Chapter 8: The Secret Andre Tried to Bury
I called Andre three times.
He didn't answer.
On the fourth attempt, his phone went straight to voicemail.
Renee watched me pace across her living room.
“What's going on?””
“The police found evidence that someone has been monitoring our movements. They say Andre visited my house last night.””
She stared at me.
“That doesn't make sense. Andre was at the party. He was trying to help you.””
“I know.””
“Then why would he be involved?””
“I don't know.””
I looked at Ethan, who was sitting on the sofa with his headphones around his neck.
“Buddy, stay with your aunt for a moment.””
He immediately stood.
“Are you going somewhere?””
“I need to make a call.””
“Can I come with you?””
I crouched beside him.
“You're staying here with Renee. Nobody is taking you anywhere without my permission.””
He searched my face.
“Promise?””
“I promise.””
He hugged me tightly before returning to the sofa.
I stepped onto the back porch and called Detective Harris.
“Have you confirmed Andre was involved in the surveillance?””
“Not yet. We've identified a vehicle registered to him near your residence, but we haven't established what he was doing there.””
“Could he have been helping us?””
“That's possible. We need to ask him directly.””
“Then why did you tell me he was involved?””
“I said the records show he visited your home. I haven't accused him of committing a crime.””
I exhaled.
“I'm sorry.””
“No need. You're dealing with a frightening situation. But I want you to understand that we are examining evidence, not assuming guilt.””
I leaned against the porch railing.
“Do you know where Andre is?””
“We're trying to locate him.””
“I'll keep looking.””
“Please don't approach him alone if you find him before we do.””
After we ended the call, I returned inside.
Renee was standing beside the kitchen counter, staring at her phone.
“Marcus,” she said quietly, “there's something I need to tell you.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“Last night, Andre called me.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did he say?””
“He asked whether Ethan had ever mentioned Daniel behaving strangely around him.””
I stared at her.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I didn't understand what he was getting at. I thought he was asking because of the argument at the party.””
“What else?””
Renee hesitated.
“He asked me to keep Ethan away from the house until he could speak to you privately.””
“Did he say why?””
“No. He just said he was afraid someone might try to use Ethan to get to you.””
The words chilled me.
“And you didn't think that was important?””
“I thought he was being dramatic. Then the party happened, and I got scared. I didn't know whether telling you would make things worse.””
I sat down heavily.
Everyone had been hiding something.
Vanessa had hidden her debt.
Daniel had hidden the financial transfers.
Andre had hidden his suspicions.
Even Renee had kept a conversation from me because she feared what it might mean.
I couldn't blame them all equally.
But I could no longer afford to assume that silence meant innocence.
My phone rang.
Andre.
I answered immediately.
“Where are you?””
“Marcus, listen to me. You need to stay away from the house.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel knows you found the financial records.””
“How do you know that?””
“Because he called me.””
“When?””
“About twenty minutes ago.””
I gripped the phone.
“What did he say?””
“He asked whether I'd told you about the hotel. Then he asked if I knew where Vanessa was staying.””
“Why would he ask you that?””
“Because he thinks I'm helping her.””
“Are you?””
There was a long pause.
Then Andre said, “Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
“Helping her do what?””
“Get the truth out.””
I stared at the porch door.
“Start talking.””
Andre exhaled.
“After Vanessa borrowed the money, she came to me because she was frightened. She told me Daniel had promised to help her repay the debt if she cooperated with him.””
“Cooperated how?””
“She wouldn't tell me at first. She kept saying it was about the company and that she was only helping him gather information.””
“What information?””
“Your travel schedule. Your insurance. Your estate documents. Anything that could tell him what would happen if you became unavailable.””
My stomach turned.
“And you helped her?””
“No. I told her to stop. But I didn't tell you because I thought she was being manipulated and I wanted to get her away from him first.””
“That's not an answer, Andre.””
“I know.””
His voice cracked.
“Marcus, I made a terrible mistake. I thought I could save my sister without getting you involved. I didn't realize how far she'd gone until she told me about the drink.””
I pressed my fingers against my forehead.
“What happened last night?””
“I went to your house because Vanessa called me. She said Daniel had told her the plan was moving forward and that she was afraid.””
“Did you see Daniel?””
“No. I arrived after he left.””
“Then why did the police find evidence of surveillance?””
“Because I was watching your house.””
I went still.
“You were watching me?””
“I wanted to make sure nobody approached you while I figured out what to do.””
I stared out at the garden.
“You should have told me.””
“I know.””
“You should have called the police.””
“I know.””
“You should have trusted me enough to let me protect my own family.””
Andre said nothing.
I could hear him breathing through the phone.
Finally, he whispered, “I'm sorry.””
I wanted to scream at him.
Instead, I asked, “Where is Vanessa?””
“She agreed to cooperate with the investigators. She's staying somewhere safe while they arrange her next interview.””
“Did she tell you who Daniel was working with?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
“Claire Bennett.””
I looked at the photograph on my phone.
“I know about Claire.””
“Then you know she's not just a consultant.””
“What is she?””
Andre hesitated.
“She worked in insurance investigations before moving into private financial consulting. Vanessa met her through Daniel.””
The connection to the medical clinic suddenly felt more significant.
“Why were Daniel and Claire at that clinic this morning?””
Andre went quiet.
“Marcus, I don't know.””
“Think.””
