Chapter 2: The Man Who Owned the Building

Derek Collins had worked at the resort for six years.

He had survived three ownership changes, two general managers, and countless demanding guests.

He believed he understood how the hotel worked.

He knew which guests deserved special attention.

He knew which complaints could be ignored.

And he knew that Vanessa Whitmore was someone he couldn't afford to upset.

Her husband, Richard Whitmore, had recently helped secure a major investment partnership for the resort.

Vanessa reminded everyone of that fact whenever she wanted something.

A complimentary suite.

A private dining room.

A late checkout.

A bottle of champagne delivered at midnight.

Derek usually said yes.

It had helped his career.

It had also made him arrogant.

As he approached the entrance, he saw three black SUVs pulling into the circular driveway.

Their engines were quiet.

Their windows were tinted.

The first vehicle stopped directly in front of the glass doors.

A uniformed security officer stepped out.

Then another.

The rear passenger door opened.

A tall Black man in his early sixties emerged.

He wore a charcoal suit, a white shirt, and a simple gold watch.

His hair was closely cropped, with silver at the temples.

He carried no designer luggage.

He didn't need to.

His name was Malcolm Brooks.

And he was Nia's father.

Malcolm looked toward the entrance.

“Is my daughter inside?””

Derek stepped forward with his professional smile.

“Good afternoon, sir. Welcome to the resort. How may I assist you?””

Malcolm didn't return the smile.

“I'm looking for Nia Brooks.””

Derek glanced at the security officer.

“Of course. We have a situation involving a guest, but I'm sure we can resolve it.””

Malcolm's eyes narrowed.

“What situation?””

Derek hesitated.

“Your daughter has been asked to leave the property following an incident.””

Malcolm remained perfectly still.

“An incident?””

“Yes, sir.””

“Is she hurt?””

Derek cleared his throat.

“There's been some disagreement.””

Malcolm took one step closer.

“That's not what I asked.””

Derek looked uncomfortable.

“She's physically fine, as far as I know.””

“Then why is she being removed?””

“Sir, I don't want to discuss private guest matters in the entrance.””

Malcolm looked through the glass.

He saw his daughter.

She was standing near a sandstone pillar, holding her newborn.

Her cheek was red.

Her eyes were swollen.

The diaper bag rested against her leg.

Malcolm's jaw tightened.

He walked past Derek.

“Move.””

Derek stepped aside.

Inside the lobby, Vanessa was checking her reflection in her phone.

She looked up when the doors opened.

“Finally,” she said.

“Someone has arrived to collect her.””

Then she noticed the security personnel entering behind Malcolm.

Her smile weakened.

Nia saw her father.

“Dad.””

Malcolm crossed the lobby in seconds.

He didn't look at the manager.

He didn't look at Vanessa.

He went straight to his daughter.

“Baby.””

Nia's face crumpled.

Malcolm wrapped one arm around her carefully, avoiding the newborn between them.

“What happened?””

Nia shook her head.

“I didn't want to make a big deal out of it.””

Malcolm looked at her cheek.

The red mark was unmistakable.

“Who did this?””

Nia glanced toward Vanessa.

“That woman.””

Malcolm turned.

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“Excuse me?””

Malcolm stared at her.

“Did you strike my daughter?””

Vanessa scoffed.

“She walked into me.””

“Did you strike her?””

“I corrected her behavior.””

Malcolm's expression hardened.

“By hitting her while she was holding a newborn?””

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“Please. The baby wasn't hurt.””

Malcolm looked down at the infant.

The little boy was still crying softly.

He adjusted the white blanket around the baby's shoulder.

Then he turned back toward Vanessa.

“You should be ashamed of yourself.””

Vanessa laughed.

“And who exactly are you?””

Malcolm didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at Derek.

“Are you the manager?””

“Yes, sir. Derek Collins.””

“Did you witness what happened?””

Derek shifted his weight.

“I witnessed a disagreement between two guests.””

Malcolm's eyes stayed on him.

“Did you witness her slap my daughter?””

“I wasn't present at the exact moment.””

Nia looked up.

“Dad, he saw her after. I told him what happened.””

Malcolm nodded.

“Did you ask anyone to review the security footage?””

Derek looked irritated.

“Sir, I don't think that's necessary.””

“Why not?””

“Because this matter is already being handled.””

Malcolm glanced at his daughter's cheek.

“Handled?””

Derek straightened his tie.

“Your daughter has been asked to leave. Mrs. Whitmore is an important guest, and we have an obligation to maintain a peaceful environment.””

Malcolm slowly looked around the lobby.

At the guests.

At the reception desk.

At the fountain.

Then back at Derek.

“So the woman who was assaulted is the disturbance?””

Derek didn't answer.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Listen, I don't know who you are, but my husband has a very important relationship with this property.””

Malcolm finally looked at her.

“Your husband?””

“Yes. Richard Whitmore. You might have heard of him.””

Malcolm gave a brief nod.

“I know who he is.””

Vanessa smiled triumphantly.

“Then you understand why I shouldn't have to deal with this nonsense.””

Malcolm's expression didn't change.

“I understand that you believe your husband's business relationship gives you permission to hurt people.””

Vanessa's smile vanished.

“How dare you?””

Derek stepped between them.

“Sir, I need everyone to calm down.””

Malcolm looked at him.

“I'm calm.””

His voice was quiet.

That somehow made the words more intimidating.

“Now, I want the hotel's general manager here.””

Derek shook his head.

“I'm the senior manager on duty.””

“Then call the general manager.””

