Chapter 8: The Last Page of the Agreement

The curtains moved only an inch.

But Ethan saw the shadow behind them.

A person stood outside the living room window, close enough to touch the glass.

“Get down!”” Marcus shouted.

He lunged across the room, knocking Ethan sideways as a sharp crack split the air.

The window shattered.

Lily screamed.

Rachel threw herself over her daughter, shielding her with her body as glass scattered across the carpet. Detective Morgan drew her weapon and shouted for everyone to stay down.

“Police! Show your hands!””

Marcus crawled toward the hallway, keeping low.

Ethan pulled Lily away from the broken window.

“Look at me, sweetheart. Look at me.””

She was crying too hard to answer.

Rachel's injured leg had twisted beneath her. She gritted her teeth, refusing to let go of Lily.

“Ethan, take her!””

He lifted Lily into his arms and moved behind the kitchen island.

Outside, footsteps pounded across the gravel.

Morgan reached the front door and shouted to the officers stationed outside.

“Suspect moving toward the rear! Secure the perimeter!””

A second later, a police siren sounded.

Then another.

The house filled with the smell of dust, broken glass, and the sharp metallic scent of fear.

Ethan pressed Lily against his chest.

“Are you hurt?””

She shook her head.

“Mommy?””

“She's here, sweetheart.””

“Is she hurt?””

Ethan looked toward the living room.

Rachel was sitting against the sofa, one arm wrapped around her leg. Marcus knelt beside her.

“Rachel?”” Ethan called.

She looked up.

“I'm okay.””

She wasn't. Her face was pale, and her breathing came in short bursts.

But she was conscious.

And Lily was safe.

For the moment.

Detective Morgan returned from the hallway.

“The suspect escaped through the rear fence. Officers are searching the surrounding streets.””

Ethan stared at her.

“You had officers outside.””

“Yes.””

“And someone still got close enough to shoot through the window?””

Morgan's expression tightened.

“The officers were positioned at the street and the front entrance. We didn't know someone would approach from the rear.””

Ethan wanted to scream.

Instead, he looked down at Lily.

She was trembling in his arms.

“Daddy, why do they keep trying to hurt us?””

He held her tighter.

“I don't know, sweetheart.””

“Is it because of the phone?””

“Maybe.””

“Then throw it away.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

He had no answer for that.

Rachel reached for them from the sofa.

“Bring her here.””

Ethan carried Lily to her mother.

Rachel kissed her forehead, then looked at Ethan.

“We can't stay here.””

Morgan shook her head.

“You won't be staying here. We'll relocate you to a protected facility.””

“Who controls the facility?”” Rachel asked.

The detective paused.

“Local law enforcement.””

“Which department?””

Morgan gave her the name.

Rachel's expression remained troubled.

“Graham has relationships throughout the city. If he has someone inside the department, how do we know the location won't leak?””

Morgan's jaw tightened.

“Mrs. Carter, I understand your concern, but we cannot operate on the assumption that everyone is compromised.””

“I'm not asking you to assume anything. I'm asking you to verify who has access to our location.””

The detective studied her.

Then she nodded.

“Fair point.””

She stepped into the hallway to make another call.

Marcus helped Rachel stand.

Ethan gathered Lily's small bag and the flash drive.

“We need to find Daniel,” he said.

Rachel looked at him.

“He said to call from a safe phone.””

“Do you know where he is?””

“Not exactly.””

Ethan glanced at her phone.

“Can we reply?””

“Not from that device.””

Marcus opened a kitchen drawer and removed an old prepaid phone still sealed in its packaging.

“I keep one for emergencies. No accounts, no personal contacts.””

Rachel looked at him.

“Why do you have that?””

Marcus shrugged.

“Because I've spent enough time around people who think a locked door solves every problem.””

He opened the package and inserted a prepaid SIM card.

“Let's see if your investigator answers.””

Rachel dialed the number from memory.

The phone rang four times.

Then a man's voice answered.

“Who is this?””

“Daniel, it's Rachel.””

Silence.

Then he exhaled sharply.

“Where are you?””

“Somewhere safe. For now.””

“Is Ethan with you?””

Ethan took the phone.

“This is Ethan Carter.””

Another silence followed.

“Mr. Carter,” Daniel said carefully.

