Chapter 9: The Policy That Disappeared

At 6:32 the next morning, Detective Harris called with instructions to meet her at the precinct.

I left Ethan with Renee, checked that the hotel staff had the police contact information, and drove downtown.

The city was waking beneath a pale gray sky. Delivery trucks blocked the side streets, commuters hurried past coffee shops, and the radio played a cheerful advertisement for a local car dealership.

Ordinary life continued.

I envied it.

At the precinct, Detective Harris met me in a small conference room. A thick folder lay open on the table.

“Mr. Hayes, we've made progress.””

“Have you found the original policy?””

“Not yet. But we've identified the insurer and confirmed that a policy application was submitted using your personal information.””

“Was it approved?””

“The application was processed. However, we're still establishing the legal status of the coverage and whether any subsequent changes were made.””

I sat down.

“Who submitted it?””

“The records indicate that the application was handled through Meridian Holdings, using documents provided by Claire Bennett.””

I stared at the folder.

“Was Vanessa involved?””

“She appears to have provided some of the personal information. We haven't established exactly what she knew about the policy's purpose when she supplied it.””

I rubbed my hands together.

“What about Daniel?””

“We have records connecting him to the financial arrangements. But we need to establish his intentions and whether he knowingly participated in a plan to harm you.””

“Isn't the forged signature enough?””

“It's important evidence. It isn't, by itself, proof of every allegation.””

I nodded reluctantly.

She turned a page.

“We've also spoken to someone who worked with Claire at her previous firm. That person says Claire had access to insurance and medical administration systems through legitimate professional relationships.””

The clinic photograph came back to me.

“What was Daniel doing at the clinic?””

“We're still checking. The clinic has preserved its records, and our investigators are reviewing the relevant appointments.””

“Was there an appointment under my name?””

Detective Harris looked at me carefully.

“There was a preliminary inquiry involving your personal details. We don't yet know who initiated it or why.””

My stomach tightened.

“Someone used my name to arrange a medical appointment?””

“That's what we're investigating.””

I stared at the tabletop.

The scheme had reached beyond the office, beyond my marriage, and into records that should have been private.

“What happens now?””

“We continue gathering evidence. I also want you to understand that Vanessa has provided additional information about the night before your birthday.””

“What information?””

“She says Daniel told her the party was an opportunity to make your death appear unrelated to the company's financial problems.””

I felt cold all over.

“Did she admit to putting something in my drink?””

“She admitted to handling the glass and acknowledged that Daniel had instructed her to interfere with it. She has not yet provided a complete account of what she did.””

“Can you tell me whether the drink contained anything dangerous?””

“We're waiting for the laboratory findings. I don't want to give you an answer before we have one.””

I leaned back.

I wanted certainty.

I wanted someone to tell me exactly what had happened, who had planned it, and how close I had come to losing everything.

Instead, I was surrounded by unanswered questions.

Detective Harris closed the folder.

“There's one more thing. The person who sent you the anonymous messages wants to meet.””

“Who is it?””

“Claire Bennett.””

I stared at her.

“Why would she contact me?””

“She says she has information about the missing policy and wants to explain her role.””

“Do you believe her?””

“I believe we need to hear what she has to say. But you will not meet her alone.””

I agreed.

Two hours later, Claire arrived at the precinct accompanied by her attorney.

She looked different from the woman in the photographs. Her hair was tied back, her face pale, and the small scar above her eyebrow stood out beneath the harsh fluorescent lighting.

She sat opposite me and placed a manila envelope on the table.

“Mr. Hayes,” she said, “I know you have every reason to hate me.””

“I don't know you well enough to hate you.””

She looked down.

“That's fair.””

Detective Harris remained beside the door.

Claire's attorney spoke first.

“My client is willing to provide information relevant to the investigation. She is not admitting to any allegation merely by cooperating.””

Claire nodded.

Then she turned toward me.

“Daniel approached me last year. He said he needed help restructuring several business arrangements before a major acquisition.””

“Eastbridge.””

“Yes.””

“He told me he wanted to protect the company from financial exposure. He said you were considering stepping away from daily management.””

“I wasn't.””

“I know that now.””

She opened the envelope.

Inside were copies of emails, payment records, and a document bearing Daniel's signature.

“He asked me to establish two consulting companies. One was Meridian Advisory. The other was Meridian Holdings.””

“Why two?””

“The first was supposed to receive legitimate consulting payments. The second was intended to hold assets connected to a separate insurance arrangement.””

I stared at her.

“You knew the money was coming from my company?””

“I knew the payments came from Eastbridge. Daniel told me they were approved expenses.””

“Did you verify that?””

She looked ashamed.

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Because I wanted the contract. I told myself the paperwork was Daniel's responsibility.””

I let out a bitter laugh.

“So you accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars without confirming the work existed?””

“Yes.””

She didn't try to excuse herself.

That honesty made the situation feel even uglier.

“What about the insurance policy?””

Claire folded her hands.

“Daniel told me he wanted to create financial protection for the company in case something happened to you. He said the policy would be used to secure a loan tied to Eastbridge.””

“Did you believe him?””

“At first.””

“And later?””

She looked toward Detective Harris.

“Later, I saw an email in which Daniel discussed changing the beneficiary structure and transferring control of the policy to Meridian Holdings. I realized the arrangement wasn't what he'd told me.””

“When?””

“And you did nothing?””

“I confronted him.””

“What did he say?””

Claire swallowed.

“He told me I was already involved. He said if I walked away, he'd make sure I took the blame for the missing money.””

I leaned forward.

“Then why contact me now?””

“Because I found out about the birthday party.””

She looked directly into my eyes.

