Chapter 8: The Recording Margaret Left Behind

Alexander didn't immediately respond.
He simply stared at Richard.
"Daniel?""
Richard nodded.
"Daniel arranged the maintenance appointment.""
Alexander's face tightened.
"Why?""
"I don't know.""
"Don't tell me you don't know.""
Richard stood and began pacing.
"Daniel called me three weeks before the accident. He said your vehicle needed a routine inspection. He told me the company had concerns about its maintenance history.""
"And you believed him?""
"Yes.""
"You handed him the keys?""
"I gave them to Victor Hale, the mechanic he recommended.""
Alexander pressed his palms against the wheelchair armrests.
"Did you ever see the car after the inspection?""
Richard nodded.
"I drove it once.""
"How did it feel?""
"Normal.""
"Then what happened?""
Richard looked down.
"I returned the spare key to Daniel.""
Alexander closed his eyes.
The pieces were beginning to form a picture.
But the picture was incomplete.
"Why didn't you tell the police?""
Richard's voice broke.
"Because Daniel told me not to.""
Alexander looked up sharply.
"What?""
"He said the investigation could expose the company's financial problems. He told me that if the accident was connected to the vehicle maintenance, the company could face enormous liability.""
Richard wiped his forehead.
"He said we needed to protect the family.""
Alexander gave a bitter smile.
"There's that word again.""
Richard sat down.
"I know how it sounds.""
"It sounds like you were more concerned about money than Margaret's death.""
Richard flinched.
"That's not fair.""
"Then tell me what is fair.""
Richard lowered his head.
"I was scared, Alex. I was scared of losing the company, losing the house, losing everything. I had made decisions I couldn't explain, and Daniel convinced me that keeping quiet was the only way to stop things from getting worse.""
Alexander stared at him.
"Did you ever consider that Margaret deserved justice?""
Richard began crying.
"Every day.""
Alexander looked away.
He didn't know whether he believed him.
Then Richard stood abruptly.
"There's something else.""
Alexander turned.
Richard walked toward a locked cabinet behind his desk.
He entered a code and removed a small wooden box.
"I kept this because I didn't know what else to do with it.""
He placed the box on the table.
Alexander looked at it.
"What is it?""
"Something Margaret left with me.""
Richard opened the lid.
Inside was a small silver USB drive and a folded note.
Alexander's breathing stopped.
He recognized the handwriting.
"Where did you get this?""
"Margaret gave it to me two days before the accident.""
"What is it?""
"She said it contained information about Daniel.""
Alexander reached for the drive.
"Have you watched it?""
Richard shook his head.
"No.""
"Why?""
"Because she told me not to open it unless something happened to her.""
Alexander stared.
"Something happened to her.""
Richard lowered his eyes.
"I know.""
"Then why did you wait six years?""
Richard's voice broke.
"Because I was a coward.""
Alexander looked at the drive.
He felt an unfamiliar anger rising in his chest.
Not the explosive anger of a man who wanted revenge.
Something quieter.
Something deeper.
The realization that the people he had trusted most had been standing around a truth while he lived inside a lie.
"Call my driver," Alexander said.
Richard frowned.
"Where are you going?""
"Back to St. Mary's.""
"I'll come with you.""
"No.""
"Alex—"
"You've done enough.""
Richard stepped back.
Alexander placed the USB drive in his pocket.
Then he turned toward the door.
Before leaving, he stopped.
"Richard?""
His brother looked up.
"Yes?""
"Did Margaret know she was in danger?""
Richard began crying again.
"I think she suspected.""
Alexander swallowed.
"Then why didn't she tell me?""
Richard's answer was barely audible.
"Because she thought you were the one they were trying to hurt.""
Alexander left without another word.
At St. Mary's, Thomas was waiting in his office.
When Alexander showed him the drive, the doctor's expression became serious.
"Where did you get this?""
"From my brother.""
Thomas closed the office door.
"Do you know what's on it?""
"No.""
Thomas connected the drive to a secure computer.
A single video file appeared.
The date was six years old.
Alexander stared at the screen.
"Play it.""
The image flickered.
Then Margaret appeared.
She was sitting in the same hospital room where Alexander had been treated after the accident.
She wore a cream-colored blouse and had her hair tied back.
She looked tired.
But she was smiling.
"Richard, if you're watching this, something has happened that I hoped would never happen.""
Alexander's throat tightened.
Margaret looked directly into the camera.
"I need you to listen carefully.""
She took a breath.
"I've been looking into some irregularities involving Daniel Brooks. At first, I thought it was ordinary administrative confusion. But I've discovered that several important documents have been altered.""