“I wish we'd met under different circumstances.””

“Tell me what you found.””

“I can't explain everything over the phone.””

“You sent Rachel a message saying my father signed an agreement that changed everything.””

“Yes.””

“What did he sign?””

Daniel hesitated.

“The original agreement created a private financial arrangement between your father, Graham Whitmore, and Victor Hale. It was supposed to fund security operations for several high-value developments.””

Ethan frowned.

“Security operations?””

“That's what the documents said. But the money didn't go toward ordinary security. It was diverted through shell companies, then used to pay people who monitored employees, investigated competitors, and silenced anyone who threatened to expose the arrangement.””

Ethan felt sick.

“Silenced how?””

“I've seen payments that appear to be connected to intimidation and illegal surveillance. I haven't verified every recipient.””

“Was Rachel's accident part of it?””

“I found a payment made to a company associated with Victor Hale three days before the accident. I can't prove what it was for.””

Rachel closed her eyes.

Ethan continued.

“And my father?””

“He signed the original agreement. But the last page contains a handwritten amendment that was added later.””

“By whom?””

“I don't know. The signature isn't clear.””

“Then why did you say my father changed everything?””

“Because the amendment contains a clause that gives one person the authority to terminate the entire arrangement if certain conditions are met.””

Ethan looked at Rachel.

“What conditions?””

“Evidence of criminal conduct by a senior executive. Evidence that the agreement was used to threaten a family member. And a formal declaration by the company owner that the arrangement was entered into without full disclosure.””

Ethan stared at the phone.

“That's me.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't my father terminate it?””

Daniel's voice grew quieter.

“Because he died before he could.””

Rachel stepped closer.

“Daniel, what does the final page say?””

He hesitated.

“Rachel, I need to tell you something before you see it.””

“What?””

“The amendment names the person who can activate the clause.””

Ethan tightened his grip on the phone.

“Who?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Your mother.””

Ethan felt as if someone had struck him.

“My mother died twelve years ago.””

“No, Mr. Carter. Your father died twelve years ago. Your mother is still alive.””

Ethan stared at Rachel.

She looked just as stunned.

“What are you talking about?”” Ethan demanded.

Daniel continued.

“Your mother was listed as an independent trustee. She was given the authority to terminate the agreement if your father was unable to do so. Her signature appears on the amendment.””

Ethan shook his head.

“My mother has been living in Savannah for years. She has nothing to do with the company.””

“That's what I thought until I found the last page.””

“Why didn't you contact her?””

“Because she disappeared from the public records six months ago. Her house was sold, her phone number disconnected, and her attorney withdrew from the trust.””

Ethan's blood ran cold.

“Where is she now?””

“I don't know.””

Rachel looked at him.

“Ethan, we need to find her.””

Daniel spoke again.

“There is one more thing. The agreement includes a sealed statement from your father. It explains why he created the arrangement in the first place.””

“What does it say?””

“I haven't read the whole statement. The final page is damaged, and I need the original document to verify the text.””

“Then send me a copy.””

“I can send a partial scan, but it won't prove anything legally. The original is in a secure archive.””

“Where?””

“Your father's old law firm maintained the records. The archive was transferred after the firm dissolved.””

“To whom?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Graham Whitmore.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

Of course.

Graham had controlled the company's records for years. He had been the person Ethan trusted to manage the business while he mourned Rachel.

He had also been the person with access to every document that might expose the truth.

“Daniel, where can I meet you?””

“Not in Atlanta. I have a location outside the city. I'll send directions through the secure channel.””

“Send them now.””

“There's another problem.””

Ethan's patience snapped.

“What now?””

“I believe someone has already accessed the archive.””

“How do you know?””

“Because the last page was removed from the file yesterday.””

The room went silent.

Rachel whispered, “Graham.””

“Probably,” Daniel replied.

“But there's a second possibility.””

Ethan waited.

“The person who removed the page may have been trying to protect the person named in the amendment.””

Before Ethan could respond, a new voice came from behind him.

“That's enough, Daniel.””

Ethan turned.

Detective Morgan stood in the hallway, her phone pressed to her ear.

Her expression was unreadable.

“Who are you speaking to?”” Ethan demanded.

Morgan lowered the device.

“I was coordinating your relocation.””

