Chapter 6: The Man Who Came Back for His Inheritance

Nobody moved after Marcus said the name.

David Bennett.

Robert's firstborn son.

A man none of us had ever met, yet somehow a man my mother feared more than anyone in the room.

Charles reached for the phone.

“Let me see that photograph.””

Danielle handed it to him.

Dad studied the image. Jamiya stood outside a motel beneath a flickering sign, her shoulders hunched against the cold. She held a small suitcase in one hand and her phone in the other.

The man behind her was tall, broad-shouldered, and dressed in a dark jacket. His face was partially obscured, but his eyes were visible.

There was something unsettlingly familiar about them.

Charles looked at Marcus.

“Why have I never heard of David?””

Marcus rubbed his jaw.

“Because my father never talked about him.””

“Your father had another son?””

“Yes.””

“And nobody thought that was worth mentioning?””

Marcus's expression tightened.

“My father said David was dangerous.””

Mom backed away from the table.

“That's putting it mildly.””

Danielle turned toward her.

“You knew him?””

Mom nodded.

“I met him once. Years ago.””

“When?””

“The summer before Robert died.””

Charles frowned.

“What was he doing here?””

Mom's hands began to tremble.

“He came looking for money.””

Marcus shook his head.

“My father told me David wanted nothing to do with the family.””

“He lied,” Mom replied.

The bitterness in her voice startled everyone.

“David wanted everything to do with this family. He wanted the house, the trust, the business interests, and every dollar Robert had ever earned.””

Charles looked down at the photograph.

“And Jamiya?””

Mom closed her eyes.

“Jamiya found something in Robert's journal that David wanted.””

“What?””

“I don't know.””

Jaylen slammed his palm against the table.

“Stop saying you don't know! Every time someone asks you a question, you suddenly become helpless!””

Mom flinched.

“Don't speak to me like that.””

“Then stop treating us like children!””

Malachi began to fuss in my arms.

I carried him toward the couch, supporting his head as I settled into the cushions. I checked his diaper, adjusted his pale blue onesie, and whispered to him until his breathing steadied.

Across the room, Danielle rocked Isaiah.

For a moment, our eyes met.

There was a strange comfort in seeing her care for her baby. Whatever else she was, whatever secrets had brought her into our lives, she was a mother trying to protect her child.

And I was beginning to understand that the adults who had raised us had spent years protecting themselves instead.

Marcus paced toward the window.

“We need to find Jamiya.””

“Agreed,” Charles said.

“Call her.””

Marcus took out his phone.

He dialed.

The call went straight to voicemail.

He tried again.

Nothing.

Jaylen pulled out his own phone and sent a message.

Jamiya, please answer. We know about David. Tell us where you are.

He stared at the screen.

“She has to be somewhere safe.””

Danielle looked down at her baby.

“She thought she was safe when she left Malachi with you.””

Jaylen's face crumpled.

“I know.””

“She trusted you.””

“I know!””

His voice cracked.

He looked away, ashamed.

I reached across the couch and touched his arm.

“Jaylen, you did what you thought was right.””

“But she asked us not to bring him here.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

Jaylen swallowed.

“Before she left, she told me not to bring Malachi to Mom and Dad. She said if anything happened, I should take him to a friend of hers.””

My stomach dropped.

“Why didn't you tell us that?””

“Because I thought she was being paranoid. I thought she was scared and not thinking clearly.””

He looked toward our mother.

“Now I'm not so sure.””

Charles turned to Letreya.

“What did you do to make Jamiya afraid of coming home?””

Mom sat down.

For several seconds, she stared at her hands.

Then she whispered, “I told her about David.””

Marcus stopped pacing.

“What exactly did you tell her?””

“That David was coming back. That he believed Robert had left money for him. That he was looking for the journal.””

“And you didn't tell anyone else?””

Mom shook her head.

“I didn't want to scare the children.””

Charles let out a hollow laugh.

“The children? Letreya, they're adults. And one of them has a baby you tried to take away from her.””

Mom's eyes filled.

“I didn't want Jamiya to make the same mistake I made.””

Danielle's expression hardened.

“You keep saying that. What mistake?””

Mom looked at her.

“Trusting Robert.””

The room went silent.

Marcus slowly turned around.

“What do you mean?””

Mom pressed her fingertips together.

“Robert wasn't the man everyone thought he was. He had a talent for making people believe he was helping them. But he always wanted something in return.””

Charles shook his head.

“You're talking about my brother.””

“Yes, Charles. Your brother. The man who made promises to me, to Danielle, to his other children, and to anyone who was foolish enough to believe him.””

