Chapter 6: The Brother Who Took the Money

Marcus stared at Daniel.
The words seemed to hang in the air.
“That person was me.””
Daniel didn't move.
Renee looked at her brother with something close to terror.
Walter stood beside the sofa, clutching the brass key.
Maya had quietly moved beside her grandfather.
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
Then Marcus stepped toward Daniel.
“You took money to destroy my mother's records?””
Daniel nodded once.
“How much?””
“Marcus—”
“How much?””
Daniel looked at Renee.
“Twenty thousand.””
Walter's face twisted.
“Twenty thousand dollars?””
Daniel nodded.
Walter laughed once, but there was no humor in it.
“You sold your sister's secrets for twenty thousand dollars?””
“No,” Daniel replied.
“I sold the records because I thought I was protecting someone.””
“Who?””
Daniel looked directly at Marcus.
“You.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Don't pretend this was for me.””
“I didn't know what was inside those files.””
“You knew enough to take the money.””
Daniel lowered his eyes.
Renee stepped between them.
“Stop blaming him. I asked him to do it.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Why?””
Renee wiped her cheeks.
“Because I didn't want Benjamin coming into this family and tearing everything apart.””
Walter stared.
“He's my son.””
“He's a stranger!””
“He's my child!””
“And what about Marcus?”” Renee shouted.
“What about Maya? What happens when another son appears and suddenly everything belongs to him?””
Walter's face hardened.
“Nothing belongs to him except what is rightfully his.””
Renee shook her head.
“You don't understand what this family looks like from the outside.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Then explain it.””
She turned away.
For the first time, the explanation came without anger.
Just exhaustion.
“My parents adopted Benjamin when I was fourteen. They never told me the truth at first. I thought he was simply another child they had taken in.””
Daniel nodded.
“Our mother told us Evelyn had asked for help.””
Renee continued.
“When I was sixteen, I found the adoption papers. I confronted my mother. She told me the truth.””
Walter listened without blinking.
“She said Evelyn had been terrified. She said the baby had been sick, and she didn't want Walter to know. My parents agreed to raise him as their own.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why didn't they tell him when he grew up?””
“Because they were afraid of what would happen.””
Daniel added, “Benjamin was adopted legally. He had a good life. His adoptive parents loved him.””
Walter looked down.
“Then why did he start searching?””
Renee looked at the floor.
“Because his adoptive father died.””
Daniel continued.
“He found an old photograph among his father's belongings. It was the same photograph we saw today.””
Walter sat down slowly.
“He saw Evelyn.””
“Yes,” Daniel replied.
“He recognized her?””
“He knew she wasn't his biological mother. But he saw her name written on the back.””
Marcus leaned against the table.
“So Benjamin started looking for his birth parents.””
Renee nodded.
“And when he found me, he asked for help.””
“Why didn't you tell us?””
“Because I didn't know what he wanted.””
Walter looked at her.
“He wanted his father.””
Renee's voice broke.
“He also wanted money.””
Marcus turned.
“What?””
She looked up.
“He said his daughter needed treatment. He wanted help paying for it.””
Walter immediately stood.
“Then we help her.””
Renee shook her head.
“You don't even know him!””
“She's my granddaughter.””
The word seemed to surprise everyone.
Walter's eyes filled.
He looked at the photograph again.
“My granddaughter.””
Marcus felt something shift inside him.
The family had spent years arguing about a dog, a house, and money.
Meanwhile, an entire branch of their family had been living without them.
But he wasn't ready to forgive Renee.
Not yet.
“Why did you send Buddy to Daniel?”” he asked.
Renee looked at him.
“I already told you.””
“No. You gave me a convenient answer. I want the real one.””
She swallowed.
“Benjamin asked me to help him.””
Marcus frowned.
“With what?””
“He wanted something from Evelyn's storage unit.””
Walter looked up.
“What?””
“A document.””
Daniel nodded.
“The original trust agreement.””
Marcus looked at his father.
“Why would Benjamin want that?””
Walter's face tightened.
“Because the trust contains the beneficiary provisions.””
Daniel opened the cardboard box again.
He pulled out a folded sheet.
“There's more.””
Marcus stared.
“What now?””
Daniel placed the paper on the table.
It was a copy of the original trust agreement.
The document was dated twenty-six years earlier.
At the top were Evelyn's name and Walter's signature.
Below them were three beneficiary names.
Marcus Carter.
Benjamin Carter.
And Maya Carter.
Marcus read the list twice.
“Why are there three names?””
Walter looked confused.
“Your mother must have updated it.””
Daniel pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.
“The property was supposed to remain in the family. But the house couldn't be transferred until all three beneficiaries had been identified.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
“It means the house was never meant to belong to Maya alone.””
Walter shook his head.
“Evelyn told me Maya was protected.””
“She is,” Daniel replied.
“But so is Benjamin.””
Marcus studied the document.