“I heard Vanessa mention a medical appointment once. She said Daniel wanted to make sure everything was arranged before the Eastbridge deal closed.””
“What appointment?””
“She didn't say.””
I ended the call after telling Andre that the police needed to hear everything he knew.
Then I contacted Detective Harris and passed along his statement.
By early evening, the investigators had located Andre and arranged to interview him.
Renee and I took Ethan to a nearby hotel under the guidance of the police. We were given a room on an upper floor, away from the main entrance, while officers checked the arrangements.
Ethan sat cross-legged on the bed, building a tower from the complimentary paper cups.
“Dad?””
I looked up from my phone.
“Yeah?””
“Do you think Vanessa really wanted to hurt you?””
I sat beside him.
“I think she made choices that put me in danger. I don't know everything she intended, and I won't pretend I do.””
“Do you still love her?””
The question caught me off guard.
I looked at the window.
Beyond the glass, the city lights were beginning to appear.
“Sometimes you can care about someone and still know they aren't safe to have in your life.””
Ethan considered that.
“Like when someone keeps breaking your trust?””
“Exactly.””
He looked down at the tower.
“I used to think she was going to be my mom.””
I felt my throat tighten.
“I know, buddy.””
“She helped me with my school projects. She came to my games. Sometimes she even waited up for me when I was sick.””
His voice trembled.
“Was all of that fake?””
I pulled him close.
“I don't think every good moment was fake. But good moments don't excuse bad choices.””
He rested his head against my shoulder.
“I don't want to hate her.””
“You don't have to decide how you feel about her tonight.””
He nodded.
For several minutes, we sat quietly.
Then Ethan lifted his head.
“Dad, can I show you something?””
He opened his phone and scrolled through his recordings.
“I was looking at the video from the kitchen again. I noticed something in the reflection.””
He handed me the phone.
The video showed Vanessa standing near the counter, speaking to the unidentified man. In the reflection of the dark kitchen window, a second figure briefly appeared in the hallway.
The figure wore a white shirt and a dark wristwatch.
I enlarged the image.
The watch was unmistakable.
Daniel wore the same model every day.
But it was the object in the figure's hand that made my heart race.
A small black folder.
I had seen it before.
Three months earlier, Daniel had brought that folder to my office and asked me to sign a set of insurance documents.
I'd refused because the paperwork hadn't been reviewed by our attorney.
He'd laughed and told me we'd discuss it later.
Now I wondered whether he'd been preparing for something far more serious than a routine business arrangement.
My phone rang.
Detective Harris.
“We've spoken with Andre,” she said.
“His account supports some of what Vanessa told us, but we still need independent evidence.””
“What about Daniel?””
“We've located Claire Bennett. She's agreed to speak with investigators, but her attorney has advised her not to answer certain questions until she's reviewed the evidence.””
“Did you find anything at the clinic?””
A pause.
“Yes. We confirmed that Daniel visited the facility this morning. However, we don't yet know why.””
I glanced at Ethan.
“What kind of clinic is it?””
“An outpatient medical facility. We're verifying whether his visit was connected to your case.””
My pulse quickened.
“Detective, I need to know if my son was part of the plan.””
“We're investigating every possibility. For now, keep him with you and follow the safety arrangements we've discussed.””
After the call, I opened the photograph again.
Daniel and Claire.
The medical clinic.
The forged authorization.
The secret transfers.
And now the black folder.
I searched the company's files for the insurance documents Daniel had brought me three months earlier.
I found a scanned copy.
The first page listed my name, my date of birth, and my personal information.
The second page described an insurance product I had never agreed to purchase.
The third page contained a signature.
Mine.
But I had never signed it.
At the bottom was a clause authorizing the insurer to request medical information if a claim was made.
I read it twice.
Then I noticed the beneficiary.
The document did not list Vanessa.
It did not list Ethan.
It listed a company called Meridian Holdings.
I searched the name.
The company had been registered in the same month as Meridian Advisory Group.
Both used the same mailing address.
Both were connected to Claire Bennett.
I sat motionless, staring at the screen.
The insurance paperwork wasn't a separate scheme.
It was part of the same financial structure.
My phone vibrated.
An email from Detective Harris.
*We have located the source of the anonymous messages. The sender has agreed to provide a statement.*
A second line appeared beneath it.
*The sender claims Daniel planned to use your death to trigger a multimillion-dollar insurance claim and seize control of Eastbridge.*
I looked toward Ethan.
He was finally smiling again, watching a cartoon with the sound turned low.
I couldn't let him see my fear.
I closed the laptop and sat beside him.
But as I reached for the remote, another message arrived from an unknown number.
*Vanessa wasn't supposed to be the only person at the party who knew what was in that pitcher. Ask Daniel what happened to the original insurance policy.*
I read the message twice.
Then I called Detective Harris.
She answered immediately.
“Mr. Hayes?””
“There's another message. It says the original insurance policy is missing.””
Her voice sharpened.
“Don't respond to the sender. Forward the message to me.””
I did.
Then I asked the question that had begun to haunt me.
“Detective, if Daniel had planned this for months, how do we know he hasn't already put something else in motion?””
She was silent for a moment.
“We don't know yet.””
I looked at my son.

And for the first time, I understood that surviving the birthday party hadn't ended the danger.
It had only given us a chance to discover how far the plan had already reached.
