Chapter 7: The Man Standing at the Door

Buddy barked again.

Maya dropped the yellow leash.

“BUDDY!””

She ran toward the front door, but Marcus caught her gently around the waist.

“Wait, sweetheart.””

“Daddy, that's Buddy! I know that's Buddy!””

Another bark came from outside.

Then three sharp knocks.

Walter stood beside the sofa, staring at Renee as if the last thirty seconds had completely rearranged his understanding of the world.

“Benjamin is outside?””

Renee nodded.

“With Buddy?””

“Yes.””

“And he says he has another hospital record?””

She nodded again.

Walter looked at Daniel.

“Did you know about this?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I knew Benjamin had been searching for the original records. I didn't know what he found.””

Marcus released Maya.

“I'm opening the door.””

Renee grabbed his arm.

“Marcus, please.””

He looked at her.

“You've had enough time to decide what I should and shouldn't know.””

He opened the door.

A tall Black man stood on the porch.

He wore a charcoal coat over a dark shirt. His beard was neatly trimmed, and his eyes were an unmistakable shade of brown.

Beside him sat Buddy.

The golden retriever immediately recognized Marcus.

His tail began moving so violently that his entire body shook.

“Buddy!””

Maya pushed past her father.

The dog jumped up, placing his front paws against her shoulders.

Maya wrapped both arms around his neck.

“YOU CAME BACK!””

Buddy licked her cheek.

She buried her face in his golden fur.

“I thought you were gone forever!””

Marcus crouched beside them.

He checked Buddy's collar, his ears, and his paws.

“Is he okay?””

Benjamin nodded.

“He's perfectly healthy. I took him to my veterinarian this morning. He had some anxiety, but nothing serious.””

Walter approached slowly.

“Thank you.””

Benjamin looked at him.

“You're Walter Carter?””

Walter nodded.

Benjamin studied his face.

For a moment, neither man spoke.

Then Benjamin said quietly:

“I've been looking for you for twenty-six years.””

Walter's eyes filled.

“I didn't know.””

“I know.””

“Your mother never told me.””

Benjamin looked down at Buddy.

“She didn't tell me either.””

Walter reached out a hand.

Benjamin hesitated.

Then he shook it.

It was a strange greeting between two people who should have known each other for decades.

Behind them, Daniel stepped onto the porch.

“Benjamin.””

Benjamin looked at him.

“Uncle Daniel.””

Daniel gave a small nod.

“You found the original records?””

Benjamin opened his coat and removed a thick manila envelope.

“Everything.””

Renee remained near the hallway.

She hadn't moved.

Marcus noticed her expression.

She looked terrified.

Benjamin followed his gaze.

“Renee.””

She swallowed.

“Benjamin.””

He glanced at Buddy.

“I brought him back because Maya deserves her dog. I also brought these because I'm tired of people deciding what I deserve.””

He held up the envelope.

Walter stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

Benjamin opened it.

The first document was a certified hospital birth record.

The second was an adoption placement agreement.

The third was a handwritten statement signed by Evelyn.

Benjamin placed them on the porch table.

Marcus picked up the first page.

His eyes moved across the lines.

Then he stopped.

“Wait.””

Walter looked at him.

“What?””

Marcus pointed to the birth record.

“Benjamin, this says you were born on August fourteenth.””

Benjamin nodded.

“That's right.””

Marcus checked the second document.

Then the third.

He looked up.

“Renee was born in December.””

Benjamin nodded again.

“So?””

Marcus looked at his wife.

“Renee, how old were you when Evelyn supposedly gave birth to Benjamin?””

“Fourteen.””

“But you were born twenty-six years ago.””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked back at the papers.

“Then how could you have witnessed Benjamin's discharge at fourteen if you were born the same year?””

Renee opened her mouth.

No answer came.

Daniel stepped closer.

“That's what I've been trying to tell her.””

Benjamin placed another sheet on the table.

“There's a reason.””

He tapped the hospital record.

“Evelyn gave birth to me. But the woman who signed the discharge paperwork wasn't Renee.””

Marcus frowned.

“Then who was it?””

Benjamin turned the paper around.

The signature was clearly visible.

*Rebecca Mitchell.*

Renee's mother.

Walter stared.

“Rebecca?””

Benjamin nodded.

“She was my adoptive mother.””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“I always thought she had signed the papers herself.””

“She did,” Benjamin replied.

