Chapter 9: The Truth Behind the Accident

By noon, Alexander's name was circulating through every major news network.

A billionaire businessman.

A mysterious hospital recording.

A former assistant who had disappeared.

And a six-year-old accident that might not have been an accident at all.

The headlines were relentless.

*WHITMORE FOUNDATION UNDER INVESTIGATION.*

*MILLIONAIRE'S FORMER ASSISTANT LINKED TO MYSTERIOUS VEHICLE PAYMENT.*

*QUESTIONS RAISED ABOUT FATAL CRASH THAT KILLED WHITMORE'S WIFE.*

Alexander watched the coverage from his private office.

He hated every second of it.

But he hated the silence of the past six years more.

Detective Morgan had asked him not to speak publicly until the investigation had progressed.

He agreed.

There were still too many unanswered questions.

At 2:30 p.m., his lawyer arrived.

Her name was Catherine Ellis.

She was a sharp, experienced attorney who had represented the Whitmore family for nearly twenty years.

She placed a folder on his desk.

"Alexander, we need to discuss your company's exposure.""

He looked up.

"Not now.""

"With respect, this is important.""

"So is finding the man who may have tampered with my car.""

Catherine removed her glasses.

"I understand. But the investigation may reveal financial misconduct, unauthorized payments, and possible corporate negligence.""

Alexander looked at her.

"Then let it.""

"That could cost the company millions.""

He gave a tired smile.

"Apparently, money is the only thing everybody has been protecting.""

Catherine paused.

Then she opened the folder.

"There is something you should know. Richard has contacted my office.""

Alexander's expression hardened.

"What does he want?""

"He wants to cooperate with the investigation.""

"Good.""

"He also claims he has additional documents.""

"What documents?""

Catherine hesitated.

"Records concerning a meeting between Daniel Brooks and Victor Hale.""

Alexander leaned forward.

"When?""

"Three days before the accident.""

His jaw tightened.

"Where?""

"A private garage in New Jersey.""

Alexander looked at the photograph Detective Morgan had shown him.

"Can we get a copy?""

"Detective Morgan has already requested the original.""

Catherine closed the folder.

"Alexander, there's another issue.""

"What?""

"Your brother believes Daniel may have acted with someone else's help.""

Alexander stared.

"Who?""

Catherine lowered her voice.

"He mentioned a former executive at Whitmore Development.""

Alexander's mind raced.

"Name?""

"Martin Cole.""

Alexander sat back.

Martin had been the company's chief financial officer.

He had resigned two years after the accident.

Alexander remembered receiving a letter announcing his departure, but he hadn't questioned it.

He had been too busy attending medical appointments and trying to adjust to life without Margaret.

"Where is Martin now?""

"His current address is in New Jersey. The authorities are attempting to contact him.""

Alexander looked out the window.

"Find him.""

Catherine nodded.

"I'll coordinate with Detective Morgan.""

After she left, Alexander received a call from Evelyn.

"Mr. Whitmore?""

"Mrs. Carter. Is everything all right?""

"Yes, sir. Grace wanted to know how you're doing.""

Alexander smiled faintly.

"Tell her I'm doing better.""

"She'll be happy to hear that.""

There was a pause.

Then Evelyn asked:

"Have you found out what happened to Margaret?""

"Not everything.""

"I'm sorry.""

Alexander looked at the photograph of his wife.

"Mrs. Carter, can I ask you something?""

"Of course.""

"Did Margaret ever talk to Angela about being afraid?""

Evelyn became quiet.

"Yes.""

"What did she say?""

"Angela told me Margaret had visited her several times. She was worried about something involving your company.""

Alexander closed his eyes.

"Did she mention Daniel?""

"Not by name.""

"Did she mention a man named Martin Cole?""

Evelyn paused.

"Yes.""

Alexander sat forward.

"What did she say?""

"She told Angela that someone at your company was moving money without your knowledge.""

Alexander felt his stomach tighten.

"Why didn't anybody tell me?""

Evelyn's voice became emotional.

"Because Angela was afraid too. She told my daughter that Margaret had asked her to wait until she could speak to you personally.""

Alexander looked down.

