep us together.””

She stared at me.

For a second, I thought she might slap me.

Instead, she began to cry again.

Marcus gathered the documents into a neat stack.

“There is another reason Robert left the trust,” he said.

“He believed one of his children would eventually need protection.””

Charles looked up.

“Protection from whom?””

Marcus glanced at Mom.

“From whoever had been controlling the money.””

Mom stood abruptly.

“You have no proof I ever touched it.””

Marcus removed a bank statement from the folder.

“I have proof that someone transferred money out of the trust three times in the last decade.””

He placed the statement on the table.

The first transfer was dated twelve years earlier.

The second, eight years earlier.

The third had occurred just four months ago.

Charles leaned forward.

The account holder's name was partially obscured, but the final four letters were unmistakable.

*…REYA.*

Dad looked at his wife.

“You took money from Robert's trust?””

Mom shook her head.

“I never stole anything.””

“Then why is your name on this account?””

“I was managing the estate!””

“Robert died twelve years ago!””

“And someone had to take care of the paperwork!””

Marcus tapped the last transfer.

“This one happened four months ago. The same month Jamiya started asking questions.””

Mom's expression crumpled.

Charles rose slowly.

“Letreya, what did you do?””

She looked at him.

“I did what I had to do.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means I paid for things! I paid bills! I kept this house! I made sure our children had everything they needed!””

“With money that belonged to Robert's children?””

Mom's voice broke.

“I thought I could replace it!””

Marcus shook his head.

“The trust is almost empty.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Jaylen asked the question that changed everything.

“Does that mean Malachi and Isaiah have nothing?””

Marcus looked at the babies.

“No. Not necessarily.””

He pulled another document from the folder.

“My father left one final instruction. If any of his children came forward with verified DNA evidence, the trust could be restored through a separate account he'd established before his death.””

Charles stared at him.

“Then why are you here?””

Marcus's expression became grave.

“Because the separate account has one condition.””

“What condition?””

Marcus looked directly at Danielle.

“The original birth certificate of the child Letreya claimed was dead must be presented to the estate lawyer.””

Danielle's face drained of color.

“I don't have it.””

Mom whispered, “I do.””

Every head turned toward her.

She looked toward the hallway.

“I kept it in a box. I never threw it away.””

Charles took a step toward her.

“Where is the box?””

Mom hesitated.

Then she said, “In the basement.””

Marcus closed the folder.

“Then we'd better find it.””

But before anyone could move, Danielle's phone buzzed.

She glanced at the screen.

Her face went white.

“What is it?”” I asked.

She turned the phone toward us.

A message had arrived from an unknown number.

Stop looking for the birth certificate. Robert wasn't the only one who knew the truth.

Beneath the message was a photograph.

It showed Jamiya standing outside a motel, holding a small suitcase.

And behind her, half-hidden in the shadows, was a man none of us recognized.

Danielle whispered, “That's the man who came to see Robert the night he died.””

Charles stared at the image.

“Who is he?””

Danielle looked at Mom.

And for the first time since she'd entered our house, my mother looked genuinely terrified.

“His name,” she whispered, “is David Bennett.””

Marcus went completely still.

“That can't be.””

Charles turned toward him.

“Who is David?””

Marcus's voice dropped.

“My father's firstborn son.””

May you like

Then he looked at the photograph again.

“And the person Robert spent his last years trying to keep away from this family.””