“Then why did you say Daniel's name?””

For the first time since they had met, the detective looked uncomfortable.

“Because I've been investigating Victor Hale for eighteen months.””

Rachel tightened her grip on the crutch.

“And you didn't tell us?””

“I didn't know you were connected to him until today.””

“Did you know about Graham?””

“Yes.””

Ethan stared at her.

“How much do you know?””

Morgan glanced toward Lily.

“More than I can explain in front of her.””

“Then take us somewhere else and explain it.””

Morgan shook her head.

“There's something you need to understand first. The threat against your daughter isn't just about the flash drive. Graham has been searching for the final page of that agreement for weeks.””

Ethan frowned.

“Why?””

“Because whoever holds that page can expose the original arrangement and terminate it. If the agreement is still legally active, the people involved could lose access to millions of dollars.””

Rachel looked at the flash drive.

“And if the drive contains evidence that connects them to the accident, they could face criminal charges.””

Morgan nodded.

“Exactly.””

Ethan looked at Lily, who had fallen silent in Rachel's arms.

“Then why target her?””

Morgan's expression darkened.

“Because children are often the easiest way to force someone to surrender.””

Ethan's hands curled into fists.

He wanted to find Graham and make him answer for every threat, every lie, and every sleepless night Rachel had endured.

But he couldn't risk turning his anger into another mistake.

He took a breath.

“Where are you taking us?””

“To a secure location outside the city. Only two officers will know the address. We'll arrange transport separately.””

Rachel studied the detective.

“And if someone leaks it?””

“Then we move again.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That isn't a plan. That's running.””

Morgan looked at him.

“It's keeping a child alive while we build a case.””

Nobody argued after that.

An hour later, they were on the road again.

This time, they traveled in separate vehicles, with officers positioned ahead and behind them. The route changed twice before they reached a secluded property used for witness protection.

The house stood at the end of a long gravel drive, surrounded by tall trees and a high fence.

Inside, Lily was given a small bedroom with a soft blue blanket and a stuffed rabbit from a supply closet.

She looked at Rachel.

“Will you stay with me?””

Rachel sat beside her.

“All night.””

“Even if the police need you?””

“Even then.””

Lily reached for her hand.

“Mommy?””

“Yes, baby?””

“When I wake up tomorrow, will you still be here?””

Rachel's eyes filled.

“Yes.””

Lily seemed to consider the answer.

Then she nodded and lay down.

Ethan stood in the doorway, watching Rachel smooth the blanket over their daughter.

For the first time since the chapel, the house was quiet.

No shouting.

No threats.

No breaking glass.

Just Lily's slow breathing and the faint hum of the heating system.

Rachel joined Ethan in the hallway.

“She's exhausted.””

“So are you.””

Rachel gave a small, humorless smile.

“I've been exhausted for two years.””

He looked at her.

“I wish I'd known.””

“I wish I'd been able to tell you.””

They stood in silence.

Then Ethan asked, “Do you think my mother is involved?””

Rachel shook her head.

“I don't know. But if she signed that agreement, she may know why your father created it.””

“And if she disappeared six months ago…”

“Then someone may have found her.””

Ethan looked toward the closed bedroom door.

“I can't lose either of you again.””

Rachel's expression softened.

“You don't have to solve everything tonight.””

“I have to do something.””

“Then start by being here tomorrow morning when Lily wakes up.””

He looked at her.

For a moment, the years between them seemed to fall away. He wanted to reach for her, to ask whether there was still a chance for them.

But Rachel stepped back.

“Don't confuse surviving this together with everything being forgiven.””

Ethan nodded.

“I won't.””

She turned toward Lily's room.

Before entering, she glanced back.

“Ethan?””

“Yes?””

“If your mother is still alive, we need to hear her side before we decide what your father did.””

He nodded.

“I agree.””

Rachel disappeared into the room.

Ethan remained in the hallway, staring at the floor.

Then his phone vibrated.

Detective Morgan had sent him a message.

*We found the person who removed the last page from the archive.*

A second message appeared.

*It wasn't Graham.*

Ethan typed back.

*Who was it?*

The reply came almost immediately.

*Your mother.*

Beneath it was an address in Savannah.

May you like

And a final sentence.

*She has requested to speak with you alone.*