"She never got the chance.""

"No, sir.""

He swallowed.

"Thank you for telling me.""

After ending the call, he sat alone for several minutes.

Then his phone rang again.

This time, it was Richard.

Alexander answered.

"Yes?""

"Alex, I need to see you.""

"Why?""

"Because I found something.""

"What?""

"Something Daniel sent me the day before the accident.""

Alexander sat upright.

"Where are you?""

"At my house.""

"Don't go anywhere. I'm sending someone to pick you up.""

Richard lowered his voice.

"There's another thing.""

"What?""

"I think Daniel was planning to leave the country.""

Alexander's face hardened.

"Why?""

"Because he contacted me last night.""

Alexander froze.

"Last night?""

"Yes.""

"What did he say?""

Richard took a breath.

"He told me that if I wanted to protect myself, I should stop talking to you.""

Alexander stared at the phone.

"Did he threaten you?""

"He said he had enough information to destroy both of us.""

Alexander's voice became cold.

"Let him try.""

Richard hesitated.

"Alex, I don't think you understand how dangerous this could become.""

Alexander looked at Margaret's photograph.

"Richard, I have spent six years living in fear of things that may never happen. I'm finished.""

He ended the call.

Within an hour, Richard arrived at Alexander's house.

He carried a small leather briefcase.

His face looked exhausted.

"I brought everything," he said.

Alexander motioned toward the study.

"Show me.""

Richard opened the briefcase.

Inside were bank statements, emails, maintenance records, and several handwritten notes.

Alexander began examining them.

The first documents showed payments from a company account to a consulting firm.

The second showed transfers to Victor Hale.

The third contained email correspondence between Daniel and Martin Cole.

Alexander read the messages carefully.

One sentence stood out.

Once the vehicle issue is handled, the ownership transition should proceed without interference.

Alexander looked up.

"What does this mean?""

Richard shook his head.

"I don't know.""

Alexander read the message again.

"Ownership transition?""

Richard sat down.

"Daniel and Martin had been discussing restructuring the company. They wanted to move several major assets into a new holding company.""

"Without my approval?""

"Yes.""

Alexander's expression darkened.

"Why?""

Richard looked at him.

"Because they believed you wouldn't recover enough to return to active leadership.""

Alexander stared.

The words felt like a physical blow.

"They were planning to take my company?""

Richard nodded.

"Possibly.""

Alexander looked down at the documents.

"And the accident?""

Richard swallowed.

"I don't know whether Daniel intended to hurt you. But the timing was suspicious.""

Alexander pushed the papers away.

"Suspicious?""

His voice rose.

"My wife died. I lost the use of my legs. I disappeared from the company. And these men were discussing transferring my assets while I was still in the hospital.""

Richard looked down.

"I know.""

Alexander's hands trembled.

"How could you let this happen?""

Richard began crying.

"I didn't understand everything at the time.""

"You understood enough.""

Richard didn't respond.

A knock sounded at the study door.

His driver entered.

"Mr. Whitmore, Detective Morgan is here.""

Alexander nodded.

"Send her in.""

The detective entered with another officer.

She carried a sealed evidence bag.

"Mr. Whitmore, we've located Martin Cole.""

Alexander leaned forward.

"Where?""

"At a property he owns outside Trenton.""

"Have you spoken to him?""

"We have.""

"And?""

Detective Morgan looked at Richard.

"He has agreed to provide a statement.""

Richard lowered his head.

The detective placed a printed document on the desk.

"Mr. Cole claims the vehicle payment was authorized by Daniel Brooks. He also says he was instructed to create a paper trail suggesting the work was routine.""

Alexander stared.

"Did he say who ordered the actual work?""

Detective Morgan nodded.

"He claims Daniel was the person who arranged it.""

Alexander felt his chest tighten.

"Did he admit that the car was deliberately damaged?""

The detective hesitated.

"He says Victor Hale told him that the steering system had been altered. However, we haven't independently verified every part of his account.""

Alexander looked toward the window.

The truth was getting closer.

But it still wasn't complete.

"Where is Victor Hale?""

Detective Morgan's expression changed.

"We found him.""

