Chapter 2: The Little Girl With the Rabbit
The courtroom doors remained closed for three seconds.
Three seconds was all it took for Daniel to lose the color in his face.
Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.
“Daniel,” she whispered, “what is she talking about?””
He didn't answer.
“Daniel!””
“Be quiet.””
The words came out so sharply that Vanessa recoiled.
Camilla watched them, her hand instinctively moving over her belly.
She knew that expression on Daniel's face.
She had seen it when a business deal collapsed, when an investor discovered a mistake in his accounts, and when he came home one night to find police officers waiting outside their house after one of his partners accused him of fraud.
It was the expression of a man who had discovered that the situation was no longer under his control.
But a little girl?
Camilla's heart began to pound.
The double doors opened.
A uniformed bailiff stepped inside, followed by a small child wearing a yellow coat.
Lily.
Her six-year-old daughter had two neat braids, white socks folded over her sneakers, and a worn plush rabbit tucked tightly beneath her chin.
Camilla forgot to breathe.
“Lily?””
Her daughter looked up.
The rabbit's long ears were twisted around Lily's fingers. Her eyes were red, as though she had been crying before entering the courtroom.
“Mommy?””
Camilla pushed back her chair so quickly that it scraped across the floor.
“Oh, sweetheart.””
She started toward her daughter, but the bailiff gently raised a hand.
“Please remain seated for a moment, ma'am. The judge will explain.””
Camilla stopped.
Every instinct told her to run to Lily, scoop her up, and carry her out of the room.
But Lily wasn't looking at her anymore.
She was staring at Daniel.
Her father stood beside Vanessa, his mouth slightly open.
“Lily,” he said, forcing a smile, “what are you doing here?””
The little girl clutched her rabbit tighter.
The smile disappeared from her face.
Vanessa rose so abruptly that her chair rolled backward.
“No,” she said.
Everyone turned toward her.
She swallowed and tried again.
“No. She shouldn't be here.””
Judge Carter lifted her chin.
“Ms. Reed, sit down.””
“But, Your Honor—”
“Now.””
Vanessa lowered herself into her chair, her fingers digging into the leather armrests.
Daniel took one step toward Lily.
“Sweetheart, come here. Daddy will explain everything.””
The bailiff moved into his path.
“Sir, please remain at counsel table.””
Daniel stared at the uniformed officer.
“I'm her father.””
“And this is a courtroom,” Judge Carter replied.
“You will follow its rules.””
Lily flinched at Daniel's raised voice.
Camilla saw it.
That tiny movement hurt more than anything Daniel had said during the divorce proceedings.
Her daughter had never been afraid of her father.
Not when he carried her on his shoulders through the park. Not when he tucked her into bed. Not when he taught her to ride a bicycle and ran behind her, laughing, until she could balance on her own.
What had happened to make Lily recoil from him now?
Judge Carter leaned forward.
“Lily, my name is Judge Carter. You are not in trouble. Do you understand?””
Lily nodded faintly.
“Can you tell me your full name?””
“Lily Caldwell.””
“And how old are you?””
“Six.””
“Thank you, Lily. I understand that you asked to speak with me today.””
Lily looked at Camilla.
Her lower lip trembled.
“Mommy said I should tell the truth.””
Camilla's throat tightened.
“I did, baby,” she whispered.
“Always tell the truth.””
Daniel suddenly found his voice.
“Your Honor, I object. This is completely inappropriate. She's a child. She doesn't understand what's happening.””
Judge Carter's eyes narrowed.
“Mr. Caldwell, your daughter has not yet said anything about the matter before this court. I suggest you stop trying to tell us what she understands.””
A few people in the gallery shifted in their seats.
Daniel glanced toward his attorney, who had been quietly examining a document. The attorney leaned close and murmured something, but Daniel shook his head impatiently.
Vanessa, meanwhile, was staring at Lily's rabbit.
It was a faded gray toy with one button eye and a small patch of blue thread sewn across its stomach. Camilla had bought it for Lily when she was three, after the little girl refused to sleep without something soft in her arms.
Lily took it everywhere.
To preschool.
To the grocery store.
To the hospital when Camilla had suffered a frightening pregnancy scare two months earlier.
And, apparently, to whatever had happened before this hearing.
Judge Carter gestured toward a small chair positioned near the front of the courtroom.
“Lily, would you feel more comfortable sitting down?””
Lily shook her head.
“I want Mommy.””
Camilla's eyes filled with tears.
The judge considered her for a moment, then nodded toward the bailiff.
“Bring the chair beside Mrs. Caldwell's table.””
The bailiff moved it carefully.
Lily walked toward her mother, her sneakers making soft squeaks against the polished floor.
Camilla reached out but waited until Lily was close enough to choose for herself.
Her daughter climbed onto the chair and immediately pressed her shoulder against Camilla's arm.
Camilla wrapped one arm around her.
“I'm here,” she whispered.
“You're safe.””
Lily nodded, but her gaze remained fixed on the table where Daniel and Vanessa sat.
Judge Carter opened the separate file again.
“Lily, someone told me that you have something important you want the court to know about your father and Ms. Reed.””
Lily's fingers tightened around the rabbit.
“About Daddy and the mean lady,” she said.