Alexander leaned closer.
Thomas stood silently behind him.
Margaret continued.
"Daniel has been moving money between company accounts without proper authorization. He's also been requesting information about Alexander's travel arrangements and vehicle maintenance.""
Alexander's eyes narrowed.
Margaret glanced toward the door.
Then she continued.
"I confronted him yesterday. He told me I was misunderstanding the situation. But he became very angry when I mentioned that I intended to speak to the board.""
She paused.
"Richard, I know you're involved in some of these decisions. I don't believe you understand everything that's happening. Please be careful.""
Alexander's hands trembled.
Margaret leaned toward the camera.
"Alex doesn't know any of this. I haven't told him because I don't want him carrying another burden while he's already dealing with so much.""
She looked down.
Then she looked up again.
"There's something else.""
Her voice became quieter.
"Daniel asked me whether I knew where the spare key to your car was.""
Alexander felt his chest tighten.
"He said there was a maintenance issue that needed to be checked. I told him I didn't know. But I saw him speaking with Victor Hale afterward.""
Margaret paused.
"If anything happens to me, please make sure Alexander receives this recording.""
Her eyes filled.
"Alex, if you're watching this, I need you to know that none of this is your fault.""
Alexander covered his mouth.
Margaret continued.
"I love you. I always will.""
She smiled faintly.
"And please don't stop living because something terrible happened to us.""
The video ended.
Alexander sat motionless.
For a long time, he couldn't speak.
Thomas quietly handed him a tissue.
Alexander shook his head.
Then he looked at the blank screen.
"She knew.""
Thomas nodded.
"She was worried.""
Alexander's voice trembled.
"She knew somebody was watching her.""
Thomas didn't answer.
The office door opened.
A woman in her late fifties entered.
She wore a dark green suit and carried a thick folder.
"Dr. Reed?""
Thomas stood.
"Detective Morgan.""
The woman introduced herself to Alexander.
"I'm Detective Laura Morgan. I was part of the original investigation into your accident.""
Alexander looked at her.
"Why are you here?""
Thomas answered.
"I contacted the authorities this morning after you told me about the messages and the documents.""
Detective Morgan nodded.
"We've reopened several aspects of the case based on information that wasn't available during the original investigation.""
Alexander looked at the USB drive.
"Have you seen this?""
She nodded.
"We've just reviewed it.""
"Can you arrest Daniel?""
"Not on the basis of a video alone. We need to verify the financial records, maintenance logs, and any physical evidence that remains available.""
Alexander looked frustrated.
"How long will that take?""
"I can't promise a timeline.""
She placed a photograph on the desk.
It showed a man standing beside a black sedan.
Alexander recognized the car immediately.
"Victor Hale?""
"Yes.""
Detective Morgan pointed toward the background.
"This photograph was taken at a private garage three days before the accident.""
Alexander studied it.
"Who's the other man?""
Detective Morgan hesitated.
Then she turned the photograph toward him.
Standing beside Victor was Daniel Brooks.
Alexander felt his heart pound.
"That's him.""
The detective nodded.
"We've also located a payment record from one of your company's subsidiaries.""
"What kind of payment?""
"A transfer made to Victor Hale two days before the accident.""
Alexander looked at the amount.
One hundred and eighty thousand dollars.
His face went pale.
"Why would a mechanic receive that much money?""
Detective Morgan folded her hands.
"That's what we're trying to establish.""
Alexander looked at Thomas.
Then at the photograph.
His entire life seemed to be turning upside down.
But before he could ask another question, Detective Morgan's phone rang.
She answered.
"Detective Morgan.""
A few seconds passed.
Her expression changed.
"What do you mean he's missing?""
Alexander looked up.
The detective listened again.
Then she slowly lowered the phone.
"Mr. Whitmore, Daniel Brooks has disappeared.""
Alexander's stomach tightened.
"Disappeared?""
"He left his residence early this morning. His car was found abandoned near a private airport.""
Thomas stepped forward.
"Was anyone with him?""
Detective Morgan looked at Alexander.
"We don't know.""
Then she delivered the words that made the room go cold.
"However, we found something else in his house.""
"What?""
"A photograph of your late wife.""
Alexander swallowed.
"What about it?""
Detective Morgan opened the folder.
On the back of the photograph was a handwritten message.
*SHE SHOULD HAVE KEPT QUIET.*
Alexander stared at it.
And suddenly, the threatening message on his phone made sense.
Someone knew he was investigating.
May you like
Someone knew about Margaret's recording.
And that person was desperate to keep the past buried.