Marcus's face darkened.

“Then why did you keep his journal?””

“Because it contained names, dates, and account numbers. Things that could have destroyed more than one person.””

“Whose names?””

Mom looked at the floor.

“David's.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“What did David do?””

She shook her head.

“I don't know everything.””

“Tell us what you know.””

Mom took a long breath.

“Robert told me that David had been taking money from his business for years. At first, it was small amounts. Then larger ones. When Robert confronted him, David threatened to expose every secret Robert had ever kept.””

Charles frowned.

“Why would that matter?””

“Because Robert had built his life on secrets. He had children he never acknowledged, relationships he denied, and money he moved between accounts to keep people from discovering what he'd done.””

Marcus looked sick.

“My father was stealing?””

Mom met his eyes.

“He was hiding money from the people who depended on him. And David knew how to use that against him.””

Charles sat down heavily.

“So this is about money.””

“No,” Danielle said.

“It's about control.””

Everyone turned toward her.

She held Isaiah close.

“David doesn't want money because he needs it. He wants it because he believes everything Robert owned belongs to him.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“My father told me David always thought he was the rightful heir.””

“Why?”” Jaylen asked.

“Because he was Robert's firstborn son. Robert had him with a woman named Evelyn before he married. When their relationship ended, Evelyn moved away. David grew up believing his father had abandoned him.””

Mom spoke quietly.

“And Robert never corrected that belief.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

“Robert kept visiting David in secret. He paid for his education, helped him buy a house, and gave him money when he needed it. But he refused to acknowledge him publicly because he was afraid his business partners would find out about his other family.””

Marcus looked toward the photograph.

“So David knew about Danielle and Jamiya.””

“I believe he did,” Mom said.

“And when Robert died, David became convinced there was more money hidden somewhere.””

Charles rubbed his face.

“Why didn't the police investigate?””

“Because Robert's death was ruled natural.””

Danielle's voice grew quiet.

“But it wasn't natural, was it?””

Mom looked at her.

“I don't know.””

Marcus took a step toward her.

“You're lying again.””

“I'm not!””

“Then why are you afraid of David?””

Mom's lips trembled.

“Because the night Robert died, David came to this house.””

Charles stood so quickly that his knee struck the coffee table.

“What?””

Mom nodded.

“It was late. I heard the doorbell. When I opened the door, David was standing there. He said he needed to speak to Robert about the trust.””

Marcus looked stunned.

“My father was already in the hospital.””

“Yes.””

“Then how could David have come here to see him?””

Mom shook her head.

“He said Robert had called him.””

Charles stared at her.

“Robert couldn't have called him. He was unconscious.””

Mom's face crumpled.

“I know that now.””

“Did you let David inside?””

She nodded.

Charles looked as though he might collapse.

“You let a stranger into our house while your brother was dying?””

“He wasn't a stranger!””

“Then what was he?””

Mom lowered her head.

“A threat.””

For a moment, the only sound in the room was the soft rustling of the babies' blankets.

Then Danielle asked, “What happened after you let him in?””

Mom swallowed.

“He asked me where Robert had hidden the journal. I told him I didn't know. He said he knew about the trust and that he would find it, with or without my help.””

“Did he threaten you?””

“Yes.””

“What did he say?””

Mom looked directly at Charles.

“He said if I didn't help him, he would tell you who Danielle's father really was.””

Charles went rigid.

Mom continued.

“He said he would expose every secret Robert had ever kept. He told me that if the truth came out, the family would never recover.””

“And you believed him?”” Danielle asked.

“I was terrified.””

“So you kept lying.””

Mom nodded.

“I thought if I could find the journal first, I could keep everyone safe.””

Marcus looked at the folder on the table.

“But you never found it.””

“No.””

“And now David is looking for Jamiya because she has it.””

Mom's silence was answer enough.

Jaylen grabbed his keys.

“I'm going to find her.””

Charles caught his arm.

“Not alone.””

“Dad, we don't have time!””

“Exactly. That's why you don't go charging out of here without a plan.””

Jaylen looked ready to argue, but then his phone vibrated.

A new message.

He read it.

His face changed.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He held up the screen.

The message was from an unknown number.

Your sister is safe for now. If you want her to stay that way, bring the blue bag to the old Bennett warehouse before midnight.

Below the message was an address.

Marcus went pale.

“The old warehouse?””

Charles turned toward him.

“What warehouse?””

“The building where my father kept his business records.””

“Why would David want the diaper bag?””

Marcus looked toward Malachi.

“Because Jamiya may have hidden something in it.””

I glanced at the blue bag beside the couch.

