Chapter 4: The Woman Who Knew My Wife's Secret
“Vanessa, we need to leave. Now.””
The woman's voice echoed through the hallway.
I turned toward the staircase, still holding Lily in my arms.
The stranger stood behind Ethan. She was in her early forties, wearing a black blazer and carrying a large leather handbag. Her expression was tense, and her eyes kept moving between Vanessa and the envelope in my son's hands.
Ethan clutched the envelope against his chest.
“Dad,” he said, “she told me not to give this to Vanessa.””
I stared at the woman.
“Who are you?””
She hesitated.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Mark, this is Claire. She's a family adviser.””
I looked at the stranger.
“Are you the Claire from that email?””
Claire didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she looked at Vanessa.
“Why didn't you tell him?””
Vanessa's face tightened.
“Not here.””
I almost laughed.
“Not here? My daughter was denied food in her own home, my son has been keeping secrets for months, and now a stranger is standing in my hallway telling my wife to run. I think we're well past the point of having a private conversation.””
Claire lowered her handbag.
“Mr. Carter, I think you need to see what's inside that envelope.””
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“Absolutely not.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because those documents are confidential.””
“Confidential to whom?””
She didn't answer.
Ethan slowly descended the stairs.
When he reached me, he held out the envelope.
“I found it in the bottom drawer of her desk,” he explained.
“I wasn't looking for it. I was looking for Lily's birthday card.””
I took it.
The envelope was thick, with several sheets of paper inside.
The first document appeared to be a bank statement.
I recognized the account number.
It belonged to the savings account Rachel and I had opened for our children years earlier.
Every month, we had deposited money into it.
It was meant for their education.
I turned the page.
There were withdrawals.
One thousand dollars.
Two thousand five hundred.
Four thousand.
I looked at the dates.
The transactions had been happening for almost eight months.
“Vanessa.””
She crossed her arms.
“What?””
“Why are you withdrawing money from my children's savings account?””
Her mouth opened, then closed.
Claire finally spoke.
“She told me the withdrawals were authorized by you.””
I looked at her.
“They weren't.””
Claire's expression changed.
“Then she lied to me too.””
Vanessa snapped.
“Claire, shut up!””
The woman stepped backward.
“I've covered for you long enough.””
I placed the bank statements on the kitchen island.
“Where did the money go?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You're misunderstanding the documents.””
I pointed to the transactions.
“Explain them.””
“I moved some money temporarily.””
“Where?””
“Into another account.””
“Whose account?””
She stared at me.
Then she said something I would never forget.
“Mine.””
I felt Lily's arms tighten around my neck.
I lowered my voice.
“You took money from my children's education fund and put it into your personal account?””
“I was entitled to some financial security.””
“You were entitled to what we agreed on. Not their savings.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Everything in this house has always been about Rachel's children. Their photographs. Their birthdays.
Their school expenses. Their little traditions. What about me?””
I looked at her in disbelief.
“You married a man with children.””
“And I thought I would become part of the family!””
“You did become part of the family. But you don't get to steal from them because you feel neglected.””
Vanessa pointed toward Lily.
“She's the reason everything is falling apart!””
Lily buried her face against my shoulder.
That was enough.
I turned toward my mother.
“Take the children into the living room.””
Patricia nodded.
“Come on, sweetheart.””
Lily didn't want to release me.
“Daddy?””
“I'm coming in a minute.””
“Promise?””
I kissed her forehead.
“Promise.””
Ethan followed Grandma, but before he left, he looked at me.
“Don't let her take the envelope.””
“I won't.””
When they were gone, I turned toward Claire.
“Tell me everything.””
Claire looked uncomfortable.
Vanessa shook her head.
“Don't you dare.””
Claire ignored her.
“Vanessa contacted me last year. She said she was having difficulties managing the household after becoming a stepmother. She wanted advice about financial planning and family arrangements.””
“What kind of arrangements?””
“At first, she asked about creating separate savings accounts and changing certain household responsibilities.””
I frowned.
“And then?””
Claire looked at the paperwork.
“Then she began asking questions about guardianship.””
I felt my blood run cold.
“Guardianship of my children?””
“Yes.””
Vanessa interrupted.
“She was helping me understand my legal options!””
Claire continued.
“She told me that you were considering sending Lily to live with relatives.””
I stared at my wife.
“What?””
Vanessa looked away.
