Chapter 4: The Message on the Altar
For three seconds, nobody in St. Matthew's Chapel moved.
Then Marcus grabbed Lily's hand, pulled her behind him, and looked toward the open doors.
“Everyone away from the entrance,” he ordered.
“Now.””
The guests stared at him.
Marcus raised his voice.
“You heard me! Move away from the doors!””
Chairs scraped against the floor. A woman gathered her two children and hurried toward the side aisle. The wedding photographer lowered his camera, his face drained of color.
Ethan stood beside Rachel, staring at the message glowing on Vanessa's phone.
*IF SHE'S ALIVE, GET THE GIRL OUT FIRST.*
His daughter.
The words seemed to pulse beneath the chapel lights.
“Rachel,” he whispered, “who sent that?””
“I don't know.””
“Look at me. Who sent it?””
“I don't know, Ethan!”” Her voice cracked.
“I wish I did.””
Vanessa snatched the phone from the altar.
“Give me that!”” Ethan shouted.
She recoiled, gripping the device against her chest.
“It's my phone!””
“Then unlock it.””
“No.””
“Unlock it, Vanessa.””
She looked around at the guests, searching for someone who might still take her side. Nobody moved to help her.
Even the woman who had spent the morning praising Vanessa's beauty now stared at her as though she were a stranger.
Vanessa swallowed.
“You can't force me to do anything.””
Ethan extended his hand.
“I'm not asking you to hand me your life story. I'm asking you to explain why someone is threatening my daughter.””
“Your daughter is safe!””
“Then why did that message say to get her out first?””
Vanessa's eyes darted toward Lily.
Rachel noticed.
“Don't look at her,” she snapped.
Vanessa turned on her.
“You think you can walk back into my life and start giving orders?””
“Your life?”” Rachel's voice shook with disbelief.
“You mean the life you built out of my disappearance?””
Marcus stepped between the women.
“Both of you, stop. We need to get Lily out of here.””
“No,” Rachel said immediately.
Marcus looked at her.
“Rachel, we can't stay in a room with someone threatening the child.””
“I'm not leaving without knowing who sent that message.””
“Your daughter comes first.””
Rachel looked toward Lily.
The little girl stood pressed against Marcus's side, her small fingers wrapped around his jacket. She was trying to be brave, but Ethan could see her trembling.
He crouched in front of her.
“Hey, sweetheart.””
Lily looked up.
“Are we going home?””
Ethan struggled to answer.
He wanted to promise her that everything would be fine. He wanted to lift her into his arms and carry her through the chapel doors into a world where her mother was alive and no one wanted to hurt them.
But the message on Vanessa's phone had destroyed the comfort of easy promises.
“We're going somewhere safe,” he said.
“And I'm staying with you.””
“Promise?””
He held out his little finger.
“I promise.””
Lily hooked hers around it.
Then she whispered, “Daddy, I think I know the person who sent the message.””
Ethan went still.
“Who?””
Lily looked toward Vanessa.
“The man in the blue car.””
Marcus knelt beside them.
“Lily, what man?””
She swallowed.
“I saw him last night. He was outside Uncle Marcus's house.””
Marcus's face changed.
“You didn't tell me that.””
“I was scared.””
Ethan gently took her hands.
“Did you see his face?””
She nodded.
“He came to the front gate when Mommy was inside. He talked to Aunt Vanessa on the phone.””
Vanessa's lips parted.
“That isn't true.””
Lily flinched at her voice.
Ethan immediately stood.
“Don't speak to her.””
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
“You can't keep treating me like a criminal because a frightened child tells a story!””
“Then stop giving us reasons to doubt you.””
For a moment, Vanessa seemed ready to strike back. Instead, she looked down at her phone.
Her thumb moved over the screen.
Rachel noticed.
“Ethan, she's deleting something.””
He lunged forward.
Vanessa twisted away, but Marcus caught her wrist.
“Don't,” he warned.
“Let go!””
“Put the phone down.””
Vanessa struggled, knocking a silver vase from the altar. It struck the floor, scattering white roses across the polished wood.
Ethan took the phone from her hand.
She stared at him in disbelief.
“You can't do that!””
He checked the screen. The threatening message was still there, but the conversation above it had disappeared.
“Who were you talking to?””
“No one.””
“Who sent the message?””
“I don't know!””
“Then why did you delete the conversation?””
“Because I don't want you looking through my private messages!””
Ethan stared at her.
For years, he had mistaken her willingness to help for honesty. She had been present at every vulnerable moment, offering advice, handling paperwork, and anticipating his needs before he voiced them.
Now he understood how easily care could become control when one person knew exactly where another person was weakest.
He handed the phone to Marcus.
“Call the police.””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“Ethan, don't do this.””
Marcus took out his own phone.
“I'm doing it.””
“You'll destroy this family!””
Marcus looked at her with exhausted disgust.
“You already did.””
He stepped toward the side aisle to make the call.
Ethan turned back to Rachel.