“I knew Daniel had been pressuring Vanessa. I knew he wanted you to sign certain documents. But I didn't know he'd move from financial fraud to something that could put your life in danger.””

“You knew he was planning something.””

“Yes.””

“And you stayed quiet.””

Her eyes filled.

“Yes.””

The room was silent.

I thought of Ethan standing in front of me, pleading for me not to drink.

A twelve-year-old had done what three adults had failed to do.

He had chosen the truth even when he was terrified.

Claire reached into the envelope and removed another sheet of paper.

“This is a copy of the original insurance policy schedule. Daniel asked me to keep it in a separate file in case the electronic record was changed.””

I took the paper.

The document listed the policy number, the proposed beneficiary, and the date of the last amendment.

I scanned the details.

Then I stopped at a handwritten note near the bottom.

*Effective upon confirmed death or permanent incapacity.*

Below it was a reference to an emergency authorization.

The same authorization that bore my forged signature.

I looked up.

“Who changed the beneficiary?””

Claire hesitated.

“Daniel requested the change.””

“Who approved it?””

“The records say it was approved by the policyholder.””

“Which was me.””

“Yes.””

“But I never signed it.””

“I know.””

She removed a final document from the envelope.

“This is the email he sent me after the amendment was processed.””

I read it.

Daniel's message was brief.

Keep the original off the shared drive. If Marcus asks questions, tell him the policy was never finalized.

I felt my pulse hammering in my ears.

The policy had been finalized.

The records had been altered.

And Daniel had instructed Claire to conceal the original.

Detective Harris took the document.

“This is important evidence. We'll verify its authenticity and preserve the original records.””

I looked at Claire.

“Did you know what Daniel intended to do at my birthday party?””

She shook her head.

“Not at first. He told me Vanessa would make sure you were unavailable for a few days. He said there would be an incident, but he didn't explain what kind.””

“An incident?””

“Yes.””

“Did he mention Ethan?””

Her expression crumpled.

“He said the boy might interfere.””

My hands clenched.

“And you still did nothing?””

“I was afraid.””

“So was my son.””

She looked down.

“I know.””

I stood, unable to remain seated.

“Fear doesn't make the consequences disappear.””

“No,” she whispered.

“It doesn't.””

Detective Harris asked Claire several more questions before ending the meeting. Her attorney requested a break, and the investigators arranged to preserve the documents for forensic review.

I left the conference room with my head spinning.

Outside, my phone was vibrating.

Renee.

I answered immediately.

“What's wrong?””

“Ethan's okay,” she said quickly.

“But someone called the hotel asking for him.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

“They said they were from your office. They claimed you had authorized them to collect him because you were delayed.””

“Did they give a name?””

“Daniel.””

I gripped the phone so tightly my fingers hurt.

“Where is Ethan now?””

“In the room with me. The hotel manager refused to release him because the authorization wasn't on file.””

“Stay there. Don't open the door for anyone until I call you again.””

“Marcus, what's happening?””

“Daniel tried to collect him.””

Renee went silent.

Then she whispered, “Oh, my God.””

I called Detective Harris immediately.

She answered before the first ring had finished.

“Mr. Hayes?””

“Daniel just tried to collect my son from the hotel by pretending I had authorized it.””

Her voice changed instantly.

“Are you with your son?””

“No. Renee is with him.””

“Stay on the line. I'm sending officers to the hotel. Do not go looking for Mr. Brooks.””

“I need to get to Ethan.””

“You can meet the officers there. Let them handle the situation.””

I ran to the parking garage.

As I drove, every red light felt like an insult.

My son had spent the last two days trying to understand why the adults he trusted had betrayed him. Now one of those adults had apparently attempted to reach him again.

I reached the hotel in less than twenty minutes.

Two police vehicles were already parked outside.

Renee stood near the reception desk, holding Ethan's hand.

The moment he saw me, he ran forward.

“Dad!””

I caught him in my arms.

“I'm here.””

He buried his face against my chest.

“Someone called and said you wanted me to go with them.””

“I know.””

“He said you were waiting outside.””

“I know, buddy.””

Ethan began to cry.

“I didn't believe him.””

I closed my eyes and held him tighter.

“You did exactly the right thing.””

Detective Harris approached.

“We're checking the call records and reviewing the hotel's security footage. The person who called used information that suggests he knew your family arrangements.””

“Was it Daniel?””

“We're working to establish that.””

I looked at the officers.

“Can you protect my son?””

“We'll make arrangements to keep him safe while the investigation continues.””

I nodded, but my anger remained.

Someone had used my forged signature to access company funds.

Someone had created an insurance arrangement without my consent.

Someone had attempted to interfere with my son's school records.

And now someone had tried to take him from a hotel by pretending to speak for me.

I looked at Ethan.

He was wiping his face with his sleeve, trying to regain his composure.

I had nearly lost my life at my own birthday party.

But whatever Daniel had planned, I would not allow him to use my son to finish it.

My phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

*The original policy isn't the only document Daniel has hidden. Check the safe in your office.*

I stared at the screen.

Then I looked at Detective Harris.

“There's something else in my office we need to examine.””

She nodded.

“Then we'll go together.””

As we left the hotel, I glanced back at the reception desk.

A printed sheet lay beside the manager's computer.

It was the visitor authorization submitted that morning.

The signature at the bottom was supposed to be mine.

But underneath it, in tiny gray text, was the name of the device used to submit the request.

*DBROOKS-MOBILE.*

For the first time, we had something that directly connected Daniel to the attempt to reach Ethan.

And I knew exactly where we needed to look next.

The safe in my office.

Because if Daniel had hidden another document there, it might finally reveal what he intended to do after my birthday.

And whether the danger had truly ended—or whether the most important part of his plan was still waiting to unfold.