Alexander turned.

"Where?""

"He was living under a different name in Pennsylvania.""

"Have you arrested him?""

"Yes.""

Richard covered his mouth.

Detective Morgan continued.

"He initially denied knowing Daniel Brooks. But when confronted with the payment records, he requested legal counsel.""

Alexander looked at the detective.

"Can I speak to him?""

"Not yet.""

"Why?""

"Because we need to establish what actually happened before the accident.""

Alexander nodded reluctantly.

Then the detective removed one final document from her folder.

"This is a statement from a former hospital employee.""

Alexander looked at it.

"Who?""

"A nurse who worked the night Margaret died.""

His heart began pounding.

"Why is she coming forward now?""

"She says Margaret told her something shortly before her death.""

Alexander stared.

"What?""

The detective placed the statement in front of him.

The nurse's words were typed across the page.

Margaret Whitmore told me that she believed someone had been following her. She said she had evidence concerning a financial scheme inside her husband's company.

Alexander felt his throat tighten.

The statement continued.

She asked me to make sure her husband knew that she had not been driving the vehicle at the time the maintenance work was arranged.

Alexander looked up.

"She wasn't driving?""

The detective shook her head.

"According to the nurse, Margaret said the car had been moved without her permission.""

Alexander stared at the paper.

"Then why was she driving it?""

The detective looked at him.

"That's the question we're trying to answer.""

Richard suddenly stood.

"Wait.""

Everyone turned toward him.

Richard's face had gone white.

"I remember something.""

Alexander looked at his brother.

"What?""

Richard's hands trembled.

"The night before the accident, Margaret called me.""

Alexander leaned forward.

"What did she say?""

Richard swallowed.

"She said she had found out Daniel had taken your car without permission.""

Alexander felt his stomach drop.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Richard looked at the floor.

"Because I thought she was exaggerating. She told me she was going to meet Daniel and confront him.""

Alexander stared.

"Where?""

Richard closed his eyes.

"At the garage.""

The detective immediately stepped forward.

"Which garage?""

Richard gave her the address.

Then he looked at Alexander.

"Alex, there's something else.""

Alexander's voice became quiet.

"What?""

Richard began to cry.

"Margaret wasn't supposed to be driving your car that night.""

Alexander felt the world tilt.

"Then whose car was she supposed to be driving?""

Richard looked directly into his brother's eyes.

"Mine.""

Silence.

Richard continued.

"She took my car because she was afraid Daniel had done something to yours. She was going to meet you at the hospital afterward.""

Alexander's eyes filled.

"Why didn't she tell me?""

Richard lowered his head.

"Because she wanted to surprise you.""

He reached into his briefcase and removed a final photograph.

It showed Margaret standing beside Richard's car.

On the back was a handwritten note.

Taking Richard's car tonight. Don't tell Alex. I want to surprise him with the good news about his treatment.

Alexander pressed the photograph against his chest.

She had been planning to surprise him.

She had been looking for hope.

She had been trying to give him a future.

And instead, she had never made it home.

The detective's phone rang.

She listened for several seconds.

Then her expression changed.

"Understood.""

She ended the call and looked at Alexander.

"We've received new information from Victor Hale.""

Alexander wiped his eyes.

"What?""

The detective hesitated.

"He's claiming Daniel Brooks wasn't the person who ordered the vehicle alteration.""

Alexander stared.

"Who was?""

Detective Morgan slowly looked toward Richard.

"Victor says the original instruction came from someone inside your family.""

Richard staggered backward.

Alexander turned toward his brother.

"Richard?""

His brother shook his head violently.

"No.""

Detective Morgan continued.

"Victor has identified the person who arranged the first payment.""

She placed a photograph on the desk.

Alexander looked down.

It showed a man standing beside Victor in the garage.

A man Alexander recognized immediately.

Not Daniel.

Not Martin.

His own younger brother.

Richard Whitmore.

Alexander slowly raised his eyes.

Richard's face crumpled.

"Alex, please. You have to let me explain.""

May you like

And for the first time since the investigation began, Alexander wondered whether the truth was going to destroy more than his memories.

It might destroy the last family he had left.