Claire pulled another document from her handbag.
“She asked me to help prepare a proposal for temporary residential placement. She said Lily had behavioral problems and that you were becoming overwhelmed.””
I couldn't speak.
Temporary residential placement.
That was how she had described getting rid of an eight-year-old girl.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Did you tell someone I wanted my daughter sent away?””
She shook her head.
“Mark, listen—”
“Did you?””
“I was trying to find a solution!””
“To what? Her existence?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“You don't understand how difficult it has been.””
I took a step toward the island.
“I understand that you had a child hiding crackers under her bed because she was afraid of going hungry.””
Vanessa's expression hardened.
“She exaggerates everything.””
Claire looked at her.
“Vanessa, stop.””
My wife turned sharply.
“You don't get to judge me!””
Claire reached into her handbag and removed a small recording device.
“I think you should hear something.””
Vanessa froze.
“What is that?””
“A recording from our last meeting.””
“Turn it off.””
Claire placed the device on the counter.
“I recorded it because you asked me to keep detailed notes of our discussions.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Claire, I swear—”
I raised my hand.
“Let her play it.””
Claire pressed a button.
A few seconds of static filled the kitchen.
Then Vanessa's voice emerged.
“Once Mark signs the updated financial documents, I can move the remaining money without him questioning every transaction.””
A second voice, apparently Claire's, asked:
“And what happens to Lily?””
Vanessa answered:
“If she's not here, everything becomes simpler. Ethan is old enough to be reasonable. Lily is the problem.””
The recording stopped.
I felt as though someone had punched me in the chest.
Vanessa stood perfectly still.
I looked at her.
“You said that?””
She shook her head.
“It's out of context.””
“What context could possibly make that acceptable?””
She wiped her cheeks.
“I was frustrated.””
“You were planning to remove my daughter from her own family.””
“I never said I wanted to hurt her!””
“You don't have to hit a child to hurt her.””
For a moment, Vanessa looked almost ashamed.
Then she did something unexpected.
She started crying.
Not the quiet kind.
She covered her face and sobbed.
“Mark, please. I love you.””
I didn't move.
“I gave up so much to be here.””
“You didn't give up your right to be kind.””
“I made mistakes.””
“You made decisions. Repeatedly.””
She reached for my hand.
“Please don't destroy our marriage over this.””
I stepped away.
“This isn't about our marriage anymore.””
Her tears stopped almost immediately.
She looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.
“You really think you can manage without me?””
I stared at her.
“Yes.””
She laughed.
“Then you have no idea what's coming.””
Claire suddenly looked at her watch.
“Vanessa, we need to go.””
I turned toward her.
“Why?””
Claire hesitated.
Then she reached into her handbag and removed another sheet of paper.
“This was delivered to Vanessa yesterday.””
It was a printed appointment confirmation.
The date was the following morning.
The location was a private financial institution.
The appointment description read:
*FINAL SIGNATURES — BENEFICIARY AND ACCOUNT AUTHORIZATION.*
My name was listed as the account holder.
Vanessa's name appeared beneath it.
I looked up.
“What signatures?””
Claire lowered her voice.
“She said you had agreed to transfer control of the children's savings accounts.””
I stared at Vanessa.
She didn't deny it.
Instead, she reached for her handbag.
I moved the documents out of her reach.
“Don't.””
She stopped.
Then her phone rang.
She glanced at the screen.
Something changed in her expression.
She answered.
“Hello?””
A man's voice came through loudly enough for me to hear.
“Did you get the documents? We need the transfer completed before tomorrow.””
Vanessa looked at me.
The caller continued.
“And don't forget what we discussed about the house.””
She quickly ended the call.
I stood motionless.
“The house?””
Vanessa grabbed her handbag.
“I'm leaving.””
I stepped aside.
But before she reached the door, Claire spoke again.
“Vanessa, you need to tell him about the house.””
My wife turned.
“Claire, I will ruin you.””
Claire's face remained steady.
“You already tried.””
Then she looked at me.
“Mr. Carter, there is another property document in that envelope. You should read it before you let her leave.””
I opened the envelope again.
At the bottom was a folded legal document.
And when I saw the address printed across the top, I recognized it immediately.
It was the address of our family home.
The house Rachel and I had bought together.
May you like
The house where our children had grown up.
And someone had already started the process of transferring ownership.