The same bag that had carried the photograph, the letter, and the hospital papers into our home.

I reached for it.

“Then we check it before we do anything.””

Mom stood.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“What now?””

“Don't open that bag.””

Her voice was almost pleading.

Charles stepped toward her.

“Why?””

Mom's eyes moved to the bag.

“Because if David believes Jamiya put the journal in there, he may be willing to hurt anyone who has it.””

Jaylen's face hardened.

“Then we take it to the police.””

Marcus shook his head.

“If David has been watching Jamiya, he may already know where she is. We need to contact the authorities, but we shouldn't send anyone to that warehouse without explaining what we're dealing with.””

Charles nodded.

“Marcus, call the police. Tell them about the threat and the missing woman.””

Marcus pulled out his phone.

Jaylen carefully settled Malachi into the portable carrier we'd brought from the apartment. I checked that the infant's head was supported, secured the straps, and placed the carrier on the couch beside me.

Danielle remained near the doorway, holding Isaiah.

“I can't leave him alone,” she said.

“You won't,” I replied.

I looked at her.

“You've spent your whole life being kept away from this family. You're not going through this alone now.””

Her eyes filled.

For the first time, she smiled at me.

It was small, uncertain, and painfully familiar.

Then my phone buzzed.

An incoming call.

Jamiya.

I answered immediately.

“Jamiya?””

Her breathing was ragged.

“Tiana, listen to me. You need to get out of the house.””

My blood ran cold.

“What? Why?””

“David knows where you are.””

I looked toward the windows.

The curtains were open.

The street outside was quiet.

“Jamiya, we're calling the police. Where are you?””

“Don't tell Mom anything else.””

“I won't. Just tell me where you are.””

“I'm at the warehouse.””

Jaylen rushed toward me.

“Put her on speaker!””

I did.

Jamiya's voice filled the room.

“He said he'd trade the journal for Malachi. He said if I brought him the baby, he'd let me go.””

Charles's face twisted with horror.

“He wants the child?””

“Yes,” Jamiya whispered.

“Because Robert left something for him, too.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“What did Robert leave?””

Jamiya began to cry.

“A letter. The one that proves who really owned the trust.””

Mom gripped the back of the chair.

“Jamiya, don't do anything stupid.””

“Don't tell me what to do!””

Her voice cracked.

“You've been telling me what to do my whole life!””

Then came a loud metallic bang through the phone.

Jamiya screamed.

Jaylen shouted her name.

“Jamiya!””

The line crackled.

A man's voice replaced hers.

Deep.

Calm.

Almost amused.

“Hello, Charles.””

My father froze.

The man continued.

“It's been a long time.””

Charles gripped the phone.

“David?””

“That's right.””

“Where is Jamiya?””

“Safe. For the moment.””

Charles's voice shook with rage.

“If you touch her—”

“Save the threats. I didn't call to negotiate with you.””

A pause.

Then David spoke again.

“I called because I know what Robert left behind. And I know your wife has spent twenty-five years keeping it from you.””

Mom covered her mouth.

David chuckled softly.

“So here's what's going to happen. Bring me the blue bag, and I'll give you Jamiya.””

“And if we don't?”” Charles asked.

David's voice turned cold.

“Then I'll tell the whole world what happened the night your daughter was born.””

He paused.

“And I'll make sure the next child in this family doesn't get a chance to grow up.””

The call ended.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Malachi sleeping in his carrier.

Then at Isaiah in Danielle's arms.

Two innocent babies.

Two lives already tangled in a history they hadn't chosen.

My father turned toward my mother.

“What happened the night Danielle was born?””

Mom's face had gone completely white.

“I told you,” she whispered.

“I gave her away.””

Charles shook his head.

“No. You told me part of the story.””

He held up the hospital record.

“David knows something you haven't told us.””

Mom looked toward the front door.

Then she whispered the words that made Marcus drop his phone.

“Because Danielle wasn't the only baby born that night.””

She looked at the two infants.

“There were twins.””

Charles stared at her.

“Twins?””

Mom nodded, tears streaming down her face.

“One baby went home with me. The other was taken before you ever saw her.””

Danielle clutched Isaiah closer.

I felt my knees weaken.

Charles looked at his wife.

“Who took the other baby?””

Mom's lips trembled.

Then she looked directly at Danielle.

“Robert.””

And just as Danielle opened her mouth to ask why, a final message appeared on Jaylen's phone.

It contained a photograph of an old hospital bracelet.

The name printed on it was almost illegible.

But the date was clear.

May you like

And beneath the date, someone had written three words in black ink:

*SECOND BABY: ALIVE.*
