Chapter 8: The Birth Certificate That Should Never Have Existed

Camilla didn't sleep.

At six in the morning, she sat at the kitchen table with a mug of untouched tea and the photograph displayed on her laptop.

The man beside her mother had dark eyes, a narrow nose, and a small scar near his chin.

Something about him seemed familiar.

She enlarged the image until the pixels blurred.

Nothing changed.

At 7:14 a.m., her attorney called.

“Mrs. Caldwell, Michael Grant has provided an initial statement and offered to turn over his retained files. I recommend that you come to the office as soon as you can.””

“Did he say anything about my mother?””

“He mentioned a birth certificate. He says Daniel may have obtained a copy from an old family file.””

Camilla's hands went cold.

“Whose birth certificate?””

“He couldn't confirm. He says the document was referenced in correspondence concerning the trust.””

Camilla closed her eyes.

“I'm on my way.””

She arranged for a family friend to stay with Lily and drove to her attorney's office.

Michael was already there when she arrived.

He looked exhausted. His tie was crooked, and the skin beneath his eyes was dark with sleeplessness.

A thick folder lay on the table before him.

Camilla didn't sit.

“Tell me what you know.””

Michael looked at her attorney.

“Can we proceed with my counsel present?””

His own lawyer, a woman named Patricia Wells, nodded.

“Mr. Grant has agreed to provide information and preserve the relevant records. We will need to review any potential privilege issues before documents are released.””

Camilla's attorney gestured toward a chair.

“Please sit, Mrs. Caldwell. We'll proceed carefully.””

Camilla sat.

Michael opened the folder.

“The first document is a copy of the original trust agreement. It was created before Daniel married you. The intended beneficiary was a minor child identified as the daughter of Daniel Caldwell and Rebecca Morgan.””

He placed a second page beside it.

“The second document is a transfer authorization. It purports to show that the beneficiary's guardian consented to the funds being moved into a different account.””

Camilla looked at the signature.

It resembled her mother's.

But the date was impossible.

Her mother had been dead for years.

“Who provided this?””

“Daniel.””

“Did you know the signature was false?””

Michael shook his head.

“Not when I prepared the transfer. I discovered the date discrepancy later, when I compared the document with the account's original opening records.””

“Why didn't you report it?””

Michael looked down.

“I was afraid my own work would be examined. I thought I could persuade Daniel to correct the records quietly.””

Camilla stared at him.

“You helped him move money belonging to a child, then hoped he would fix it?””

“Yes.””

“Did he?””

“No.””

Michael opened another envelope.

“This is the birth certificate I mentioned.””

He slid it across the table.

Camilla looked down.

The certificate identified Rebecca Morgan as the mother.

The child's first name was obscured by a black mark on the copy, but the surname was clearly visible.

*Bennett.*

Camilla stopped breathing.

Her attorney leaned forward.

“Mr. Grant, where did this document come from?””

“Daniel's private files. He asked me to obtain a certified copy several years ago. He said it was needed to resolve a family inheritance matter.””

Camilla touched the edge of the paper.

“Why does the child have my father's surname?””

Michael hesitated.

“I don't know.””

“Did you ever ask?””

“Yes. Daniel said Thomas Bennett had agreed to acknowledge the child for financial reasons.””

Camilla shook her head.

“My father wasn't that kind of man.””

Michael didn't argue.

Her attorney carefully examined the certificate.

“We'll need to verify this with the issuing authority. A photocopy isn't enough to establish the document's authenticity or the circumstances of its creation.””

Camilla nodded, but her mind was already racing.

Her father had been involved in Rebecca's life before Camilla married Daniel.

He had provided money for the baby.

He had kept documents in a safe.

And now there was a birth certificate carrying his surname.

“What if my father was the child's biological father?”” Camilla whispered.

Michael looked startled.

“Mrs. Caldwell, I have no evidence of that.””

“Neither do I.””

Her attorney placed a hand on the table.

“We shouldn't jump to conclusions. The surname could have been used for legal or administrative reasons. We need independent verification.””

Camilla took a slow breath.

She knew he was right.

But the photograph remained burned into her mind.

Her mother beside an unknown man.

Her father's final letter.

Daniel's warning.

The impossible birth certificate.

She looked at Michael.

“Is there anything else?””

He hesitated.

Then he removed a folded sheet from the folder.

“This was attached to the original trust file.””

The paper contained a short handwritten note.

If anything happens to me, make sure Camilla never learns the truth about the baby.

Below the sentence was a signature.

Thomas Bennett.

Camilla's eyes filled.

Her father had known something.

But had he been protecting her from Daniel's actions, or hiding something of his own?

Before she could ask, Michael's phone vibrated.

He looked at the screen and went pale.

Patricia noticed.

“Who is it?””

“My mother.””

He answered.

“Mom?””

Evelyn's voice came through the speaker, frantic and breathless.

“Michael, they're here.””

“Who's there?””

“Two men. They said they're from Daniel's office. They're asking about the safe.””

Michael stood.

“Don't open the door.””

“I haven't. But they say they have authorization to remove the records.””

“Do not give them anything. Call the police if they try to force entry.””

Evelyn began crying.

“One of them said Daniel knows what I did.””

Michael closed his eyes.

“Mom, listen to me. You're not alone. Patricia is here, and we'll get help.””

He ended the call and turned to his lawyer.

“I need to go to her.””

Patricia shook her head.

“Not without arranging proper assistance. We should contact local authorities and make sure she is safe.””

Camilla's attorney was already making a call.

Within minutes, arrangements were underway for Evelyn to meet with counsel and provide her statement. The men at her home were asked to identify themselves and leave any documents with the appropriate authorities rather than remove anything.

