Chapter 7: The Letter Evelyn Left Behind

“Someone has been hiding the transfer ever since.””

The attorney's words echoed through Malcolm's mind.

He stood motionless in the private conference room, his phone pressed against his ear.

Across from him, Nia held her newborn against her chest.

“Dad?”” she asked again.

“What does he mean?””

Malcolm raised one finger, asking her to wait.

“Robert, I need you to explain exactly what happened.””

Robert Hayes had been the family's estate attorney for nearly twenty years. He had handled Evelyn Brooks's will, the family trust, and several business transactions.

His voice sounded unusually strained.

“Malcolm, I found the original amendment in a sealed archive. It was never included in the electronic records.””

“Why?””

“Because someone requested that the file be restricted eleven years ago.””

“Who?””

Robert hesitated.

“Richard Whitmore.””

Malcolm closed his eyes.

“Continue.””

“Evelyn's trust contained a protective clause. If anyone attempted to transfer, borrow against, or redirect the assets without Nia's consent, ownership would immediately pass into an irrevocable trust controlled exclusively for her benefit.””

Malcolm looked toward his daughter.

“How much money are we talking about?””

“The original principal was approximately $1.8 million. With accumulated investments, the current estimated value is considerably higher.””

Nia's eyes widened.

“Dad, what money?””

Malcolm covered the phone.

“Your mother left you something.””

“I thought everything was handled when she died.””

“It was supposed to be.””

He returned to the call.

“Robert, why was Richard involved?””

“Evelyn originally considered him a potential business partner. He had access to certain investment proposals through his family company. But shortly before she died, she became concerned about irregularities.””

Malcolm gripped the edge of the table.

“What irregularities?””

“Payments moving through shell companies. Altered beneficiary documents. Unauthorized requests for account information.””

“Did she confront him?””

“I believe she did.””

Malcolm's face tightened.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because the documents I received at the time didn't contain the amendment. I thought the estate had been properly settled.””

Nia stepped closer.

“Dad, let me talk to him.””

Malcolm handed her the phone.

“Robert?””

“Yes, Nia.””

“Did my mother leave me a letter?””

There was a pause.

“Yes.””

“Can I read it?””

“Of course. I'll bring the original to you.””

Nia swallowed.

“Thank you.””

She handed the phone back.

Malcolm ended the call.

For a moment, father and daughter simply stared at each other.

Then Nia asked the question he had been avoiding.

“Did you know Mom was afraid of someone?””

Malcolm sat down.

“Your mother was intelligent. She noticed things other people missed.””

“That doesn't answer my question.””

He looked at her.

“She told me she didn't trust Richard.””

Nia blinked.

“Then why did you let him near the family?””

“I didn't know he was involved in anything illegal. At the time, he was presenting himself as a respectable businessman.””

“Did you believe him?””

“I believed the documents I was shown.””

Nia looked down at her baby.

Her mother had been gone for eleven years.

Yet suddenly, it felt as though Evelyn had been standing just outside the room, trying to tell them something.

Malcolm reached for his daughter's hand.

“I should have investigated sooner.””

Nia shook her head.

“You couldn't have known everything.””

“I should have protected what she left you.””

“You protected me.””

He looked at her.

Nia's eyes filled.

“You raised me. You took care of me. You made sure I had everything I needed.””

Malcolm squeezed her hand.

“I promised your mother I'd never let anyone hurt you.””

“And you haven't broken that promise.””

He looked away.

Then Nia added quietly:

“Even today, when I called you, you came.””

Malcolm pulled her into a careful embrace.

For the first time since the lobby incident, he allowed himself to cry.

Two hours later, Robert Hayes arrived at the resort.

He carried a dark leather briefcase and an old cream-colored envelope.

Nia was sitting near the window with her baby.

Malcolm stood beside her.

Robert placed the envelope on the table.

“Your mother asked me to keep this separate from the main estate documents.””

Nia stared at the handwriting.

It was unmistakably Evelyn's.

Her mother had written her name in the same elegant script she used on birthday cards.