“Give me the flash drive.””
Rachel's hand closed around it.
“Why?””
“Because whatever's on it might tell us who's threatening Lily.””
“And what happens if you find something you don't like?””
“Rachel, this isn't the time.””
“It's never the time with you, is it?””
The accusation struck harder than he expected.
She looked away, breathing unevenly.
“I spent two years waiting for the day I could tell you what happened. I rehearsed the conversation in my head a thousand times. I imagined you asking where I'd been, whether I'd suffered, whether I'd ever stopped loving you.””
Her voice faltered.
“Instead, the first thing you ask me for is evidence.””
Ethan's anger disappeared.
“Rachel…”
“I know you want answers. So do I. But I can't give you back those two years. I can't give Lily back the birthdays I missed or the nights she cried herself to sleep.””
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“And I can't pretend that seeing you standing beside Vanessa in that chapel didn't hurt.””
Ethan lowered his head.
“I never stopped loving you.””
Rachel shut her eyes.
“Don't.””
“It's true.””
“Then why did you marry her?””
“We weren't married yet.””
“You were standing at the altar.””
“I thought she was carrying my child.””
“And you thought I was dead.””
He had no answer.
Rachel wiped her cheek with the back of her hand.
“I know how this looks. I know what everyone must think. But I didn't disappear because I wanted you to suffer.””
“I believe you.””
She looked at him sharply.
“Do you?””
“Yes.””
“Then believe this. Someone planned the accident. Someone made sure I couldn't contact you. And someone has been watching Lily.””
Ethan nodded slowly.
“Okay.””
Rachel hesitated, then placed the flash drive in his hand.
“Don't plug it into your computer.””
“Why?””
“Because I don't know whether the files are being monitored. I copied the evidence from a machine that had been compromised. If someone knows what's on here, they may be able to track who accesses it.””
Ethan curled his fingers around the drive.
“Who helped you?””
Rachel glanced at Marcus, who had finished his call and was returning toward them.
“A former investigator. He helped me verify the financial records. He said the money was being moved through several companies connected to your development projects.””
“What's his name?””
“Daniel Brooks.””
Ethan recognized the name.
Daniel had worked as an independent auditor on one of his largest commercial projects before leaving the company abruptly, citing personal reasons.
“Daniel left Atlanta almost two years ago.””
Rachel nodded.
“Because he was threatened, too.””
Ethan looked at the flash drive.
“How much money?””
“Enough to make someone desperate.””
A sharp sound came from the entrance.
Marcus turned.
A man in a dark suit had appeared beyond the open doors. He wore a discreet earpiece and carried a folded umbrella despite the clear afternoon.
He wasn't dressed like a wedding guest.
His eyes moved across the chapel until they settled on Lily.
Marcus immediately stepped in front of her.
“Can I help you?”” he called.
The man didn't answer.
Instead, he lifted a phone to his ear.
Then Vanessa's phone vibrated in Marcus's hand.
Another message appeared.
*YOU HAVE ONE MINUTE.*
Rachel's breathing stopped.
The man at the doors smiled faintly.
Ethan moved toward Lily, but the stranger was already turning away.
“Hey!”” Marcus shouted.
The man disappeared outside.
Marcus ran to the doorway and looked both ways. The parking area beyond the chapel was crowded with vehicles, white ribbons, and guests hurrying toward their cars.
A dark blue sedan stood near the far exit.
Its left rear light was broken.
A white bird sticker covered part of the back window.
Marcus's face went pale.
“Ethan,” he called.
Ethan reached the doorway.
The sedan's engine started.
For one brief second, the driver turned his head.
Even at that distance, Ethan recognized him.
It was a man who had stood beside him at business dinners, shaken his hand at charity events, and promised to protect his interests when Rachel was first declared dead.
Graham Whitmore.
Ethan's chief financial officer.
The man who had helped manage the company's accounts after the accident.
The man who had signed off on the insurance settlement.
And the man who had told Ethan, two years earlier, that Rachel's death was an unavoidable tragedy.
The sedan pulled away.
Ethan stood motionless as it disappeared into the traffic.
Behind him, Vanessa whispered, “Oh, God.””
He turned slowly.
“You know him.””
She shook her head.
“Vanessa.””
“I've seen him before.””
“Where?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“At the hospital.””
Rachel's expression changed.
“What hospital?””
Vanessa pressed a hand over her mouth.
“The night of the accident.””
Ethan felt his entire body go cold.
“You told me you were at home that night.””
“I was trying to help you!””
“You said you didn't even know where Rachel was going!””
Vanessa backed away.
“I didn't know what Graham was planning.””
Rachel stared at her.
“You knew he was there?””
Vanessa began to cry.
“I saw him outside the hospital. He told me Rachel had survived, but that she couldn't be allowed to come back.””
The chapel seemed to shrink around Ethan.
He looked at the woman he had nearly married.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa covered her face.
May you like
And for the first time that afternoon, she didn't try to deny anything.
“I helped him hide her.””