There was a clause written in smaller print.
He read it aloud.
“If any beneficiary is discovered after the original filing date, the trustee must be notified within thirty days of verification.””
Walter looked at Daniel.
“Thirty days?””
Daniel nodded.
“Benjamin contacted Renee twenty-three days ago.””
Marcus turned toward his wife.
“So you knew the deadline was approaching.””
Renee said nothing.
“You knew Benjamin had a legal claim to the trust.””
“I knew he might.””
“And you tried to stop him.””
“I was trying to protect Maya!””
Walter's voice became sharp.
“By hiding her family?””
Renee looked at him.
“By protecting her future!””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Did you pay Daniel to destroy the original records because of this trust?””
Renee looked down.
“Yes.””
Walter closed his eyes.
Daniel continued.
“She offered me twenty thousand to get rid of the documents. I took the money. But I made copies first.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Why?””
Daniel gave a bitter smile.
“Because Evelyn had trusted me with something important. I couldn't bring myself to destroy everything she left behind.””
Renee stared at her brother.
“You told me you burned them.””
“I lied.””
“You said there was nothing left!””
“I said what you wanted to hear.””
Renee stepped toward him.
“You ruined everything.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No. I think I finally stopped ruining it.””
Marcus picked up the trust document.
“Where's the original?””
Daniel pointed to the brass key.
“Storage unit 214.””
Walter reached for his coat.
“Then we're going.””
Marcus looked at Maya.
“Baby, you stay here with Grandpa's neighbor until we come back.””
Maya shook her head.
“I want to come.””
Marcus crouched.
“We need to look at some grown-up paperwork.””
“But Buddy might come home.””
Marcus smiled sadly.
“I promise we'll find him.””
Maya looked at the empty leash.
“Can I bring this?””
“Of course.””
Renee suddenly spoke.
“I'm coming too.””
Marcus stood.
“No.””
“Marcus, I'm part of this.””
“You had your chance to tell the truth.””
“I know where the storage unit is.””
Daniel looked at her.
“No, you don't.””
Renee turned.
“I went there with Evelyn.””
Daniel frowned.
“When?””
“Before she died.””
Walter looked at her.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
Renee's voice dropped.
“Because she made me promise.””
Marcus stared.
“Promise what?””
Renee walked toward the window.
“She said that if Benjamin ever came looking for the family, I had to give him something.””
Walter stepped forward.
“What?””
Renee reached into her handbag.
She pulled out a small white envelope.
It had been folded several times, and the edges were yellow with age.
On the front was Evelyn's handwriting.
*For Benjamin.*
Walter took a step backward.
“Where did you get that?””
“Your wife gave it to me.””
“Why didn't you give it to him?””
Renee looked at the envelope.
“Because I read it.””
Marcus frowned.
“And?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because it explains why Evelyn gave him away.””
Walter reached for the envelope.
Renee pulled it back.
“There's something else you need to understand.””
Marcus stared at her.
“What?””
She opened the envelope carefully.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
At the top was a date.
Twenty-six years earlier.
Below it was a handwritten sentence.
*Walter, Benjamin is not the only child I had before I met you.*
Walter froze.
Marcus looked at his father.
“What does that mean?””
Renee unfolded the rest of the letter.
Her lips trembled as she read.
“Evelyn wrote that Benjamin had an older sister.””
Daniel's expression changed.
“An older sister?””
Renee nodded.
“She said the girl was adopted separately. She was never placed with the Mitchell family.””
Walter took the letter from her.
His eyes moved rapidly across the page.
Then he stopped.
There was a name written at the bottom.
A name that made him grip the paper so tightly it nearly tore.
*Renee Mitchell.*
Marcus looked at his wife.
Then at Daniel.
Then at his father.
The silence became unbearable.
Finally, Walter whispered:
“Renee... what is this?””
She began to cry.
“I didn't know until last month.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Know what?””
Renee looked at him.
Her voice was barely audible.
“I'm not just Benjamin's sister.””
She took a trembling breath.
“I'm Evelyn's daughter, too.””
Walter stared at her as though he no longer recognized the woman standing in his living room.
Daniel slowly stepped away.
Marcus felt his knees weaken.
And just as Walter opened his mouth to speak, Renee's phone rang again.
This time, the caller ID displayed a name nobody expected.
*BENJAMIN CARTER.*
Renee answered with shaking hands.
A man's voice came through.
“Renee, I'm outside.””
She looked toward the front window.
Then the voice continued.
“And I've brought Buddy home.””
A pause.
“But there's one thing you need to know before I come inside.””
Marcus moved closer to the phone.
“What?””
Benjamin's voice dropped.
“I found the original hospital record.””
Then came the sentence that made Walter grip the back of the sofa.
“Walter isn't the only person in that house who has a right to call Evelyn his mother.””
May you like
Outside, a car door slammed.
And a little golden dog began barking.