Nia touched the envelope.

“She wrote this?””

Robert nodded.

“She did.””

“Why didn't I receive it when I turned eighteen?””

“Because the letter contained instructions connected to the trust's protective clause. I wasn't aware the amendment had been excluded from the original estate file.””

Malcolm looked at him.

“Someone deliberately hid it.””

Robert nodded.

“That is what the evidence suggests.””

Nia carefully opened the envelope.

Inside was a folded letter and a small photograph.

The photograph showed Evelyn sitting on a garden bench, holding a baby Nia.

Nia smiled through her tears.

Then she unfolded the letter.

My beautiful Nia,

If you're reading this, you're old enough to understand that the world isn't always kind to people who trust too easily.

I want you to know something first.

You were never an accident, a burden, or a mistake.

You were the greatest gift of my life.

Nia pressed the letter against her chest.

Malcolm looked toward the window.

He remembered Evelyn writing at the kitchen table, stopping every few minutes to kiss their daughter's forehead.

Nia continued reading.

I have created something for you. Not because I believe money can make you happy, but because I want you to have choices.

If anyone tries to take it, remember that they are not simply taking money.

They are taking your future.

There is one person I do not trust.

Richard Whitmore.

Nia stopped.

She looked at her father.

Malcolm nodded slowly.

If he ever claims to be acting in your family's best interests, ask him about the original investment agreement.

Ask him why he needed my signature.

And if he tells you I approved the transfer, do not believe him.

I never signed away your inheritance.

I love you beyond every word I could write.

Mom.

Nia began crying.

Malcolm took the letter from her trembling hands and read the final paragraph.

There was something written beneath Evelyn's signature.

A short handwritten instruction.

The original agreement is kept in the blue safe deposit box. The key is with Robert.

Robert looked uncomfortable.

Malcolm turned toward him.

“You have the key?””

Robert nodded.

“I found it in the same archive.””

“Why didn't you mention it?””

“Because I wanted to verify the contents before discussing it.””

He opened his briefcase and removed a small blue key.

Nia looked at it.

“What's inside?””

Robert answered carefully.

“Possibly the original investment agreement. And perhaps something more.””

The following morning, Malcolm, Nia, Angela, and Robert met at a private banking office.

The blue safe deposit box had remained untouched for eleven years.

A bank representative led them into a secure room.

Robert presented the required documents.

Then he inserted the key.

The box opened with a soft metallic click.

Inside were several sealed envelopes, a flash drive, and a thick blue folder.

Malcolm removed the folder.

The first document was an investment agreement dated three months before Evelyn's death.

Richard Whitmore's signature appeared on the final page.

But the signature beside Evelyn's name was missing.

Instead, there was a handwritten note.

Authorization withheld pending independent audit.

Malcolm frowned.

“That means she refused.””

Robert nodded.

“Exactly.””

Angela examined the document.

“This contradicts the agreement Richard submitted to the hotel.””

“Can you prove this is the original?””

Robert pointed to the bank's archival seal.

“Yes. The document was deposited eleven years ago.””

Malcolm turned another page.

There was a list of companies and payments.

Several names were unfamiliar.

But one appeared repeatedly.

Desert Crown Consulting.

Nia stared.

“That's Derek's company.””

Angela nodded.

“It appears the same company was being used long before Derek registered his version of it.””

Robert frowned.

“That's interesting.””

Malcolm looked at him.

“What?””

“Desert Crown Consulting was originally incorporated under a different name.””

“Whose name?””

Robert examined the document.

Then his face changed.

“Richard Whitmore's father.””

Nia leaned closer.

“His father?””

Robert nodded.

“He established the company shortly before your mother died.””

Malcolm slowly closed the folder.

“This wasn't something Derek invented.””

“No,” Angela replied.

“He may have inherited the operation.””

Nia looked at the flash drive.

“What about that?””

Robert carefully removed it.

“Your mother labeled it.””

He turned it over.

There were three words written in Evelyn's handwriting.