“Sir, there's no reason to escalate this.””

Malcolm pulled a slim black phone from his pocket.

“I'll make the call myself.””

He tapped one contact.

The call connected almost immediately.

“Malcolm,” a man's voice answered.

“James, I'm in your lobby.””

A pause.

“Mr. Brooks? I wasn't expecting you until tomorrow.””

“I know. I need you to come downstairs.””

“Is everything all right?””

“No.””

Malcolm looked at Nia.

“My daughter was assaulted by another guest. Your manager is trying to remove her instead of addressing the assault.””

The voice on the other end changed.

“Which manager?””

“Derek Collins.””

Another pause.

“I'll be there in two minutes.””

Malcolm ended the call.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“That's very dramatic.””

Nia looked at her father.

“Dad, I just want to go to the room. The baby needs to eat.””

Malcolm's face softened.

“I know, sweetheart. We'll get you settled.””

He turned toward Emily.

“Excuse me. Could you please arrange a quiet room for my daughter and her baby?””

Emily nodded quickly.

“Of course, sir.””

Derek immediately interrupted.

“Emily, don't authorize anything.””

Emily froze.

Malcolm looked at Derek.

“Why?””

“Because she has been instructed to leave.””

Malcolm slowly reached into his jacket.

He removed a small leather cardholder.

From it, he took a black-and-gold membership card.

He placed it on the reception counter.

Derek glanced down.

Then he looked again.

The card carried the name:

MALCOLM E. BROOKS.

Below it was the emblem of Brooks Hospitality Group.

Derek's expression changed.

He knew that company.

Everyone in the hospitality industry knew it.

Brooks Hospitality Group owned luxury hotels, resorts, commercial properties, and several international hospitality brands.

But Derek still didn't understand.

He looked at the card.

Then at Malcolm.

“Mr. Brooks?””

Malcolm nodded.

“That's correct.””

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“What's that supposed to mean?””

Emily's fingers hovered over her keyboard.

She had already recognized the name.

Brooks Hospitality Group had acquired the controlling interest in the resort six months earlier.

The transition had been announced internally.

But the new owner's daughter had never been introduced to the staff.

And Malcolm had deliberately avoided public appearances during the restructuring.

Derek's voice became noticeably quieter.

“Sir, are you affiliated with the ownership company?””

Malcolm looked directly at him.

“I'm the chairman.””

Vanessa stopped smiling.

The fountain continued trickling.

A suitcase rolled across the lobby somewhere behind them.

But nobody in their immediate circle moved.

Malcolm placed his card back into his pocket.

“Now, Mr. Collins, I'd like you to explain why my daughter was slapped in your lobby and why you decided she was the person who needed to leave.””

Derek swallowed.

“Sir, I wasn't aware—”

Malcolm interrupted.

“That's precisely the problem.””

A side elevator opened.

A man in his late forties hurried into the lobby, carrying a tablet.

He was James Bennett, the resort's general manager.

“Mr. Brooks!””

He approached quickly.

“I'm terribly sorry. I was informed there was an issue.””

Malcolm nodded toward Nia.

“Look at her cheek.””

James did.

His expression fell.

“Miss Brooks, are you all right?””

Nia nodded weakly.

“My baby is okay.””

James glanced at the newborn.

Then at Vanessa.

“Mrs. Whitmore?””

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“I expect an apology for being dragged into this.””

James looked confused.

“What?””

Vanessa pointed at Nia.

“This woman walked into me, started arguing, and now her father is making threats.””

Malcolm spoke quietly.

“James, I want the footage preserved. Every camera covering this lobby. Immediately.””

James nodded.

“Absolutely.””

“And I want the incident report.””

“Of course.””

“And nobody deletes, edits, or removes anything.””

James looked toward Derek.

“Derek, did you file a report?””

Derek hesitated.

“I was about to.””

Emily finally spoke.

“No, he didn't.””

Everyone turned.

Derek's eyes widened.

“Emily.””

She stood behind the reception desk, pale but determined.

“I offered to help the mother, and he told me to return to my station.””

James looked at her.

“Did you see what happened?””

“I saw the woman strike her. I also heard Miss Brooks tell Mr. Collins that she wanted to report the assault.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“That's ridiculous.””

Emily continued.

“Mr. Collins told security to remove her.””

Derek's face reddened.

“That's enough.””

But James raised one hand.

“No. Let her finish.””

Emily swallowed.

Then she said something that made Malcolm turn toward her.

“There's something else, Mr. Brooks.””

“What is it?””

Emily looked at Vanessa.

Then at Derek.

“I heard Mrs. Whitmore tell Mr. Collins that she didn't want people like Miss Brooks staying here.””

Vanessa's mouth opened.

“That is not what I said!””

Emily looked directly at her.

“I heard you.””

James took a slow breath.

“Derek, my office. Now.””

But Malcolm wasn't finished.

He looked at his phone.

A message had just arrived from the company's legal department.

It contained a preliminary review of the resort's ownership structure.

Malcolm read the first paragraph.

Then his eyes stopped on a familiar name.

Richard Whitmore.

He looked up.

“James, before anyone leaves, I need to know something.””

“Yes, sir?””

“Why is Richard Whitmore listed as an authorized representative on this property's investment account?””

James frowned.

“Because of the partnership agreement.””

Malcolm slowly lowered the phone.

“What partnership agreement?””

James looked confused.

Then he said:

“The one that was supposed to be finalized tomorrow morning.””

May you like

Malcolm stared at him.

“James, that agreement was canceled three weeks ago.””