No one knew whether they had intended to intimidate Evelyn or simply retrieve records they believed belonged to Daniel.

But the incident made one thing clear.

Someone was afraid of what the documents would reveal.

Later that afternoon, Rebecca arrived at the office with a small digital recorder.

“This is the message Thomas left,” she said.

Camilla stared at it.

“Have you listened to the entire recording?””

“Yes. Several times.””

“Then why didn't you tell me everything before?””

Rebecca looked ashamed.

“Because I was afraid of what it might mean. I thought the truth about Daniel's daughter was already terrible enough. I didn't want to make accusations about your family without proof.””

Camilla nodded slowly.

“I understand.””

Rebecca placed the recorder on the table.

Her attorney arranged for the recording to be copied and preserved. Then they listened together.

Thomas's voice emerged through the small speaker, weaker than Camilla remembered.

“Rebecca, if you receive this, I need you to know that I tried to stop Daniel. I should have told Camilla earlier, but I thought I could repair the damage without destroying her marriage.””

There was a long pause.

“I was wrong.””

The recording crackled.

“Daniel came to me with a document that claimed the trust had been approved by the child's legal guardian. I knew the signature wasn't right. I also knew the money had already been moved.””

Another pause.

“I confronted him. He told me the child would be provided for. He said there was no reason to tell Camilla because it would only reopen old wounds.””

Camilla covered her mouth.

Thomas continued.

“I told him that if he used my name again, I would report the transfer. He said I should remember what happened to my wife.””

The recording ended with a faint rustle.

Everyone at the table sat motionless.

Camilla's mother had died fourteen years earlier.

Her father had never mentioned that Daniel knew her.

And now Thomas's voice suggested that Daniel had used the memory of her mother to intimidate him.

Camilla looked at Rebecca.

“What did he mean by what happened to his wife?””

Rebecca shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Michael leaned forward.

“There may be another file. Daniel kept an archive of documents relating to the trust, including correspondence that wasn't part of the official accounting.””

“Where?”” Camilla asked.

“I don't know the current location. But he once told me he kept a backup at a private storage facility outside the city.””

Her attorney immediately cautioned against anyone searching the facility without legal authority.

They agreed to pursue the information through formal requests.

Then Rebecca pulled out another sheet.

“I also found something in the hospital records. The birth certificate lists Thomas Bennett as the child's father, but the hospital's original intake form has a different name written in the margin.””

Camilla leaned forward.

“What name?””

Rebecca slid the paper across the table.

The handwriting was faint, but the letters were legible.

*Daniel Caldwell.*

Camilla stared at the words.

Her attorney examined the form.

“This may be an intake notation rather than a formal determination of paternity. We'll need the hospital's records and a proper review.””

Rebecca nodded.

“I know. But there's something else.””

She reached into her bag and removed a second photograph.

It showed Daniel standing outside the hospital on the day Rebecca's daughter was born.

Beside him was Thomas Bennett.

And behind them, partially obscured by the open passenger door of a car, stood Camilla's mother.

Camilla felt her stomach turn.

Her mother had supposedly died years before she met Daniel.

But the photograph's date was clear.

It had been taken on the day Rebecca's daughter was born.

Camilla looked at the photograph, then at Rebecca.

“Is this real?””

Rebecca nodded.

“It came from Thomas's files. Evelyn says she remembers seeing it before.””

Camilla's attorney placed the photograph in a protective sleeve.

“We'll have the date and provenance examined. We cannot draw conclusions from it alone.””

Camilla barely heard him.

She was staring at her mother's face.

Her mother had been there.

At the hospital.

On the day Daniel's first daughter was born.

And if the birth certificate and photograph were authentic, then the story Camilla had been told about her family's past was missing a chapter that someone had deliberately removed.

Her phone vibrated.

A message from Vanessa appeared.

*Daniel isn't the only person who lied to you. Ask your father why he let your mother disappear.*

Camilla looked at the screen.

Before she could respond, another message arrived.

*And ask why the hospital record lists YOU as the emergency contact for a baby born before you ever met Daniel.*

Camilla's breath caught.

That was impossible.

She had been a teenager when Rebecca's daughter was born.

She had never met Rebecca.

She had never known Daniel.

Yet Vanessa was claiming that her name appeared in the hospital records.

Camilla's attorney took the phone and read the messages.

“We need to obtain the original record and verify this independently.””

Camilla nodded.

Then she looked at Rebecca.

“Do you remember who took you to the hospital?””

Rebecca's eyes filled.

“Thomas Bennett.””

“And who was with him?””

Rebecca stared at the photograph.

“My mother.””

Camilla felt the room tilt.

“Your mother?””

Rebecca nodded slowly.

“She told me she was helping Thomas because he had promised to protect my daughter. I thought she was simply being kind.””

Camilla looked down at the photograph again.

The woman standing beside Thomas was unmistakable.

It was her mother.

And the realization that followed was more terrifying than any of Daniel's lies.

If Camilla's mother had been present at the birth, and if the hospital had listed Camilla as an emergency contact, then someone had known about this child long before Daniel ever entered Camilla's life.

Someone had known enough to connect their families.

And someone had made sure Camilla never discovered the connection.

Her attorney reached for the documents.

“We need the original hospital file. That's our next step.””

Rebecca nodded.

“I can help obtain it.””

Camilla stared at the photograph one final time.

Her mother had stood outside that hospital room.

Her father had carried the money.

Daniel had signed the transfer documents.

And Vanessa had just revealed that the hospital's records might contain Camilla's name.

The question was no longer whether Daniel had hidden a child.

May you like

It was whether the child had been hidden from Camilla because of who she was.

Or because of who she might turn out to be.