*IF THEY DENY EVERYTHING.*

Back at the resort, Richard was receiving a phone call.

He stood in the presidential suite's sitting room, speaking through clenched teeth.

“Are you certain?””

The person on the other end answered.

Richard turned toward the window.

“Who opened it?””

He listened.

Then he swore under his breath.

“Get me a copy of whatever they found.””

He ended the call.

Vanessa entered carrying a cup of coffee.

“Who was that?””

Richard didn't answer.

“Richard?””

“The safe deposit box.””

Vanessa stopped.

“What about it?””

“They opened it.””

Her coffee cup rattled against its saucer.

“That's impossible.””

“Apparently not.””

Vanessa sat down.

“Does it contain the agreement?””

“Yes.””

“And the recording?””

Richard turned.

“What recording?””

Vanessa stared at him.

Then she realized what she had said.

Richard walked toward her.

“What recording, Vanessa?””

She looked away.

“Nothing.””

He grabbed the back of the chair.

“Don't lie to me.””

Vanessa's voice became defensive.

“Evelyn recorded one of her conversations. I thought it had been destroyed.””

Richard's face went pale.

“Who has it?””

“I don't know.””

He stared at her.

Then he whispered:

“If Malcolm hears that recording, we're finished.””

Inside the banking office, Angela connected the flash drive to an isolated computer.

Several files appeared.

One was an audio recording.

Another was a scanned document.

The third was a video file dated eleven years earlier.

Malcolm stared at the screen.

“Play it.””

Angela clicked the recording.

At first, there was only static.

Then a familiar female voice filled the room.

Evelyn.

“Richard, I have the documents.””

A man's voice answered.

“Then you know what you're supposed to do.””

“I know what you're asking me to do.””

“You're making this unnecessarily difficult.””

“I will not sign away my daughter's future.””

A pause.

Then Richard's voice became colder.

“Think carefully, Evelyn. Your husband has built an entire company around people like me.””

“My husband built his company without stealing from children.””

“Watch your accusations.””

“Watch your actions.””

The recording ended with the sound of a chair moving.

Then Evelyn spoke one final sentence.

“If anything happens to me, Malcolm will know exactly who tried to take our daughter's inheritance.””

The audio stopped.

Nobody moved.

Malcolm closed his eyes.

He had heard his wife's voice.

After eleven years.

Nia covered her mouth.

“Mom knew.””

Malcolm nodded.

“Yes.””

Angela looked at the remaining files.

“There's another document.””

She opened it.

It was a list of transactions, dates, and names.

At the bottom was a final entry.

*AUTHORIZED BENEFICIARY: NIA BROOKS.*

*TRANSFER CONDITION: AUTOMATIC UPON EVIDENCE OF UNAUTHORIZED ASSET DIVERSION.*

Angela looked up.

“Mr. Brooks, the condition was triggered eleven years ago.””

Robert nodded.

“That means the trust legally belongs to Nia.””

Malcolm looked at his daughter.

“It's yours.””

Nia stared at the screen.

She had entered the room believing someone had stolen money in her name.

Now she was learning that her mother had left her an entire financial future.

But Angela wasn't finished.

She opened the last file.

It contained a scanned photograph.

A young Richard Whitmore stood beside a hospital bed.

Next to him was Derek Collins.

Both men were smiling.

The date was eleven years earlier.

Nia leaned closer.

“Why were they together?””

Robert examined the photograph.

Then he noticed something in the background.

A hospital identification bracelet.

He enlarged the image.

His face changed.

“Malcolm.””

“What?””

Robert pointed toward the bracelet.

“Look at the name.””

Malcolm stared.

The bracelet belonged to Evelyn Brooks.

But the photograph had been taken after the date of her death.

And written on the back was a message in Evelyn's handwriting:

*THEY KNOW SHE ISN'T THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN EXPOSE THEM.*

Malcolm looked at Robert.

“Who is she talking about?””

Robert slowly turned the photograph over again.

Beneath the message was another name.

May you like

A name nobody in the room expected.

*JASMINE REED.*