Vanessa's face turned scarlet.
“Excuse me?””
Judge Carter didn't look at her.
“Lily, take your time.””
The little girl swallowed.
“I wasn't supposed to see them.””
Daniel pushed away from the table.
“Your Honor, this has gone far enough.””
The bailiff stepped directly in front of him.
“Sir, sit down.””
“That's my daughter!””
“And you will not approach her without permission.””
Daniel's hands curled into fists.
For a moment, Camilla thought he might try to force his way past the officer.
Then he looked toward Lily.
“Sweetheart, listen to me. Whatever you think you saw, there's an explanation.””
Lily's face crumpled.
“You said I was dreaming.””
Daniel stopped.
Camilla turned toward him.
“What?””
Lily looked down at her rabbit.
“When I told you, Daddy said I was dreaming. He said I shouldn't tell Mommy because it would make her sick.””
Camilla felt the room tilt around her.
Daniel's expression hardened.
“That's not what happened.””
Lily shook her head.
“You said it twice.””
Vanessa leaned forward, her platinum hair falling across one shoulder.
“Judge, children make up stories. Especially when they've been coached.””
Camilla slowly turned toward her.
“Don't you dare.””
Vanessa pointed at Lily.
“Look at her. She's repeating whatever her mother told her to say. This is manipulation.””
Camilla stood so abruptly that the chair scraped backward.
“She is six years old!””
“Then she shouldn't be dragged into an adult dispute!””
“You were the one who brought adult problems into my daughter's life!””
“Ladies,” Judge Carter said sharply.
Both women fell silent.
The judge looked at Lily.
“Sweetheart, did your mother tell you what to say today?””
Lily shook her head.
“No.””
“Did anyone promise you a present if you came here?””
“No.””
“Did anyone threaten to punish you if you didn't come?””
Lily hesitated.
Her eyes moved toward Daniel.
Then toward Vanessa.
And back to the judge.
“No,” she whispered.
Daniel let out a breath.
Vanessa began to relax.
Then Lily added, “But Vanessa told Daddy he had to make me forget.””
The silence was immediate.
Daniel's attorney stopped writing.
Judge Carter's pen hovered above the paper.
Camilla felt Lily press closer against her side.
“What do you mean, sweetheart?”” Camilla asked softly.
Lily twisted one of the rabbit's ears around her finger.
“I heard her in the kitchen.””
Vanessa sprang to her feet.
“This is ridiculous!””
“Sit down!”” Judge Carter commanded.
Vanessa remained standing, her chest rising and falling.
“She has no idea what she's saying!””
“Then you should have no difficulty allowing her to finish.””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Closed it.
And finally sat.
Judge Carter turned back to Lily.
“Where were you when you heard Ms. Reed say that?””
“In the pantry.””
Camilla frowned.
“The pantry at home?””
Lily nodded.
“I was looking for my crayons. Daddy said I had to stay quiet because he had a surprise for Vanessa.””
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
The gesture was small, but Camilla noticed it.
So did the judge.
“What happened next?”” Judge Carter asked.
Lily looked at the rabbit in her lap.
“I heard Daddy say Mommy was going to lose the house. Then Vanessa said—”
She stopped.
Judge Carter waited.
“Go on, Lily.””
The little girl raised her eyes.
“Vanessa said the baby wouldn't matter anymore.””
Camilla's hand flew to her stomach.
Daniel's face went rigid.
Vanessa stared at Lily as if the child had just shattered something precious.
“That is a lie,” Vanessa said.
But her voice lacked the confidence it had carried all morning.
Lily began to cry silently.
Camilla pulled her close, pressing a kiss to her braided hair.
“It's okay, baby. You don't have to rush.””
Judge Carter closed the folder halfway.
“Lily, I understand this is difficult. I need you to tell me one thing. When you heard those words, did you see your father and Ms. Reed?””
Lily nodded.
“Yes.””
“Did they see you?””
Lily shook her head.
“No. But then Vanessa looked at me.””
Vanessa's lips parted.
Lily clutched the rabbit against her chest.
“She came to the pantry door.””
Camilla felt cold spread through her arms.
“What did she do, sweetheart?””
Lily looked at Vanessa.
For the first time since entering the courtroom, the little girl seemed less frightened than angry.
“She told me if I ever told Mommy what I saw, she would make sure Daddy never came home again.””
Daniel slammed his palm against the table.
“That's enough!””
The gavel struck.
“Mr. Caldwell, one more outburst and I will have you removed.””
Daniel stared at the judge, breathing heavily.
Lily pressed her face into Camilla's shoulder.
Vanessa's hands trembled in her lap.
Judge Carter watched her for several seconds, then slowly turned a page in the separate file.
“Ms. Reed,” she said, “you appear to know considerably more about this child's presence than you initially suggested.””
Vanessa forced a laugh.
“I don't know what you're talking about.””
“Then perhaps you can explain why your name appears on the document I received this morning.””
Vanessa stopped laughing.
Daniel turned sharply toward the bench.
“What document?””
Judge Carter looked down at the paper.
Then she raised her eyes.
May you like
“A document that suggests this little girl may not be the only person who has been told to keep quiet.””
And when the judge read the name written beneath Vanessa's signature, Daniel's attorney slowly stood up.