“But the hospital records were later altered to make it look like Renee had been involved.””

Marcus looked at Renee.

“Why?””

She finally spoke.

“Because my mother wanted to protect me.””

“From what?””

Renee looked at Benjamin.

He answered.

“From the truth about who you really are.””

Walter shook his head.

“I don't understand.””

Benjamin opened the last document.

It was a letter written in Evelyn's handwriting.

“Your wife gave this to Rebecca before she died.””

Walter reached for it.

Benjamin didn't stop him.

Walter read the first few lines.

His expression changed.

Then he read the page again.

“What does this mean?””

Benjamin pointed to a paragraph.

“Evelyn wrote that Rebecca was pregnant at the same time she was. She had lost her baby during childbirth.””

Walter looked at Renee.

“Your mother lost a child?””

Renee nodded slowly.

“She never told me.””

Benjamin continued.

“Evelyn was afraid Rebecca would never recover. She arranged for Rebecca and her husband to adopt me.””

Walter's voice cracked.

“So you were adopted by the Mitchells because your mother wanted to help Rebecca?””

“Yes.””

“But why did she say Renee was her daughter?””

Benjamin looked toward the living room.

“Because she wasn't finished.””

He removed another page.

At the top was a second birth certificate.

The name of the mother was Evelyn Carter.

The child's name was Rebecca Mitchell.

Walter looked at the document.

Then he looked at Renee.

Renee began crying.

“No.””

Benjamin nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped backward.

Marcus stared at the paper.

“Wait. You're saying...””

Benjamin finished the sentence.

“Renee is Evelyn's biological daughter.””

Walter slowly sat down.

For a moment, he looked unable to breathe.

Then he looked at Renee.

“Your mother?””

Renee shook her head.

“My adoptive mother.””

Walter covered his face.

Evelyn had given birth to two children.

One was Benjamin.

The other was Renee.

Rebecca had adopted Benjamin.

And somehow, Renee had grown up believing Rebecca was her biological mother.

Marcus looked at his wife.

“Did you know?””

Renee nodded.

“When Benjamin contacted me, he told me about the adoption records. I thought he was mistaken. Then he sent me the hospital documents.””

“That's why you started searching for the trust.””

“I was trying to understand what Evelyn had left us.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You weren't trying to understand. You were trying to control it.””

Renee looked at him.

“I was scared.””

Walter slowly stood.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Renee's tears fell.

“Because I thought you would hate me.””

Walter looked at her for a long time.

Then he said something unexpected.

“I don't hate you.””

Renee stared.

“But I don't know who you are anymore.””

The words seemed to hurt more than shouting would have.

Maya approached Benjamin, holding Buddy's leash.

“Are you my uncle?””

Benjamin smiled sadly.

“I think I am.””

“And Buddy came with you?””

“Yes.””

“Did he miss me?””

Benjamin crouched.

“Every minute.””

Maya hugged him.

Benjamin closed his eyes.

For the first time that morning, he looked genuinely at peace.

But the moment didn't last.

Daniel picked up the hospital record.

“There's something else.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Of course there is.””

Daniel turned to the final page.

“Rebecca didn't just adopt Benjamin.””

Walter frowned.

“What else did she do?””

Daniel pointed to a handwritten amendment.

“She changed the original family records after Evelyn died.””

Benjamin nodded.

“She made it look as though I had no connection to the Carter family.””

Walter stared.

“Why?””

Benjamin looked at Renee.

“Because Rebecca believed Evelyn had left something valuable to her children.””

Marcus remembered the trust document.

“The house.””

Benjamin nodded.

“And the money.””

Renee looked away.

Benjamin continued.

“My adoptive mother spent years trying to make sure neither of us could claim anything from Evelyn.””

Walter shook his head.

“But Rebecca is dead.””

Benjamin's expression changed.

“Yes.””

He reached into his coat and pulled out a small photograph.

It showed an elderly woman standing outside a courthouse.

Beside her was a man in a suit.

Marcus recognized him from the old photograph.

Evelyn's former attorney.

Benjamin placed the photograph on the table.

“Rebecca didn't act alone.””

Walter stared at the man.

“That's Thomas Whitaker.””

Daniel nodded.

“The attorney who handled the original trust.””

Marcus looked at the photograph again.

“Then who changed the records?””

Benjamin answered:

“Thomas Whitaker.””

And before anyone could ask another question, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

May you like

Then his face changed.

“It's him.””
